The hard "lessons learned" from buying the Droid Charge - Verizon Droid Charge

Let's see:
Lack of run time memory - check
Bloatware from Samsung and Verizon - check, check
Not able to buy many apps due to lack of memory unless you root the phone - check
Phone that should be recalled because of poorly built charge port - check
Verizon telling Google not to sell tethering software, FCC lawsuit, Verizon pays 1.5 million - check while we can't buy the software until a couple of months ago (legally) - check
Charging $299 and no ICS or JB plus we almost didn't get an upgrade period. Buy the OS that's on the phone and don't believe their promises - check, check, check, and check
Loss of unlimited plan for next phone - check
That's enough checks...I''ve learned my lesson many times over, how about you?

The reason for this is...?

PSA... don't buy cheap android phones. Infact, don't buy phones from VZW unless you shop at Costco.

I like my Charge now that I'm able to run Tweaked 3 on it. It was the first 4g smart phone that Samsung put out. It's not perfect but at the time it was better than both the Thunderbolt and the Revolution. Of course all the later phones are better. What do you expect?
Of course it was overpriced. It's an early model. Look at the number of smart phones that have been sold since. A Commodore 64 computer was over $2,000. Look at what you get now for about $500. That's the way of electronics. It's the price we pay for being early adopters.
The only problem I have is terrible data signals at work. But that's a network problem. Verizon is having some trouble trying to implement 4g signal nationwide. That's to be expected. You didn't get ripped off. You just paid the price for being an early adopter.

All I hear is b*tching and moaning. When I bought this phone, it was the best one out. If I had to go back and buy again, I'd still pick this phone.

1. This is on EVERY phone. Have you even been to a Verizon store lately and played with a new one? IT STILL HAS BLOATWARE.
2. This is because most apps are now geared towards much more powerful devices. It's not the end of the world. And if you know about XDA, this shouldn't be a problem.
3. I've seriously never had a problem with this, and even very few on this forum have had an issue. Maybe it's operator error!
4. If this actually affected you, maybe you shouldn't have an android phone. Tethering apps were still very readily available.
5. Again, this was the best device out when it was new. You can't predict the future, so you're taking a gamble when you buy it. Most phones of this era are stuck on GB too. They never made ANY promises.
6. Okay, I have no response to this. It seriously sucks. But that's with EVERY phone, and your thread implies that it's the Charge's fault.

I feel wronged by Verizon because of losing unlimited data too. I was told when I shelled out the $299 for the phone that I would have unlimited data as long as I kept a smart phone on my account. I guess I understand why they've backed out of it. Too many 4g phones using unlimited data plus subsidizing all the new phones would be expensive. But still, they promised me I'd always have unlimited data. If I could get decent signal where I work I could listen to Pandora or stream an occasional Netflix movie and I could use up 2 GB data pretty easy. But as it is I don't use a lot of data. I would if I could. Believe me.
I was checking out the data coverage of the major cellular networks earlier today and it still looks like Verizon is the top dog. The others have quite a bit of catching up to do. I can upgrade on 1/22/12 with the discount. My contract ends in May. We'll see what develops. Since my Charge has become such a cool phone I don't mind using it for a while at all. It's getting a little beat up looking but that awesome Gorilla Glass screen is still in good shape.

It was the best phone at the time
I will say this, even though I listed all of those "issues," unlimited (grand-fathered) LTE made it all worthwhile. I don't regret getting the phone either.
When LTE first came out, it was faster than my home Fios connection. To be able to watch podcasts at work and not worry about the amount of data being used has been awesome. My neighbor cut our Fios line outside and we used the LTE connection as a hotspot for five devices in my house until it was fixed.
But I must admit that until buying this phone, I never would of thought to check the amount of memory utilization on a phone.
I also agree it was the best phone at the time on Verizon.
I can't wait for March and my next phone.

I must admit, your original post was kinda funny...
however, I challenge you to find me one person that has had their smartphone for more than 2 years and is not considering getting a different phone....

I still have my DC. I heard there a was an ICS ROM out for it somewhere. But besides that I've had my USCC Mesmerize for over a year now. We got all kinds of ICS and JB ROMs from the Fascinate on VZW. Being development is good there's been no need to upgrade. Really wish the DC would get more love.

Yeah it's pretty much impossible to look at the new phones without wanting one when the one you have is so seriously under powered. If we weren't able to run a good debloated rom like Tweaked we'd be screwed. The Charge seriously doesn't have enough ram.

hmm, i can upgrade right now, upgrade again tomorrow, upgrade again in a few months and keep my unlimited data. it's your choice if you have to have a new phone and start up a new 2yr contract. i don't have any reason to and will just pick up phones off contract. wait a year or a few months less and they generally drop for $300 or less.

At the time I bought this phone, there were two 4G phones choices, and you had the option of a little more power under the hood with the Thunderbolt, or much better battery life (Like. 3X better. The battery life on the Thunderbolt was HORRID) and a better screen with the Droid Charge.
I wish there were more options with ROMs for this phone, but that's literally my only disappointment with it.
That said, my upgrade isn't far off, and I certainly look forward to a new phone, but c'est la vie. It's served me well for almost two years, now.

Oh, I agree that it's darn good (And is what I'm running).
But I'd love for AOSP to be available on the phone, so we could move to ICS (And JB, and beyond) instead of being stuck with the whims of Samsung who decided to not upgrade the Charge to ICS because they couldn't also port TouchWiz...

I still miss my charge..Verizon has tried sending nexus and s3 and neither has been as stable as my droid charge was..mind you they send refurbished phones so I understand why I can't get a perfect phone..Verizon insurance is good in the aspect of getting unlimited replacements but almost 95% of what they send is ****..at least I still have my unlimited and on a sketchy ass s3..I will prob be selling this phone in the next month or 2 so I can upgrade

That's a bash of the Verizon CLNR program more than it is the phones. When I had to send my Rezound back, it took 3 tries to get a "like new" replacement that was actually like new. The first replacement had a screen that was lifting completely off the phone. The second replacement's USB port died within 2 weeks. Their "100-point check" is a complete joke.

It took me three Charges to get a working one. First one had a software meltdown, and the second one wouldn't accept a charge. Now this one is having issues with data when on Tweaked (I'm running CM 10 so obviously i don't have data now, but the problems started earlier). Got another year before my upgrade...

I bought my charge as CLNR back in 9/2011 ($100 at the time, I think). still running great, thanks to this community.

thubderbolt best 4g Verizon phone?

ok guys i need ur gelp, i only got a 1/2 hour to decide. i found a great deal on a tb but i dont know if i should get it.
are you guys happy with the phone?
would u get a diff 4g phone
how is the batt?
a list of pros n cons would be great
might buy it for 175 used. i got burn with the fascinate and i dont wanna do the same.
tge reason i want a 4g phone is to lock in unlimited 4g before the limited plans get in.
Best 4g lte phone imo. Just make sure to get an extended battery down the road.
Great speeds
OK screen
Great dev support
Not so great battery life on standard battery

Get the damn TB. Put some BAMF on it. Enjoy.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
I can usually get from 8-16 hours from the thunderbolt on the standard battery, depending on use of course. I am sitting in wifi mostly, running das Bamf 1.8.6 right now. Over the weekend, I got 28 hours on a single charge on 3G, but I didn't use it much at all - just emails, a few websites but there was about an hour of pandora in there.
If you're interested in rooting/ROMing, I think the TB is definitely the best choice
I thought the Samsung phone was pretty good. Ofcourse I am not sure if it is worth the extra money, it probably sells for more than TB.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Not saying this cause I own one, thunderbolt hands down. The development community alone should be enough to make it the most appealing LTE device.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I was wondering the same thing. Hardware wise the charge is superior but developer wise the thunderbolt has more support. I bought my tbolt used in like new condition for $350. The price jacked up once the tiered data plans were leaked. At $175 check to make sure the esn is clean and then go for it!

No, hahah sorry kinda stressed out abou it for some reason
I am getting it just in case they say u can't be grandfathered in for the 4g. I don't even have 4g here but 4g is the future and I only pay 10 for unlimited ( I got this crazy promotional deal last November) n I don't wanna lose it when I do get 4g around here.
I have to say I'm impressed with the Thunderbolt, and I'm not an Android guy. Well Im totally an Android guy, now. If I had gotten any other phone available currently, I would have passed it off in a week.
The thunderbolt's quality combined with developer support and the online community just form a smartphone-holy trinity.
I have an iPad 2, iPad, iPhone 4, and Thunderbolt. The short battery life the first three days was a con. Then I started customizing my settings, and about 3 hours after ordering an extended battery I realized "Oh ****, I've been pushing this dude pretty hard for 10 hours."
Needless to say, I only use it when I'm going to be out all night and she's pretty enough that I may not charge it first thing in the morning.
Rooted Thunderbolt on BAMF Sense 3.0 RC 4 with MR2 radio and latest dreamKernel.
By the way, I see you're in Queens. I work in Long Island City and get great 4g speeds. About 25 down and 5 up.

you keep unlimited as long as you keep your plan (3g/4g doesn't make a difference), they have said that as long as you are unlimited with smartphone data, you are good (according to engadget). If you change your base plan in any way, then you will lose the unlimited data.
Thunderbolt is a great phone with minor hiccups stock. Charge has better battery life and a better screen. Thunderbolt has a lot better dev support as do most htc products. Thunderbolt comes with 40gb total memory, not sure about the Charge.
Every Charge I've played with has just dragged. I attribute it to the way Samsung distributed the ram. Their battery life sucks too. I can get 2 days out of my TB. I've used a Charge that regularly loses 40% in 3 hours.

Had an issue that was within 14 days of purchase and they gave me a new in box. Yeah I know people will ***** I screwed verizon but people have a job and should be trained. Since I have had no problems, love the Roms put out and 4g is great.
I can't believe that nobody had mentioned that the.TB is the only verizon phone with voice and simultaneous data thanks to its dual antennas.

I like my TB, but this is my first Android phone so I can't really compare. People have gone over the pros for the phone, and I agree with them. Here are a couple of potential cons. #1 is the phone sound quality. I personally don't find it that great, and to me Verizon iPhone (my wife has one) sounds better. I thought the phone amp was such a basic part that it should never be an issue, but surprisingly it is an issue for me. #2 is the 4g battery drain bug. The good thing is that not everyone has it, and I hope MR2 radio finally fixes it (testing that right now). Other than that it has been a great phone for me, and I am definitely enjoying the dev support, thanks to the devs and people offering help on this forum!

Any DC users think of moving to the Bionic?

I'm thinking about it, is anyone else?
Has anyone of you played with one yet? I hear they have CM7 on it already....
After jumping to several new phones and then being pissed while waiting on a good ROM to come out, I have finally seen the light. I am no longer jumping to a new phone the second it comes out. When I see that there's a good amount of dev being done on a device, then I'll switch. That's right around the time something new comes out... So, I'll still be upgrading every year or so, but about 6 months after the new stuff gets released.
Thankful for the devs that make these phones great!

No, the Charge is a quality device and I will be happy with it until there is a phone launched with ICS on Verizon. The Bionic has no guarantee for timely software updates and comes with too much bloatware for my taste. Honestly, I only bought the Charge to have unlimited 4G data. I would have rather just waited for a device with ICS but Verizon forced my hand.

The Bionic has way too many disadvantages for me starting with the awful looking washed out/grainy pentile screen, the camera sucks etc etc etc

I am spoiled rotten by Super AMOLED and + displays. There is no way I would be happy, content, or even mildly okay with a pentile fuzzy screen. If something comes out that is faster, has more memory, AND has an awesome screen then I may consider it. I don't have to have a screen as good at the Super AMOLED or Super AMOLED+, but they sure have set the bar really high for me.
The screen was the deal breaker for me, no point in having a super fast phone if it looks like s*!#

I've had just about all the smartphones out & only 2 or 3 have been an upgrade
I am on contract but don't mind selling the phone to recoup some of my loss..
Two reasons why I'm thinking of moving away from the DC.
1. Handset speaker volume to low during a call...yes I have it all the way up!
2. No matter what ROM I use, the phone gets laggy after a few days and needs rebooting to clear. Using Zeam as launcher right now too!
Battery life is ok, get about 2 - 2.5 hrs of "screen time" a day
I do love the screen though...except for the over saturated colors....wish there was an app to adjust saturation

Many Fascinate users were upgraded to the Charge for free during a short period of time. I, myself, was one of those users and I am eligible for an upgrade if I were to see something I really liked.
As was pointed out, many other people buy phones off contract. There is a huge used market. Many folks will buy a like-new used phone and turn around and sell it when something bigger/better comes out to recoup some value from it. There are lots of folks that upgrade their phone several times a year for a number of reasons.
I don't upgrade that often, but I've seen others that do.

Yeah, hopefully this week or next. I see no reason why not. T-Mo SII just got it through Kies, so there is def SII love. US SIII just isn't groundbreaking.
Will this be an OTA we have to manually retreive or a Kies update? Im half wondering if Kies will give it to us right now.

Lack of features aka I can't find them cuz they aren't on the home screen or plastered to my face

hey, I'm not here to start anything, I wasted $200 on this thing because it's just not right for my usage. I have to restart it several times a day because it locks up, the stock browser is a joke, I'm forced to use Dolphin which I hate to access my company portal (hey, I didn't use Safari on my iPhone, but Safari did work for that) It won't ring, I never get notifications of text messages or voicemail, I drive over 200 miles a day so having music to listen to is important, and I had to dust off my old iPod for that, I had the TomTom app on my iPhone and since I travel out of my service area regularly I cant trust the navigation that came with the Samsung because it constantly loses GPS signal, so I had to buy a TomTom. I honestly thought my phone was broken so I took it back but the guy in the store said there was nothing wrong with my phone. I used to use Foursquare but the GPS is so off that every time I check in anywhere it says I'm too far away. Oh, and my battery only gives me about three hours off the charger.

Haha! Epic!
But honestly this is taking way too long to get the "official" ICS out... not complaining just an observation.

Wow you're a ****. And I mean that with the most disgusted inflection that word allows for, jackass.
To the other guy; your phone is faulty. It just is. You're the consumer, you payed for a product that isn't delivering. You're going to need to whine and ***** about it, make it a big of enough deal; don't take no for an answer.
They're retail stores, switching out used devices isn't really their forte. (If you had a faulty iPhone you'd still need to make a big deal about it before getting it switched).
You have a great phone, trust me and everyone else here who knows phones. Yours is faulty; the Skyrocket is an incredibly powerful device.

Charge Community dying away?

I keep noticing things here keep getting slower and slower. I'm about to get my income tax return and I plan to get a newer phone. I am planning to keep my Charge to learn a little about more esoteric smart phone usage. I hope something will be going on here in the future. Also I'm wondering if our fearless leader Dwitherell plans to develop on a different phone. If so, which one?

I think the reason the community is dying is there isn't much action anymore, things are pretty much as perfect as the charge is going to get running gingerbread. Once you upgrade you're going to wonder why you hadn't earlier. trust me.

I'm looking for things to keep tweaking on the Charge. I've been trying to mess with screen brightness levels as Dwith knows, I just can't figure out how to get them to register. And I've been keeping my eye out on some neat things. I just have to find the time to try them.
I'm still around, and there are one or two things that I have on the to-do list, but they are pretty minor cleanup sort of things which is why I haven't done much currently.
And in the spirit of full disclosure, I no longer have vzw service - went to T-Mobile as it's decent in my area and I needed to cut down on monthly spending. After my gnex got stolen I managed to sell a bunch of closet-clutter tech stuff and got a note 2.

Sorry to hear about your GNex. I hope you're happy with TMobile. People I know here in the Indy area don't have much luck with it. I'm staying with Verizon and it looks like I'll get a Galaxy S3. I'd love to have a Note 2 but I can't afford it. I'll be seeing you in here hopefully. I've been lurking in the GS3 forum and there are so many choices of roms it's kinda bewildering. I'll find something cool though.
I think I have a couple weeks to wait for my Income tax return so I'll be hanging around here for a while. Yall ain't rid of me just yet.

Seriously considering Note 2 or S3. You've certainly earned our respect with your hard work. What are your thoughts on the Note 2 (sorry if I've missed them elsewhere)?
Still Charged Up
Holding out for an S4
Still running the under appreciated Droid Charge with the appreciated Tweaked 3.2
Man I keep looking at the Note 2 and it's driving me crazy. I may just splurge and go ahead and get it. I saw one on Craigslist for $500 but most of them are $600 or more. I'm not going to give up my unlimited data. If I had a display that size I'd be watching Netflix on it all the time.
Have an ASUS TF300T at work and bought a Nexus 10 for the wife. Both do one helluva job running Netflix... N10 is a great tab but does it ever burn through a charge...
Still Charged Up
well, I just ordered the Motorola Razr M off e-bay - should be getting it by Friday. But I'm still holding on to the Charge (will be giving it to my 7-year old son to replace is 2G iPod Touch).
so I may check back in once in awhile - but I wish you all well.
my reasoning for getting the phone from e-bay as opposed to VZW is b/c although the phone would have been cheaper ($50 compared to $250), VZW slaps on that $30 upgrade fee and forces me to move to the family share plan (which would increase my bill by $30/month). so even after 6 months, I would have paid that $250 amount anyway plus still paying $30/month extra going forward.
I chose the M b/c it appears to best satisfy my needs for a phone with great battery life and still fits in the palm of my hand (and snugly in my pocket). the phone, although has limited developers, already has a few ROMs (including Nitro's Eclipse) and root method (called safestrap).
Dwith, hope you are interested in developing on the razr family (keep in mind that you'd be reaching out to all other Razr's like the Maxx, HD, etc). I can get you a razr pretty cheap.
Personally I very much enjoy the note 2 - though the size of it does make it a hard sell for most (my wife razzes me a bit) I have not felt inconvenienced by it at all. The fact that all I am is a smali-hack wannabe plays well too, as there are a number of touchwiz-only features that keep some (moreso than other phones at least) preferring the modded stock vs. the aosp approach. Plus - touchwiz has come a LONG way since the charge aesthetically, which is definitely a good thing lol
It would be interesting to try and mess with something that isn't samsung, as that's all I've ever had really...

Well....the dark side has finally gotten ahold of me....Ditching the S6 for the iPhon

I've finally gotten tired of dealing with all that I've had to deal with for having an android phone on VZW. I'm tired of having to hack a phone just to get it to work correctly and even then it wasn't a garauntee. Android you were fun while you lasted...been with you since Eclair was new

I thought Android was the darkside . My wife and I went to Best Buy on Friday for new phones. I have always purchased Andriod and she always get's an iPhone. My wife got a 6S which was just made available and I seriously considered getting one also. One thing about iPhones is that though they are locked down they just work and they work great. I have owned 3 Android tablets and 5 phones. It seems like I spend more time tweaking them with rooting and ROMs than using them. My wife never does anything with her phone but install apps and she never have issues. So after about 15 minutes with a patient young sales girl I ended up with the S6 anyway. I was lucky enough to get an OE2 firmware and I already rooted. But I'm seriously considering taking the latest update and get out of the rooting and ROMs hassle. I have about 10 days left to decide if I going to keep or return the S6. My main concern is the battery. I'm retired and I have a landline so I probably don't use my phone as much as most people here but I travel often and don't want to worry about running out of juice. So if the S6 doesn't pan out I'm leaving the darkside for an iPhone.

It may not be inherently an issue with Android, but the issues Android has on verizon are not present on Apple devices.
When Apple agreed to place the iPhone on VZW, Verizon had to give them sole control of their software. The only thing VZW does is the baseband and radio for their networks. Everything else is in Apple's sole control. There is no verizon bloatware, VZW can NOT add or remove any software or features, ie...Samsung pay....
I believe that many of the issues that Android devices suffer from stem directly from verizon putting their noses where they don't belong.
It's taken years for me to get to this point. I've owned numerous Android phones from all of the manufacturers, and it's truly been an enjoyable ride. But the increasingly difficult security coupled with vzw's encroachment into the software side of the house has driven me to get fed up with it all. I just want a phone that works....that doesn't suffer from horrible memory leaks, that has decent battery life, that isn't plagued with cell standby issues, and evidently going to the iPhone is the only reliable way to do that.
I like the S6. But it does have it's issues. The main one for me is battery life. This could be because they decided to shrink the battery down or from software flaws...ie cell standby, memory management, or bluetooth being enabled never allows the phone to go into deep sleep (this is a new one I started experiencing a few weeks ago). Plain and simple....I have owned the S6 since launch day and the battery life is terrible. I have yet to get through a half a day without needing to charge and that is just unacceptable to me. My fiance has had her iphone 6s since the 24th and has only charged it twice. With 3-4 hr on screen time a day and pandora running for about an hour a day.

This is very true. I love Android, but I am sick of having to jump through holes just to get it to be clean. I hate how Verizon butchers everything and Samsung doesn't have the balls to stand up to them. Apple is able to do that. I have no hatred against Android nor iOS. I go by features that fit my requirements and the S6 has the best - Primary being the camera. However, I've noticed my photos have been blurry and the S6 can't decide what to do in low-light and doesn't use flash, which forces me to have people re-pose what should have been candid. I do believe the iPhone 6s will have the better camera (or at least he software to use the camera) and I would like to jump to it. It's just, the lack of IR, private mode (obviously just software), and battery life/fast charging, are big killers for me. Given the smaller battery and worse battery life, charging the damn thing is so slow. At least implement a fast charging feature and I can overlook my laziness of looking for my TV remote and privacy mode.

You do realize that Android / VZW do the exact same thing right? There is nothing that Android offers that Apple doesn't that's actually useful to me...I like widgets and such but I don't need them. And you know what? At least apple doesn't feel it necessary to force a hard warning about volume levels damaging my hearing...

I'm far past the point in my life where I need to be validated by anonymous people on the Internet...chances are...judging by your behavior....I was using Android while you were still in elementary school. My post was meant for those users (who btw outnumber you in this thread) that may be in similar situations or experiences.
Changing my launcher? I don't even do that on android devices....too many bugs most of the time. Use NFC to initiate a Macro? I've done that, and it can make things a little more convenient. But I would rather use it to pay at the store. Something you can't do with the S6 because verizon has the android companies by the balls and just says "we aren't going to allow you have that feature" ...changing led colors? Really? Why even mention that?

That's what I'm saying. I've been doing it for so long it's just become second nature. I miss the OG Droid....that was a tinkerers dream. After years of doing it though, I'd rather spend the time doing things that are more fun. In other words, I don't care about customization options or 3rd party apps anymore. I just want a phone that actually works and works well out of the box, not needing any intervention on my part other than picking it up and turning it on.
This most recent issue with my bluetooth not allowing my phone to sleep was the straw that broke the camels back for me. Could I fix the problem? Probably....do I want to devote the time to it? Nope....not anymore.

Until recently you would have been hard pressed to find a bigger advocate for Android than me. There were always two features that kept me with Samsung...a removable battery and expandable storage. But when you remove those two features and basically make an iPhone clone you are going to lose on the software front. Especially when your hobbled by VZW and all the crap that they do to mess up a pretty good product.

I have an S6 and the battery is a LOT better than I thought it would be. I use my phone CONSTANTLY for work everyday outside with the brightness all the way up and I usually make it home most days with a little juice left. I have a Mophie case on it everyday but rarely have to use it.
There both good operating systems it doesn't have to be one or the other yea a nexus is fun to flash the **** out of it but obviously Apple doing something right too it's more about Verizons locked bootloaders.
