When ever I change roms it deletes all backups, and even deletes clockwork mod recovery. I have no idea what is going on. This didn't happen on my gnex. I have a 2 gig memory card in it. How can I put all backups and recovery on the card? It deletes the rom folder I create to put all the roms in. I have to create the folder every time I change roms. This is anoying as hell. I think your doing something wrong because it shouldn't do that, what ROM hase it done that in? And what at our steps to flashing? As to backups on your sd car when you go to backup there an option to back up to external so card.

I was running jellywiz, and I flashed the executioner. I had to reinstall cwm. And I had to create the roms folder again, the folder where I keep my downloaded roms. As for flashing roms, I do a factory reset, wipe davlik, and cache. It's kind of annoying having to recreate everything. Thanks

Did you flash a 4.2 ROM??? It does that if you don't use an updated recovery.
You are definitely doing something wrong because that is not expected behavior.
A 2GB SD card is ridiculously undersized for backups. A single nandroid or TiBu would likely take all of that space if it even fit. Perhaps it's failing to backup to the external card and defaulting back to internal memory?

I would recommend at least a 16G sdcard. You need that much to stores backups, stock boot rom, custom rom, and you data files to restore. Things like contacts, calendar, etc should always be backed up before you install custom ROM.
CWM is a good boot loader to use as it provides many options and also use something like Titanium backup as your backup manager.
If you do a data reset from the updated recovery will it delete the directory on the internal SDCard where the backup of the stock ROM is?

What recovery are you talking about? If it's cwm touch no it doesn't! I factory reset every time I flash a new ROM (and I'll flash a couple a day sometimes) the only way you'll delete those in recovery is if you manually delete a backup or if you go under the mounts and storage menu and format internal SD card.

So I am talking about the clockworkmod stock rom backup. When I backup it puts the backup in the following location which I will call LocA:
/mnt/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/
This is not my SD card tho. My external SDCard is located at which I will call LocB:
/mnt/extSdCard/
But I also have which I will call LocC:
/sdcard/
I when I go to look at the ‘Phone’ while connected to USB I can see LocA and see the backups, when I use the app SDCard Manager I can go to LocC and I can see that they mirror each other. Why is my stuff duplicated? It is wasting space?
Also when I boot into CWM recovery the menu that says load from SD card actually points to LocA. My fear is that since LocA is really internal memory that a factory reset will delete this and since CWM recovery cant see LocB that I will be locked out. Okay gotcha, a factory reset does not delete your internal memory. What it deletes is your user apps, settings, etc. That is the same place mine is backed up to and like I said I factory reset every flash. However, if you're really worried about under the backup option in cwm select backup to external SD card.
As for the sd card 0 and SD card. I don't believe there are really two files of everything. I believe it's more just naming for the android system, but maybe someone else can confirm this for me

With that info im confident i wont get stuck in some limbo. During my lunch break ill try to flash CM10 again this time with a factory reset and see if i get further than the spinning logo.
I don't do the cwm touch. For some reason I can't find any roms that I've backed up, So I use the typical cwm. I don't know, maybe it's just me, I'm screwing up somewhere. But everytime I have to reinstall cwm. Thanks for the help

I am FAR from being an expert, but i had to reflash cwm everytime i restarted the phone until i flashed it and from the menu selected prevent stock recovery.

I made a previous clean backup prior to rooting the phone using the Odin method posted by Copperhed. Still running the stock at&t rom.
All was well. I moved the backup file over to my computer hd to free up space on my external sd card. I was tinkering around with different sd cards last night and accidentally formatted my main sd card that I usually use on my phone. No big deal.
I decided to try out some new roms and kernels so I wanted to make a nandroid backup. Instead of using the odin method to install cwm, I downloaded rom manager and flashed clockworkmod recovery.
I formatted the sd card to make sure space wasnt an issue. I clicked on Backup Current ROM, it was given superuser access and the phone rebooted into CWM. I thought this part was automated but it wasnt. Once the phone booted into CWM, it just sat there at the menu system.
No problems, I navigated down to backup and restore, then hit backup. I did some google searching and people have said this version (5.0.2.7) of CWM does not show a progress bar while backing up.
After clicking backup, I get the usual screen of it mounting the card and displaying how much space is free, then saying it is backing up boot image, recovery image, and system.
Takes a long while then just gives me this:

Any idea of why this would be happening? I searched around but did not find any solutions. The only core things I have installed on my phone currently is Titanium Backup Pro and SetCPU. The rest are just day to day apps, todolists, camera, games.

Forgot to mention, after rebooting the phone when I get that error, I check the external sd card and see a backup folder, but there are only about 3 files in there, so it makes sense because it failed making a full backup.
I just now tried "back up to internal sd card" and it started working right away.. showing files and progress bar moving.
I guess this works too, I can still move the backup file over to my pc.. but this kind of worries me.. is CWM not seeing my sd card correctly?

At the end of the backup run (to internal sd card) I get:

When I mentioned formatting the card earlier, I used the phone itself to format it.
I think it has something to do with the variance between the T-Mobile version of CWM we are using on our Skyrockets and what should actually be on the CWM version for the Skyrocket (which still doesn't exist--wtf?! )
Disregard the error message, it's looking for a folder on the T-Mobile version that isn't on the Skyrocket.
If you used the "Backup to Internal SD Card" from CWM you should be fine. I've backed up this way and restored backups without incident.
so if your phone went through a soft brick or something bad happened messing with different roms and such, youre still able to boot into cwm and restore from the backup file that is stored on your internal sd?
i just want to make sure, in the case that we cannot boot from cwm / access internal sd, that we will be able to do so from the external sd.
I don't have a whole lot of faith in our CWM (which was built for a T Mobile variant). I've had a ton of weird messages any time using it and I'm surprised there isn't more talk about it here. I've seen a lot people casually mention the error messages so I know it isn't just me.
I don't know you'd lose the backup if restoring from a soft brick where you'd have to go back to stock first to fix it (never tried it). But I can tell you that if you flash a rom you don't like or doesn't work right you should be able to successfuly restore a backup made in CWM (after wiping data, etc., of course).

All you have to do is install the rom you had when you made the backup for the data going to the advanced options in backup recovery and restore data only and ready

I also tried to do a backup to external SD and get the same "Error while making a backup image of /system"
I searched around and I tried the instruction here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472954 by adding clockworkmod/.hidenandroidprogress in both /sdcard and /sdcard/external_sd/
It's still stuck in "backing up system". I have tried reformatting the SD card and perform error checkin on Windows, but that doesn't fix it.
Has anybody back up to the external SD card with CWM successfully?
And how exactly do we back up to the internal "/sdcard". When I go backup, it would complain I don't have an sdcard if I don't have the external SD card.
[update] I am on ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.6 and I don't see any "backup to internal SD' option. Do I need to update my CWM and how do we do that?

I have backed my phone up with titanium Backup, if I was to lose all my data how would I be able to re apply it? Would I just log in to titanium with my user name and upload everything??

Titanuim backup is an app. If you make a backup through this app it will back everything up into a folder on the SD card.
When you perform a factory reset it will wipe everything except whatever is on the sd card.
So after the wipe, install titanium from the market, and restore all the apps.
if your going to format the sd card, copy over the titanuim backup folder onto your pc or upload to dropbox or similar. Format the sd card, copy the folder back over and restore.

I dont have an sd card in my phone, so if I lost everything then how would I be able to get my details back on my phone?
Can I not just copy everything and put in in a folder on my computer, if then I lost all data I could then transfer it back to my phone from my computer

it doesnt matter if you dont have external sd (One S doesnt anyway) it will be backed up to the internal SD.
All you have to do is plug in USB and tranfer from old phone > PC > New phone

It is best to do a nandroidbackup. You can make a nandroidbackup in the recovery menu. When you have made this backup, you have copied everything on the phone as it was when you started the first time. To make a nandroidbackup you must have CWM (clockworkmod).

To back up full rom..like everything,as the post says above you would boot into recovery and back it up that way at the moment due to not having official clockworkmod..dont know if it is yet,but you can do that way.itll save everything just as you left it.
titanium back up will save apps and there data..
and can save the way you have saved your settings etc.
itll save your profile without needing to login.then click on options..then batch if its apps.or if its system data and apps choose that option.
beware though if you got 100 apps youll be there for a good ten minutes reinstalling lol.
(note--asop isnt around yet fully but dont restore system data from sense roms to asop and vice versa itll just mess your system up)
your external storage( will never be touched with relation to flashing roms etc.the only way it can happen is if your a complete numpty and select that option yourself.
best way to be honest is just play around with titanium youll get the hang of it

Thanks for your patience, when I go in to Rom Manager I click on backup current rom, it tells me the date and time, I then click ok, the phone then restarts, when I look in manage and restore backups it's just blank??? I am using Rom Manager v5.0.0.6, is it better using a premium Rom Manager as I also have rom toolbox, when I click backup on this one it says that I must upgrade to be able to do this..

No mate far as im aware rom manager isnt supporting the s yet,the cwm had issues,youll need to switch off and boot into bootloader then choose recovery from there then into cwm then back it up.
switch off,hold volume then power till bootloader rocks up..choose recovery then your in clockworkmod then back up
+1 to that !! also, if you have root (i assume you do with having TiBackup) you can use quickboot - available on market for free, it will allow you to boot into bootloader, recovery, without having to do the button combo

No, just turned the phone off, turned back on with vol down, scroll down to recovery then pressed the power button and the phone just turns on,

Have installed quickboot, when I click on bootloader it takes me to the screen, I then click recovery and.....the phone just starts, I tried the other way in quickboot..pressed the recovery button and .......the phone just starts..arrhhh
did you flash the custom recovery ?
Sounds to me that your install of cwm went wrong? Although how are you rooted if it did...strange daft question inbound...you followed all the steps?

CWM shows my backups.. starts restoring my backups.. then gives me an error about E:..
Trying to recall for sure.. I think it said sd-ext is an unrecognizable format, and wouldn't restore anything.
It would take a new Rom ZIP from the external SD card and install it just fine, just not the backups I had made. I can access the data just fine..
Any suggestions on exactly what the problem is and how to fix it?

Check your SD card, you should have folder called "clockworkmod" inside find folder "backup". Inside this folder are all rom backups that you made. I think your backups got corrupted. Once you are in the folder try renaming your backups(change the name of the folder) like 2012-02-original or 2012-04-22.MIUI, 2012-04-29.CM7(just samples you can use your own labeling but try to keep same format.) Hope this helps, if not format SD card and start all over again. In the future make sure when you have everything set on your SD card to make a backup to your PC.

that's pretty much all you can do, other then that report exactly what the error said, i assume that these were all on the same recovery, how much space is on your sdcard. Was there an error when the backup finished? What are the files on your Clockwork Mod Folder list the files with on one of your backups...
mine has these folders.
boot img
cache.ext3.tar
data.ext3.tar
nandroid.md5
recovery.img
system.ext4.tar
any of those in there? my backup is something like 520mb...

Well happened to me before all i did was wipe all data, cache, and dalvik before i restored and it worked for me

Ahh, I just assumed that he would've done this prior to trying to restore, That is probably the issue. I've seen it before, I think on my MyTouch 3G.
I flashed a 4.2 ROM. PA 3.10 to be exact. And it did the thing with the 0 and legacy folders it needed to do for the multi-user feature. I didn't like it and I'm back on 4.1. My ROM is really confused because the folder structure is still on 4.2. Anyway to get the folder directory back to normal 4.1?
I thought I put this in Q&A, I do apologize. If a mod comes along could you move it?

I recently went through the same thing. There may be a better way, but I formatted the Internal SD card through TWRP and then ran my backup app restore and everything is back to normal. Make sure you copy anything on your Internal SD that you want to save before doing the format...

No problem, glad it worked. I didn't have to change anything with the ROM I was on, I just needed to restore my apps since some of were on the Internal SD. I had also read that you could keep the Internal SD and delete the 0 folder, but I got an error every time I tried deleting it.

Having never gotten the rom I was using 100% working I, stupidly, did not set up a full backup. Long story short, things went sour, I can't boot into my rom and I'm hoping I can get some backup help.
What I've done:
Tried everything I can think of to get the rom working
Copied the sd card to my pc
What I would like to do:
Somehow get my installed apps (and hopefully app settings) copied back onto a clean install of the same rom.
There is not enough room to do a nandroid backup 2g free. Is there anything else I can do/can I use the copied sd card as part of a restore?

You can do a nandroid of /data in recovery. But if the problem is in that partition, restoring it will just put you back where you are now.
Does a /data backup do everything I need? I assumed android_secure was required and that's a whole 3 GBs too big.
android_secure is where the apps are stored when you move them to your sdcard. But if you can't back that up, it's academic. /data might save some of your app settings and files.

Just curious why there would be an android_secure if this phone has only internal storage?

Because it partitions the storage (stupidly).
If I copy android secure, could I just put it back after a restore, or would that mess with things? Alternately, if there clear files I could delete to make room for the nandroid of android.secure I could do that. Nearly all of my apps are in there, meaning the data backup is a bandaid on a pretty huge cut.
