for those that dont want to root - Captivate General

it would be awesome to start a thread with all the information in one place someone would need to maximize the phones potential without rooting it or wrecking the warrenty. i know i will end up rooting my phone but not right away. so im looking to maximize it without doing anything too crazy. so what should i know and what free programs should i get to do this.
thanks so much

Droiddog and places like that have recommended apps and such if you want to stay stock. XDA is a place for modding. Its great that you're learning and on your way.
Remember, that you can always go back to stock for warranty issues with oden. Once you flash, you never go back.

Note: Droiddog only has 1 post in the samsung captivate/epic/fascinate/vibrant forum http://www.droiddog.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=87
When searching for captivate stuff, I found most information (even not related to rooting) on this forum.
For my stock captivate I got:
Advanced Task Killer - the free ad based one. I have not tried the auto kill levels since I am scared that my phone will turn off randomly when I want to receive a call.
Launcher Pro - the free one (so i can customize the 4 buttons at the bottom of the home screen)
Home Switcher - so i can switch to touch wiz launcher if I want to use the Kies mini app
Google Map - I heard the one that came on the phone wasn't as good as the one in the app store.
I removed all the AT&T Apps from the home screens.
For music I got double twist to sync music with my iTunes.
I tried the AT&T video/music players and PowerAMP and DoubleTwist and something else but none are really that good - They seem to forget which podcasts I already watched/listened to and are not really good at resuming. This is probably because they think podcasts are songs.
I got Pod Manager to download podcasts - worst UI in the world but gets the job done. I am still almost thinking of using itunes and just syncing with double twist every morning.
The battery isn't the greatest on this thing. Not sure what techniques I can use to make it better. I set my background to black but not really sure if that will help. Also I used the "Power widget" to dim my screen a bit. I really wish I could use the "auto" setting on the light but still tell it to be darker in general. To offset the power even more I bought a couple micro usb cables. 1 for computer, 1 for car, 1 for work computer, and power adapter from box for next to bed. However I had to cut down some of the plastic off the ends of the cable to make it fit. I do generally make it all day with just the nightly charge even when I watch a podcast on the way to work and home from work (about 1 hour each way) on the bus but I like having the cables just in case.
The Kies app and mini app seems to suck - I can't get either of them to work on win 7 x64 even with .net 4.0. On windows 7 x86 the mini version used (without .net 4.0) to work but not anymore since the latest kies mini update.
Other than that I just got a bunch of games and apps. Although it probably based on personal preference.
Hope that starts you off in your quest.

If you want awesome battery life un-install all that crud( launcher Pro, ATK, fancy music player) use any wallpaper you want and toggle your background data and wifi notifications my cappy gets 12 hours easy.

Oh sorry I was considering 12 hours (10 hours of sitting in pocket use + some phone calls + 2 hours of video playing) poor battery life.
I picked the black background because I heard the "Live Backgrounds" were a battery drain and I like the black color (its my PC's background color as well).

Auto Task Killer is not needed...does more harm than good IMO.
Also your black background is the best for Super AMOLED (all OLED-based) displays because when a pixel is black it is essentially using no energy.

-Battery life gets better with about 2 weeks of use
-I uninstalled all task killers. This thing multitasks on its own fine
-I figure a full day without plugging into a charger is excellent on any smartphone device.
-However, I bought the samsung external charger and battery on amazon, so I now seldom plug my phone in. I just swap batteries in the evening and charge the battery thats been in the phone all day

My captivate is 1 week old. The battery the first few days was not very good but now it seems to last longer.
This is what I have done:
1- Brightness set the lowest (Phone + Browser) I can see the screen just fine.
2- Black background, but with style so it doesn't look plain
3- All apps. sync manually and background data off. I turn it on when I need it but I am most of the time on wifi.
4- GPS off, I don't need it or use it
As of right now, with moderate use, I am on my 2nd day without charging and I'm pretty sure I will get a 3rd day without charging.
Apps that I can recommend:Fancy Widget,SamServmode, Barcode Scanner, 3G Watchdog

My post about droiddog was about the app reviews and such they do. Basically all unrooted android phones are the same, just different hardware. That's why general android sites are best for unrooted phones. Samsung support forums would be a good place. General public troubleshooting each other. Get where I'm going with this?

oh why didnt you say that If I were you I would buy an ipod touch for video playing and your battery in your phone will last for 20 hours.

I resisted rooting for the longest time, thinking I'd wait till Froyo.
I finally got tired of waiting and did the one click root + lagfix. Didn't try anything else yet but let me tell you, just doing that small amount has made my Captivate experience so much happier

Do you have the link to the oclf you used? I'm just afraid of bricking it. I need to root first then I can use the oclf? Our does the oclf do it all?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I896 using XDA App

with my usage, my phone lasts me 8 hours, if im lucky. sometimes i go to class at 12 get home by 3 and im at about 60% lol..

Don't use OCLF. Use z4root, it works with 2.2

Windows Phone 7 launcher

Like the title says.
Just wanted to share
If you guys ever wanted to try out windows phone 7 without losing android you should try a launcher called Launcher 7 it is in the android market. There are 2 versions. One has ads and the other without (seems like the only difference) only had one ad so far at the bottom of the screen and it went away right when I changed from the app list to the tiles.
All in all it is pretty quick I haven't had any lag while using it so far. You can also change the tile colors and add your own icons for each app you mame a tile for. Not that many premade icons though... at least in the free version... so it will just put the default icon on the tile or you can make your own.
So if anyone wants to try it out its called launcher 7 and you can find it in the market.
Sent from my G2X
I used this launcher for about 5 days. I loved the customization aspect of it, and the way that you could modify the colors for individual tiles, and add various widgets to it. But, that's where I started having problems. It took me a couple of days to have time to sit and get around to customizing it. Once I started adding widgets to it (the same widgets that I used on my default home screen with no problems/lags, etc.), the launcher started to lag. The day before I installed it, my battery completely died on me twice in one day. My normal battery usage (with the same setup, just using the default home screen) is anywhere from 18 - 30 hours, just depending on how much gaming I do on the phone (gaming drains my battery more than anything else). I uninstalled Launcher7 just to see if it actually was the cause of my battery drain, and the phone went back to my normal usage pattern.
As much as I really liked this launcher, it still needs more work. I'm going to stick with the default launcher for now as performance does not suffer considering my home screen customizations. But, if the developer is able to get this working better, I'd go back to using it (and I actually had the paid version). Good luck!
I check it out, Thanks.
I check it out, Thanks.

Guide to Maximizing Battery Life w/o Disabling Half Your Phones Features

*Disclaimer* This is all from a personal experience and testing/research from a long time android user, what I have discovered over time and has helped me and some friends. This will work whether your rooted OR not. I kept it as basic as I can so everyone can benefit. If you dont like what you read and disagree, or want to add something PM me, Ill change/add and give credit to you. Hopefully, this can grow with the community.
*Rooted Section Will be Added*
*When I charge my battery I usually drain it all the way down or as much as i can (around 20% left) then charge plugged in till green, then power down and charge for another hour or so. Not sure if this matters or not but seems to help me out try it!*
This guide will help you if your rooted or non-rooted, all the apps I talk about I honestly have no ties to the devs. I don't use any SUPER AWESOME AMAZING BATTERY SAVER 5000 apps or anything like that. Those mostly just turn ur radios off and on and kill apps in the background. In my experience a lot of them cause syncing issues with my e-mail and other notifications. I like to receive my information instantly not have an app waiting for me to turn my screen on to check for updates.
About my personal setup: Basically, I want my phone to last me all day but still perform well with a heavy use, WITHOUT needing to constantly change settings to save battery. With what I have here Im able to keep my Sensation running for a full day of moderate-heavy use (7:30am to around 10pm) with its STOCK battery (Did damn well on my Evo 4G too). Days of very minor use Ive gone into the second day with 60% + battery. Yes, I use all my home screens and have a good amount of widgets, I love sense and its widgets. I play games, surf the web, do a lot of texting, listen to a lot of music, decent amount of fbing and email, usually take a few pictures a day. Half my day is wifi/other is mobile data.
Here goes the real basics, mostly common sense here not trying to insult anyone. Feel free to browse thru it quick (green text) if your not totally new to the android scene, whats after it will be a good read for noobs and vets.
*I use the power control widget, make getting to a lot of settings quicker. Why waste battery digging thru menus?*
Basics:
-Screen brightness: (duh ) these pretty screens eat battery brighter=quicker drain naturally and from my experience leaving it on Auto Brightness kills more battery too. Each time your phone pulls information from the sensor to decide on how bright it should adjust itself too.
-GPS: If GPS is on it should not effect battery unless an app is using it and you see the GPS icon on your notification bar. I noticed a very slight increase in mA discharge when i had it enabled, to be safe leave it off if you dont use it extremely frequently.
Location thru mobile networks: Not to hard on battery. I leave mine on it does add drain but it takes away from my weather widgets updating when Im traveling.
-Bluetooth: Moderate battery drain. I honestly don't use it at all myself but if you do try your best to keep it off when not in use.
-Wifi: Android has gotten a lot better at managing wifi over the past few years. It doesn't drain that bad on battery and it shuts off/on periodically on its own when screen is off depending on whats using it.
Google Back-Up: Takes a little juice here and there no biggie. I dont use it just because I like to fresh install my apps when I try a new rom, run into less problems that way.
2G/3G/4G: This varies phone to phone, the slower speed the better battery life. If you know your not going to be using 4G for a while turn it off. I leave mine on 4G or wifi all day with my sensation. When I had Sprint and my Evo I would leave it off most of the time. Depending on your carrier and how their data works this is a big one. T-Mobile seems to handle well, Sprint and Verizon's 4G Ive seen eat an insane amount of battery.
Sync/Background Data: I lumped them together because sync is pretty much reliant on background data. These kill a lot of your battery in general. It syncs your apps (email, facebook, google data, contacts, etc.), the periodic checks your apps do to check for and download new emails and notifications, using background data (data still transmits when screens off). I always leave these on and still manage great battery life, I like things instant if I wanted to wait Id just wait till i got in front of a PC. Sync and Background data are the settings most battery saving apps control because they really can help your battery if you turn it off. You can control what core apps sync in settings>accounts and sync. Or the power widget that 95% of android phones have has it on there. I recommend minimizing the amount of apps you allow background data with, example: WeatherBug first launch it asks if it can automatically update itself in the background for apps were thats not necessary hit no.
Radio/Airplane Mode: Pretty self explanatory, turns off your connection to your wireless provider. No point in ever turning it off in my eyes, your phones no longer a phone.
What has really helped me with my battery life (non-basics):
There is a lot to be said when it comes down to 2.2+ android phones and whether they need a task killer anymore or not. Since Ive had a lot of android phones and a few now that are 2.2+ Ive done a lot of testing. I usually go about a 2 weeks on one idea or new task killer and keep a close eye on battery drainage using Battery Monitor Widget, free app in the market. It tells you exactly how much of your battery is being drained without killing battery itself. Each phone/rom settles at a different average mA lower the better. In my experience if I can keep my phone anywhere under 100mA when idle im doing good. This held true on both the Evo 4G and my Sensation. Some ASOP roms i could get down to the 30's but for sense under 100mA is good. Keep in mind you will get the occasionally spike here and there its just android and/or apps in the background. You can view the a chart of the battery data in Battery Monitor.
Instead of boring you guys with each task killer Ive used and its results, Ill just get down to what I found out in the end.
Basically, the way android 2.2+ works it really isn't necessary to run a task killer it does a decent job removing apps from memory when you need more memory. But at the same time I found running a task killer periodically (BUT not killing frequently used apps) results in a lower average mA drain leading to overall better battery life.
The best application I have used has to go Automatic Task Killer , trust me Ive used a lot from the top free ones to a few of the more popular paid ones. What this task killer does is kill a selection of apps you allow it too every time your phones screen shuts off and goes idle. On Automatic Task Killer's first boot your shown a screen of every application that could at some point run in the background on your phone. This part sucks a little bit but it is worth it, you need to select which of the apps you want to allow it to kill automatically. It does not kill foreground apps the ones you currently have open on the screen aka a browser or a game. Example your playing NFS: Shift and your boss walks by so you quickly pause and hit the power button turning off the screen, next time you turn the screen on it will kill all other allowed background apps but your game will still be up front and center.
Now the trick is to go thru and set it to kill apps you know your phone won't automatically just restart or you don't use 90% of the time. So don't select things like Dialer, Contacts, Clock, Calendar, Messages or apps you constantly use/check such as a third party SMS app or your main E-Mail Client or third party keyboards (various by person and what you use most). Letting the app automatically kill those is just going to lead to worse battery life because your phone will just restart it each time leading to more CPU cycles (not what you want and part of the reason some consider task killers bad things).
Also, when using any task killer and killing the proper apps sense runs smoother, a big deal with sense 3.0.
So hopefully with a little messing around you can get a good setup where your phone lasts you all day without having to constantly keep changing settings and watching your battery life. All while everything stays syncing and instant. Hope this helps!
*ROOT Section (now that we have s-off )
Everything posted above can be done on any rom, rooted or none. There has been a lot of posts on "freezing apps" that you dont need or typically use, which does in fact really help battery life. Since, we (by we i mean sensation users) now have a permanent root this is my tiny second part of the guide for rooted devices.
I dont freeze my apps I prefer them to be gone for good if its something I dont see myself using or its bloat that came with my phone/rom. Since 98% of us will be using custom roms now this usually isnt an issue since most dev's r good at what they do and remove all the bs we dont need or normally use. Still there is some apps we may not want on our phones so for that I use SystemApp Remover . Its a great App for people who dont want to have to worry about going in manually and getting rid of system apps.
Its just basically an Uninstaller that allows you to access any and every app on the phone for you to uninstall (thats y roots needed). For me I just go in an drop the apps I know i wont use. A lot of roms come with carrier add-ons and such, those I normally delete as well as a few HTC sense widgets and apps I see no need for. It will free up space and increase your phones battery life with most things you delete.
Now, be careful. You are prompted upon opening SystemApp Remover that messing in system apps is dangerous and it is. If your not sure what something is DONT touch it, simply do a google search or ask around to see if its safe to remove first.
Re-calibrate Battery: After you flash a new rom or start using a new battery, you should use your recovery (CWM or other) to Wipe Battery Stats. Before you do this make sure your battery is at 100% and has been on the charger for over an hour with the fully charged green led on. This will allow your device to better drain your battery and can really help battery life.
So hopefully with a little messing around you can get a good setup where your phone lasts you all day without having to constantly keep changing settings and watching your battery life. All while everything stays syncing and instant. Hope this helps!

Hmm, ill try auto task killer as well, tried a few others.
I use JuiceDefender, I like it. It manages my connectivity pretty well and it does help.
This is excellent, many thanks. As a converted WM 6.5 user I have to say, I am enjoying android considerably more and I prefer it to the Metro interface of WP7. It's nice to know the little tricks to get the most out of it. Thanks again. ^_^

Thanks for the info, and for sharing, i will try the different methods
i havent really bothered with task killers but ive found reducing the brightness and disabling data and sync makes my battery last alot longer. i just re enable when i need them.
also, i downloaded setcpu and added a profile for while the screen is off. that helps alot. the drain is about 5% with the screen off after every 3 or 4 hours.
Very good info thanks
You had me impressed until you mentioned task killers. Absolutely horrible...

Full version is much better.
It's killer app indeed. I think many of it's features should be natively included in android.
Options like "Turn off 3G/EDGE when connected to Wi-Fi", "Turn off all radios when screen is off", "Turn off Wi-Fi after x minutes if it doesn't connect to a network", "Set screen brightess to minimal when battery is low", etc....it wouldn't be that hard to implement and battery life, perhaps most criticized aspect of Android, would improve immensely.

Your mobile network DOES turn off when connected to wifi, and if all radios turned off when the screen went off, how would you ever get calls or emails with the phone in your pocket? The wifi after x minutes would be a nice feature, but I don't like things touching my screen brightness.
Thank you for your information.

Green Power vs JuiceDefender

Hello everyone!
I was just wondering between these two apps...
Which one works better for you and if will be great if you can share your configuration!!
Also, does anyone knows is any of these two disable whatsapp and gmail notifications?
Many thanks for sharing!
Cheers!
IMHO
I can answer about Green Power Premium:
It doesn't have such option like disable notifications. He does such thing like disables data connection for amount of time you chose (for me it is 15min) and then enables data connection for amount of time you choose (for me it is 2min)
Now my Galaxy Note works 2 times longer (from 10h to 20h)

WOW! double time!!
thanks for sharing!
I have been trying both, and while both of them seem to deliver a noticeable reduction in power draw (actually in my case a dramatic reduction), of the two I'd have to give my vote to GreenPower (I'm using the full version). The power reduction is at least as good as Juice Defender Ultimate, and the premium version is significantly cheaper.
Both work by turning various features (mainly Wi-fi/3g/BlueTooth) on and off automatically, but as result can cause delays in things like receiving push-mail and that kind of thing. With Juice-Defender I found this to be quite noticeable, but I'd have to say that with Green-Power I haven't really noticed it slowing down messaging or anything else.......
I've used them both - and deleted them both. I'd rather manage power myself.
i am using 2x Battery for me this is the best. simple and clean.
I usually use JuiceDefender but decided to try out Green Power. I really like it but I have a hard time getting my phone to sleep properly on GP.
i use widgetsoid and just enable my connection when i want it (wifi/3g)
i could never find the proper app that did exactly what i wanted- rather just have control.
going that was and using the phone an average amount my battery goes from 100 -> 75 from the time i wake up (7am) to the time i got to bed (12-1 am)
the 2500mah battery is pretty good!
With JuiceDefender I can get my phone to sleep 95%+ of the time but with GreenPower, my cpu is only sleep 40%+. Can anyone give me tips to get my cpu to sleep more to preserve battery?

Just out of interest, what happens when you browse the web and GreenPower has turned off the Data Connection?
Or you're watching a youtube video and it decides its time to turn off data?
Tried both versions and found green power premium to work better for me. (Price was a good point too.)
However the next day I found that if I left my phone for a while (Around 1 1/2 to 2 hours), the display would not turn on and If I called the phone it would not ring. Only way to fix this was to press the power button for 10 seconds to reset the phone.
Uninstalled green power to see if this was the cause and hasn't happened since.
Was wondering if something similar has happened to other people?
I had to go back to JuiceDefender since I couldn't get my phone to go into deep sleep with GreenPower.
Hi, i went for Green Power. I found it simpler to configure, more focused on the job. Juice Defender has to much possible settings and complexity, this makes it a great tool but might also lead to poor efficiency.
I have never used green power before but im on juice defender. I have experienced auto turn off by the note due to a set cpu settings that govern lower clock to cpu at a certain condition. Due to the big display on note i think lower cpu clock wont do it. Because of that the device turned off itself. Upon failure to operate. Hope this solves your problem
I have tried JuiceDefender but ultimately prefer to do everything manually. Some how I always feel the auto manage apps will have everything off precisely when you need it. I use the SwitchPro widget to quickly enable/disable the various radios from my home screen and it works great.
@ Aldragor
I have/had the same problem. In the beginning I thought that my launcher would be the cause for this problem, but after I disabled my Green Power Premium it hasn't happend since now.
Juice defender ultimate, the feature of switching 2g 3g on stock ROM alone was worth the price!
After figuring out how to config GreenPower properly, I went back to it.
I used JuiceDefender and thought it was great.... when it worked. However, I used it mostly as a scheduler with about 15% battery saving which I took as the icing on the cake.
I want all connections on during the day (peak) so I can take skype calls, etc.. When I'm home, I just want to periodically check for mails, etc (so have connection enable every 15min) and when I go to bed I don't want to be disturbed by emails, messages, etc but still want phone/sms on in case there is an emergency. And most of all, I didn't want to have to manually do that every day.
Problem was that it never really stuck to the schedules. This was the ultimate version but it was a crack as they never offered the ultimate on a trial. I wanted to evaluate the ultimate and buy if it did the job. So, it might have been a bad crack which caused the problem, but I guess I'll never know as I don't want to risk wasting the money if the schedule problem persists.

traveler's kernel/rom or app

I use my tf for navigation. i hook it to my car's audio too and it's so nice to be able to listen to my music and have it auto adjust the volume when the navigation app says directions.
but i only get 5 hours of battery life with the screen on dim and the gps on(plus music). of course i can get the battery to last 10+ hours if i turn the screen off during long stretches of road. But i'd like to see how much battery life we could squeeze out of the device by killing unnecessary processes, underclocking/undervolting(it seems fine at 500mhz), and maybe some kernel level adjustments could be made.
i'd gladly flash to a "light" kernel like this before going on a trip and then flash back once i arrive. it takes 5 minutes.
maybe some android dev will have interest in this. or maybe there's not much more we can do about the battery besides underclock/undervolt existing kernels. anyone know the answer?
I'm assuming you're already rooted with recovery. There's an interesting app in the app section called SwitchMe root profile manager. What it does is make separate installs of android on your tab. What you could do with this is make a 'superlite' installation, with almost no apps to run in the background in the first place (just GPS and music, basically) put your favorite Guevor kernel on it, and underclock/volt as far as you can without losing functionality. Maybe give this approach a shot, or invest in a nazi task manager with only your gps and music as favorites.

[Q] iOS to KitKat. huge difference. first week report.

This is my first android phone ever, so please forgive my ignorance i have been using nexus 5 for the last 1 week and I have few questions
1. Security : any applications that are install asks me permission how to access almost all of my data, contacts, phone location, phone status wireless, this is making me nervous
2. Virus protection : i had completely forgotten about having an antivirus on my iphone because there was no need. I would like to know which is the best antivirus and firewall for my nexus 5 i don't care if i have to pay for the software. I just want to be sure that's my banking transactions and bill payments are secure.
3. Battery : oh my god!!! Takes very very long time to charge and very very short time discharge. I wonder what is eating my battery. Even after 4 - 5 hours of charging it does not fully charge. Same when it is connected to my laptop and same when it is connected to my car charger. This is really annoying me. Am i doing something wrong here.
4. OK Google : ok google works only at the home screen is this how it is supposed to be. Ok google freezes or does not respond when there is no Internet. Is it possible to call out the name of the caller while the phone is ringing
5. Lock screen: is it possible to see the preview of messages and e-mails notifications on the lock screen just like i phone is there any application that can help me with this. I do not want how to unlock my phone every time to read a notification
Lol mine is charging so fast. It needs an hour to finish the charging.

shows that banking apps are incredibly insecure on iOS, and on Android they are the same. neither is 'secure' when it comes to banking and bill payments

you should do a factory wipe and let the device reset itself. max charge time from 0% to 100% is 2 and a half hours with the stock charger and cable
it's probably discharging so fast because of things like 'wifi always on' and 'always scan wifi' and 'high accuracy' location mode. if you want optimal battery life you should go through all the settings and pick stuff out. auto brightness is notorious for being a battery hog. especially on the N5 since it makes it too bright.
If you're only installing apps from Google Play, there's no need at all for antivirus software on your phone. The malware "problem" on Android is massively overblown. Don't believe the hype.
If your battery is taking that long to charge, something is not right. My phone fully charges in about 2 hours and I can easily get 4-5 hours of screen on time per charge. Try a factory reset, and if that doesn't work, you may need to RMA.
the answer to #5 is to download a widget called dashclock. search the play store for it. it was developed by a google employee. it has tons and tons of extensions which give you "at a glance" information on your lockscreen. you can see anything from detailed battery stats, to sms/mms, e-mails, missed calls, weather, the list goes on and on.
Use the original wall charger. Fast charging needs a charger rated at 1.8 amps iirc. Laptop USB only provides approx 0.5 amp so it will only show charge. Same with many car chargers. Make sure you use a car charger rated for 2.0 amps.

1. Don't you want to know?
2. No.
3. Use the cord that came with the phone. Check your battery usage graph.
4. Some functions require internet. There's an app for that.
5. There's an app for that.
This is my first Android phone too. Google searches have made figuring this stuff out easy.

The N5 can't charge above 1.2 amps with the stock kernel. If you use a 2 amp charger, the phone will still charge at 1.2.
Welcome to Andorid, having made the switch myself early last year, I had similar concerns too. You have however come to the right place to ask help
1. App Ops (search on XDA) if you dont know about it (need to be rooted) or you could use xprivacy Xposed module to disable some permissions.
2. Not required (install from trusted source only) and you are golden.
3. Greenify (root required for some functions) should help. However what you are stating is an abnormal behavior. Go into setting and look at the battery graph and the usage per app/sys
4. I dont use this feature, so no comment
5. Dynamic notifications app is great, or if you use light flow it will wake the screen up for notification or as someone mentioned above dashclock.
1. iOS would require all the same permissions as android... no need to worry.
2. same as 1, no difference really compared to iOS. Most risks would be the same, you'll be fine as long as you don't pirate apps etc.
3. I don't experience this, if you use the supplied charger and usb it'll be fine. Android devices generally charge slower when just using a usb to a computer etc.

I think nexus 5 so good ,that reason why i am in here , xda forums !!! hehe

4. OK Google only works from the home screen on 4.4.x or you can get a third party app that offers the same function from anywhere but say good by to battery life most likely

1. iOS apps need the same permissions. They just dont tell you
2. No need. Just don't install warez
3. Charges fast on ac. Fasted phone I've had. Usb / car chargers supply half the power

actually anandtech.com showed that the N5 is limited to 1.5amps. but you are right about the stock charger only being a 1.2 amp charger

I will add something as well in your help :
1. In iOS they just don't tell you what the apps are accessing. Still want to prevent some, then use app ops (but it required to be rooted, so I won't advice to jump on unlocking and rooting right away)
2.Not required as long as you install from playstore, read the reviews a bit before installing any application. Still want to use, you can have a look at avast.
3. Few advices for battery save,
- turn off always scanning (settings > wifi > press settings [the three . on right bottom] > Advanced > Uncheck always scanning)
- Change location settings (settings > location > mode = battery saving)
- If it is really not required, turn off "ok google" hot word detection. Open google now page, goto bottom, click 3 dot > settings > voice > uncheck hotword detection. My battery life is precious than a single "ok google". I can tap on microphone icon if needed. (that was my view)
- Switch to 2G when not required. There is an application called tasker, you can automate switching 2g/3g/4g networks as per application, (and many more, must have) event etc. Very useful app. (some example - here and here). But again it is optional.
- I found google default brightness is too high for my need. Use LUX application to do so. Link few samples on different lighting condition and you will be good to go.
- Last & best : Use franko kernel (but need to unlock boot loader)
Battery charging : As other mentioned use wall charger.
4. Ok Google - I don't use it.
5.dashclock is best option in my view. Anyway, to get it in lock screen, a step is required. Settings > security > check enable widgets. After installation of the app, lock the phone, tap power button to goto lock screen, now swipe from left to add a widget.

While you probably haven't gotten around to rooting yet I would suggest looking into that and installing greenify to save some battery. Also turn off wifi scanning. There are a lot of ways to save battery so I suggest using the search function and reading the forums. Lots of useful stuff in here.

Welcome to xda. I would definitely read up on some of the stickies articles and other topics that have been posted.
To reiterate what has mostly been said already:
1) iOS doesn't tell you it just does uses those permissions anyway.
2) I have never heard if anyone getting a virus on their android. I think it is one of many misconceptions about android running amok.
3) this is the fastest phone I have had that charges on ac power. Keep in mind that USB ports and car chargers only put out about half the power of a regular outlet. Also keep in mind the hardware you are running. Assuming you did not have a 5s you now have a quad core phone with 2gb of ram and so on. More hardware more battery
4) I personally use nova launcher was not a big fan of google play launcher. It's a work in progress.
5) using dash clock is probably your best solution to that. I do not lock my phone at all so I just pull down to see my notifications.
Android is not prone to viruses. Due to the enhancements made in 4.1 and 4.4, android is one of the most secure mobile OSes available. Yes I said it, iOS fans gonna hate, but its true. Less than 0.00000000? Of apps are actually malicious and attempt to evade runtime security. iOS would use almost the same permissions, but to keep it simpler and more user friendly, they choose not to display the permissions screen. The battery is kinda normal, but you must be really bored to rely on SoT as a battery benchmark. Also, check out Dashclock lock screen widget

turn your brightness down.
I think to many people overlook this or think they missing out if the screen is not SUPER bright.
Might brightness is off auto, way down and my screen turns off in like 15 secs.
Now your question with rapid discharge points back to the comment about no data and okay google.
Are you in an area with bad coverage because at my job we have HORRIBLE coverage at my desk and my battery will kill itself some days. We used to have a booster on our building and I could go 2 days without charging my phone. SERIOUSLY TWO DAYS!
Since ATT came out and pulled our booster Im back to a faster death just sitting as it looks for signal.
One thing you can do with the 5 I love is set the preferrred network off LTE if you know there is no LTE. this will save you some juice for sure.
There are a lot of tweaks you can do to save battery life, just fool with the phone until you get what you find is a good balance.
as for security, youre fine, just dont install some Chinese 3rd party banking app. Always take the time to read reviews (be sure there are plenty and they are legit) and even look online.
Im pretty particular with what I install but Im also not an app whore

Exactly. I thought that this phone had terrible battery life when I first got it, but it turned out that I just had the brightness set too high. I keep it at about 1/3, and I average about 4-5 hours of screen on time. It's still plenty bright for my purposes. My shutoff time is always set to a half hour though. I don't like my screen to get dim or shut off unless I tell it to.
