Looking for some thoughts, and opinions....sepcs, hardware(all) comparison, camera quality, in call quality, etc.. just overall thoughts!!? I'm asking because I'm contemplating doing a 30 day exchange for a Fascinate.
Thank You
My gf is thinking about this as phone as well.
I have an incredible and it's what i would personally choose after looking at the specs and software differences.
There are definitely things about the fascinate i like... notification drop down menu that includes common on/off switches like GPS, wifi, bluetooth... of course the Super AMOLED Screen... the app menu scrolls left to right...stock battery is 1500 mah... and... that's about it really.
i find the biggest disadvantage (to me) of the fascinate is 2 GBs of internal storage!! wtf? seriously samsung? what a joke. and of course there is the Bing problem (for non-rooted users)... i guess the bing problem might go away with the froyo update? who knows..
anyways, it's not my decision and i wont push the incredible onto my gf. there is definitely a part of me that wants to mess around with the samsung and check out the sweet screen it has.
if i got the samsung i would totally root it but i personally would NOT root her phone. i just don't want to be responsible and i also don't want to feel like i need to "maintain" her phone by updating ROMs for her.. on the other hand if she got the incredible i would probably root it just because there are very STABLE ROMs for it now.
so really, the decision is between a rooted incredible or a stock samsung.
HTC is overall the best of the best
just talked it over... i told her to go for the samsung just because of the 30 day return/trade in policy... i mean why not? plus i get to play with it.
apparently it comes with a 16 GB sd card which is pretty sweet, but i find the 2 GB of internal memory makes it pretty much mandatory to go the apps2sd route. On the incredible i don't even care about apps2sd with 8 GBs of internal storage.
anyways, ill be checkin the dev forum for the fascinate daily now... rooting seems to be a MUST if i chose the samsung.
I received mine yesterday and after playing about with it I'm really liking it. I told T-mobile I wasn't too sure about the phone as I know that there will be bigger phones coming out soon so they will phone back Monday to see if I want to send it back.
From a female point of view, the phone is the perfect size to carry around in my hand bag, I have had the hero since Dec 09 and it was the first phone that i rooted and I didn't lose interest in it throughout the time I had it as there were so many roms to flash.
I know this phone will get rooted once the s-off thing is sorted so will be able to flash roms onto it, I'm not a massive gamer so I guess phones like sensation will be a waste on me and the wi'fi issue on the ds isn't too big as i don't tend to use it landscape unless playing a game.
So far the desire s is really smooth, i'm enjoying able to use so many functions which I wasn't able to use on the gingerbread roms for hero.
So are you happy that you chose the desire S?
i would like to hear about others views too
as i still didn't get my phone (its getting really annoying)
well if you have nothing to say you might as well shut up
dont you think so?
@shanz, dual cores are not only for gaming
they are considerably faster, you have hdmi out capability better battery life
i would be satisfied with a single core if it would be priced under a dual core
anyway the price is coming down slowly, i saw it today for 400E
I like it. My full review at the following URL:
http://tbreak.com/tech/2011/04/htc-desire-s-smartphone-review/
I've had mine for a few days now. My first Android phone, so I can't really compare it to anything other than my old iPhone 3G. I love it. Besides dropping the Wi-Fi if I hold it a bit weird, it's perfect for me.
Very satisfied Desire S user here.
Love the size, built quality, very fast, capable camera and much improved battlife compared to ol'Desire.
Really MASSIVE problems in germany
some people are at their 5th return
the problem is that the glass is too small and there is a big gap between it and the metal
also the battery cover leaves open places for some people

I come from nexus one, wich again a very very good device! Hard for me to leave it away. Now about desire s:
1. Super quality of build, the aluminium feel and beint well compressed by size just makes it perfect.
2. Was amazed about screen quality, did not expected that at all!
3. Video call camera good quality! Beats my brothers galaxy S video call camera!
The downsides are few, first being that i allways have a luck on taking faulty phones,my volume locker up is very sensitive, small presure activates it,and the button clicks normal.
Other than that is sense ui wich i like it in some ways, but cyanogen is snapier and i really wait for that root and custom recovery!

My first Android phone. coming from WM6.5 (custom Roms)
Love it so far....the feel, the weight, the screen size all perfect for me.
Wi-fi issue doesn't bother me, as don't use phone in landscape.
Can't wait for them to sort S-OFF/root
Phone like Sensation simply too big! plus I don't game on the phone....so don't need the dual core.
Desire S was exactly what I was waiting for: an up to date version of a nearly flawless phone with excellent performance, aesthetics & overall build.
Picked out this creature (coming from an HD mini) to jump the Android bandwagon & have been in a permanent jawdrop ever since.
I don't know maybe in your location the phones are with that wifi problem, mine has no such problem, covered it all in my palm all i could lose was 1 lin in wifi and sometimes even nothing on 3g.It's weird about that problem, yet i have none regarding that.
I got mine last Friday as a replacement for the original Desire. Love it so far, the size, the design it's really all very nice. Definitely feels faster and smoother than the previous Desire. Loving the gig of space for apps over the measily hundred something megs that the original Desire had.
I do notice the wifi drop out when held in landscape, so for those that do a lot of browsing over wifi this might be a show stopper.
Only other thing is that even though I know it uses a gorilla glass, I can't help but feel naked without a screen protector on it.
I got mine last Friday to replace my Nexus One. I've been using the Desire S exclusively since then and I like it, I don't have any issues with WiFi or anything else. I have to admit that the screen is usually better (damn Pentile matrix), except at night or under direct sunlight.
I don't like the Micro USB on the left side, when it's plugged the cable gets in the way or twists in strange positions. I don't like that it doesn't have a trackball, even an optical one. However it does have a notification LED, unlike many other smartphones out there (Nexus S, Samsung Galaxy S, LG Optimus 2X, etc.) The touchpad sensor seems to work fine (whoo! ), all common gestures work, including rotation in Google Maps. Opening the battery cover is a pain, maybe I just don't get it, but it took me a while just to plug my SIM card.
Not a huge improvement, but it works better on some of the areas where I had most trouble (internal storage was the main problem for me).
I love the speed, size, build quality and battery life
My only complaint is that i cannot run custom roms (yet)
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
Got it for the missus as a birthday present today. I have the original desire.
First impressions are good, though pulling down the notifications window was somehow not as easy on the dS. Kept missing it. And then when you do pull it down, the settings Tab that HTC has added is a little awkward to switch to succesfully without rolling up the notifications window. Could just be practice.
Can i ask - is it possible to install a different launcher on a HTC sense phone? (i rooted my desire s to an AOSP rom, so never tried this)
I'd like to put laucherpro or Zeam on there for her as they feel snappier and the docks are a huge improvement.
You can install any launcher you want, there is no need to root it. I have ADW.Launched (and not rooted). But you'll loose the ability to have the HTC Widgets (if you care about them).

How can one get their hands on an s-off Desire S?
Thanks

Just got my desire S today, upgraded from HTC legend. I'm blown away by the built and quality of the handset's construction. Only had it for a couple of hours, performance is great. No problem with WiFi so far, I had it connected to WPA2 secured WiFi-G. Love the new sense 3 UI, shortcuts to enable/disable WiFi/bluetooth..etc
The handset was also S-ON, can't wait for a new exploit to root it and even S-OFF the better. Hoping to install miui once custom rom is possible.
I'm due for a phone upgrade. Right now I got the LG Optimus-T on T-Mobile. I'm not a huge fan of the phone, and plus the replacement timing couldn't have been more perfect; the LG is falling apart. I did some research, and I'm leaning towards getting the HTC One S as a replacement. It's really lame that there is no SD card option.. I was reading that the phone comes with a certain amount of online storage space; how much?
I'm a musician and this phone supposedly excels in that department. I use the internal microphones on these phone to record guitar riffs and stuff; how is the built-in microphone? The internal mics are pretty hit or miss, so I'm hoping to hear good news about the one on this phone.
I'm not a fan of the large screen phones. This one seems to be one of the smaller, but it's still larger than my LG.
I've read that there is alot of bloat software that comes pre-loaded on the phone, and that it doesn't let you uninstall any of it. I guess the only way to get around that is to Root the phone. Since there is no SD card, it's important not to have any Apps that you don't use taking up space.
Thanks,
-Adam
Internal space is 16GB. Avaible actual space is around 14GB.
Since there is no SD card why not go for the Galaxy S3 instead?

The 4.3" screen on the One S is a bit too big for my liking; 4.8" sounds too large. I need to go to the store to check out the phone sizes in person.
4.3" - once you've got it you'll wonder what you did without it. The phone is not too big and build quality is excellent, you won't find the One S falling apart on you.
Trying your choices out in a shop is a good idea, especially how they work for you. The One S has the most responsive screen of any phone I've ever used and the unibody design makes it very strong, listen to any Samsung creak as it flexes in your hand
The fixed internal memory might be a problem for some but not for me, I had a 32Gb card in my last phone but found I hadn't used more than 4-5Gb of it. As a musician you may want more for mp3s but I'm betting you've already got a decent mp3 player for that.
Honestly it sounds like you'd be better off with the GSIII. Yeah, the screen size kinda sucks, but it's worth it. I'll admit the One S fits in the hand much more comfortably than the GSIII.
The lack of storage space kills me. 14Gb useable, 25Gb online via dropbox BUT only for a limited period, a year I think. Pretty pathetic that HTC would go as far as to cut out our primary storage option so Dropbox could monetize. Jerks.
This phone has been pushed for musicians and music lovers alike, but that has a lot to do with the Beats audio, which if you're unfamiliar with it, kinda really sucks. You said you play guitar? Beats is for people who play Macbooks. All you could be looking at is a stupidly oversampled bass tone and no improvements in sound anywhere else. I actually turn off Beats to prevent damage to my earbuds. As for the onboard mic, it's alright. A decent option for recording on the go. I haven't tried the GSIII's for comparison or anything. I've always used my iPod Touch for recording riffs and it's DRASTICALLY better than this phone, but, I sold it.
If you do decide to go with this phone, you're definitely going to want to unlock the bootloader and install a more lightweight ROM like CM10 or AOKP. It's a shame you're buying it now when that process has become more complex due to more bootloader restrictions. Another thing the GSIII has over this phone.

I agree with everything above but dropbox is for 2 years. The amount of time the average person uses a phone.
What I really love about the phone is the size and the build quality. And the consistency of that build quality, there are hardly any compromises made in this. You get solid performance, top notch sounds from both headset and speaker (yes beats is a gimmick, but it does show how much efford they made to get the best possible sound quality), a really solid build design which fits your hand perfectly, and a really awesome camera with a very intuitive ui. The sense ui is great as well, although its not everyone's flavor it really preforms well these days and adds allot of features over vanilla android (nexus phones). I don't know how well this phone can record sound though.
The GSIII is a great phone as well, but its plastic build always reminds me of Tupperware. Besides this, the sg3 suffers (still) from some software quirks which causes about 15% of the playstore apps to crash (on stock firmware).
I really love the design of this phone, everything is very well worked out and htc used all high end parts for this device. If I have to point a downside its the screen, although its contrast and colors are really great. But the resolution ain't that high, therefor some details are lost.
As for storage and bloat. Try to get a unlocked phone, most carriers pre instal some apps on top of sense which your can't remove. As for sense it self, you wont notice this so called bloat anymore in speed nor batterylife. As for the storage, i got 25gb dropbox storage for 2 years (this is my estimation for my phone untill i replace it aswell). You get 10gb internal storage, you wont get more on aosp roms as you cant repartition this internal storage.

I don't think that this One S phone is the right one for me. Beats audio sounds terrible and not having a SD card sound even more terrible. Someone recommended I wait a couple weeks for the Nexus 4 to come out; I haven't done any research on it yet. I'm going to the store today so I can figure out what dimensions I can deal with (i.e. screen size).
Thanks for all the help everyone,

The Nexus 4 doesn't have a SDcard-slot either, and only 16GB of storage. If it really is a dealbreaker, than the Nexus 4 won't be the device you're looking for either. However, considering the extreme low price tag ($350) on the Nexus 4 when bought via the Play Store, you might just want to take the lack of expandable storage for granted

That's what it seems like. They're also locking the batteries in place, preventing people from upgrading to higher mAh batteries and causing them to have to replace the entire phone if their battery goes out. I don't think they realize those are two of the things a lot of the Android fanbase hates about Apple products.
So far, I am loving the phone, and I have no faults with it as of yet. Yes, when you zoom in on pictures, they can be a bit blurry blown up on the computer, but I could care less since I'm not a professional photographer. Feels great in my hand, and people keep saying my phone looks sickkkk.
Oh, and this thing is LOOUUDDD. Louder than any other phone I've come across. The only lag I saw was while installing all my apps.
What about you guy's? Post pros and cons.

I've never owned an HTC phone before, and the UI for me is a little tough to get used to - especially when my other devices are more 'stock' Android, - a Nexus 7 and Moto X. I've had plenty of skinned devices before, Samsung and Moto pre-Google, so I know there's a learning curve. The hardware though, it's about as close as I'll ever get to an iPhone, and it's fantastic. The build quality, the buttons, the material, top notch. Coming from "flagship" Sammy phones (Galaxy S3, S4 and Note 2 and 3's) - can't hold a candle to this. Biggest con (aside from the Sense UI) is the camera. I know I might need to tweak some settings, but it should be (in theory) a much better image quality just on auto settings.
I'd say, all things considered, the hardware is the biggest perk, but I have a feeling I'll still be using my Moto X more than 50% of the time.
Now, if we can get CM in the future, that's another story altogether, but I think it's too early to tell if someone will be able to root and unlock. Haven't kept up on the root/ROM scene since I loaded Beans on my Note 3 running 4.3 back in January.
The best phone I ever had, hands down. Second in line was the original M7 HTC One. Before that, my thrid favorite was my SGN. I havve had multiple phones in between and none come close to the M8...
I will say I HATE Blinkfeed but just download your favorite launcher (I use Apex)

You can use the "manage home screen pages" setting to remove blinkfeed. No need to go for an outside launcher because of Blinkfeed.

I figured that was the case.
I thought it would be best to mention that since you made it sound like it was the only way to get away from Blinkfeed.
I had a DNA, then the HTC one, then I had a Galaxy S4. This M8 is the best. That bezel at the bottom is confusing...i keep wanting to the old home button. HTC phones are the experience I prefer. I don't really care about root. I used to..but i realized I have no time to install cute themes...and i only used 2 root apps. I would like root only for free tethering. Im still on an unlimited plan.
I would say this phone is amazing and I have yet to properly play with it.
The HTC transfer tool worked pretty good...even transfered my settings and put my home screen the way I like it.
The focus thing is kinda gimmickey but the camera is awesome. Can't wait to make some porn with this bad boy. Lmao

Loving mine, coming from the DNA. Don't much care for the on screen buttons but other than that. I like it. To me the camera is not as bad as a lot of sites are saying. Here's a quick pic I just took. The fire looks so clean.

best phone in stock form to date! haven't had one hiccup, lag, glitch nothing! just flawless buttery performance! cant wait until we get root and get rid of bloat and some custom roms. phone will be a beast!!!
I am a G2 user on ATT but went to the Verizon store because I was dying to see this beautiful masterpiece, overall it is a very exquisite design and feels very nice.
I have never owned a HTC product and would like to in the future, but Damn this sense UI is very appealing to the eyes and simple.
Very fast phone with zero lag.
I spent a lot of time with the camera and I must say it isn't TERRIBLE but it isn't better than anything we have out now.
Where the One will accelerate is in low light and that is already proven....
Overall I'd say HTC WILL SELL TONS.

agreed. the key is zero lag. phone is stupid fast and everything is instant. this phone is going to be a huge success!!
So far so good. Sense is as bad as ever but it's easy enough to get rid of the bulk of it by installing another launcher. I also loaded the stock email app, clock and a few other things as I prefer the stock versions and disabled most of the bloatware.
The notification bar is more cluttered than it really needs to be. About half the bar tends to be taken up by system state icons leaving very little room for actual notifications. Also the second camera is pretty gimmicky. I'm not sure it's a device I'd buy solely based on the camera.
Overall though, I've never had a piece of hardware that felt so good in the hands. I've run a G1, a Nexus One, a MyTouch 4g, a Thunderbolt, a S3, a Droid Razr along with a few other phones as daily drivers and none of them even come close to this one in terms of hardware. It's just a shame that sense is on it.
This is my first HTC phone and so far its all good. I love the feel of it, its so solid with the uni body design. Im definitely looking forward to custom roms ect. in the future. Tootles Galaxy S4...you've been a b!tch

sense bad? I don't know how you can say that. blows every other ui out of the water with what they have done with it. sense 6.0 is instant, lag/hiccup free, butter smooth what more do you want? go back to a nexus if you think sense is bad!!!
If there was a pure android phone with this sort of build quality available on Verizon I'd probably seriously consider it. I'll try to refrain from having opinions though since some people are touchy about those.

There's a lot to be said for the hardware and touchwiz isn't really any better. I'm not sure why it ruffles your feathers so much that someone might find the hardware compelling enough to overcome a UI that they aren't crazy about.
Coming from the DNA:
Same 5" screen, same feel in my hands...
But now I don't have to cup my hand behind the speaker to hear what's playing. Boom sound is simply awesome for such a little guy.
While I would like to have seen the camera resolution be in the 5-8mp range, I can't deny that this phone can take a pic in very low light. So that is a true plus for me.
But best of all is the SDXC slot is back. Thank you HTC.

Ditto, not one problem
every so often i get an 'Xperia Home' FC. nothing that can't be fixed with a reboot though
Overall I like the phone, but there are a few bummers you should be aware of (it certainly isn't flawless):
(1) The D6603 I got is 16 gb (weak sauce) and if you keep the device stock, there is no option to move app data to storage. Usually 16 gb is enough for regular apps, but if you download games then you'll quickly run out of space. And so far, you CANNOT move app data to the SD card (only media). From what I understand this is a Android 4.4.4 issue or policy
(2) I'm a heavy media user and you can't manage your media via file explorers (I like ES file explorer the best). Because of the space issue, I keep all my media on the SD card but can't delete them using the phone only. I have to connect to a PC via USB (sort of a hassle and very iphone-ish). When I try to delete, it says something about security in Android 4.4.4
(3) The way to solve (2) is to root the phone. But oh yea, if you unlock the bootload and root the phone you lose DRM keys and your camera will not perform well in low light.
I unlocked bootload and rooted my old phone (HTC One M7) and loved the freedom and functionality I got, but I also realized the camera went bad (I am just guessing it is the same thing - losing DRM keys, but am not certain). I am hesitant to unlock / root this phone because I want a decent camera and do'nt want to lose other functionality that really sold me on the phone (the PS4 remote play).
Oh and (4) At least for me, the remote play is sort of laggy, but I have yet to test this thoroughly. Looks like I'll be able to play RPGs, but maybe not action games (am really looking forward to Far Cry 4).
Just an FYI on #2 above that you can actually write to the SD card using the internal "File Commander" app. I also much prefer ES but it doesn't write to the SD card. File Commander will let you copy stuff around no problem because it's a pre-loaded app. It doesn't show hidden files unless you fork over some bucks though - to bad Sony didn't just pre-install ES.
Seems you can even uninstall File Commander then re-install it and it still lets you write to the SD card. When I first got my phone I uninstalled File Commander and installed ES. Then discovered ES couldn't write to the SD Card (didn't know why at the time) so I re-installed File Commander and was able to write to the card again.
As for the phone itself, I agree with the others - this is a fantastic phone. I upgraded from a Galaxy Nexus though, so it was quite a jump to this one.
The size is right, performance is great and battery life is awesome.
My minor complaints:
- Sony should have pre-installed a file manager that lets you see hidden files without forking over more money.
- I find the magnetic connector to be a bit of a pain. I prefer the 'pogo pins' in the Nexus for desktop charging.
- The status pulls down when you tap the top of the screen instead of pulling down from the top. I often drop it down unintentionally.
- It's real slippery with the glass back.
thanks guys for all of your responses
The non TMO versions don't seem to have many issues. Its the D6616 (T-Mobile) you should be worried about, according to TMO QC on that model was not great, they are waiting for new batches to get better QC. They told me I was not the only one with multiple exchanges, it's happened at other stores in other states. My first one was actually mailed to me....
That's why I said buy directly from TMO you can sift through the stock and pick. If you get the D6616 from Sony and get a bad apple won't be as easy, you have to do a warranty replacement which takes time.
Mine also none problem.
Sent from my D6653 using XDA Free mobile app
I've had the phone for 2 weeks. Here are the cons of this phone:
-128 gb storage SD is more space than I currently need
-Phone looks so nice, I'm worried someone will want to steal it
-I had to stretch a lot farther on my last phone to hit the power buttons, so now my hand isn't sore anymore. This leads to the ability to masturbate more, which is becoming addictive for me, thus a problem.
-The feel is so perfect that everything else in the world seems pale in comparison
-So many people ask me about my phone when I see it that I'm running out of room for facebook friends
-Too many girls want to have sex with me because I own the Z3 and it's distracting me from work.
Other than that, great phone. Would recommend to the OP
Screen is too blue. Auto mode on camera comes out awful. Speaker notifications only come out of one speaker. Message tones are too quiet. Tap to wake doesn't always work. Speakers crackle with some sounds/video's/youtube etc. SD port flap is not flush with phone. Too many fingerprints on back of black phone. Apps force close here and there. Wallpaper takes too long to load once unlocked. Lockscreen can take too long to come up. Apps lock up sometimes so trying to get back to homescreen sometimes lags.
I'm sure there's more, but it's far from perfect.
Nice phone though and it is waterproof.
Couple of issues difficult to root and lack of custom roms.
Screen size bit small.
Camera not as good as note 4.
Very slippery but still like the finish.
Internal memory.
Overall nice looking phone not quite high range at best when compared to Note 4. Much better then Z2 but not enough of an upgrade.
No problems that I can find so far. I hate reading these forums just for this reason too. One thing I have noticed which doesn't bother me but not sure if it's suppose to be this way is that the power button has a bit of a wobble from side to side to it. Also, yea it's very slippery so hopefully nothing happens before I get my TPU case for it haha.

The light wobble is normal nothing to worry about.

I figured as much, but thought I'd share. Thanks for reassuring though!

I must be lucky as my Tmo one has been top notch.
The only issue I'm seeing is Tmo blocks tethering. But as I understand it all grandfathered plans will be dropped and the Simple Choice plans have a bucket of Tether anyway.

So far, ix-nay. All the ones I've found have been disabled on the Z3. Can't even add dun to the APN types and there's a Kitkat bug where Foxfi won't work.
But, like I say, in maybe a month everyone on tmobile post-pay will have a tethering plan anyway. They're dropping old grandfathered plans.
I have a D6616 that I got on day 1 of the T-Mobile release and I have had zero problems with the phone. The stock messenger app is terrible coming from a LG G3, but other than that I have no complaints at all.

Hangouts is pretty much replacing the stock messenger, just like stock browser was replaced by Chrome.
