Hi Guys,
Apologies if this has been discussed before. I have looked for answers everywhere and i could not find any.
Ok, I have a Desire S which is branded to Telstra (Australia), I was sick of all the useless app that Telstra had put in and wanted to get rid of all those.
I used revolutionary method to get it s-off and install Generic Firmware. After that i was happy not having any of Telstra's bloatware on the phone. Then came the update of 2.3.5 and as usual downloaded the firmware and used RRU to Update. Big mistake on my part, i didn't read anything and just tried to push RRU on the phone, the result was White screen with HTC logo and nothing past that. Tried everything no luck, then looking for answers, i found a solution to remove revolutionary, I could see revolutionary gone in HBOOT but the phone would not start.
to solve this i went to telstra to send it to repair, warranty was there and when telstra asked what happened, i said i was updating an app and it went to this screen, Tech guys said this is the similar 3rd problem in a day. so after 5 days the phone got repaired, New IMEI number and logic board had to be replaced.
Now all over again i have bunch of telstra bloatware on the phone. I want to get Generic 2.3.5 with sense 3.0. what is the process to follow so that i don't make the same mistake again?
All i want to do is get it s-off and install generic Firmware, the easiest way possible something like revolutionary. I tried going with ADB but found a bit risky.
Any advice in getting Generic HTC Desire S (2.3.5 with Sense 3.0) the easiest way would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

To get a generic firmware from some other area, you need to get Super CID. I don't know much about it, just that CID's like a region code, Super CID enables you to get generic ROMs from any region. Only XTC Clip can do that on a Desire S as far as i know. Flashing a custom ROM after Revolutionary S-OFF is a better option....
Listen, I really recommend you to use a Custom ROM based on the update if you are ready to S-OFF. Hyperion is much faster and has a lot more features. Hell, if you do S-OFF, why settle for Sense 3? Get Sense 3.5. I recommend endymion.

What is the easiest way to get the rom sorted, I know how to get the custom rom installed there are too many posts everywhere that you can read through and make a decision and find roms of your choice, but there seems to be nothing about stock roms, i am sure there are people who are willing to get stock rom and their carrier is not rolling out the update coz they want more junk to be added.
Steps on how to get generic stock rom would be really helpful.

Hey Ben, Thanks for this, I went ahead and got the ROM as you suggested. Installed the base verison, then the add-on and the update. I have been palying around with it and so far loving it.
Only problem tough, I cannot use Market. I can open market look for apps and download, but when it starts to install, the phone re-boots. any known issues with this and is there a workaround to sort this out.
Ok, so here is what i did, Flashed Base version again and market started working again with no issues. Another issue which is not so much of an issue but only at night, why does the soft keys don't lit up on Desire S?. any way to fix these. Thanks guys.

Thanks for that, I did a search for the issue and did the same thing as you had advised, but didn't work. Then I flashed the base version again and then the update, which worked. Don't know what had happened there.
But yeah loving the new rom and i would say was a better move to be on a custom ROM and getting rid of Carrier's junk installed.

Ok, so instead of creating a new post i have decided to post it here since it is already been discussed.
I was happy with rooted phone and endymion Rom and was happy until my phone started heating up and restarted on its own as if it had a mind of its own, I called HTC and they advised to send it for repair, i had to unroot the phone and sent for repair. Got the phone back with updated version and i need help rooting the phone.

I was reading the guide and this is where i am confused.
6.This command will gets you out of adb shell.. so we need to get back to adb shell and you will see "#" sign..meaning you are temp rooted and we can then proceed to changing MISC_VERSION:

IMO you can leave it as it is. 1.27.xxx is older than your RUU version so I think it will work fine.

Thanks for that, yes i did follow the guide, and then got stuck again. The problem i am facing is after pushing all the files as of the guide, i run tacoroot the phone restarts and all i get is a red triangle with exclamation mark in it and nothing else happens.
then to get rid of it, i pull out the battery and do a complete factory reset. I have done this about 5 times now but still the same.
Also tried using super one click but that dint work either and freezes on waiting for device.
anything i have missed or is there any other solutions, any GUI programs or video to help if i am missing something.
any help is appreciated.

I believe that you have to boot the original recovery before using tacoroot to get it working ( I mean boot it once, then boot normally).
After using tacoroot --root, your phone will probably go in bootloop, don't worry about that and change your misc_version as described in the tutorial.
And please, stop pulling out the battery, you will brick your phone this way.

I don't understand,"boot into original recovery". To try i booted the phone in HBOOT and pressed recovery and same thing the triangle shows. am i missing something here.
EDIT: I went till the last step and this is what i get "Patching and backing up partition 17...

Thanks dude, this worked and going thru revolutionary. i did some changes in the steps and will update what i did in a while after i get a rom installed.
Thank you everyone for help and support. i was able to downgrade my HBOOT and install a custom ROM. It would not have been possible if you guys had not supported.
one thing i have learnt is the more you read the more you find things useful and you actually learn how ti weigh your risk and benefits and avoid ending up with an expensive paper weight.
so this is what i did.
after using universal misc version file i was getting 140 error in RUU, boot loader version error, tried 3 time but would not let me get past that, then out of frustration i thought about giving it a last try for good or for worse, in the misc version section i changed a bit.
adb shell
cd /data/local/tmp
./misc_version -s 1.36.841.3 (Same number as my RUU)
then RUU went fine and then revolutionary.
well, if any kind of newbie person in trying to root the phone i would suggest to read and if you think you have read enough, its probably you haven't.

First android phone it's a AT&T One X, i'll be using it on the Bell network. Got a good deal on Kijiji and I didn't ask enough questions apparently, lol.
The phone is clearly not stock, took me several hours to piece that together. I get it, I'm a noob. I can tell it's running Cleanrom 4.5. I want to get it back to something close to stock. I plan to learn all about rooting/roms but I want to do it from a vanilla phone so that I get to actually do it myself.
I googled and found a tutorial (link). I deleted the 'su' file and superuser.apk. I followed the rest of the steps and it didn't seem to do anything, just rebooted back into cleanrom.
I kept googling and now I'm following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1859714
I guess i'm going to flash from an RUU now ? My CID is 11111111, so I've read that means I have superCID and any RUU will work. I want to get to JB eventually, so can I just flash direct to the Europe 3.14 JB from HTCRUU? Or go with one of the ICS versions?

If you want completely stock you need to use fast boot and boot into hboot and run fastboot OEM lock
(You may need to search around to learn how do that)

cleanrom 4.5 is pretty good and close to stock but adds quick settings, debloated, power menu and some other tweaks. i would keep it how it is and just learn about how custom roms work. you can learn how to use twrp in its current state and maybe learn how to use some root apps.
just so you know your phone is the evita not the endeavoru.

I've already been into fastboot. Figured that out because it was a required step in the guides I said I was trying to use. I have all the drivers installed and I'm able to talk to the phone via fastboot at the comand prompt.

I'm a little unclear about HBOOT vs. fastboot. I can get into the bootloader and go to the fastboot USB mode... is this analogous to HBOOT?
So my steps right now are:
1) Download correct RUU, Evita 2.20 ICS - I've also seen people discussing 1.85 vs 2.20, why chose one over another?
2) fastboot oem lock
3) Install RUU while phone is in bootloader mode

I would strongly suggest to slow down, and learn more about what root is and means, before going back stock. Root is just a change in permissions. You gain absolutely nothing by unrooting, and lose quite a bit. You lose the ability to do all sorts of mods to your phone, flash custom ROMs, use apps that require root like Adaway and Titanium Backup (and many others), remove carrier bloatware, activate tethering, and much more.
People have gone through great pains to find root methods for our device (and other Android devices). Many come on here looking for these root methods, for the awesome benefits that root means. I've seen very few, if any, people before you that have said "crap I accidentally got a rooted device, and don't want root". Think about that one for a while.
Plus, CleanROM 4.5 is already based on a more updated firmware version than any of the official AT&T RUUs. Plus it includes a lot of cool features and optimizations. Again, going from CleanROM to stock is a step backwards, not forwards, and you are gaining nothing, and losing quite a bit. Another thing about CleanROM, is that it is devoid of the AT&T bloatware (and there is a lot). Keep in mind that on the stock AT&T ROM, the bloat is not removable without root, so you are stuck with quite a few crappy apps that you will never use. That alone is a huge reason to have a rooted device. Also bear in mind that stock AT&T does not allow tethering (unless you have a data plan that allows it) and has other stock HTC apps (like FM radio) disabled. These cannot be enabled unless you have root.
Another thing, is that you will not get Jellybean any faster on stock than rooted. While its true that rooted, this phone will not be able to take the OTA when it rolls out (hasn't happened yet). But a stock rooted JB firmware will almost certainly be posted here on XDA, that is safely flashable on a rooted device. This often happens within a couple days of the OTA starting to roll out, if not faster. Sometimes even before the OTA, as sometimes the official RUUs get leaked before the OTA. All it takes is for a dev to get his hands on the files, apply root, and upload it here. Learning how to flash such a file to your device is very simple. Not much more than: download the file to your phone, boot into recovery, and press "install". So yet again, stock gains nothing over being rooted.
While its true that root is not for everyone. But if you've already found this place, and learned what things like RUU, bootloader, and fastboot are, then you probably already know more than most folks do about Android. You may feel in over your head, but it really just takes a few hours of reading to learn the fundamentals. And with that knowledge, you can do so much more with your phone than you can without root.

I appreciate the advice, thanks. To be clear, eventually I will probably bring the device back to where it is now. I've used linux before so I have an understanding of the permissions system and the added benefits of root.
My goal here is to get the phone back to stock so that I can learn the rooting/flashing process from the start, not the end. I understand why that might seem counterintuitive but I'm a very hands on person and I'll learn more of the theory by walking through the process than reading about how somebody else hacked this device to get where it is now.
Sure I'm making extra work for myself but I know what im getting into.

You should have said so from the start, then. This pretty much negates everything I just typed above.
Its admirable that you want to learn the process from scratch, and its the opposite attitude of most n00bs here.
My advice, as another mentioned above, is stick to XDA, and don't follow instructions from random Googled sites. Most of those sites don't clearly delineate between our phone (Snapdragon S4) and the international (Tegra3) version, and following instructions for the international version is a great way to brick your phone.
Other than that, lock the bootloader, run the RUU, and have fun. Also check your hboot version. If its anything but 1.14, don't run the 2.20 RUU. You will want the 1.73 or 1.85 RUU instead, as the 2.20 RUU will update the hboot to 1.14, which plugs the holes by which boot.img and radios can be flashed from recovery. Unless you want to create ever MORE work for yourself, as the hboot can be downgraded using a Linux computer, lol!

You might be confused. You shouldn't have to pull a boot.img from an RUU typically, only from a custom ROM zip. And only if you are on boot 1.14.

Hello community!! I have been reading through the site for a couple of days now, and I'm still confused which rooting method to use since the At&t, and Rogers are mixed together. Sometimes the techniques used are interchanged, sometimes not. Well my question, or problem is is that I am trying to root the Rogers HTC OneX, running the latest installed updates, which are;

I'm trying to achieve root because I want to remove bloatware from my phone.I do not know how to achieve root to do this, I don't mind temporary root, aslong as it keeps the changes I made during that root session. I've read around, and some of the posts that are relevant to my problem are outdate by almost 7 months, with users claiming they're having problems with the method given, and these links were directed from a page that was only edited a couple days ago, so it's a bit confusing, especially when At&t, and Rogers are always jumbled around interchangeably. Anyways,I'd love up-to-date instructions on how to succesfully root this phone. Do I need to unlock the bootloader first? If I have to unlock the bootloader, fine(I know..HTCDev), would someone also provide me a way to unroot aswell, and lock the bootloader back up for a smooth stock startup, incase I want to sell the phone some day? My goal is to get root, remove bloatware, and be able to restore to stock when needed.
This wonderful community's posts also helped me root my Rogers Samsung Galaxy S3!!!

Now as for your software this could be tricky... This may or may not work cause you have the latest build from htc. The latest exploit developed is for 2.20. I cant think of any issues of trying this. I just simply may not take. Use at your own risk kind of thing though.

Go here and follow the How to Unlock the Bootloader (When your on HTC DEV.com skip to number 8 Just go to the SDK folder and press shift + right click in the folder click open Command windows here. and then follow the steps from 8) Make sure you are in Fastboot mood by turning off you phone then when its off hold Power + Volume down until the screen comes up and click bootloader then your good!

I tried running that program(TOOL] HTC One X (Evita) All-In-One Toolkit V2.1 [1-22-2013] [PERM), but my CID keeps coming back ROGER001, instead of 11111111, therefore the included exploit does not work, But if I manually unlock it through HTCdev, can I resume the steps through that program? Thanks!!
PS: I found out my hboot version is 1.94.000
I unlocked my bootloader through the HTCdev site successfully. Now i'm stuck on actually granting myself root. I've used a couple of files thrown around here, but nothing seems to work. Even temporary root that keeps changes. Anyone?
Once you are bootloader unlocked. Install twrp I believe you need 2.3.3.1 on your firmware and then flash a superuser zip

On the second Site i sent you scroll down abit and you will see How to install TWRP custom recorvery do that and then you will be good. after that download SuperUser ZIp and install it ( once again scroll down on the page and look how to install a custom ROM) for the Custom ROM part there are better tutorials that you can find on this site but yeah.

X-Factor exploit is not needed for the Rogers version (or any other carrier aside AT&T). And as the OP found out, don't think it works on his version, anyway.
For all other variants (besides AT&T) just unlock the bootloader via HTCDev.com, install TWRP custom recovery, and flash SU or a rooted ROM.

So, I may have unlocked the bootloader for nothing! I also realized my hboot version was 2.14, NOT 1.94 like I thought. Will there be any harm in trying to flash TWRP, and root anyhow? Will this brick my device, or simply not take? If TWRP installs, and I push SU, and then I get undesired glitchy results, can I restore back to stock, or atleast an original Ruu? Thanks

Hi Guys,
I'm trying to get a 'stable' rom for a phone I've given to my daughter (Evita / Telstra one XL).
I've tried a heap of things, tried to s-off, change radio files etc... Anyway, current status is that it's been unlocked, s-on, and I have twrp.. I'm using KickDroid XL v4.0.0 ROM, looks great, but the phone keeps on rebooting... Also loosing 3G signal, so have to reboot it quite a few times a day to resolve. (tired another rom, same problem, loss of 3g signal and multiple reboots during the day)
I'm sure it's got to do with the radio file, but can't seem to fix that. I've read 'so much!' information, but really confused now. I've tried to supercid it, unsuccessfully, tried to find the all-in-one toolking (bt it looks like its been removed)..

Any help in how to (or if I should) get the radio/hboot up to hopefully resolve the loss of 3G?
I'm no expert, but not that dumb either. I follow instructions from the start, but most of the time it gets stuck half way (ie, when doing supercid, boots to the HTC logo, but won't go any further)..

The problem is not that the ROM is unstable, the ROM is perfectly stable if you meet the requirements. The problem is your current firmware version. You need to update to the 2.15 firmware package. It does state that very clearly in the "You Need" section in the beginning of the Kickdroid thread. Please search/research properly before posting in future, it's part of the XDA rules. Why are you even giving your daughter a rooted/modded phone at all? Unless she has an understanding of what root means, its not a good idea. Does she even need anything except a bone stock phone?

I'll do some more checking on firmware 2.15... I've honestly read about 5 hours last weekend on various threads... some lead to dead ends (it toolbox), some I can't get to work (supercid)... I tried this a couple of months ago, and almost bricked it, but managed to get twrp working...
Redpoint73, are you asking why give her a phone, or why a rooted phone? The answer to the first one is that she is 11, and catches the bus to and from school. The phone is used in an emergency. I've rooted it to give her some new features, and because it was locked with Telstra and that is not the carrier we are using anymore (much cheaper options here than Telstra), so I needed to get rid of the firmware...
Overall, I appreciate any help. I actually run 5 forums (car related), and I fully understand noob's coming on and asking the same question week after week. Our forums have a lot less posts than this one (< 200,000), but we still have members, week in-week out, answering the same questions because they like to help, and because sometimes there is too much information out there to sift through, especially when somebody is willing to point you in the right direction with a friendly smile

Its pretty clear from my post that it was root/mod that I was referring to. Root has nothing to do with Subsidy (SIM) Lock, and the firmware has little to do with the carrier you are on (I've been using the German T-Mobile stock ROM for a while now, despite being on AT&T).
Of course its up to you to decide what you do with the phone. But you should consider (if you haven't already) the security risk of giving a rooted device to a user that knows little or nothing about such things. Even more so for s-off, which is necessary for the solution that timmaaa suggested.
My question has less to do with exactly "who" the phone is for. But more to the point, when people come on here saying they are modding the phone for "someone else" (be it mom, third cousin, or whatever), if that person isn't doing it for themselves, its pretty questionable whether they need such mods at all.

I received a new HTC Sensation as a gift, It was bought from Ebay. It came with Stock 2.3. I would like some help on how to root, install CWM/4EXT and install Sultanxda's CM11 ROM. I also like Viper Rom but we all know Kitkat is in a lot of ways better than JB. I have already read the guides in the Forums,but that didn't help me much. This is my first Android phone but not necessarily the first phone I flash a Custom Rom to. I have some experience with LG and Samsung phones, but those are easier. In few words, could someone please answer this questions?
1) Do I need to update to ICS to install CM11? Also, how do I install CWM/4EXT and Root the phone?
2) Do I lose my network connectivity? I mean, do I have to backup something like IMEI data or EFS Folder? I don't live in the US (sorry for my bad english) and the phone is unlocked, dunno if that matters.
3) This may sound silly and stupid, but can I live without Gapps? I don't really need them, I can just install another market. Gapps use too much resources and the only Google Apps that I MAY use are Youtube and Chrome Browser. Also, I need to sync contacts but I already exported as Vcard file. I do not need Google Play or the other Google Apps.

To flash another rom you need to be s-off or to unlock your bootloader. I don't know exactly if you need to update to ICS, but I don't think so, it should be enough to update your firmware (as far as I know that's necessary). For kitkat roms you should use 4EXT.
You don't loose anything, but you can make a backup of your stock rom as it is with 4ext and save it to your computer.
Yes, you can live without gapps. You don't want them, don't flash them.
To install a custom rom you need to do the following:
Get root access - go to htcdev.com select Sensation they will tell you what to do next
Install Custom Recovery - find an CWM TWRP or 4EXT image for Sensation here on XDA and flash it using fastboot
Get S-OFF - go to http://unlimited.io/juopunutbear.htm they will also guide you trough the process ( the most fun ive had unlocking, its like a game)
Then you are ready to flash custom roms. As for CM11 our device isnt supported officially though there are great CM11 based roms for our device.
Installing rom is easy dont worry when you are done unlocking the phone i can explain that also. If you have any further questions regarding any of the above procedures ill try to help. Cheers

S-OFF is kinda usefull, but not necessary.
I would suggest -
revolutionary to s-off (easiest way)
flash the 3.32 or 3.33 firmware (needed for latest roms)
flash 4ext recovery (latest is 1.0.0.6) i can post it if u cant find it in link below.
Then ul have full control of ur phone and u can flash any rom in recovery. Link below has all u need.

there's a guide somewheres, you don't have to s-off. I'm not even sure what the benefit of s-off is.

Yes u dont need to s-off but it has many benefits (google to find out for urself) but the main reason i suggest it too some users is because normally the people that ask how to do this and how to do that r usually the people that panic when something goes wrong then they automatically think they need to run a ruu then the ruu fails then they ask questions later when they stuck. So for me to suggest s-off is for one reason only, supercid.. then when they get stuck they can run any ruu and not worry. Anyway to s-off using revolutionary is faster than unlocking ur bootloader via htcdev, so why not? And ul have FULL control of ur phone.

Revolutionary is an easier method than juopunutbear but the later editions of HTC Sensations (XE) are not supported. Mine came with HBoot 1.27 i think and maximum for the revolutionary is 1.18 (http://revolutionary.io/).

New or second hand/used? Sensations came with stock android 2.3.x including the xe, with the option to upgrade to ICS. i have the XE and normal senny. the op of this thread says he has a sensation stock 2.3.x so he should be ok for revolutionary.

It was new came with preinstalled ICS. I bought it late, a year and some time ago.
I think we should just all wait till the OP actually replies so we know for sure what his bootloader details are, all these links for different methods is just gona confuse the xxxx outa him.

Strange coz the ics upgrade was more a test than anything. Was there for users to install if they wanted it.

Yea at some point in 2012 HTC stopped shipping Senny with Beats headphones (which i didnt care for anyway), then started shipping with stock ICS (http://www.phonearena.com/news/Whit...March-to-ship-with-Ice-Cream-Sandwich_id26512).

Cool, did not know that. Strange that they shipped it with ICS coz it was not very good, had bugs and alot of users had wifi issues. The ICS sense 3.6 roms here on xda r good but htc"s update wasnt.
