Hi Guys
I have no doubt there is probably thousands of people who are like me on this forum, but I would just like everyone's feedback and advice on
what they find very unique about the One S. Now I am a bit of a lurker on the forum and read a lot of whats going on but im really interested in
any tips or advice anyone has to offer.
If I would have to ask anything it would be this specifically;
How do RUU's Work and how do I know which one I can use?
I have been researching this quite a bit, but ill be honest I moved from an iPhone to the One S and there is just to much for me to keep up with.
I literally had a panic attack trying to rooting my phone let alone flashing a rom. The first 2 days I had it i was convinced my phone was bricked and then i realized there is a difference... I actually owned a S3 version of the one S which is pretty stupid in my opinion that theres 2 different phones... I feel a bit conned but oh well...
I'm currently using Trickdroid 3.0.0 but I have no idea how to go to 4 seeing I live in Australia and don't know how to relock, what and how to flash stock recovery and which RUU to use and where to find it.
Anyways theres my problems and thoughts I would really appreciate any help or advice offered from anyone thats willing.

Hey mate welcome to the forums...firstly, you may want to put this in the Q&A section since you have listed it as a question. Anyhow, plenty of threads on the topics you've asked about:
RUU's are essentially Stock firmware for your device released by the manufacturer. They are used to reset your phone to stock or factory condition and will wipe all your data. They flash onto your device when you plug it into your PC. Note that seeing as you're in Australia, check if your phone is carrier branded as you'll need a carrier RUU in this case to relock and such. Some threads to get you started:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674202
You wanted TrickDroid 4? have you tried here: http://trickdroid.org/trickdroid-villec2-27-10-2012/ [v4 for S3 devices]
For RUUs the ones i know of are here: http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Ville
WARNING these are Euro and probably UNBRANDED RUUs so look around before trying these you might brick your device.
ALSO be aware as you have an S3 version of the One S you can't flash S4 ROMs or kernels...
Hope it helps!
Thanks for all your help.
I understand the basics of what the RUU is, but you have cleared up a lot of confusion. Ok here's what I can gather, I knew my phone was a S3 and already flashed to 3.0.0 but in order to flash version 4 I needed the correct RUU as a base. My main problem is actually finding the one I needed now I gathered they are all euro RUU and I couldn't find any Asia versions also I don't think it helps that my phone Is possibly carrier locked to Optus.
I did some more research and somewhere on the forum I found it was possible to change the CID to 11111111 which would allow me to flash any stock RUU from the link you provided right? I attempted this but hit a road block as there has only been success with the S4 model and I think it has to be S-OFF, My CID is currently OPTUS001.
I'm guessing there's no hope for me at the moment to flash stock 4.0.4?
I hope I'm right in all this because like I said I have been reading a lot on the forum. Also I do apologise posting here i just didn't know what to do really, I wasn't allowed to post anyware on the forum threads except here especially the trickdroid thread.
Again thank you for your help.

i dont think you need to be S-Off to change your CID to 11111111.
I'm using the S4 version of HTC One S, i didnt have S-Off but i managed to change my CID to 11111111.
I think most importantly you need ADB and fastboot to be set up properly, then follow the steps described here exactly.
Oh I assure you fast boot and adb are set up correctly its the S3 model that's having issues getting the super CID I had noticed it didn't matter if it was on or off for the S4 version but other than that it didn't work for me and a few others. I read in the super CID thread.
Sent from my HTC One S using xda app-developers app
Haha you're on Optus, I used to have a contract with them.
Instead of SuperCID which doesn't work for some reason on S3s, try changing your CID to HTC__001. You do this by typing fastboot oem writecid HTC__001. If that succeeds, you should be able to use an unbranded RUU to take your device back to stock.
Sent from my locked, tampered ville
You sure that will work? I'll give it a shot, but does that mean I can use any RUU from the list? Any you can recommend?
[Edit] Ok I tried and it failed, I tried about 4 times and it basicaly just gives me this:
C:\Users\Administrator>fastboot oem readcid
...
(bootloader) cid: OPTUS001
OKAY [ 0.010s]
finished. total time: 0.011s
C:\Users\Administrator>fastboot oem writecid HTC__001
...
(bootloader) villec2_init_sd, SD card already power on
(bootloader) [SD_HW_ERR] SD: No device attached
(bootloader) 902910 902E20
FAILED (status read failed (Too many links))
finished. total time: 1.318s
Its like it crashes the bootloader and i have to restart the phone after doing that command... Any ideas?

I was wondering how you would install a custom rom to my ds with the following:
Hboot 2.00.0002 unlocked bootloader with htvdev s on and not rooted.
Thanks in advance
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
Install a custom recovery, i.e. clockworkmod, see here under section 1, step 2.
do I have to be rooted?
EDIT: I can't s-off my hboot version is there any way to downgrade?
The suggested guide will still work.
If you want to downgrade, there are two threads here (look for them) already for that. Get shell root, then change the misc version then install the RUU.
can you please give me the link to the thread? and what are chances of bricking if I downgrade? And do I need a goldcard and what is one? Thanks
anyone know what to do?
If you cant use search then you are 100% likely to brick your done....
Go the general section.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1031 ....... Then at the topish right it says search this forum....... type in "downgrade" and make sure show threads is selected (noting worse than a million posts from the same thread)...... then its the the two top ones.
Fear not though I have the link here to the search results.
I understand this is all some sort of crazy back water town language and customs, I really do, so take a week and read read read and read, NOBODY is unable to understand it, crazy I know, but is possible.
And if you did some research you'd see that your questions have been asked (and answered) several times.
Good luck for the week ahead.
thanks a lot so if my phone is branded (which it is to vodafone) i download the vodafone ruu? I am following this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399331&highlight=downgrade
does anyone know what to do?
Any help appreciated
As far as i know downgrading works with both branded and unbranded ruus, but i would recommened to use the branded one. Afterwards i would flash the eng hboot (0.98.200) which simplifys further customization.
Sent from my HTC Desire S
i don't understand the bit about the eng hboot what does that mean? and do i need a goldcard? and what is one?
anyone know what to do?
Decide are you going to use HTCdev unlock or are you going to downgrade. If you are sticking with HTCdev then ignore the ENG hboot.
And just make the goldcard already, and no you don't need root, I have two goldcards in drawer, just to be safe, so make the card. I've already told you what to do, you refuse to listen.
I also told you to take a week and read cause you don't know your elbow from you foot currently, and stop bumping your post every few hours.
I won't help any more cause you can't help yourself.
Question to the experienced Dev's on this One-S forum - what do you think are the chances of achieving S-OFF for the One-S in addition to the Unlocked bootloader ?
I remember S-OFF took a little while for the HTC Desire platform and was wondering if you felt it was just a matter of time before someone figured a way for the One-S or have HTC locked us out permanently ?
I enjoy the freedom of loading Custom ROMs with the unlocked bootloader, but to be stuck on the original shipped baseband/radio feels like we are handcuffed using devices that we own!
Thoughts appreciated...
Not a dev, but, sure we will. Got it on the N1 months ago--
This thread may help you get the newer radio--haven't read all of it though--
S-OFF will come !!! I know it will..
There are several people on these forums with a S-OFF One S already !! but they came shipped like that, either by fault or a developer phone...
All we need is some dumps from them and a lot of time and patience and we will be there.... I make it sound easy lol..........its not !

Seems like a PIA to me, but according to this thread (and following the very long, very detailed How-To) you can flash a radio.
As for S-Off, who knows. I haven't seen or read anywhere that anyone is working on that.

That thread does not detail how to flash a radio. It simply is a tutorial for reverting to 1.53 Stock so the OTA can update the radio. If we could flash radios, we could probably flash one with the security bit flipped and have a true S-OFF. Alas, we're far from it...

Yeah, didn't read all the steps. Another PIA way is flash the RUU with that Radio, then root and flash the ROM you want. Sorry, without S-Off guess we're SOL.
Alright to start here's where I am right now
Unlocked hboot 1.27
rooted device running CWM 5.0.0.8
Running stock Bell Canada 4.0.3 ICS
software version 3.32.666.13
I was trying to flash virtuos (sp?) rom as I've heard it's very good on battery life, after I rooted the device with the HTC Dev method as if I try the revolutionary method it gives me an unsupported message as my hboot is 1.27. The flash worked however it just hung at the virtuous screen. (however I read that this rom used the 3.32 base so I thought it should have worked...I dunno) After a bit more research I assumed this was to do with not being super CID
CID is currently BM___001 (Bell CID)
I have not been able to change my superCID either as when I try I get the following:
C:\adb>fastboot oem writecid 11111111
... INFOvreg_set: request is duplicated id 14
INFO pyramid_init_sd, SD card power on ok
INFOsdcc_init_memory_device done
INFO[FAT_ERROR] fat_open_file: can not find SMART_IO.CRD
INFO[JAVACARD_ERR] SMART_IO.CRD cann't find
OKAY [ 1.081s]
finished. total time: 1.082s
This is apparently because I'm not S-OFF, though I can't because the revolutionary method doesn't work. I know about the wire trick however I just don't want to do it. I've been reading a bit and apparently it's possible to downgrade the hboot so that you can use the revolutionary method ,however I can't find any instructions that are plain english. I've got some experience with my old Atrix but the HTC tool set is obviously completely different.
So is a downgrade possible? If so would anyone be able to give me a walkthrough, I don't want to brick the phone. A link to another thread with lingo I haven't grasped yet isn't a solution and chances are I've already read it
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

So is what your trying to say is that the only way that I can get S-OFF is with Juopunutbear's wire method? Downgrading the firmware is not an option with 1.27?
I'm looking for complete sentances here, not assuming I'm an expert in doing this with HTC phones. More information is better than responses that are cryptic to anyone that doesn't have months of experience with these phones, not trying to be rude but that answer tells me absolutely nothing, sorry.
Yeah, thats mean it. You must go S-OFF and them get the SuperCid.
Then you must start a GB RUU and flash it.
Alright, well that sucks. Guess I'll have to wait for revolutionary to be compatible with 1.27 then so I can S-OFF and supercid that way.
Are there any ROMS that are compatible with 3.32.666.13?
There are also roms, which supports 3.33xxx

Hi,
Revolutionary are not making anything any time soon...
There are several ways/methods to s-off.
Look HERE
You can also flash ROMS with the same firmware that you have on your phone.
Check the Asskicker thread.
Well I said the hell with it, did the wire trick. Impressive I must say, worked like a charm...forgot to backup my sd card though...lol, damn.
I did notice it made an img file of the sd card contents, anyway to read that? if not it's no big deal there wasn't much on it.

Hey
Thanks to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525100
finally i rooted my HTC Desire S
and i installed this room "[Fallout Evolution V4.4.0|Sense 4.0A| ICS 4.03] [Kernel Stock 3.0.16]" from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679125
but i found it has many bugs and the browser is very laggy and sluggish so i decided to come back and run the official stock room again
so my question is how i can remove the rooting and make the phone like nothing happened to it, like the first time i bought it?
how can i install the official stock room again to get OTA updates normally again??
Sorry for my little informations in this but this is my first time to root so am not expert
thanks in advance
Search and read - this has been answered literally hundreds of times. It will all depend on your hboot, how you got S-Off etc - but the answers are already out there.
If you are capable of reading to get where you are, then you are more than capable of reading and getting back.
The first thing that you should do is to search for threads with similar question to understand the basics.
Than:
1) find your version:
fastboot getvar version-main
2) find a RUU according to the version
Look for the sticky thread "Shipped ROMs collection for Desire S"
If there is no such look for a downgrade guide
If there is a such RUU available, continue:
3) lock the bootloader
fastboot oem lock
4) use the RUU
Done.

I bought this phone over eight month ago. I have been patiently waiting for the over-the-air Jellybean update, and it is STILL not here. I understand that it is only a few days away because it was just released for Rogers users in Canada, but I just terminated my account with AT&T. They charge me $120 a month for the lowest amount of minutes with 5gb of data. I bought an unlock code off of eBay for about $1.50 and I have a T-Mobile sim due to come in on Tuesday. During this time of service interruption I plan on rooting my phone to flash custom ROMs. My phone is on firmware version 2.20/4.0.4. I am running Mac OS X. I know there are tons of tutorials on how to do this, but NOTHING is working for me. Would someone mind helping me out here. Useful links, definitions, etc?
-Are you using the right guide ( NOT one X )
-Do you have any experience with flashing etc.?
-What methods have you tried?
-What version is your hboot / os / fw etc.?
IMO, stock ain't that great. But I can understand the hesitation to go down the modding route.
Read some more, clearly post your sw versions and the rom/s you are trying to install with failure symptoms ( after googling ) and people will help you.
Good Luck!

1.) I would love to post a link to the guide I have been using on youtube, but I do not have enough posts to do so yet. I used a guide on youtube that gave a tutorial on Windows, then Linux, then Mac OS X. I was able to successfully root/change my CID to 111111. The guide only went that far, then I tried to unlock the bootloader on htcdev.com, but the tutorial they give was only for Windows, and I am not so savvy on Mac OS X. I gave up and left it at that. This morning I did a factory reset on my phone, so when I use CID getter, it says my CID has been set back to the stock CID, but when I tried to do the same method on Windows, it is telling my that my CID has already been change... Yes it has already been changed, but it has been change BACK too!
2.) No, I have been using iPhones since their initial release date. If it matters, I have successfully jailbroken every iPhone I have owned, and am pretty savvy with this sort of stuff, I just don't know where to take off.
3.) The only method that I have tried, and that I know of is the XFactor exploit. It goes as far as recovering twice, but when it tries to recover the CID, it says it has already been changed. I tried to run the unlock_code.bin or w/e, but it just says "waiting for device."
I am running stock ICS 4.0.4, firmware 2.20 on AT&T. When I boot in to bootloader it says:
*** LOCKED ***
EVITA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.14.0002
RADIO-0.19AS.32.09.11_2
eMC-boot
Jun 11, 2012.14:36:28
If you know any other methods of changing my fricken CID, I would be the happiest person EVER.
Alright well I can't help you with the CID part but I can tell you that once you do get root access, dont flash a rom butbinstead downgrade your hboot from 1.14 to 1.09. This can easily be achieved by using the Jewel/Evita tool kit in the Android Devolpement topic. You want to do this because on hboot 1.14 you cannot change/flash the boot partition (also radio partition) when in recovery mode. In 1.09 you can. This makes flashing a hell of alot easier. Good luck!

I beg to differ. I am running on 1.14 and I have absolutely no problems with flashing roms. I would think it might be riskier to downgrade hboot than to just flash a ROM. Flashing a ROM really isn't all that difficult IF you know what you're doing.

I tend to agree. Some say the JET tool (to downgrade hboot) is not that hard. And I haven't done it myself (and don't need to as I'm on 1.09). But my understanding is that you have to soft brick the phone in order to get it into Qualcomm download mode, to do the downgrade.

I would advise against randomly searching for guides on Youtube or other places, and sticking to the guides here on XDA. At the least, other sources are not well organized, and can get you flashing something meant for the Tegra3 version of the One X, which can get you in a lot of trouble.
Sorry I should have clarified. I was talking about the kernel.

I'm running over 2.2 too. The only Rom ove got to work is viper. 3.1.0 is damn good bar some lower battery life.
Install latest twrp, flash boot and clear caches and install zip from recovery.
I suspect you have taken a dodgy path playing with a level lower than you have to, on the bright side, your phone still works and you learnt something!
