[Q] Due For Phone Upgrade - Want This One - HTC One S

I'm due for a phone upgrade. Right now I got the LG Optimus-T on T-Mobile. I'm not a huge fan of the phone, and plus the replacement timing couldn't have been more perfect; the LG is falling apart. I did some research, and I'm leaning towards getting the HTC One S as a replacement. It's really lame that there is no SD card option.. I was reading that the phone comes with a certain amount of online storage space; how much?
I'm a musician and this phone supposedly excels in that department. I use the internal microphones on these phone to record guitar riffs and stuff; how is the built-in microphone? The internal mics are pretty hit or miss, so I'm hoping to hear good news about the one on this phone.
I'm not a fan of the large screen phones. This one seems to be one of the smaller, but it's still larger than my LG.
I've read that there is alot of bloat software that comes pre-loaded on the phone, and that it doesn't let you uninstall any of it. I guess the only way to get around that is to Root the phone. Since there is no SD card, it's important not to have any Apps that you don't use taking up space.
Thanks,
-Adam

Internal space is 16GB. Avaible actual space is around 14GB.
Since there is no SD card why not go for the Galaxy S3 instead?

The 4.3" screen on the One S is a bit too big for my liking; 4.8" sounds too large. I need to go to the store to check out the phone sizes in person.

4.3" - once you've got it you'll wonder what you did without it. The phone is not too big and build quality is excellent, you won't find the One S falling apart on you.
Trying your choices out in a shop is a good idea, especially how they work for you. The One S has the most responsive screen of any phone I've ever used and the unibody design makes it very strong, listen to any Samsung creak as it flexes in your hand
The fixed internal memory might be a problem for some but not for me, I had a 32Gb card in my last phone but found I hadn't used more than 4-5Gb of it. As a musician you may want more for mp3s but I'm betting you've already got a decent mp3 player for that.

Honestly it sounds like you'd be better off with the GSIII. Yeah, the screen size kinda sucks, but it's worth it. I'll admit the One S fits in the hand much more comfortably than the GSIII.
The lack of storage space kills me. 14Gb useable, 25Gb online via dropbox BUT only for a limited period, a year I think. Pretty pathetic that HTC would go as far as to cut out our primary storage option so Dropbox could monetize. Jerks.
This phone has been pushed for musicians and music lovers alike, but that has a lot to do with the Beats audio, which if you're unfamiliar with it, kinda really sucks. You said you play guitar? Beats is for people who play Macbooks. All you could be looking at is a stupidly oversampled bass tone and no improvements in sound anywhere else. I actually turn off Beats to prevent damage to my earbuds. As for the onboard mic, it's alright. A decent option for recording on the go. I haven't tried the GSIII's for comparison or anything. I've always used my iPod Touch for recording riffs and it's DRASTICALLY better than this phone, but, I sold it.
If you do decide to go with this phone, you're definitely going to want to unlock the bootloader and install a more lightweight ROM like CM10 or AOKP. It's a shame you're buying it now when that process has become more complex due to more bootloader restrictions. Another thing the GSIII has over this phone.

I agree with everything above but dropbox is for 2 years. The amount of time the average person uses a phone.

What I really love about the phone is the size and the build quality. And the consistency of that build quality, there are hardly any compromises made in this. You get solid performance, top notch sounds from both headset and speaker (yes beats is a gimmick, but it does show how much efford they made to get the best possible sound quality), a really solid build design which fits your hand perfectly, and a really awesome camera with a very intuitive ui. The sense ui is great as well, although its not everyone's flavor it really preforms well these days and adds allot of features over vanilla android (nexus phones). I don't know how well this phone can record sound though.
The GSIII is a great phone as well, but its plastic build always reminds me of Tupperware. Besides this, the sg3 suffers (still) from some software quirks which causes about 15% of the playstore apps to crash (on stock firmware).
I really love the design of this phone, everything is very well worked out and htc used all high end parts for this device. If I have to point a downside its the screen, although its contrast and colors are really great. But the resolution ain't that high, therefor some details are lost.
As for storage and bloat. Try to get a unlocked phone, most carriers pre instal some apps on top of sense which your can't remove. As for sense it self, you wont notice this so called bloat anymore in speed nor batterylife. As for the storage, i got 25gb dropbox storage for 2 years (this is my estimation for my phone untill i replace it aswell). You get 10gb internal storage, you wont get more on aosp roms as you cant repartition this internal storage.

I don't think that this One S phone is the right one for me. Beats audio sounds terrible and not having a SD card sound even more terrible. Someone recommended I wait a couple weeks for the Nexus 4 to come out; I haven't done any research on it yet. I'm going to the store today so I can figure out what dimensions I can deal with (i.e. screen size).
Thanks for all the help everyone,

The Nexus 4 doesn't have a SDcard-slot either, and only 16GB of storage. If it really is a dealbreaker, than the Nexus 4 won't be the device you're looking for either. However, considering the extreme low price tag ($350) on the Nexus 4 when bought via the Play Store, you might just want to take the lack of expandable storage for granted

What's the deal with this new trend of no SD card slot? Are they phasing it out in attempt cash in on the remote storage?

That's what it seems like. They're also locking the batteries in place, preventing people from upgrading to higher mAh batteries and causing them to have to replace the entire phone if their battery goes out. I don't think they realize those are two of the things a lot of the Android fanbase hates about Apple products.

Is this the bastard child of HTC?

Not to be a little rude, but I'm beginning to think this is the only HTC phone no one cares about.
I picked one up at bestbuy today and I love the form factor, the keyboard is amazing. But.. AT&T's bloatware can't be removed and due to the extremely small internal storage it's impossible to deal with it. I'm probably gonna end up taking it back.
These reasons follow.
1. Can't be rooted unless it's S-OFF
2. Screen is small (smaller than the Veer, which i had before the status)
3. HTC sense on this thing is terrible.
4. Skype doesn't even support it's front camera
5. It doesn't seem like the developer community cares to much for the little chacha/status.
It's a nice phone but it's not something I'd keep around. It's what I'd sorta call one of HTC's best work. I've had a few HTC phones and this is the best, in terms of the loud speaker, call quality and the keyboard. but the small internal memory and no rooting just kills it.
Don't be too hasty, this phone is actually good.
Factory reset fixes mem issue. Launcher pro replaces sense for iphone like speed and smoothness. Replace browser with opera mini, gallery with quickpic and sms with handcent and you're good to go. Go to your local phone guy for s-off and have your way with this little beast.
+1 for what zebdi said.
I s-off'ed my phone for 9-10 euros, rooted it myself then removed all bloatware. All done
Yeah im actually tempted to keep it mainly because the keyboard is just amazing. wish there was a free way to root the phone though.
Yep, once you are rooted it rocks.
Tbh even after I rooted I lost a little faith but once I cleared the bloat and used link2sd with an ext parted SD card , it works like a dream. Even if screen is a little small, the phone isn't huge so its acceptable!

Titan or Focus S?

Glad ATT is getting 2 badass wp7, only issue is...which to buy? Heres my problem, Titan has great build quality as evidenced by the htc inspire, the SLCD Screen is actually pretty damn good, As far as 4.7 screen I can get used too anything so It probably would be a good thing as well, I have 4.3 now and sometimes I wish I had a bit more space, I cant really find too many complaints with.the titan tbh, great build, looks, screen, camera hopefully and 16gb is enough. Only dislike imo is 800x400 on that large screen.
Then we have the Focus S, main selling point is obviously the SAP screen, I have a galaxy s2 now and its great!, camera, screen, everything except the build quality, now its not bad per say but it is all plastic and feels very cheap and almost too light. Ive gotten used to it but Id love a better build.
So it comes out to 2 things when deciding, screen vs build, like I said SLCD is not too shabby but the contrast and blacks on SAP are unreal. 4.7 could be nice too..argh, if stupid Nokia would hurry up I wouldnt even be here as they have the best of both worlds (Amoled+build+Camera+Looks=Epic)

I guess this is a little off-topic, but what made you decide to go from Android to WP7?
Also I was wondering the same if they both were to come out, Focus S or Titan. I haven't seen any pics yet of the Focus S but I know it'll have the SA+ screen, and I have a feeling it'll look just like the Galaxy S II going off how it's described in that ATT article.
Honestly it's merely based on opinion from either company I guess. Both companies are great. One phone vs. the other won't be too different based on performance because even on my mom's Focus the OS is VERY fast, and that's with just the 1Ghz snappy it's got.
If it were up to me I'd get the cheaper of the two when it releases, unless ATT is stupid enough to make them the same price, which I doubt.

I like how wp7 is simple and too the point, everything is there and easy to get too, no messing with settings and none of that stuff, its cool that you can control everything in Android but it gets overwhelming at times and feels cluttered at times and it seems like you have to manage a bunch of things, not to mention wp7 is just buetifuel and buttery smooth through out the whole os, I just love the OS, sure they are some minor things here and there but Mago is a step in the right direction, MS obviously cares and they wont let it fail, they will put the resources into it as much as they want like they did with xbox, overall its elegant and simple and has a lot of little touches that while minute make you go "man that makes sense!"

The Focus S is or should be better in almost every way outside of screen size.
Not much of a choice IMO, unless you really really want a bigger screen, Focus all the way.
Samsung's hardware is superior to HTC, beyond the case and LCD panels Samsung tends to use NAND for storage and they almost always have better Cell Radios (Stronger Reception), Cameras, and Sound Chips as well as External Speakers in their devices.
I've owned a Focus for the past 9 months, and I am leaning toward the Titan.
On the plus side, the Focus wasan impressive piece of hardware, and the SAMOLED screen is stunning to look at. However, the concerns about the SAMOLED screen burn-in (I haven't been affected so far, but it is always there in the back of my mind), along with Samsung's horrible reputation in the firmware department (the Focus had notorious issues during the NoDo update, and many of us STILL haven't received 7392), and Samsung's total and complete lack of anything resembling a value-added feature or useful app, all combined to make the Focus a very mixed bag.
I just don't have any enthusiasm for another Samsung phone right now, and the features of the Titan are almost perfect for me (pano camera extension, attentive phone, LED notification indicator, LED flashlight, and so on).
I haven't completely decided yet, but unless Samsung REALLY ups their game with the Focus S, I'll be getting a Titan soon.

^^ What he says.
i bought a samsung focus because of the SAMOLED and the mem slot added by mistake. If all new devices are 16gb imho the original focus will keep being the best wp7 device.
btw does the titan have an aluminium case? because it's beautiful until you drop it.
I hate you all. I'm on TMOUS and won't be able to get either of those phone.

besides i don't see the point in buying a nice aluminium case and covering with a crappy rubber also the phone gets bigger, but hey it just my opinion.
I don't know how important a notification light is for you but personally its a deal breaker for me which is why I will always pick HTC over samsung

Personally, I feel just about the opposite. That HTC is better in every way except screen quality. I've never owned the original focus, but do own a Captivate which I'm posting from now. My WP7 devices are HTC surround and Dell Venue Pro. From what I've seen the camera is about the same but photos look better on the device with the AMOLED screen. For me, I also typically only notice the screen difference when the devices are side by side. The surround is the best media device I've owned. The Dolby processing doesn't just affect the speaker on the device but the sound quality to get from thr audio jack. Also HTC has the best handset exclusive apps, several that I still miss on my DVP. I'll admit the Focus if the sexier device, but the Titan is the better, IMO.

Yea the screen on my GS2 is very nice but so was the slcd on the inspire I had, the inspires build.was so mich better as well, camera is better on gs and gs2 but hopefully titans new camera is good, overall Im leaning toward titan slighty the screen is gonna be the deal breaker, if its too big for my tastes I'll go with focus S, but its its not that bad then I may just go titan. Either way we cant go wrong.

What he said, I have a Focus now and came from a Captivate, I really miss knowing I have a missed call or text without turning on the phone.
So, along those lines, does anybody know if the Focus S will have a notification light or 100% that the Titan will? How about external SD support?

No one knows what the Focus S will or won't have yet. Nothing concrete has been announced about its specs yet. The Titan has been confirmed to have a notification LED. External SD support? WP7 does not support user-expanded SD memory. No phone is going to have it.

Not true, the Focus has an external SD slot, but it's not hot swappable. It used Nand Flash for the Internal 8 GB & "RAID's" that with the SD Card you add. I've heard it has some decent performance enhancements over phones without Nand Flash, but could also be why Samsung has firmware issues on it.

The Focus SD slot (I have a Focus, and I have added additional memory to it) is not designed as a user-expandable memory slot. Technically, putting a card in the slot voids your warranty (although there is no physical "tamper-proof" mechanism to prevent it).
My statement remains true. The WP7 OS does NOT support user-expandable (which implies hot-swappable) SD memory.

The question was clearly referring to external, removable, hot-swappable SD card support. My response was to that question. WP7 does not support that feature, period.

Should I buy the HTC ONE S ?

Hi.
I need your help. I'm confused about that device because I read about his problems (For example: THE Sensitive button).
And about his poor battery life which can't survive for one full day..
And that I can get only 10GB of RAM, so I can't put much apps/movies/music/photos.
And I hope that it doesn't get too hot in heavy / easy use.
But I still like this model.
I'm wondering if I should buy this model or to buy Galaxy s2 / something else.
(I don't want big screen - 4.3 is enough for me P: )
- Do you recommend me to buy it or to buy something else?
- Please tell me everything you know about this model - the good and the bad
It's really important for me.

Battery life - User dependant. Also other factors can impact this such as signal strength, type of data used, screen brightness. Looking at the battery stats thread it seems fine, better than my HOX and that's saying something.
10GB of user space available. 4GB for system & 2GB for apps. Plenty for apps. You have 10gb available to you for music, movies, photos etc. For some this is enough for others not so much. But with the ability to sync items to cloud storage for most it shouldn't be an issue.
Heat - Can't comment, but from various reading it seems cooler than other devices.
Not got the device but comparing to let's say the SGS2 this seems to have a higher resolution screen despite having a pentile screen.
Audio - Read it has one of the cleanest outputs on a mobile device, not heard it personally but it should be fine.
CPU - The S4 is one of the best dual cores around, so much there is a shortage and pretty soon they will switch to the S3. So grab the S4 version whilst you still can. It's plenty fast and outbenches some of the quads out there.
Sense - HTC's overlay, you'll love it or hate it. I love it. Has good contact management, lovely widgets, good for social networking, and such but can be a memory hog.
Camera - HTC has done a good job on the camera front. Like my HOX I like the pictures that it takes and the burst mode is a blessing. The software is also good and easy to use.
LED - This has a notification light, albeit 2 colours only compared to some other devices but at least it has one.
To sum it up it's a good mid range device. And should serve you well. Not having the device myself I'm only giving you my thoughts from reading reviews and taking some parts of my HOX.

I'd say think about longer term, it's an older device. The One S is the newer device and I'd be thinking about Jelly Bean the next android version. One S being newer would more likely be quicker to get it than the XE. It'll have more support from HTC.
Looking at the specs of both phones:
HOS is faster,
HOS reportedly has better battery life,
HOS has better screen in regards to viewing angles and sunlight compared to the first generation SLCD, again this could be subjective,
HOS is thinner and ligther,
HOS has the better camera,
HOS has native Sense 4 support,
HOS has 1gb of RAM compared to XEs 768MB,
You'll enjoy either but if you can I'd opt for the HOS if storage space isn't that important to you.

I have both the Sensation and One S and there is really no comparison, the One S is much better. I still like my Sensation but the One S is better looking and feeling, has better battery life and a nicer screen, and is much faster.
I haven't had any of the problems that people have reported here (sensitive button, poor reception etc.). Battery life has been good for me so far, and while it does warm up when you're using it heavily it's not "hot" by any means.
The lack of SD slot is not really a problem for me, but whether you can live with it depends on your usage. I've never used more than 4GB of SD card on my Sensation, so the 10GB on board is more than enough.
The only problems I would be concerned about are:
1) Chipping on the black version. I honestly think it's overblown (like most issues with all phones, only people who have problems speak up), but if you are really worried about it get the silver one. It looks even better IMO and it won't chip as the finishing process is different.
2) Getting the 1.7GHz Snapdragon S3 version instead of the 1.5GHz S4. The S3 is the previous generation chip, used in the Sensation, and is slower (despite the higher clock speed, the architecture is different) and uses more power. I don't know if there's a way to tell what you're going to get beforehand, though. Only thing I can think of is if you see "1.7GHz" anywhere on or near it, stay away.
Read my one S review (and all the other posts by me in that thread as well, as I have updated some stuff like wifi speeds and battery life, last update was today, so the last post will be useful for you) in sig and also read my post here addressing your issues/questions:

As for the heat, only gets hot when you're charging it, but this is the same for every device, in use for games etc. mine is pretty cold to touch
There is also a video in my last post in the neowin review thread showing a thermal output test comparison between the GS 2, Razr and the S.

Speaker for the HOX is fine, not as loud as say the SGS3 but it's consistent where as the SGS3 can be distorted on higher volumes. I prefer the ringtone sounds out of the HOX than SGS3.

Speaker is great, better than the GS 2 all round.
Here is what GSMarena had to say about the audio:
The cleanest audio output we have seen
The HTC One S performance in our audio quality test came as a really pleasant surprise to us. It appears that the Beats influence hasn't been limited to a single equalizer preset this time as the smartphone delivers the cleanest output we have seen from any device so far.
When connected to an active external amplifier, the HTC One S audio is simply flawless - volume levels are a little above average and it got excellent scores on every part of our test.
What's most impressive though is the One S retains virtually the same performance when you plug in a pair of headphones. The stereo crosstalk takes the tiniest dip of any smartphone we've seen so far, while the rest of the readings are either totally unaffected or worsen by an undetectable amount. Volume levels remain the same too, so it's arguably the most impressive overall performance to date.

Very good! Call quality is great for me.
Loud (can adjust the volume) and clean.
You have dual mics, so any background noise is blocked out Obviously extreme noise like cars racing right beside you and loud music might not be completely blocked out and besides you won't be able to make the other person out anyway

So far, I see that people prefer HTS ONE S
That's nice, and now I really want it XDDDDD
I've just upgraded to this phone from the Desire S. I was thinking about getting the One X or the S3 too but I want a high end mobile phone not a mini tablet. This phone is amazing coming from a rooted desire S, its so fast and smooth I don't plan on rooting it.
My advise is to simply get this phone.

Are you asking me or someone else?
1) The battery life on this phone sucks. Expect to be getting no more than 4 hours of usage on average. The iphone 4/4s gets a solid 6 hours of usage. Thats 150% more battery life and I don't need to fiddle with the settings at all to achieve this.
2) The hardware has major design flaws. First of all the black one has that chipping problem with the paint. Well I have used my phone for less than 2 months and it looks butchered as hell. People complain about the iphone 4/4s, well I dropped a gazillion times and it still looked almost brand new when I sold it. I dropped the 1S one time! and the paint already came off. The front camera is recessed and gathers dust like crazy. It's impossible to clean it because its recessed and the dust has no where to go. Crap and dust also builds up near the top plastic cap. The speakers are also located exactly on the back of the phone. So if you put your phone on your table, you can't hear it ringing. Not only that the volume is so low. I missed tons of calls.
3) The community for this phone sucks. There is barely any activity on the fora and development for custom roms is stagnating. I mean sense is crap and there is only like 1 guy working on cm9? And correct me if I am wrong but the last version of AOKP is like from 3 weeks ago with tons of bugs. Now look at the Galaxy Nexus or the 1X fora. Or look at the SGS3 fora and that phone has not even been completely released yet. Its crazy. And this is worrying cause even sense has tons of bugs. There is for example this 3g/H switching that still hasn't been fixed as far as I know.
4) Then there is this low resolution pentile screen. Well its definitely ok and you shouldn't worry about it. But you WILL notice a huge difference if you put it next to the nexus, 1X or the iphone 4/4s and you will run in to all kinds of trouble with apps. For example while my own 720p videos looks good on this phone, youtube videos will look crap no matter how high you put the settings. There are tons of these annoying things. The screen is the reason why its not quite yet a flagship device while it could have been.
That being said I think its the best android phone on the market. Its the fastest android phone on the market. It doesn't have a cheap flimsy plastic body and it has a thin and light design. Aluminum feels really good on the hand especially when its cold. Its like 100 dollars/euro cheaper than the 1X and SGS3. I'd wait for the iphone 5 though. And if that turns out to be nothing or if the wait is too long then go ahead and purchase the 1S cause thats what I recommend out of the top3 android phones.

Once again, all of that is in YOUR opinion and from your usage only as well, plenty of people including me have had the exact opposite to you. Just because you experience problems doesn't mean that every one else will....
1. Is that on screen time your talking about? If so that is very good! (depending on usage and screen brightness) No other android phone gets anywhere near that unless the screens are set to like 0% and airplane mode enabled for a bit. Just look at my review and you will see the usage that I am getting from a single charge, now go and find me an android phone on stock ROM with a stock battery that can beat that (apart from the motorola razzr for obvious reasons). The iphone 4/4s also seem to have a problem with battery life for quite a few people, heck apple have even released a number of updates iirc to try and fix the battery drain
Plus don't forget that the iphone 4/4s doesn't have the same amount to do as an android phone.
2. The MAO issue is not a "hardware" problem, but a design fault.... Also I have had my phone since release day and still have no signs of chipping anywhere apart from inside the USB port plus HTC have addressed this now as they have got a design, which has a bevelled USB and less sharper edges. Well you were extremely lucky with your 4s then as due to the build of it and being mostly glass, the screen is almost always guaranteed to shatter when dropped......
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elKxgsrJFhw
It all depends on where abouts the ground impacts the mobile, you could be lucky or not so lucky with any device. If you want to be safe than sorry then a case is a necessary item for all mobiles, even the GS 2. Some devices are just more durable than others.
I have had no problems with dust getting under my screen, had my mobile since April, yes dust does gather in the front camera part, however, a quick blow and wipe with a pencil in a cloth sorts that problem out.
Emmmm what? The volume is amplified a wee bit when it is placed on the desk due to that reason, you can raise the volume as well you know or use a louder ring tone, you must be pretty deaf if you can't hear your mobile ringing......
3. The community isn't great, but it is starting to pick up now especially since the kernel source was posted, there are a few good ROMs from what I have read such as trickdroid and leedroid. Sense is crap in your opinion, many people including me love it and I for one won't be changing to a stock ICS ROM as I don't want to loose the features of sense, which IMO are better than the alternatives. The gallery, dialer, calendar, clock app are superb and not to mention the sense camera along with all the features, which you won't find on any other mobile or stock ICS ROM. Of course the galaxy nexus is going to have a damn good developing community, it's only the official/stock android phone that all the developers use to develop apps for and was the first phone to have a 720P display. The developing community here will never be as good as the the 1X or GS 3 community as they are the "flagship" devices and the phones that everyone will go for just for because of that "term"
Also the tegra chipset is apparently proving to be hard to work with for the developers with the 1X due to nvidia lack of support.
What are these bugs you speak off? I haven't had any problems with mine, super stable, super quick and smooth, multi-tasking is fine as I have disabled a lot of sense stuff and apps that I don't need and am using apex etc. instead.
If you look at my other post addressing issues you will see that I don't have the 3G/H bug, along with many other people.
The iphone is well known to have signal issues as well, not remember the 4 or 4s release where people were complaining about terrible signal, and apple said essentially "you're holding the phone the wrong way" and had to give out free bumper cases to solve the issue as it was a problem with the new antenna that they were using......
4. There is no problem with the screen, sure it ain't 720P and doesn't use RGB matrix, but it is perfectly good and better than most other mobiles screens apart from the ones you mentioned along with a couple of SE mobiles. The screen is nice and sharp still, the only areas I notice the pentile matrix is with white text on black backgrounds and some icons and even still I have to put my eyes right up to the screen. Plus the reason HTC went with with the pentile version is because the battery life is better with it than the RGB version (same reason Samsung went with pentile on the GS 3 instead of RGB). What kind of trouble have you run into with all these apps that you speak of because of the screen? What on earth are you talking about again??? Youtube videos will look crap no matter what settings you put them on??? The youtube videos look great.
Seriously, it sounds to me like you have a faulty one s if that is truly what you are experiencing.......
And after all that you still think the 1S is the best android device there is

So...Would you recommend the 7" tab?

After reading a few reviews for the tab various websites complain about the apparent stuttering or lag when doing basic activities and all have different minor complaints. So my questions to the xda community are:
1)Would you recommend somebody buy this tablet for £200? If not what would you recommend?
2)Any complaints about the physical components of the tablet? - the screen matters to me the most tbh.
3) Do the custom roms fix any software related complaints you have of the device?
Thanks in advance!
I'm quite happy with the device, for the price. Sure you can better tablets for more and worse ones for less.
screen is fine, lag doesn't bother me too much though. I just wanted something to work out the box with no messing about as my partner wanted to use it a lot. If it were just for me I would be more tempted to mess about with roms and rooting.
For sure. I had 4 other 7 inchers before this one. I've had mine a month or so I guess and I'm happy with it. If I wasn't I would have surely returned it. I'm quick to take things back.
Plus, there's some kick ass development going on for this tablet.
For the price.. yeah, especially if you bought it at Costco. I just wish I could get a 4g version that works with T-Mobile.
Only reservations on recommendation is cause I would wait for the nexus tablet to do a comparison first.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G with Beats Audio using Tapatalk 2
Probably. For the pricepoint I think it's still the best option on the market for the moment.
It'll also depend which phone you're coming from for a reference point as far as expectations. For the vast majority of phone devices out there the performance on this feels just as responsive. If you're using a Galaxy S2 device though it does feel a step down from that. Likewise the screen (while higher res) is definitely no AMOLED when it comes to wow factor. The slightly older Plus flavor of this tablet gives you that, but at an additional cost. For this price I think the screen's fine.
My biggest complaint is the memory card issue. And that really is a larger Android issue not specific to the device itself. You can put a 32GB card in. But it's essentially useless as far as most apps are concerned as most are programmed to only see the much smaller internal SD card. If you root there's ways around that, but it's frustrating that you have to do so. Most nicer Android devices now have both internal SD with an option for external SD so Android needs to start accounting for that at the system level.
Thanks for the replies, may hold out until google i/o before purchasing though.

Looking for cheap android phone for dashcam but...

Needs to be able to take 64gb (128gb would be better but not necessary) micro SD card that can handle class 10 or at least 10MB/s write. This isn't a what to buy market thread, it is a suggestion thread in case anybody makes offers. Please note that mods.
Preferably at least 5mp camera but 8mp would be preferred. Capable of taking solid 1080p video, but solid recording @ 720p is fine. OIS would be real nice, but I don't think there are very many low/mid range phones that have that. I've looked at moto E and moto G but from my research they'll take 64gb but only work stable at class 4 or lower with fat32 format. And I would prefer exfat be compatible, very much so, but i will do fat32 if I have to if all other mandatory prerequisites are met.
Also would like it to be jelly bean or higher for stability purposes. I am currently using a Motorola atrix MB860 but it randomly reboots every once in awhile even though I undid my aggressive undervolts. I DO NOT want that worry in case something happens and the incident is not recorded. It is still working awesome, but at well over 3 years old the USB port is showing it's wear enough that I am using a right angle micro USB adapter because the angled pull helps keep the plug in. A straight micro USB falls out every once in awhile.
And I also would prefer a swappable battery or one that is easy user replaceable if it is sealed. The atrix is on it's second battery, though the first one is still serviceable and good enough for backup just in case. And would prefer a phone that has minimum 8gb internal storage, preferably 16gb, but I'll settle for 4gb if all the other prerequisites are met. A decent sensitive microphone would be handy for those situations I might need to record audio with witnesses or police but is not high priority.
To reiterate, I've researched the moto G and E but too many possible compromises without fully testing one personally. I've also checked out my mom's LG e90 or whatever it is called that T-Mobile has discounted to $100 from $250. It takes terrible pictures, the video is questionable and it not being a flagship I don't trust it all that much. Plus adding nova launcher over LG's terrible skin majorly affects widgets that can be added or worse, not added.
I am looking for something in $150 price range or cheaper, but will pay up to $200 if there are no compromises. Used is fine if USB port isn't worn out and camera lens isnt scratched. A led flash, or any kind of flash is not necessary at all, but handy for a quick flashlight.
Sorry for long post but figure this might be handy for other people that might be interested. Daily roads voyager is an awesome app to utilize as dash cam. It has come in handy for criminal/civil incidents twice already and several times to report litterers when I got home and got their license plate. Don't mess with Texas. Lol. I've considered a glaxy s or another atrix but they have gingerbread and I don't wanna deal with that.
So anybody has some good suggestions that I don't know about or come across? Oh, and preferably 4.5" screen or smallest 4". I tried a galaxy note2 and it was awesome in every way, but just too damn big, and the weight made it vibrate way too much and makes it harder to see minute details when it moves around too much. Hope y'all have some goo d suggestions. Thanks for reading this far and if you have thanks for a suggestion if you have one. I will be sure to update whatever I settle on so other people can get in on the dash cam bandwagon.
