[Q] Please answer these questions, new owner - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

My uncle gave me a new Verizon samsung galaxy s3 because he switched over to AT&T and bought an iPhone 5.. I personally myself have an iPhone 5 too, but I been trying to try out this s3. He gave it to me and this is the first time I ever use a phone other than an iPhone.. When I turn it on, on the bottom of the screen it says, custom, what does this mean?
I been reading about the different roms or whatever, how do I know which one is installed so far? I know it's a verizon 1535, and I'm in the process of trying to unlock it using this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32900970&postcount=221
However I want to know how I can check what rom or whatever I got (jellybean etc), I am completely new to this and don't know anything at all. I just want it to be up to date on the latest firmware so I can unlock it and use it for a couple weeks to see how it compares to the iPhone.. Thanks guys
I'm a news too, so anything else I should know or check about this phone, please let me know.. Like baseband, or anything of that nature.. I want to know everything thanks

So just to clarify, your trying to use the Verizon S3 on AT&T?
Edit: You can check if the phone has a custom rom by going into settings and scroll down to the bottom and click about phone and post what it says under Legal Information. It should show Model number, Android Version, Baseband Version, Kernal, and Build number

Also if it is showing Custom, it may already be unlocked. I would suggest doing alot of reading in the stickies before you try anything. This is a totally different animal than an iPhone and you can do some serious damage of you don't know what you are doing. Good luck and keep asking questions, after you do some reading, of coarse.

Yeah that's what I'm trying to do.. And I tried reading the stickies but there's so many threads, just talking about roms and etc
Model version : SCH-1535
Android Version : 4.0.4
Baseband : 1535VRLHE
Hardware Version : 1535.10
That's what it says

Kernel : 3.0.8-1092717
And I have an iPhone 5 sim, but it already fits in the tray. I'm just trying to make this the easiest possible, thanks for the replies btw

I'd recommend just using the GS3 as is for now so you can become familiar with Android. How can you know what changes you want if you've never even used the stock version?
You'll definitely need a new sim since they're different sizes. VZW will give one to you for free.

I got a sim tray that turns my sim into the verizon sized sim. And believe me I've used the phone all day everyday already.. I'm just trying to make it official for AT&T and what is the easiest way of going abut it

Anyone?

To clarify, you had a VZW iPhone5 with the new micro SIM, got a tray to fit the normal mini SIM, and are using that in this new VZW SGS3?
If not,you have a Verizon phone: The sims are completely different in more than just size: AT&T needs if for all GSM, VZW just uses it for LTE and the CDMA portion is tied to the phone ID/programming.
What do you mean "make it official for AT&T?" Do you want to use it on AT&T? If so, see above. If you mean official for VZW, go get a SIM from a corporate store (unless the whole old iPhone one is working with the tray).

I have AT&T, and am using my iPhone 5 currently. I have a verison gs3 without a sim that I want to unlock and use. I have a sim tray that converts my AT&T micro nano sim, to a regular micro sim. The problem is, I want to unlock the gs3, and use it with AT&T.
But what rom or whatever do I have with the above information? And I been reading the thread, but there iPod read there's an update that allows the phone to be used globally without doing anything. That's why I'm asking

Go search through this thread, it's your only possibility: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809314
First post on pg 23, saw some attempts to do what you want, but didn't read through it all to confirm working in that manner.
Changing the ROM isn't going to do what your looking for, you need to be completely changing the way the phone works.

Ok but I can use any rom? Latest update? I don't know which rom I have

From the sounds of it, you seem stock, read and read more, Verizon gs3 doesn't work with international version of the gs3 roms if you try you'll end up with a brick.it's Kool you wanna try out the gs3, but it's really different from an iPhone.

You have to use Verizon gs3 ROMs with that phone. You could try incubus touchwiz hybrid roms I believe there was at&t one. Maybe the note2 rls9. If that's not what your looking for just Google and if it can be done you will find it somewhere.

You might also look under the device settings. Many time custom ROM builders will put the name of their ROM in the Build number.

I forgot to add that coming from the iPhone you may not know how to get there. You'll need to go the main screen (which usually is what you start on when you turn your phone on) then the menu button and settings then look at the very bottom for "About Phone". How that helps.

Yeah so I could download any roam from this section of the forum? Since its specifically for the verison gs3, can I leave the phone normal and still use it for AT&T or do I need to be on a custom rom or something?

You could download this app called root checker from the market it's free, better safe then sorry, takes seconds to verify you have root.

It said "sorry! This device does not have proper root access"
So that means I'm stock?

If you don't have root then your stock, you could look for the super user icon
Also just to double check

No I dont have that, guess I'm stock. So then I just follow the instructions for the global unlock and I'll be fine?

Google Wallet compatibility

I'm rolling with a Nexus S right now, and just discovered and started using Google Wallet. I know that the One X(L) has the NFC chip, but can anyone confirm that it is compatible with Google Wallet? It's not a deal-breaker, but it is up there on my list of features that I'd rather not do without.
I thought wallet is only available on sprint/ unlocked nexus phones.
Depends on Carrier. AT&T wont allow it because its putting all of its resources into Isis.
Seems to work on the nexus s that I have on at&t, although I have not tested it by tapping the phone yet. The software installed and I was able to set it up though.
AT&T might not support it, but we will find a way to put it on

There could be so many security holes though if we went about it that way. I think in this case it'd be best to wait for whatever comes out ISIS or whatever.
I tried it on my Rogers One X and it says there's a problem with the secure element

Has anyone managed to get this working?
You get $10 for free by using it FYI.
We will get a working APK method eventually of putting it on. Verizon's Gnex wasn't allowing it either but people found a way to get it to work. Its only a matter of time IMO.

The Modaco solution is only for the international. It won't work with ATT
Honestly I'm really hating At&t for crippling this device, I really want to try google wallet, and don't want to have to resort to hacks to make it work, but I will if i get the chance
With the main thread for Google Wallet (GW) now reaching well into 200 pages it is getting to the point where it takes hrs to find out if GW will work for you.
lgkahn, daitienshi, and myself have develped a spreadsheet for tracking what works and does not. Feel free to check the list. If the rom you are running is not listed give it a try and let one of us know through a private msg, and we will add it to the list. If you happen to have GW working please let us know so that we can add it to our spreadsheet.

That makes no sense, if its an at&t branded phone then its going to support what at&t allows. Just because you use another carrier doesn't mean that changes
Starting sometime soon unlocking phones for other carriers is going to become illegal so its definitely not going to be a priority

Lol makes perfect sense to me since I don't use at&t. Especially since at&t will unlock your phone with a 10 minute phone call to their customer service.
Also will us prepaid users even be able to use Isis? Probably not, so will get screwed.
How are they going to make sim unlocking illegal? Jail breaking is already perfectly legal and you can even clone your phone as long as you own both devices and pay for your service.

Sprint in south Florida

OK I'm starting this post for my buddy who has a sprint galaxy nexus we live in south Florida and spring took there towers off line today to do some service to there towers well when they put them back online they deactivated his service and when he called customer service he told them his phone was rooted and unlocked with a custom ROM and they told him that sprint probably seen that his phone was rooted and that is why they deactivated his device well he has it back on now and is getting no data what so ever
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
cant see that happening tbh, why would a phone network care about what you do to your device? Only the phone manufacturer would care about you invalidating your warranty if you were to book it in for repair.

Tell him to do a profile update. Settings -> About Phone -> Sprint updates -> Update Profile (if I remember correctly) and then Update PRL. Otherwise just call up Sprint and tell them he's not getting data and they should be able to refresh his profile from their end. Also, they can't do anything about you rooting your phone as it's yours. If he starts tethering like 50GB a month or something stupid like that, then yeah there's an issue. But I'm assume it's normal usage. Why he even bothered telling the lady his phone is rooted is beyond me...No offense, but that was pretty stupid.

Hey what's up guys? I'm the guy with the Sprint issues. It makes absolutely no sense to me at all why they would care about my device but the way she made it sound was that Sprint cannot restore my 3g data because my device was rooted. She told me that my best bet would be to flash back to stop and start over. She concluded with an offer to follow up with me after I flashed back to stock and she could rectify the data situation then. Call me crazy but I think I want the opinion of the guys who know what's going on and not the one of the chick reading off her computer screen. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Several things I have to say:
1. Do not EVER EVER EVER tell your phone company that you rooted your device because the things that run through their mind are:
a) ****! Now he can tether without paying!
b) We're not fixing your phone now because you voided the warranty.
I hope she didn't put notes on your account for b) because that can prevent you from getting your phone repaired in a Sprint store.
Also, it depends what software is on your phone. Have you tried going back to stock? Have you tried calling Sprint again and not mentioning that your phone is rooted?

So I don't know. I'm learning and the main thing I'm learning is that the more I try to learn about this ****, the worse it's getting. The thing I hate the most is that this is a way to break away from the communist machine that is Sprint but somehow they still have me by the balls.

Technician notes are different from account notes, so if you were to go into a store for a repair I'm sure they wouldn't see that. Try reactivating your phone. Call Sprint, tell them:
"I called a while ago because I was having issues with data. A rep told me to punch in a code in the dialer and he also gave me the MSL code for my phone, but I can't find where I wrote it down. Do you mind telling me how to re-do the Handsfree Activation?"
Follow the instructions and see if that works. If nothing comes up on the dialer when you punch in the code, your ROM doesn't have Handsfree-Activation included. Try going to a stock ROM or ROM that has the Sprint menus in it.

I'm gonna have to jump on this first thing in the morning. Thanks for the advice. I will post any results on this thread as they unfold.
I would go as far to say it would be illegal for the phone company to cut you off for tethering a device that you own. (There are apps such as FoxFi that bypass the 'tethering tax' mobile networks try to claim) However, as someone said previously if you are downloading heavily then I guess they could cut you off for that.
At T-Mobile, NO such policy of cutting you off exists and they rely solely on throttling and packet shaping.

Thing is, he barely knows what he's doing. He's rooted and ROM'd but that's it. He's new to this whole thing. I don't even think he was tethering; I was just using it as an example for why a phone company wouldn't want you rooting their devices. But yeah I agree, you can't get cut off for modifying your device like that unless it was doing something that it logically should not be able to do (like if you were using it as a 24/7 server to host a website or something crazy).

i know not to send back rooted, ive unrooted b4....just want to know whats on the stock power menu lol
Verizon can see if you are rooted and any custom rom or modified kernel you are using. They have full access to all the information in the "about phone" screen in settings. If they wanted to deny a warranty claim due to being rooted, all they would have to do is look on their systems and see what you were running.
bastards said they will charge me 300 something if i send back without the power button
if i jam it in am i screwed either way if i send it back since i already callled??
asurion only has tblolts id rather wait till they out of stock and get rezound

I agree. I have been over my about phone with Verizon several times and even returned rooted phones to them and they never said crap. I think they ask because they want to see if you're going to slip up and tell them some wrong information.

+1 lol Verizon has no way to tell your rooted unless they have your phone in front of them. If they knew, you would be warned as soon as you root your device. Where do these people get their info?? Lol

Yeah most of them don't really care anyway. I had a touch pro 2 from Sprint, first phone I ever rooted. I panicked because I had to send it back, didn't know how to re-lock! Finally after searching and reading and searching I figured it out! Lol

They can see your radio version every time you connect to their towers, They can see your software/kernel/baseband if they like through the information your phone sends to them as you use it. Also they still have stuff like Carrier IQ on phones that COULD even read you your text messages if they wanted. Dont think they cant see it because they can. They just dont let you know they can because it could be considered illegal.

This is BS because if that's the case they would have made me pay full price on two different occasions for phones that were rooted when I sent them back.

Seeing the radio version doesn't tell any carrier that someone is rooted. Being rooted is software related not radio related. Not unless custom radios are around, which is not available for the tbolt and im sure not for any other phone for that matter.
The only info phones send to the network is account information so the tower knows whether or not to provide service. That's it.
If they knew more details about a device then they would have no reason to ask us about our phone. They wouldn't waste their time as the info would pop up on their computer screens. If they saw anything other than the latest official OTA, then they would tell you that they can't do anything and that you voided your warranty so even switching back to stock won't make them change their mind.
The fact they would "waste" time to find out every detail from you pretty much sums up that this info is NOT available to them. CSRs like to help the customer as quickly as possible to get them off the line and help the next. And at this moment, asking customers about their phones is the quickest way.

So you think that those little forum signatures that can tell you what OS you are running, what browser and even your IP know more about your phone than your carrier?
Must be nice to be that gullible.
Think what you will, I know for a fact they can see the information. They literally don't care. The warranty is through another company and has nothing to do with Verizon. It is also perfectly legal to root your phone and do what you want with it as of July 26 2010 http://www.androidguys.com/2010/07/26/rooting-android-phone-longer-crime/
The only thing it does is void any extended warranty you bought. So do restore to stock for returns to asurion and the likes.
They ask you because the lower tier CS people do not have access to your phone information, if you are escalated enough you will eventually find someone who can and will rattle off all your information to you.
If you can provide proof then I will take back what I said and apologize. I've played dumb before in the past just to see if it was possible for tier 2 and 3 (technical departments) to know this information. I simply stated that I didn't know how to access the about phone section. They tried to "help" me access this section and i pretended I was getting frustrated. I asked them to see if there was a way for them to see it on their systems and they told me no. They couldn't "help" me with my pretend issue unless I gave them this info. So all I was given was generic troubleshooting tips. They then stated to take it to the store for the CSR to look at my phone for the software version. I did this on a couple of occasions just to get a different Rep each time.
Yes, your mobile browser sends browser info to a website, and OS info. User agent strings are sent so that a website will know how to display the website on the browser. You can easily set the user agent to the stock HTC user agent. But this is irrelevant to Verizon as I can install different browsers on my phone which have unique user agents for each one. Just because my phone sends a dolphin user agent or maxathon user agent and not the stock HTC user agent, this does not imply I am rooted.
OS version is very easy to hack. You can edit this by going to the build.prop and change the OS version to the stock version and I'm sure there is a hack to fake the kernal (you might have to recompile the kernal to change the name)
All the IP address provides is the owner of the IP address (i.e. verizon) and in some cases, the general location of where the IP is being used. Verizon's LTE/EHRPD network use private IP addresses so it would be difficult to pin point a phone or information based on IP. This network uses Dynamic IPs so your IP will not be the same all the time. You have to pay extra to get a static address (business account). It is illegal to use an IP to gain access to any additional information unless a court order demands this.
The point of this is that you can pretty much make your rooted phone appear stock if it was really necessary to do so. Its a variant of Linux and Linux is very easy to work with if you know what you are doing.

If you can root your phone, then its a start. Your typical average user doesn't know what root means or even care what possibilities exist. I am pretty much the only person at my job who is rooted and I've had people ask me how I got my phone to look a certain way and they want their phone like this. When I explain the root process, they say screw that. Most people I know who are rooted know exactly what they can do with a rooted device. And new comers to rooting eventually pick up speed. Linux may be intimidating at first, but once you play around, you see how easy it is.

well that's underwhelming for people who like to use the stock firmware, wonder if verizon will get jellybean out for the s3 this year...was at my local vzw store yesterday and the sales guy was surprised to see a touchwiz-less S3 running jellybean. then i got an earful about voiding warranty when all i went there to do was get a sim for my wife's nexus. (my old phone, just replaced it with the S3 this week)
Happy to see that error being killed. A couple of areas around Rochester are basically s3 dead zones thanks to that. Not quite as exciting as jb but... enough to make me happy.

The JB upgrade will most likely come in late 1st Q.
No new radios? Nothing updated that needs to be?
Typical verizon and this ****, didn't a UK Update come out in July that fixed some issues? Where the hell is that one...
I had a sim error once, when I went to install my SD card I realized the vzw rep didn't fully insert the sim card... never again since then.

This is a Verizon only issue that NEEDS to be fixed. It is bull that Verizon wasted time locking down the bootloader that they screwed up their device... but to people who live in one of the "dead zones" the phone is all but useless as anything except a music player. Just because it's not an issue you have suffered doesn't mean it's not a necessary and needed fix.

The NO SIM error is ridiculous, and I am glad this will fix it. For those who don't know, some people can hardly use their S3 at times. I've had instances where every time I try to send a text for 20-30 minutes, it says sending, I lose all connections (no network at all) for a minute or two, then it reconnects, rinse, repeat. This happens when trying to send texts AND making a phone call. Imagine if you had an emergency and every time you tried to call your network dropped for 2 minutes.
But I don't know what else this will do to the phone. Disable current root methods? Bootloader issues?

Yes, many of us have the same issues, even in great 4G areas like DC. No new sim card or handset replacement would ever fix it. Took long enough for VZW to release this fix.
As usual if you are rooted/unlocked/running a ROM do NOT download the OTA update. Wait less than 24 hours for someone on the forums to debloat and flash manually. Obviously if you are stock, rooted, and locked go ahead and take the update VZW pushes out.

Yep, planning on it. I'll wait a little longer to be safe. But I would love to be able to use my phone where I have full bars on campus.
Anybody else surprised there was no leak for this build? Or any other build for that matter? Especially having it go live within the week. I don't know maybe seeing so many leaks on previous devices over the years has left me spoiled. Regardless I am looking forward to some new radios.

I'm not familiar with how these updates work on a Samsung phone.....I had a droid x2 and when that phone received and OTA update it would prompt you to download and install the update. I am assuming this will work the same way? I'm stock unrooted but don't want to get stuck that way....I'll let a few people here download and install and say it's safe before installing

That's not good. I really have no desire to root the phone at this point but this may push me in that direction. I'm surprised that's legal.... When updating you typically lose all service briefly, which I would think is a choice up to the user. I would be pissed as hell if this thing updated without me ok'ing it.

phone search still nerfed, doubt that ones coming back in the USA.
I had this no sim error only in a few places around my home area... but one of those areas included my house. Two new sim cards and two new S3s later, I am extremely happy to hear about this fix! Oddly enough, I never got a no sim error here on a 2 week business trip to Utah.
Had to manually load the update tho, now all is well! Thx for the tip!

Buying T-Mobile S4 instead of AT&T?

hi guys,
so i am in the market for a new phone and decided to sticking with Samsung and going to an S4. the problem is that with all the bs about the locked bootloader, i do not feel confident about buying the AT&T model and to be honest, i also don't feel like giving AT&T any of my money. so that leaves me with 2 options: go with the GE which is a lot more expensive and also only comes in white or just buy a T-Mobile model and get it unlocked so i can use it on AT&T. so my question is if anybody here did that and just bought a T-Mobile model and runs it on AT&T?
any other advice?
I bought the t-mobile s4. I run it on AT&T and have had no real problems. The one thing that I have noticed, running a few custom roms, is that LTE drops in and out.
I've also noticed some weird behavior regarding talk and data. If I take a phone call, data ceases to work for a few seconds. I'm pretty sure this is an apn setting or a rom issue. Nothing to do with the network I'm running on or anything like that.
Sent from the depths of the ether.
How much did it set you back the tmobile branded one? Can you just walk into a tmobile store and buy one outright?

That or just run a AT&T Rom. I am under the impression they are the same device, once you confirm that I would recommend just running an AT&T rom to avoid issues. If I am wrong please someone let me know. It would have to be the non Loki version.
Their may be some international roms you can flash as well
Please double check this information before flashing, even though they seem to have almost everything in common they may differ in minor ways (radios and so on) I do not have a S4 to test and have not read around.

time to do some more reading but i am pretty sure that i will go for the t-mobile one (can you tell that i really really don't want to give AT&T any money?).
edit: looks like you are right and most roms will work on the t-mobile device, you just need the correct kernel.

trust me, if it was up to me, i would have kicked AT&T a LONG time ago since i really do hate this company and how they treat their customers. however, since i don't actually pay the bill (my company pays for my phone and it is their account), i don't have any other option.

Honestly I do not mind AT&T at this point. Yes, locking down phones and cheating people out of money bugs the crap out of me... but they have been really good to me.
In the last couple of months they have:
1. Let me upgrade to the HTC One for $200 without charging one of my upgrade and waived the activation fee
2. Gave me the option of canceling all my lines early or take credits for my trouble
3. Gave me about $300+ in credits
4. Told me that I can upgrade early on my line that isn't available for an upgrade until May of 2014 (just as long as it is not an iPhone)... I'm going to save it for the next big thing.
How can I complain?

Yeah I got really lucky. Talked to all the right people and they were great. I find that you have to push a little and they will help, don't accept the first thing you hear. Everyone at AT&T will give you a different answer so it can be hard. I also noticed that a lot of them have different policies and things they can do. They have no idea what the other call centers are saying.

I have run AT&T as well as T-Mobile ROMs. I believe you need to (I have been doing so, after getting a black screen) run a T-mobile kernel though. None of the custom roms I have flashed have radios or modems in them. Generally, custom roms don't include them, because well terrible if you flash the wrong thing.
