Hey all,
I've been searching everywhere in google as well as in XDA with no success. I am trying to do a full Nandroid backup (just like people are advising you to do when changing roms).
I currently have Clockwork 3.0.0 and am Rooted on stock. When I go into recovery, the only thing I have in regards to backup is just "backup" and no "Nandroid Backup" like people are saying all over the forums. Do I have to install something specific? I am puzzled! Is nandroid a method of backing up or the name of a program?
Also, when I backed up using Clockword >> Backup I found its only around 300mb so I assume it doesnt backup your SD content (i.e. pictures and videos + programs) as well? Is there a way to do a FULL image with literally everything?
Any help will be appreciated!
Hi...well backup sounds about right. Don't worry about whether it says nandroid or not. Mind doesn't. Just go ahead and do the backup.
And as for the SD card...well no need to worry there either because the SD contents do not get wiped out anyway, so there's no need for it to be backed up in the sameway.

When I'm looking at the development section, it says that it will "WIPE ALL YOUR DATA". Doesn't this suggest I should also backup my pictures + videos?

The only thing that wipes all your data and sdcard is a fastboot oem unlock, and it sounds like you're already past there. Flashing new roms and choosing "wipe data" in clockwork recovery does not touch your sdcard at all.
It's always a good idea to backup your photos and videos just in case. It only takes a few minutes and better to waste a few minutes than lose a precious irreplaceable video of the kid's first steps.
Nothing should wipe your sdcard other than the fastboot oem unlock, but that doesn't mean it can't be wiped by mistake. I just responded in another thread where the guy accidentally formatted his sdcard. Everything gone.
Better safe than sorry, in my opinion.

It will only backup apps/data on the internal rom space, not on the sdcard; so no, it won't take care of your photos/videos.
Mount the phone via USB, select mount USB storage, then drag and drop the folders with your photos/videos to your computer harddrive.
Camera photos and vids are kept in the /dcim folder if you use stock. Some 3rd party camera apps may put them someplace else.
I usually just make a full copy of the sdcard at one point, then use rsync periodically to keep it current.

So I guess this is one adv. of keeping apps on internal rom space.
Making a copy of the sdcard and resyncing it periodically sounds like a good idea IMO, what programe do you use to resync the sdcard?

Titanium will backup apps and data that are on the sdcard if you put them there with the apps2sd feature. It's smart that way. I'm talking about the apps that store settings and stuff (like Titanium itself, Launcher Pro, ADW, the gym log apps I've used, lots of games, etc) that put user data on the sdcard outside of the protected or apps2sd storage area on the sdcard.
I don't use an app for rsync, I just use the rsync command from the terminal on my Mac.
There's a couple of rsync apps on the Market. Someone mentioned using an app to rsync in one of the threads on here not too long ago. Here's an appbrain link to a search on the term rsync, it only shows two apps.
What if I move the app using Gingerbread feature to "move to sd", will it still know to back them up?
/is that what u meant in the beginning by feature of apps2sd? not sure cause there is an actuall program that does this

Yes, that's what I meant. It also covers just about all of the various apps to the sdcard hacks that various rom makers have implemented over the last year or two; certainly the popular ones like cyanogen and darktremor's versions.
If you get Titanium Pro, pay for the license. It will enable batch restore where all your apps can be restored at once without user intervention, otherwise I believe you have to okay each one individually.

Now, assuming i have already perfomed a backup and now if i move the app2sd, will it know to update it next time?
Then, when i jump to the next ROM, all i have to do is batch restore?

If you move the app to the sd, the restore will put the app back in its location where it was during the backup. Just run a batch backup of all changed applications after moving anything around.
After you flash a new rom, just run a batch restore: apps and data only, usually not a good idea to restore system settings across different roms.
So I've encountered this problem on another ROM where I wasn't able to install any APK files or any other applications in google play. I did some research when it kept telling me I don't have enough space to install the application because of low memory, which I obviously knew all my memory was good enough to install something, and I came across a thread somewhere that said to delete some type of file in the sd card or the system files but I can't remember what and where it is located nor I can't find the thread again. That resolved my issue on my old ROM.
I'm having this same problem with another ROM I'm currently running. Anyone know any solutions?

i can promise you no one will help you with such a vague question. if you were able to search out your answer before, surely you can again. if not please specify what rom you are using, or more accurately post said question in that roms forum so you can get a group of people that are currently using the same rom.
not to come off mean, but you pretty much gave me enough information it compares to a person taking a car to a mechanic and saying 'my car is broke'
after looking at your post history, it seems you are having all kinds of problems with your phone.
My suggestion would be redownload your rom, put it on the sd card, then in 4ext or cwm set it to format all partitions except sd card. and then install your rom, reboot and ill bet your problems go away.

Well, I actually did search this problem I'm having when I first had it a couple weeks ago and I found a solution which was to delete a file in the system or SD card but I can no longer find it, hence the reason why I am asking for help on this.
I was able to install apps or APK files fine before I restored all my SMS and MMS messages but now I can't. I doubt it has anything to do with the ROM because it was working perfectly fine. And even after I restored all the messages, I know I have enough internal storage to install an application.
Now, what your saying is it too backup my ROM then format all partitions except the SD card. Whenever I try to back up a ROM, I don't understand why it takes up so much memory which causes it to have an error when it's in the process of backing up because of no more memory. The android secure folder that's on my SD card gets backed up with the ROM which is a big file and that's what causes it to have an error. That is when I have about 1.2gb free to backup. And people say when you backup ROMs it shouldn't be over a gig.
My ROM is Android Revolution HD 7.0.4

Problem will occur if u are restoring sms messages from a rom that isnt based on sense (like cm7, redemption, etc etc) unless you are using an app to do that like sms restore or gosms, for some reason ive had issues when i had TiBu do that for me.
I personally never backup and restore anything, sucks losing stuff but it is honestly the only way to create a clean environment. Backing up a rom takes up so much because (i could be mistaken) when you do a imaged backup from cwm or 4ext it takes even your cache folders into the backup.

Even when I clear cache?
I used My Backup Pro to backup and restore my messages. Hmm.. maybe I'll just backup my ROM, partition everything except my SD, and flash it again without restoring my messages and see if that helps. Thanks.

dont backup the rom, redownload it
When ever I change roms it deletes all backups, and even deletes clockwork mod recovery. I have no idea what is going on. This didn't happen on my gnex. I have a 2 gig memory card in it. How can I put all backups and recovery on the card? It deletes the rom folder I create to put all the roms in. I have to create the folder every time I change roms. This is anoying as hell. Please help. Thanks

I think your doing something wrong because it shouldn't do that, what ROM hase it done that in? And what at our steps to flashing? As to backups on your sd car when you go to backup there an option to back up to external so card.

I was running jellywiz, and I flashed the executioner. I had to reinstall cwm. And I had to create the roms folder again, the folder where I keep my downloaded roms. As for flashing roms, I do a factory reset, wipe davlik, and cache. It's kind of annoying having to recreate everything. Thanks

Did you flash a 4.2 ROM??? It does that if you don't use an updated recovery.
You are definitely doing something wrong because that is not expected behavior.
A 2GB SD card is ridiculously undersized for backups. A single nandroid or TiBu would likely take all of that space if it even fit. Perhaps it's failing to backup to the external card and defaulting back to internal memory?

I would recommend at least a 16G sdcard. You need that much to stores backups, stock boot rom, custom rom, and you data files to restore. Things like contacts, calendar, etc should always be backed up before you install custom ROM.
CWM is a good boot loader to use as it provides many options and also use something like Titanium backup as your backup manager.
If you do a data reset from the updated recovery will it delete the directory on the internal SDCard where the backup of the stock ROM is?

What recovery are you talking about? If it's cwm touch no it doesn't! I factory reset every time I flash a new ROM (and I'll flash a couple a day sometimes) the only way you'll delete those in recovery is if you manually delete a backup or if you go under the mounts and storage menu and format internal SD card.

So I am talking about the clockworkmod stock rom backup. When I backup it puts the backup in the following location which I will call LocA:
/mnt/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/
This is not my SD card tho. My external SDCard is located at which I will call LocB:
/mnt/extSdCard/
But I also have which I will call LocC:
/sdcard/
I when I go to look at the ‘Phone’ while connected to USB I can see LocA and see the backups, when I use the app SDCard Manager I can go to LocC and I can see that they mirror each other. Why is my stuff duplicated? It is wasting space?
Also when I boot into CWM recovery the menu that says load from SD card actually points to LocA. My fear is that since LocA is really internal memory that a factory reset will delete this and since CWM recovery cant see LocB that I will be locked out. In other words cant load the backup of the mod or the new downloaded CM10.

Okay gotcha, a factory reset does not delete your internal memory. What it deletes is your user apps, settings, etc. That is the same place mine is backed up to and like I said I factory reset every flash. However, if you're really worried about under the backup option in cwm select backup to external SD card.
As for the sd card 0 and SD card. I don't believe there are really two files of everything. I believe it's more just naming for the android system, but maybe someone else can confirm this for me

With that info im confident i wont get stuck in some limbo. During my lunch break ill try to flash CM10 again this time with a factory reset and see if i get further than the spinning logo.
I don't do the cwm touch. For some reason I can't find any roms that I've backed up, So I use the typical cwm. I don't know, maybe it's just me, I'm screwing up somewhere. But everytime I have to reinstall cwm. Thanks for the help

I am FAR from being an expert, but i had to reflash cwm everytime i restarted the phone until i flashed it and from the menu selected prevent stock recovery.
Do I have to do anything special to flash back to Hyperdrive? I'm sick of using all these 4.4.2 roms that have so many issues. I just need to go back to Hyperdrive. It ran so smooth and I do not understand why I switched in the first place anymore.

I would do a normal clean wipe, but add in format sd card to get rid of your 0 folder. Transfer everything you need to off of your internal sd card, and move it back after a flash.
Wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, factory reset, format system, format internal sd card, flash rom.

I'm going to back up everything now, but is this something you've done before? or are you speaking from a theoretical stance?
Also, you say transfer everything off SD Card then you refer to internal SD card. Are you suggesting I flash the internal SD? I dunno about that.

Never done it because I've always been on 4.1.2. I can't speak from experience.
But basically the way 4.1 and 4.3 or above hold files are different. Since you already 4.4, you have a folder in data/media/0 that has all of the data you are currently using. 4.1 uses data/media to hold all of your data.
Theoretically, if you don't use titanium backup to restore your apps and data you shouldn't have any issues, but you will begin to accumulate duplicated data from apps over time because the data will be stored in a completely different location. If you use titanium backup to restore data, you may get app conflicts because you really have the exact same app information in 2 different places.
If you wipe your sd, you're starting on a clean slate and should avoid any conflicts. People constantly report lag, app conflicts, and miscellaneous files that take up all the storage on their device that they can't account for. All of those problems is due to this issue.
Edit: additionally, I would also use this same procedure to move from 4.1 back to 4.3, it has the same issues associated with it.

I don't get what you're saying here, if you wipe your internal SD then you have to have your rom on an external SD card.
Formatting your internal SD card will wipe everything off of it. Once you flash a rom, it'll repopulate all the folders you need in the locations it needs to, but your app data, pictures, and anything else you have on there will be gone. If you back up stuff, I'm just saying backup important stuff you don't want to lose like pictures or music. You can always put them back after the flash.

Then just try to do a normal clean wipe, if you have issues it's likely due to those issues.

Hello everyone
I'm considering installing another Rom but..I need to do factory reset, What I'm worried about is internal sdcard that has Roms and kernels also my music and other files if I factory reset would my internal sdcard be wiped?

you should back up the data on a pc first if it does wipe it, like with my Galaxys2 it has 2gigs of ROM space and 16gigs of a internal SD. when i factory reset the stuff on the internal SD is not deleted, be sure to make a backup of it anyway.

I have the opposite problem. I want to clear an mb886 of all application data. From Philz, I can do a factory wipe and as you stated the application data remains. I want all music, texts, call history, photos, bookmarks and caches etc..., all gone.
My preference is that the flash disk sectors be overwritten with random data, but a re-writing of the file structure (as in re-formatting) would be OK. Yes, I know the flash disk will churn the sectors complicating everything. I have found nothing in the Playstore that I trust to not f'up my phone
For starters, I would like to use Philz to clear my app data. I am reluctant to start unmounting and re-formatting everything in sight. I am concerned I could destroy important stuff like radio, modem configuration and such. I have not been able to find a list of what is stored where in the Android file system.

i could be entirely wrong but i think you should just wipe data plug it into a pc and when the storage comes up delete everything there. as for text messages and such you would have to delete it all yourself or if its stored on the sim card, remove the sim card.
