[Q] sd card not mounted - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

No big deal here. I have proted another sense ROM and have been enjoying it but the sd card wont mount in it. The sd card is fine. I made a nandroid of the ROM inquestion, full wiped and restored Supreme Sense to see what happened and all is well so it's in the Ported ROM somewhere. I have been reading what solutions other devices have for simular probs but was wondering if anyone from this community has a "speedy" solution. Or just a direction to look in.

Did you use the base ROMs system/bin files like rmt_storage and all them files there

Hmmm, I'll have to check that.
I'm a padowan with no master.
Edit: I'm away from home right now. I have got permission to post it so will put it up as soon as I can.
Edit 2: I got home and checked my work and yes I used the base ROM's (newSENSE) bin files. I am uploading this ROM to dev host and will let folks dl it and see if we can get it going.

More weird stuff. I used the a2sd app and it worked. But I still dont have access to the sd card? :banghead:

Some time trying to figure things out on XDA is like telling my cat to get the mail. I really hate to ask this! how do I get a logcat? I've been reading several tutorials and I keep getting it wrong. :crying:

Through CMD the command is " adb logcat " . If your on a PC click links to get you started in my Signature.
EDIT: here's a how to link

A command I use (without reading the link prboy gave so it might be the same) is
adb logcat >logcat.txt
Or >whatever.txt and that should place a txt file inside platform-tools with the name you specify , that way you don't miss anything,or have to look at it all through terminal

I felt really stupid asking but I just couldn't get it to work. I was even already using the guide prboy posted. Ugh.:banghead:

Yea I've tried this and it didn't work. It's very frustrating because I love the ROM and I just can't figure out how to fix it.

Great. Now none of my sd cards will mount in recovery after doing a full wipe to flash some thing new. looks like I'm screwed.

So it mounts before the wipe (as in it wipes your sd-ext during the wipe) but won't let you install from sd after the wipe? Maybe try going into advanced then reboot recovery after wiping, it might mount your sd when you reboot recovery... But that's just strange.

That happened at about 3am so I was tired and not thinking strait. I have 4 cards and got one to work. I then used prboy1969's sdformater he linked us to and cleaned at of them up. As of right now things are working again but I haven't gone back to trying to fix the sd cards mount issue on my ports "sense". Been frustraited and busy both.

Yeah it was easier for me too. For me mounting anything is a lot easier and faster in linux than in windows, I've had problems where an external drive will just not show up at all in windows, or show up with errors, but then booting into linux everything works smoothly

Glad it worked for you . BTW sometimes it's best to take a minute, and step back when your working on stuff. Give your brain a chance to process things. Happens to me all the time. A solution to something that I had an issue with, when I'm not thinking about it.

Apps to SD card app

Hey all,
I know I just put up my tutorial on how to do this but hopefully this will make things easier for everyone. I'd still suggest doing a nandroid backup first just to make sure but I tested this on my phone so it should work. Just run the app and if this is the first time moving your apps to your sd card(and you want to keep the ones you have) leave the checkbox checked. Otherwise uncheck it. Then just press the buttons that correspond to what you want to do. Enjoy
In order to use this you MUST:
1: Have an apps-to-sd ROM
2: Have your sd card partitioned correctly with FAT32 first and ext2 second.
3: Have busybox already installed to /system/xbin
NOTE: I'll try to help as much as I can but I can't take responsibility for anything this does to your phone. I'm pretty sure nothing bad will happen and nothing irreparable can happen but gotta say these things just to be sure anytime I'm messing with root permissions.
ANOTHER NOTE: I'll put this up in the market for $1. It'll remain free here but people can donate to me that way.
YET ANOTHER NOTE: I've managed to get a new method working that's a lot more stable and flexible. I will keep this thread here but won't be maintaining it.
EDIT: Moving data is too unstable, I've removed the option. It doesn't force close anymore when you don't have the setup right, it just gives an error and wont let you do anything, so that's better.
Tried it this morning and worked great. You might add a pop up at the end of moving apps to restart the device. When less experienced people use it, they won't know to do that I'm afraid.

OH SHOOT!!! I fixed this problem on the market one but forgot to put it back up on here. Umm... for now no1 should use the one posted here, until I can get home and post the updated one. OR if you still want to fix this and don't much just a bit of fiddling in the recovery terminal, after moving apps to sd, restart in recovery mode and do this:
Code:
mount data
ln -s /system/sd/app /data/app
For anyone who cares about such things, the problem is that it deletes the /data/app folder and then makes a symlink, which sounds ok, except that every super user command has to be run through the whitelist app... which no longer exists. So it's not able to set up the link and all hell breaks loose.
i did use the 1 from here
it says ln: /data/app: file exists
if i already had apps2sd, tried to upgrade my phone from 5.0 to 5.01G, so I wiped...then data.img wouldn't flash over...if i do this, will my apps show up again?

ya it's the one from here that's broken, sorry. If you haven't already flashed back and everything(still have the boot loop) then you can use the code I posted and it should fix it. I'll post the updated version tonight when I get back home.

Yes, just uncheck the checkbox. But you might want to read the note that I just posted, there's a known problem with it that has a fix but requires going into the recovery terminal. I'll post the updated version of this app that doesn't have that bug tonight.

you had the "stale NFS handle" right? I'm not really sure what's going on but something in your phone's file system sounds like it went screwy. Maybe someone like JF or LucidREM could help? Your problem goes way over my head and I'm guessing the same is true of a lot of people on here unfortunately.

jf rom
Ok question I know it says apps to sd rom is needed does this mean only haykuro roms? I have a jfrc33 1.42 and I could do apps to sd using this rom (planning on doing it tonight my 8gig class 6 card arrived) so my question is can I just use this app or do I need to do all the steps manually

It should work on any apps to sd ROM. This includes LucidREM's modified JF ROMs. If you're gonna be manually changing it into an apps to sd, then I would think it would work but can't promise it. I wasn't able to figure that out when I tried so I'm not 100% sure that they work the same but I would imagine they would. Again, though, the one posted here has that known bug which will be fixed after I get home from work.
Short answer(s):
Haykuro's ROM: definitely works
LucidREM ROM: Don't have it to test it but almost assuredly works
Self-modified: probably works?
Sounds good I wasn't doing it till later tonight anyways (stuck at work also) also is it still a good idea to keep ext2 parititon less then 2gb like lucid reported on his tutorial

Juts make another account and make it Admin. Then use the new account.
If your windows is that bad then I would either use a backup(if you did one) or a fresh install.

Find yourself a copy of BartPE with Password Renew in it.
Burn, boot, use password renew to reset the password for any account.
I'm trying this, except when I get to "adb shell a2sd install" it says a2sd: not found.
:\
I had to go to /system/bin before i could run a2sd via ./a2sd, after which it worked.

it allows you to use the ext partition from previous versions of CM. Froyo's version now uses a fat32 partition on the sd card, therefore will not read the ext partition and the fact that your apps are on there.

It's not as good, but coming from <= CM5 you may want to port along your apps.
Also Froyo's SD implementation is supported on an per app basis, but can be forced via CM. Note that dalvik cache is only moved to SD when using legacy a2sd.

froyo implementation isn't as good as apps2ext. The froyo method uses the fat32 partition but only if the dev of the app allows it to be moved to the sdcard. plus the apps don't all load on boot because the phone has to mount (prepare)the fat32 partition of the sdcard. This is the reason that many apps are not launching at boot like SetCpu and other root access apps, because the system boots before the sdcard is prepared. This is also the reason why many widgets and apps are missing from the app drawer for a lot of people as well. Cyanogenmod really needs to look at this and think about changing back to the old cm5 way of doing things.
I am trying to find a good backup app as doing a Nandroid did not work for me with doing aps2sd this way.

SK4G Development

Some of you may know me and some not. I was asked to help out on the SK4G development, so here I am.
I have some questions first.
1. You are using CWM?
2. Amend or Edify?
3. Do you have the drivers and adb set up yet?
Depending on the answers I can put out a couple of tests and then get to work on this.
I will need your newest deodexed framework-res.apk, twframework-res.apk, settings.apk, services.jar - and others as needed.
If you do not have a deodexed rom yet then I need a copy of your systemfs.rfs or a full odin to deodex it myself. I have the system dump, is this your newest rom? If so then I have already deodexed it - just let me know.
1. Yes, the epic 4g version which is buggy
2 don know
3.yes
Sent from my SGH-T839 using Tapatalk
1) No. It doesn't sound like the currently available CWM firmwares work well on the SK4G. I am waiting for one designed for this hardware. I have run CWM on other handsets, of course.
2) No. Had not heard of those until you'd mentioned them.
3) Yes. Working well. We're all set here, at least.
System dump: There only seems to be one ROM/firmware version for this phone so far. The one you have should be current. I pulled mine in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037403&page=5
Specifically here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13210149&postcount=59
I'm happy to help further. Please simply let me know what you need.
And thanks for taking this on! This could be a solid phone without some of the bloatware trash foisted on it.
1. They are using the one click root for the epic by noobnl which installs CWM 2.5.1.0
2. Amend though can't you just use update-binary and make it compatible with both

Yes, but I am old school and still use amend most of the time and needed to make sure it was going to be compatible.
Once I see some feedback on the theme I posted I will move forward - I just need to know how it turns out so I will have a better understanding of the phones layout.
Might need to send Koush a message and see if we can get a proper recovery going.
I really would love it if this phone got some custom roms. I don't want to get rid of it. But I put a ad up on craigslist to trade for a mytouch 4g.

Also as far a getting a proper working recovery, i think we may need a recovery that supports the ext-SD card. our internal memory isnt used by us because its so small. its used for things like installing apps i believe. if you use a file manager you'll see the only available SD card is the external one and same when mounting the phone. i think the epic and vibrant recovery would work just fine except we'd need one that supports the external SD card.
there is a kernel called dead horse that i used on my vibrant that had this support for ext SD but i dont think theres a way to get just the recovery out of it. hopefully someone might know a way to direct CWM to our ext SD then we might be on to something ..

Its just a driver issue. We need to know exactly which SD card reader is in the phone and see if we can contact the manufacturer for the source.
I do not know how to decompile things like drivers, but I would like to know so I could get the ball rolling on this.
I'd love to see development pickup on this phone.
I've had my G1 since Dec 08 and happily rooted and did whatever I wanted to do it with the huge support from the developer community that the G1 received.
I'm keeping myself stock until someone gets Clockwork working with nandroid and there's an unroot method.

I look forward to seeing more from you!
This looks awesome! Thanks for your hard work!
Wow. Very cool. So glad someone else is here to prove how versatile this device is.

Mainly useful for CM7 users:
This is an unusual ROM that boots entirely from your sdcard. This allows you to temporarily boot into stock EL30 which might be useful for various purposes included:
Test stuff on EL30 to compare behavior to aid in CM debugging.
Update Profile, PRL, or do Sprint Hands Free activation.
samsung-epic-stock-el30-kexec-multiboot.tar.bz2
171MB md5sum c4532cd10b37382d25af8304deb57fe8
How To Procedure
Download the tarball.
Unpack it in sdcard, leave the directory structure intact.
Boot into CWM.
"Flash" multiboot/EL30/boot_EL30.zip
It will boot EL30.
Warnings!
DO NOT MOUNT USB STORAGE. BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN.
NOT RECOMMENDED FOR PRODUCTION USE.
It will be a bit slow because your sdcard is slow.

Could someone do a video for this looks pretty nice but I don't understand how or what a tarball is anyways haha

Lol, I was just suggesting this idea for PRL updates a few hours before this thread was created, didn't think I'd see it manifest so soon (not trying to claim credit, just enjoying the coincidence).

just tested this out. booted fine, although a bit slow as you stated. ran both Update PRL and Update Profile successfully. could not get 3g or 4g data working though. powered off without a problem.
thanks for such a smooth way to update PRLs from CM7.
This is awesome and probably has an endless amount of uses. Thanks for your hard work!

I have not done it, but I will try to explain how I understand it working. Basically you are unpacking a rom onto your SD card and then booting into CWM and flashing a script. The script tells the phone to boot the rom on the SD card. So you will boot into EL30, which is the rom on the SD card. You can do whatever you want to accomplish within EL30, and when you are done you simply reboot your phone. Your phone will boot normally into whatever rom it was running before you did anything, because the only way to boot into the EL30 rom on your SD card is by flashing the script in CWM.
So basically, its a rom that sits on your SD card and is never ever used unless you flash the "boot_EL30.zip" script in CWM, and even then it only boots into it once. As soon as you reboot you are back into CM7 or whatever other rom you are running.
With epic-scale gratitude to you for this wtogami!
Only last week had ODIN'd back to stock just simply to Update Profile............this Rocks!

I'm asking this purely out of being curious, but reading the information over on CM7 it says not to mount the SD Card.
Theoretically what would happen if you were to mount the SD Card while running this?

Well, since the entire rom and kernel are read from your SD card, and the SD is automatically unmounted from the phone in order to mount as USB storage... remember the warning about apps on the phone being unable to access the sd card while it is usb-mounted? It would be like suddenly disconnecting the hdd containing your windows installation while the computer is on (maybe not exactly the same, but hopefully you see the conflict that would arise?)

Just out of curiosity, the download page says 171 MB, but the download itself is only 164 MB. Maybe a typo? Or uncompressed size?

Screwed up-Unrecoverable?

I just got my TF300 after selling my 101. Very happy but decide to flash a new rom and hydro looks awesome. Got TWRP installed and found to my dismay I had forgotted the step of moving the zip to internal sd after wiping. And I forgot to make a backup.
For the life of me I cannot get my desktop to recognize the tablet or load drivers, or see it with "adb devices". I am humbly asking for help and realize by getting to excited I probably lost my new tablet. Is there any way to recover from here?
I will be back on first thing the morning. Thank you in advance.

i say try adb using a ubuntu live cd as you don't need to install drivers in linux.

Do you happen to have a link? Just got to work and plugged it into my desktop here and the drivers still did not install correctly.
Are you able to get in to TWRP?
Yes TWRP works fine.

Can you only flash the roms from the internal memory?
Can you not just copy a rom to the micro sd card and flash it? What i mean is just take a micro sd card out of your transformer put it in your phone and download a rom copy it to the micro sd and then put it back in to the transformer and flash via twrp
Everything I have found says there is no support for flashing from card, has to be done from the internal card.

Wow really?? See i haven't rooted/flashed yet because of all these strange little issues that seem to be popping up on this tablet. Have you tried flashing via micro sd yet? I read on another thread that someone did a minute ago.
This thread references flashing from an sd card :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1700441
Check like five or six posts down for the numbered instructions
It says right underneath that TWRP does not support flashing from the sd card. Trying to figure out how to either flash cw over TWRP or get a push through adb. Still not recognizing the pad on my desktop. I have a ubuntu live cd downloading now, looking for instructions on how to do a push with that right now.

Got ya...So CWM does and TWRP doesn't. Ill have to keep that in mind if i do decide to unlock/flash. Well hopefully linux will work for you and you can push everything through ADB. Its pretty universal for instructions on how to push files through terminal. Have you used linux before?

Me and linux never got along much. Got the live cd to at least see the pad. Having issues with permissions though, every time i attempt a push it says insufficent device permissions. Trying to get the usb initialization file fixed. I hate dealing with this.

So did you get it working? I'm still holding off on unlocking until there is a 100% recoverable way like on my other android devices
EDIT : Didnt see your last post, sorry. Awesome! Glad to hear it man!
