i got my vox a month ago and i love the design. probably the only smartphone design out there that looks as good as it does. But the problem i'm having with it is the performance level...i've had it lock up on me, sometimes it takes forever to load a simple task such as my text messages. I love the phone design to death, is there a phone that keeps this slick design but performs just as well? I know htc released a s730, but really? lol come on, its bigger, contains the same amount of ram, faster processor but still...
Or is it time i move to a pocket pc? do they perform better than smartphones? Or am i looking at this entirely from the wrong view, is it windows mobile thats causing this? is there away i could change the OS installed, maybe like the OS pocketpc's run? I'm not new to all this, but I would like some input and what everyones feeling, or if anyone is feeling the way I am. thanks again guys, looking forward to your responses
p.s. if you have any recommendations on devices i should look at, please let me know cause I might start looking for something new
One solution is to overclock your vox.
For me is very frustrating, slow opening of new SMS, too!
I don't know any other way to speed up your device.

ya i have it overclocked to 252 mhz, there is a improvement but why does it take so long to send a sms? not to mention the amount of steps that need to be taken to do so, open messaging, text messages, new, have to open contact list (which takes a while) then select a contact, select their mobile number, hit enter, then finally start typing.
I was looking at the iphone, and some reviews off youtube, the phone seems really responsive and fast, anyone with any suggestions? wondering if that might be a good step up?
You can start typing the name you want to write to on homescreen so the contact shows up. Then with left/right arrows select SMS, when you open it it goes directly to sending a SMS to this contact, same applies to the phone book and it will stay that way.

wow that is alot faster! didnt know that, makes texting a whole lot faster. guess i've been doing it the long way, hence the bitter taste its left. question, is windows mobile operating system more efficient than what the pocketpcs have installed?
For me that's really the most interesting thing in the iPhone, the fact that its interface is so fluid, everything seem to load fast . It seems really less frustrating to use. The only problem for me is that it is not as easy to tweak it as is windows mobile. Too bad windows mobile 7 still is a long time ahead..
But at least Windows Mobile 6.1 is due for the first quarter 08, let's hope that it will bring some improvements!
The thing about the MacOS X and the iPhone is that it's only designed for a couple devices, so it's very customized for these. Windows and Windows Mobile is made for thousands of different machines, so problems are just inevitable.
Speed improvements would be great indeed But my hopes are not very high

i think we've peaked in terms of performance and speed with the vox, the iphone GUI is amazing not to mention how flawlessy it flows from one application to another. Only thing I can give iphone a hard time for is it doenst seem homebrew friendly.
So that being said, would you guys recommend/suggest a vox ->iphone upgrade? or just stick with the vox?
Sick with the Vox and try the lates official HTC ROM, it's available on the XDA-developers ftp site. I fashed my Vox to it yesterday and it is alot faster than the original Vox ROM and is slightly smaller aswell leaving more RAM free to install apps like facade and PhoneAlarm.

I also didn't like how long it took to open messaging and start a new text message. Its the main reason I overclocked my s710. Here's a couple of other things that I came across while trying to improve messaging speed. Working in combination, they made a huge difference for me:
1. overclocked to 252mhz
2. place a shortcut in your \windows\startup folder with the following commands:
58#"\Program Files\load.exe" -hide "\Windows\tmail.exe"
81#"\Program Files\load.exe" -hide "\Windows\tmail.exe" -service "SMS" -to ""-body""
Opens the messaging app in the background on startup. Opens a new blank text message on startup. Requires load.exe to be able to open in the background. Since it is already open in the background, you can access messaging instantly. Whatever method you choose to open a new text message will also be faster since their is already a blank open text message in the background.
3. I like the method mentioned above of typing the contact then selecting Send Text Message. Another method that is just as fast is to create a shortcut to your blank open text message and place it in your Program Files folder (or wherever, I have mine as a shortcut in my facade launcher bar). The shortcut contains the same new text message command as above (just without using load.exe to hide it in the background):
49#"\Windows\tmail.exe" -service "SMS" -to ""-body""
Opening this brings you directly to your blank text message, just select your contact and start typing.
Hope this helps!
wow! god thats amazing, loads instantly :|! and its even more amazing that your a junior member, did you read this somewhere? if not, cudos to you, thanks a lot loving that small tweak ALOT! appreciate it. hopefully more people read this.
Wish there was a program that ran more tweaks to help smartphones performance
After figuring out tmail.exe was the messaging app, I kinda just played around with that and load.exe (found in "how to pimp your s710" thread on Modaco.com) to see what would happen. After that I came accross that command to open a new blank text message on some random tweaks page. Had to try it out with load.exe too. Glad I did . Simple stuff can make a big difference. My last phone was a simple Nokia 6133 flip, and I could access text messaging or a new text message within a second of opening the phone...not really that important, but I wanted that streamlined access to messaging with the s710. I think these little tweaks make it pretty close.
i've created the shortcut, but for some reason it doens't load....my question is when i tried to run tmail manually from file explorer it loads up the messaging center, and not straight into text messages (option 1 of the text messaging center). now i was curious if theres a way we can get text messaging loaded directly
now I get what you were saying in your PM, you want to go directly to the text messaging section of tmail.exe. Try this:
35#"\Windows\tmail.exe" -service "SMS"
Put this in a shortcut. When you open it, it should take you to your text messages.

I want to organise my contacts so that the names come up based on alphabetical order of their first name, not their surname.
ie if I have a mate called Ben Smith, I want this to be shown under B for Ben and not S for Smith.
Is this possible? At the moment I am inputing contact names as Smith Ben and then it appears under the contacts as Ben, Smith . . . any ideas?
Thanks
Photo Contacts does provide this option. It lets your sort on different parameters.
http://www.pocketx.net/smartphone/photocontacts.html
You can change the way contacts are displayed in Outlook on your desktop and then sync then to your device. You can also install the attached cabs, they will give you an option in the pop-up menu when you tap and hold a contact on how to show the contacts.
OK, cool. Thanks for the help.
Anyone know how to make the Contacts remember my selected filter?
My old phone had 25 contacts that I actually call with any regularity. My Outlook contacts has a thousand or something. I don't want to scroll through all those so I created a "Phone" category hoping to have the big list filtered. But, Contacts won't remember the filter and I don't want to re-select it every time.
Any thoughts?
Raj Pillai solved the "First Name, Last Name" problem by writing a free Outlook plug-in. I've used it with no problems.
It's *very easy* and convenient.
Instructions:
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/raj/FileAs.html
The App:
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/raj/Download/FileAsSorter.zip
You double-click to install this plugin.
Then, you open your Outlook Contacts, click "File As Sorter" in the toolbar, and it will ask you how you want to sort your contacts. Click "First, Last" and voila! Now your contacts will appear the way you want on your phone.
Do what I did. I highlighted my most frequently called contacts as such:
John Smith -> [John] Smith
The [ symbol comes before A, thus the [-ized names are always listed first.
Just don't use: "John" Smith, or your pda will go crazy whenever you try to Sms/Mms him - as I discovered the very hard way.
A little off topic but there's a great bit of software for the Treo that does this called Initiate;
http://www.hobbyistsoftware.com/
I've pinged them about developing something for Win5 platform but so far no luck, maybe if more would join the chorus.
With this program you simply could input letters and it would bring up anything that matched the order. So for Bob Smith you could imput bsh or oth, you get the idea, very cool, worked great, we need it for windows.
What I did was I removed all the first names. Then under the "Last name" field, I put in the full name. That works well
Maybe I wasn't clear - the Outlook plugin I mentioned will automatically re-sort all your contacts as First, Last, so as soon as you sync, all your contacts will show up in the right order.
I wrote a small little .NET CF 2.0 app that handles this pretty well. Very lightweight and definitely gets the job done. And its free (of course, you can donate, though! ).
See my post over here at MoDaCo about it.
Thanks!
Although I normally use a little plug-in that saves as First, Last....this is quite a cool app!!
Although it required the (BIG) 5 MB .Net on my Main Memory (that is the only thing that sucks, but hey....I was sure that one time, I had to install .Net, so I just gotta live with that, but 30MB free Main Memory is still okay ), it's good enough to have it staying installed on my Wizard.
Thanks bro!

Hopefully in the next few weeks I will develop integration into the contacts list as well as a smaller footprint file (I know C++ extremely well, but I didn't want to have to deal with all the code and I just started learning a bit with C#) so it loads quicker and requires less memory. I'll keep you posted on its progress. Thanks for the props though![/i]
!Sounds real good zero_devide_1!
I'll be lookin' around for you and your updated program
HI ,u can use this cab file to change the way contacts look also u can add conpany name ...its preety cool bein usin it from quite some time .

Hi everyone, I installed Manila 2D with update 20 on my AT&T Tilt (HTC 8925). I've noticed some weird things and I was wondering if these are items that the developers know about or if there are any fixes for them:
1) I have Windows Mobile 6.1 and my backlight settings keep reverting back to turn off the backlight on the screen after 10 seconds. I installed the backlight patch release by Microsofy or HTC (I forget who) and it fixed the problem. But since I installed Manila 2D it broke again. I tried re-running the backlight fix but it still won't help.
2) On my home screen, even if I clear my call history, I still get the "! Call History" indicator showing up. It just doesn't go away.
3) On the mail screen, I love how I can preview part of the message within the letter coming out of the envelope. However, I have 3 mail boxes/systems setup. First I have my device wirelessly receiving emails from my corporate Exchange Server. For all those emails, I do see the preview. But I also have a second email "mailbox" which gets my emails from my hotmail account. Those won't show me a preview, it simply says "Click to view message". I also get have the same problem with all emails from my 3rd mailbox, which retreives emails every 5 minutes from my Comcast account. Any ideas why I can only preview emails from my first Email Account?
4) I like the new Audio Manager and it's much nicer than the Windows Mobile one. BUT, I can only set my volume to 6 diferent settings! (using the main volume control). In the Windows Media version I can hit the up key on the dpad and set the volume from 0-100% with increments of 5% I think. But with the Manila 2D/HTC Audio Manager, the volume on some songs are too loud or too soft. I can't seem to find a good setting. Has anyone else noticed this lack of ability to set a good volume setting?
These are the main issues which annoy me. Aside from these I love the look and feel of Manila 2D - TouchFlo version. But because of issue 1 and 4 (backlight problem and music volume problem) I think I'll need to go back to the standard WM 6.1 and remove my Manila 2D. Has anyone experienced my issues above or have any info on fixes or if these are being looked at for next release?
Thanks a bunch!!!
i have to go pull my tilt back out, but let me see if i can recreate the problem you ask for help on and i will get back to you hopefully with an answer.
M2D answers:
1. Not sure what phone you have, or what patch you were referring to. I guess it is individually related to ROM or phone. Can you tell me what ROM/Phone it is?
2. The text 'Call History' is the default when you have no missed calls. When you do, it will have more info. If you hate it, and willing to lose this info, use M2DC and make any line you don't like disappear.
3. Most likely the messages on your Hotmail are HTML based, not text, or contains images. Try sending yourself a simple text message and see if it shows. if it doesn't , then your email account simply sends out a format M2D considers an image the viewer can not show. I don't have a Hotmail acct, but i would guess there is a way to set it up to simple text. Then it will work.
4. There are tools on this forum, allowing you to choose what player you want to use. I don't use them, but can recall at least one config tool to M2D that will allow you to change it to your taste.
I personally like M2D a lot. I think it is one of the best home plugins there are there, and I have tried the all. SPB, WAD , Home screen, HTC home, etc. none were so cool as M2D, but it is in the eye of the beholder, after all..

another Manila 2D Question
thanks to gooniez28 for starting this thread, i have question before installing Manila 2D. i've seen so many Manila 2D madness here and i'd like to try it on my nike.
according to several informations on internet, i found that we have to flash our rom before installing the theme and this Manila needs more memory used in our device.
i'm so noob for flashing the rom and i'm affraid of its risk , this is my 1st windows mobile phone (and the only one that i have ), so can i instal it without flashing the rom? e.g. i have 68 MB free memory
thanks in advice
regards,
den
I never flashed my ROM. I actually didn't realize you were supposed to do that. (nor do I know how) I just copied the Manila 2D files to my TILT (HTC 8925) and ran them to install Manila 2D. You know, that may be the reason that every time I turn on my phone, it asks me to click in the middle of the screen to load TouchFlo Manila 2D. I wonder if I wouldn't have to do this if I flash my ROM...
Right now as far as i understand manilla only supports one email account at a time
On the fuze how can I program the phone so it will automatically change certain words as I program. For example typing an "i" all by itself automatically becomes an "I". or march become March or tuesday becomes Tuesday.
There is a "find and replace" option for an entire document, but that is not what I am looking for. I am looking for Auto Correct where you type in Replace:______ With __________ and it applies to all things typed on the phone (emails, notes, word docs, etc)
Please advise. Thank you everyone!
http://www.ppcmobility.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63
This will tell you how to do it but it's not as great as it should be...
I think this would be the solution and is the exact feature I was asking about - http://mobile-sg.com/software/?p=WordCorrector&platform=ppc
But I am still trying to make it work. It installed with no problems and shows in the programs folder and I can open it up and add new items, but I can not figure out how to activate it to work with text, emails, Word, etc.
would love some help if possible.
that app just changes the autocorrect file...it's the same thing you can do manually but it is not the T9's autocorrect file (it's the standard SIP's file)
that is what I found out also. looks like i am back to having no option by the T9. This is another thing that I am surprised the htc fuze/touch pro phones do not have better installed systems/features. You should be able to make the choice to turn off T9 and use the normal Auto Correct tool like you would see in normal work, or most email programs. oh well.
I just got my hands on the new Shadow 2009 ROM and I found a nice little app that will enable or disable the threaded messaging of you 6.1 ROM!
Copy it anywhere on the phone and run it. Then choose "Classic" or "Threaded" and click done and reboot!
Done
perfect!
it works great
you don't even have to restart. just kill the outlook/text messages process (tmail.exe) and apply the tool.
(little thing: when switching from classic to threaded, outlook takes a lot of time to load and organize the threads)
(edit: and after that it takes ages to open a thread, so maybe restarting the vox is best anyway )
really! does it ask for reboot or do u need to kill process? why taking so much pain man!
Its just a matter of going in registry and change DWORD key "SMSAvailable" from "1" to "0". Thats it, no reboot.
to revert, change 0 to 1, again no reboot. it takes in effect immidiately.
yes that's true, but the reorganizing of the threads then also happens, and that is quite a pain with 1400 messages......
i prefer being non-threaded: much faster and the delete-option of deliverynotifications of smsbubbles works correct then.

Absolutely correct, in threaded mode sometimes while composing SMS, it does not work properly and erase what you typed suddenl and u have to type again.
I never use threaded.
These are things where I searched but I can't find good fixes. Maybe my searching skills suck
1. Is there a better [and free] torrent program than wmtorrent? Mine has some bug where the torrent never starts, it's just stuck in queue forever. I have to reinstall it to get a torrent going. Sometimes more than once. Also it's really clunky.
2. I was hoping assign my back key to some other function. I found the setting for assigning keys to programs but the only key I can bind is the call button. I got hbutton and it also offers nothing except the call button. I also found the registry key where buttons are listed and same problem. How can I do this?
3. Occasionally I get compressed EXE's instead of CAB files to install something. I hate having to find a PC to unzip them and then transfer the cab. Is there a program that unzips these?
4. Sometimes programs seem to overload the phone and I can't even shut it off anymore. If I keep wmtorrent going for a couple of hours, for example, or the skyfire browser. The hang up key doesn't respond and I have to pop the battery out. Is there any trick to avoid this? Some memory management app or something?
5. Opera mobile is clean and fast and handles some flash, but chokes on e.g. flash streaming video. Also it has a setting (stupidly hidden in opera:config) to report the user agent as a desktop browser, which should give me the full version of websites, right? But the websites aren't fooled. They still send me the mobile version. Skyfire handles flash better and seems to fool websites better, but see #4. Also the keyboard is retarded, it either isn't offered where it should be or it's some custom keyboard instead of my usual (swype). So... is there a better browser that does it all correctly? Anyone got a real fix for the opera user agent thing?
6. I saw a custom rom with a task manager built into the corner. You could close the app or switch. I think it was the psyke rom. I would like something like this but without installing a totally new ROM. Right now I use hang up --> Task Manager --> then double tap the program I want to switch to. Alternately is there something where X-ing out of a program totally kills the process instead of just bringing you back to home screen?
7. I install every single program to my storage card, but still have low memory in my main memory. I got a warning recently on it. I found a big 35 meg file in google maps cache, anywhere else I should look? There an app to deal with this?
8. What's the difference between the weather and animated wallpapers? Both of them seem to animate a little. I'm not seeing any weather info on my home screen and some of these wallpapers seem unrelated to weather. What do I do to get weather going and do I really need to keep my wallpapers all separated? Also is there a format for the animated wallpapers? Are these animated gifs or what? Where should I get more?
9. How can I organize the start menu better? All I can do is long tap icons and then move to top. But what if I just want to move it up a bit but not to the very top?
10. What do some of the icons at the top mean? I have right and left pointing arrows where my wireless notification would be, does that mean I'm getting data? I've got all my processes closed but I've been seeing it for an hour. What's the tall triangle icon mean?
Also, I never got this answered but I'll throw in #11 anyway: any good tricks to preserving battery life? I wake up and by lunchtime my phone is done. That's nuts.
