it would be awesome to start a thread with all the information in one place someone would need to maximize the phones potential without rooting it or wrecking the warrenty. i know i will end up rooting my phone but not right away. so im looking to maximize it without doing anything too crazy. so what should i know and what free programs should i get to do this.

Droiddog and places like that have recommended apps and such if you want to stay stock. XDA is a place for modding. Its great that you're learning and on your way.
Remember, that you can always go back to stock for warranty issues with oden. Once you flash, you never go back.

When searching for captivate stuff, I found most information (even not related to rooting) on this forum.
For my stock captivate I got:
Advanced Task Killer - the free ad based one. I have not tried the auto kill levels since I am scared that my phone will turn off randomly when I want to receive a call.
Launcher Pro - the free one (so i can customize the 4 buttons at the bottom of the home screen)
Home Switcher - so i can switch to touch wiz launcher if I want to use the Kies mini app
Google Map - I heard the one that came on the phone wasn't as good as the one in the app store.
I removed all the AT&T Apps from the home screens.
For music I got double twist to sync music with my iTunes.
I tried the AT&T video/music players and PowerAMP and DoubleTwist and something else but none are really that good - They seem to forget which podcasts I already watched/listened to and are not really good at resuming. This is probably because they think podcasts are songs.
I got Pod Manager to download podcasts - worst UI in the world but gets the job done. I am still almost thinking of using itunes and just syncing with double twist every morning.
The battery isn't the greatest on this thing. Not sure what techniques I can use to make it better. I set my background to black but not really sure if that will help. Also I used the "Power widget" to dim my screen a bit. I really wish I could use the "auto" setting on the light but still tell it to be darker in general. To offset the power even more I bought a couple micro usb cables. 1 for computer, 1 for car, 1 for work computer, and power adapter from box for next to bed. However I had to cut down some of the plastic off the ends of the cable to make it fit. I do generally make it all day with just the nightly charge even when I watch a podcast on the way to work and home from work (about 1 hour each way) on the bus but I like having the cables just in case.
The Kies app and mini app seems to suck - I can't get either of them to work on win 7 x64 even with .net 4.0. On windows 7 x86 the mini version used (without .net 4.0) to work but not anymore since the latest kies mini update.
Other than that I just got a bunch of games and apps. Although it probably based on personal preference.

If you want awesome battery life un-install all that crud( launcher Pro, ATK, fancy music player) use any wallpaper you want and toggle your background data and wifi notifications my cappy gets 12 hours easy.

Oh sorry I was considering 12 hours (10 hours of sitting in pocket use + some phone calls + 2 hours of video playing) poor battery life.
I picked the black background because I heard the "Live Backgrounds" were a battery drain and I like the black color (its my PC's background color as well).
Auto Task Killer is not needed...does more harm than good IMO.
Also your black background is the best for Super AMOLED (all OLED-based) displays because when a pixel is black it is essentially using no energy.
-Battery life gets better with about 2 weeks of use
-I uninstalled all task killers. This thing multitasks on its own fine
-I figure a full day without plugging into a charger is excellent on any smartphone device.
-However, I bought the samsung external charger and battery on amazon, so I now seldom plug my phone in. I just swap batteries in the evening and charge the battery thats been in the phone all day
My captivate is 1 week old. The battery the first few days was not very good but now it seems to last longer.
This is what I have done:
1- Brightness set the lowest (Phone + Browser) I can see the screen just fine.
2- Black background, but with style so it doesn't look plain
3- All apps. sync manually and background data off. I turn it on when I need it but I am most of the time on wifi.
4- GPS off, I don't need it or use it
As of right now, with moderate use, I am on my 2nd day without charging and I'm pretty sure I will get a 3rd day without charging.
Apps that I can recommend:Fancy Widget,SamServmode, Barcode Scanner, 3G Watchdog
My post about droiddog was about the app reviews and such they do. Basically all unrooted android phones are the same, just different hardware. That's why general android sites are best for unrooted phones. Samsung support forums would be a good place. General public troubleshooting each other. Get where I'm going with this?

oh why didnt you say that If I were you I would buy an ipod touch for video playing and your battery in your phone will last for 20 hours.
I resisted rooting for the longest time, thinking I'd wait till Froyo.
I finally got tired of waiting and did the one click root + lagfix. Didn't try anything else yet but let me tell you, just doing that small amount has made my Captivate experience so much happier

Don't use OCLF. Use z4root, it works with 2.2
As I'm sure many of you know, HDMI mirroring on the Infinity works well, but having two screens on while watching a video or playing a game is distracting.
Screen Standby is a new root app that disables the backlight on your tablet or phone while still allowing touchscreen functionality to remain active. That means while your tablet may look off when outputting to HDMI, you can still use it to pause, change apps, and do whatever you want while saving battery life at the same time. To turn your display back on simply shake the device. Unfortunately the proximity sensor function isn't working at the moment, at least on CM10.
I'm surprised it's taken this long for an app such as this to come along, but I can confirm it works on our infinity and on CM10 as well.

And I would suggest you turn on two-stage screen off as that allows you to switch to whatever app you want to run before you go dark. Hope this helps!

I have the i5 256Gb model. I love it as it's exactly what I was after, large screen running windows so I could easily run lightroom and photoshop. I've had ipads for years and it takes a bit of getting used to. The screen is a little large for general tablet use and of course its a full on PC so can get v.hot and the fan can get full on loud at times. I also gets a lot more respect and thought when getting thrown in a bag, and there are places I would use the ipad without thinking where I would be more worried about the surface getting damaged. I has almost won w8 over for me as well though it's still far from perfect

It is terrific....you definitely should get it. I have been using it for a while now and it is just fantastic.
The tablet is so light (for a full core i7 PC, 800 grams for tablet alone) and typing on the type cover is terrific as the keys are quite broad. The 3:2 form factor actually makes the tablet very usable compared to the longish 16:9 in many laptop and tablets. Kudos for Microsoft for daring to be different. The ability to do work in a Portrait orientation makes me so ultra productive as I can see my entire page all at once (very important to me). There are so many pluses in Portrait orientation, I can read an entire webpage at one go without having to zoom in. However, there is a caveat. When in portrait orientation, you have to unplug the type cover and essentially the type cover is useless when it is not plugged into the SP3. So you have to get an external (preferably bluetooth) keyboard for that. It sucks that it has only 1 USB port and despite what I have read online, the battery life was so-so for me....around 5 hours plus. Maybe its because I am using the core i7/512GB version. I would have gladly accepted another 100g of weight on the product in exchange for slightly longer battery life.
I think the sweet spot for this product in terms of price/performance/battery-life is really the core i5/256GB version. Occasionally it does get pretty hot at the back.....I am not sure if it is because of the core i7. Also, I used to own a Lenovo Yoga 2 pro...and although I like that laptop, however, 2 negatives for me...the yellow colors are more like mustard and there is no way to overcome it and Lenovo is pretty much ignoring the issue....and the standard SD card slot has 80% of the SD card sticking out of the slot. The screen and colors on the SP3 are very accurate and the 2K (2156x1440) resolution is sharp and bright. And Microsoft hid a micro-SD card slot behind the tablet hidden by the kick-stand and its terrific. However, the micro-SD card tends to go to sleep very often and the only way to wake it is to pull it out of the slot and push it back in. I have found no way to get the micro-SD card to stop going to sleep. The accuracy of the PEN when taking notes is very very good compared to many tablets that I have tried before and its smart integration to One Note (free) and One Note 2013 (free also I think) is fantastic.
So I've been using the SP3 for about a month and recently took it for travelling. At the hotel, i connected the SP3 to my Jambox speakers and it was great except that the music would turn off when the screen turns off. The only way to keep the music playing is to extend the sleep time on the SP3 which also means the screen is kept on. Not the most ideal case compared to using a notebook.
Is there a work around for this? Or maybe a setting i may have missed.
Sleep bug-----Hibernate Alternative
i had the surface 2 pro for 1 year and absolutely loved it, but i kept running into an issue that when it was in its sleep mode it somehow would wake itself up in its case and stay on running. Later for me to find a superheated surface with significant battery drain. The only fix i could find is to make it hybernate, it uses 8 gigs of harddrive space for the ram, but thats the only drawback, it starts about the same speed. So i recently bought the pro 3 for the sole purpose of the larger screen, that was my only complaint from my pro2. i then found out that the surface 3 seems to have the same issue as i had with the pro 2. But the pro 3 didnt have hibernation available when i searched for its, i asked the staff at my closest microsoft store and they said it looks like they phased it out. But after a ton of searching and digging i found a way to enable hibernate.
i tried enabling by cmd line like normal " powercfg -h on" didnt give me an error but nothing showed up.
Remember that you need enough hard drive space as hibernate takes your ram and dumps it to your harddrive. space used on hard drive=ram size
This replaces your sleep option with hibernate
1) hit start
2) search add or remove programs or Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features
3) left side will have "Turn Windows features on or off"
4) select the main Hyper-V
5) hit ok
6) wait for it to find and install files
7) restart computer
9) should now show up under power button options
should you want to remove the hibernate and restore sleep option, simply go back in and uncheck the Hyper-V-you need to set your power button preferences again back to sleep

sounds like its just going to sleep, if that's the case
extend the sleep time like you did but adjust the screen turn off to be shorter
1) Control Panel
2)All Control Panel Items
3)Power Options
4)Edit Plan Settings
Turning Hyper-V on or off as a way to control sleep-vs-hibernate is kind of silly; if you want to enable hibernate (and it's not already enabled) you can do that with a single line (in an Admin command prompt): "powercfg -H ON"
The behavior of the computer with regard to when it enters sleep and/or hibernate is controlled from the Power Options -> Edit Plan Settings, as you already gave steps to reach (though it's faster to just right-click the system tray battery icon and select "Power Options" than to go through the Control Panel).

Thanks for the reply. That's what i've been doing with all my other notebooks and computer but on the SP3, when i change the "Turn off display after" settings, it changes the sleep timing to match it.
Hence i'm guessing i'm missing a hidden step. Attached pix for better understanding.

turns out i disabled sleep mode and replaced it with hibernate, it gives me turn display of after __ min not the sleep like yours
the sleep issue i keep running into is it wakes itself up in the case and stays on. ill try to revert back and look into it

if you read my post i ran that command to begin with since it was the simplest solution, but it doesnt work.

Thanks but i'll rather let it sleep cos waking up is much faster compared to hibernate IMO. Mine does not wake itself so i have no issues there. Just can't get the screen to turn off without letting the device sleep.

I just got my self a Surface Pro 3 with 256gb i5 8GB and manage to install fresh windows 10 on it but I Can't get it to proper activate i will rather have it recover to default using the recovery image and then upgrade to windows 10..
Please help me with the recovery Image for SP3 pro US.
I have just received my SP3 i7 a few weeks ago and I'm loving it so far. Not to mention some issues, for example over heating and noisy fan.
However, I would love to listen to music or download some torrent files while the screen turn off in order to save some juice. Unfortunately, I could not do that because SP3 tend to stay in sleep mode when the screen turn off.
I remember that I found some information in this forum about the software that help SP3 stays awake while the screen turn off but I could not find it now...
I also tried to use second screen only to prevent SP3 to go to sleep but SP3 screen just popped up and mentioned that they could not stream to the second screen after a couple minute. Thus, this way is not work for me.
Anyone know how to solve this problem? I would appreciated all the answer I could get.

You have two choice. First is to use metro mode app to play. It can run with connected standby. The other choice is to use Always-on mode.

By metro mode app, I mean Music app (for W8.1) or Groove Music (for W10). It come with Windows so you don't have to download it.

Using Surface in Background.
You can use Surface Pro 3 in Tablet Mode to listen to music while the screen is off.
You can change the time limit got surface to go sleeping in the Battery Menu under Advanced Options to keep downloading torrents in background.

Hi folks, I recently ran into a couple of problems with my new Style. At home I have aeroplane mode on, location off, even the sim card removed, yet phone idle is still using battery. Not a great chunk, maybe 3-4%, but it shouldn't be doing that right?! Mobile data etc is all off.
The second issue is that when casting to my Samsung TV the picture is totally off, it's as if the refresh rate isn't right and there's screen tearing all over. Even on a static image there's movement as the pixels update. The TV info tells me that the phone is casting at 720p 30hz. I would normally just use MHL/Slimport instead but this phone doesn't support it.
I've not run into either of these problems with my Nexus 5 or 10 and I've Googled til my thumbs ache, but I can't find a solution or even mention of these specific problems. Can any of you fine folks here help me out?
