How to install a different kernel? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I am not on 2.2, can I just replace the boot.img in the zip file with the new kernel and flash that from recovery? Or do I need to install the rom as normal, and then installing the kernel from fastboot?

If under 1.14 boot, flash ROM, then I usually boot to make sure its OK then back to recovery an flash kernel zip.

1.11 but either way, gonna try that now.

Just me being careful after multiple failed attempts and almost turning my phone into a nice expensive paperweight, I flash separately.
Boot.img from one .zip
Recovery - install .zip
Then repeat for each one that I want. Getting ready to flash Beastmode v3 kernel and then the cam fix.

No frills is good.
I'm using kernel tuner as I like being able to force second CPU online.

Elementalx kernel on ViperXL question

This kernel is available inside Viper Hub for download. I see many prefer this kernel over Beastmode. My question is- it's a direct download and install inside the Hub.
It offers install option and then prompts an obvious warning about possible bootloops etc. Have any of you installed it from Viper Hub ? I've already made a recovery of my current setup. Just wanting to see if the kernel install goes smoothly. Viper's faq section says it doesn't use ramdisk properties so it can be installed easily.
I'm just making sure before I click the install button and possibly spit up my egg nog if I bootlooped.
Thanks in advance,
Jon

Pretty new to the kernel world but I read up before changing mine.
I installed ElementalX and it installed successfully, rebooted and all was fine. However, when I looked on SetCPU for info, it still showed 1512. When I looked in Viper Hub under CPU, it wouldn't go past 1512 (not using both CPU apps at the same time obviously). It also had custom kernel portions greyed out.
What am I missing here?! I set everything to default when I went through the kernel installer as well with 1.7 as default. Shouldn't I be able to see statistically that the options ElementalX should be providing?
Any education here is appreciated!

no bro you can... I'm not sure though since I haven't used viper in a while and I'm on old hboot... But the problems some people been having with custom kernels is that they use aroma installer..
See what happens is, aroma starts, and gives you options on how much overclock you want, tweaks, S2W, etc etc... It creates a boot.img based on your choices... Lemme download viper, I'll pull my boot.img for you so you can do it through flashgui. Sounds good?
If so, how high you want your max freq to be?

I am on 2.4.0. I installed ElementalX through the Venom Hub. I went through all the installation selections and used default for most (chose not to have s2w) and I rebooted through twrp. When I checked everything, there was no evidence the kernel installed!! Still says Linux kernel, can't clock over 1512 either. I'm on firmware version
2.20.

I went into twrp and flashed the kernel again low and behold, it worked the 2nd time. Not sure why the 2nd time but I'm not complaining. Now I can access all the features of ElementalX.
Time to learn more!!

Can't get to recovery.

So I was going to switch roms on the fly and use flash image gui and found the rom, selected recovery img, and flashed. Success, so i rebooted to recovery. Weird part is, it took me to bootloader. Thinking I hit the wrong thing I moved to recovery and it sends me to fastboot. I assume I did something wrong and have to flash twrp again?

Depends on the Rom. A lot of them you just download Rom to sd card then intall through twrp. No img fastboot needed on a lot of roms when using twrp. What img are u trying to flash?

Maybe you have an init.d folder that is telling the JB ROM to overclock? Could check and delete that first. Otherwise you can double check the md5 of the ROM you're flashing to make sure its not corrupt. Aside from that it might be worthwhile to try a ROM like urdroid which allows you to flash the kernel during the installer.
Dunno man, your problem is a strange one.

Urdroid was another that i tried. It would get to the ROMs boot splash and lock there, but its the only one i recall that even got that far out of the 3 or so that i tried. where would that init.d folder be?
Either the directory of the /sdcard or /. I forget which as I have deleted it. But it should be a folder. Don't delete it if it's by itself.

Really sounds like you are not flashing the boot.img correctly.
Extract the boot.img from the ROM you want to use and install it with:

I've been experiencing the same problem on my HTC Sensation 4G for the past couple years since I've had it. I have 3 HTC Sensations in my family and I've been playing around with all 3 phones during the last year. On my sister and my mom's phones, I'm able to install any rom (Sense-based...ARHD, Elegencia; and AOSP/AOKP-based...CM10, Paranoid Android, etc); however, on my own phone, after dozens of installs, trying all types of different kernels and roms, I was only able to install AOSP/AOKP-based ones. I've been running Touchcream ICS rom for awhile, then Paranoid Android, and currently JB Samsation V5 on my HTC and I love it. I'm really not missing out on anything, but it's just weird Sense-based roms just wouldn't boot. After some researching on the forum and experimenting with others, I've deducted that the reason could be very well my own hardware. :victory:

Are you on the HBoot 1.14? You may need to use gui or adb to flash the kernel.
Some kernels are hboot 1.14 friendly and some are not. It states: hboot 1.14:
The installer includes a method to flash the boot.img on hboot 1.14, however, some people still have difficulties. If it doesn't work, extract boot.img from the zip, reboot to bootloader and do:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Note: you must still run the installer to set options and get configuration files!

I hate to bump, but I ran across this problem as well, and what I found that worked was to do a backup of my phone through TWRP then I flashed the custom kernel, then did a restore. It still read my kernel as ElementalX as my kernel in my about section. I'm not sure if this is a fluke or something, but it seemed to work well for me after I kept getting a bootloop.

[Kernel] Elementalx issues

If anyone is having trouble with the later versions of elementalx I have found that v5.4 has no issues. I don't know what the problem is but anything above that has not worked for me on any sense based ROM. I am on 1.09 hboot and s-on. Currently I am running the miui v5 3.5.3 as my daily driver despite the MMS problem, soon to be fixed on the next update, hopefully

I also remember 5.4 as being a particularly stable release.

I was on 5.4 for about 2 months and then recently upgraded to 6.6 and no problems to speak of.
What do you mean 'does not work for you'? What happens when you install it? I'm assuming you are flashing the boot.img since you are S-On.
I've tried both 6.6 and 6.7 and haven't had any issues.

This only happens on later versions of elemental x? If you flash back to 5.4 does the process stop force closing?
Also, check the message...ls it com.android.process.acore or com.android.process.phone?

Yes flashing back to 5.4 fixes the fc issues. Sorry for the confusion on the message. I've been working long hours lately. It is the second one mentioned above. Is it possible that even though I'm on the earlier hboot that i still need to be s-off because of the newer versions of kernels? Thanks for your time looking in to this issue.
S-off would make no difference with kernels. It would make more sense for your hboot version is causing it. Hard to say for sure without testing though. You did check md5 prior to flashing right?
