Formatting - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys, in the recovery, I was wondering If I can do the format options in the mount and storage section, like format /sdcard and so on. I wanted to do like a fresh install when I move from one ROM to another because when I last changed ROMs, in the sdcard, I saw the same folders there from the apps I previously used which should be gone. If I can, which options should I choose?

if u format the sdcard u will lose everything in it...

Hi
Yes, Format everything for a fresh install but if ur worried about those files from previous ROMs then just cut and paste those files to a folder on ur computer so u always have them in case u find out later u wanted them... like for a game level, an album cover... etc.
But always keep ur titanium backup files, ur recovery files, ur android files, ur dcim(pictures) etc files on the SD card since they are important/ needed.
There is also a zip file called "format all" on the xda section that does it all with one click. I use it after factory reset, wipe cache and wipe Dalvik files... it formats all the stuff under mounts & storage except SD card.
Good luck...and always make a backup of working ROM.... just in case....

[Q] How do I safely clean the internal sd card?

Hi all,
How do I clean my internal sd card? I recently rerooted. I followed the steps where it is said to delete Dalvic cache 3 times etc etc before flashing the new rom.
I still have old apps/folders on my internal sd card before I rerooted. I backed up my stock rom before I rerooted.
I am now on this rom ([ROM][12-7]TPC v3 2.3.5 | Da_G OC Kernel | IMG Flash | ATT | Rogers |)...... I also backed this rom up and applications.
I have 9.1 GB with 2.2 GB free. I'm running a bit low in my opinion because I still do not have any music, movies, or pictures on my phone. I do however have about 100 apps, 10 of which are HD games. Is the 9.1 GB reasonable?
I do see some old apps on the sd card though. Is there a quick way to delete them all or do I need to go down 1 by 1 and check every crevice of my internal card?
I'm not that concerned about it, since I will eventually get a 32 gig external sd card, but I want my phone as clean and efficient as possible.
Once again,
thanks for everyone's help.

/data and /cache and /dalvik cache have nothing to do at all with the sdcard, internal or external.
Settings, mounts and storage (can't remember exact wording) unmount and format USB storage
That will wipe everything off the internal SD.

k so once i format the sd card storage, it will clean everything out and then I can just use rom toolbox and restore my latest backup with the apps I actually want on it?
thanks.
Once u format ur internal ur going to lose everything. Make sure to copy ur back up to ur external or a PC. That's if you have ur back up in internal. Do titanium back so you will have ur apps and system data.

This! Titanium is the way to go.
Once you have your backup safely on a PC, you can also do it by going in to Settings/Privacy/Factory Data Reset, and if you check Format USB Storage it will clear everything off your phone (not sure if you're looking to do that--that would be all your pictures/videos/music--but these files can be large, especially video files)
I backed up my apps and settings, I do not have an external sd card though. When I connected my phone to the computer over wifi, using that aires application (forgot name). I copied the backup folder and pasted it on my computer. It stopped around 20% of the way through because I guess the phone was using some files.
Is there a way to copy to pc from internal sd card? Or should I just go out and buy the external sd card? thanks
I used rom toolbox pro to backup. Some reason I get errors with the lite version that came with the Da_g rom.
So my main goal should be copying that Backup_data folder that was created from the app and reloading that up after I delete the stuff in the internal storage.

Kies is the name of the program (I haven't used it much personally).
I'm not familiar with Rom Toolbox, but assuming that it works the same as Titanium it should be placing your backup on your usb storage, which you can access just by plugging in to pc and opening the drive.
I just wiped my sd card and usb storage and restored everything with the Titanium and cwm folders that I placed on my mac (screen shot attached), and then brought back on to my phone when I was ready.
Yes, when I tried backing up the back up folder rom toolbox mde for me, my computer stopped copying the folder around 20% of the way and gave me an error message (The destination you have specified does not exist, It might be offline network location or an empty CD or DVD drive. Check the location and try again. .comgameloft.android.GAND.GLoftSD3H.apk, type: apk, size 4.13 mb, Date modified: 2/8/2012 11:20 pm.). It gave me the choice to try again, skip, or cancel (I just cancelled the entire thing).

Have you tried selecting the backup on your phone & then just copying it to a file on your p.c.? Just make a file on your desk top
If you use kies you can "see" the SD card on your phone from your p.c. Once you have an external card it comes in handy since you can see both

EDIT: Oh, you're saying Kies froze up trying to back it up. I'm saying don't use Kies, just copy the folder to your desktop.
Yea for some reason I can't see the root files on my phone. I googled this android commander program that lets you connect your phone to your pc enabling you to see all the hidden files. That samsung program is more like just syncing contacts type of thing. I was even able to copy my backs to my pc in like 3 mins. Deleting my internal sd card now.

This is the correct answer.
But, I'd also point out that you don't have to format the SD card to switch ROM's. You can keep all your data on the SD card, flash a new ROM, and all your data will be there waiting for you. There's usually no advantage to formatting the SD card unless you are having problems with it.

Its always good to back up, but when flashing a ROM the sdcard doesn't get formatted by deafault and doesn't need to be.

Better do a Complete backup.. And copy back only essential stuff.. Who knows if something important is still there like a Nandroid backup as it will be in sdcard only

CM stores dalvik cache for all system apps in /cache/dalvik-cache instead of /data/dalvik-cache.
Flash mounts2sd.zip from this thread (the first one).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1932874
After rebooting, open terminal emulator and type
su
m2sd cmdalvik enable
m2sd rmount enable
m2sd apps disable
Now reboot and it'll be moved

if you want to move dalvik cache for more internal space then i dont recommend you on doing that..it slows the phone doen (unless you have class 6/10 memory card)..i suggest you use int2xt+ ...for me its the best out there!!

I'll pm you!
or i will just put it here only..
so basically what it does is that it mounts /sd-ext to /data and leaves application data in internal storage for speed..
im assuming you already know about ext partition and you have partitioned your sd card!! (if you haven't then tell me)
if you want to implement int2ext+ in a rom then download the script from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1716124
extract it..now download the zip of rom you want to use and make a copy of it somwhere else in your hard disk and open it through winrar..remember do not extract it..navigate to /system/etc/int.d in winrar only and delete all everything in the folder and drag and drop the file you extracted from int2xt+ zip..it will do some working and when its finished just close it...flash this modified zip..and you will see internal memory increased in storage (150mb+the size of ext partition u have made)
EDIT:
It may happen that your rom doesn't boot ..so you make another copy of the original rom and repeat the whole procedure except that dont delete anything in init.d folder..
for example i deleted all files from init.d in cm9.1 build#9 (i dont know what will happen if i dont) and it works..i remember that i deleted all files in evervolv but it didnt boot so i copied without deleting and it booted perfectly!!
i m switch to cm9 build8 rom from jaggy,,,so need sum info.
>use tethering pc to mobile...so i can use my pc internet in my mobile???where is this option??
>i read sumwhere that titanium bckup must be avoided ...so wt i use now for my bckp and restore???

Oh switching sd cards can be pain in the ass.. Anyway make a partition on ur new sd card (same partition u made on ur old card) make a nandroid backup with your old sd card inserted in mobile.. This makes backup of your sd-ext partition (of course ).. Now copy the whole folder (clockworkmod folder if u are using Cwm and TWRP folder if u are using touch recovery) to your new sd card using your pc or lappy.. Be sure that your phone is switched off or in recovery mode while you are switching cards.. Now when you have copied the backup(s) to your new sd card, insert it in your phone and restore sd-ext part only.. If that doesn't work then full wipe your phone and do a full restore!! Rest of the things in your memory card you will have to copy manually through pc or you can dump your data in cloud and download when new sd card inserted..!

2.any backup u make from gingerbread roms will be useless.. FCs will occur due to compatibility problems.. You will have to install all apps again
3.for contact syncing fb apps itself supports it.. But I use fb contact sync app for it.. It's awesome if you want their pics to be shown in conyacts.. If you want to sync birthdays you can add your fb calender to Google calendar (if you don’t know how to do dat tell me) your Google calendar is automatically synced with ics stock calendar.
4. Now that's atrange.. Never happened with me...

N00b SD card question

I know that this is a noob question and I feel semi-embarrassed for asking since I've been around so long, but better safe than sorry.
I plan on installing 4.2 soon, so I will be starting fresh with all of the wipes. My SD card is getting rather cluttered. Is it safe to just delete EVERYTHING (aside from the rom zip in question and a backup, of course) without any issues? I don't care about losing game data and what not. I'm assuming/hoping that flashing the rom will put back whatever is needed.
If there is anything in particular I should leave on the SD, please let me know.
Thanks for the input!
Every Sunday I format my sdcard
I like it to be light.. I like to enter recovery and mount SD, format my card in windows. Then when its done I simply drag a rom back on there and flash it.. Its usually fast as sh|t
The rom you flash will install all the necessary files you need. Good luck mike!

Thanks for the fast reply!
Since you don't intend to keep any app data, you can basically delete everything (aside from the ROM zip, TWRP backup, and Titanium folder). Any folders needed by Android will be created automatically. Same thing with any apps you re-install.

Deleted Everything off my Moto g.... Now What?

Hi all, i played around with my Moto G a while back, got the bootloader unlocked, put a new ROM on. Did a backup which i wanted to delete but couldnt... everytime i did a fresh install it was still there eating my memory so i wiped everything off my phone using TWRP (internal the lot!) now ive got nothing on my phone, no operating system nothing.
anybody got a tutorial to get it back up and running again? or at least some ideas on how to dispose of it haha.
thanks in advance.
*EDIT*
This post can be deleted now thanks! I have resolved this matter very easily with a very imaginative way that i never thought of. i couldnt reinstall another rom as my computer wouldnt reconise my phone in ADB. but using this method below i was able to very easily...

Alternate Method : Noob Friendly.
First of all backup your sd card (i.e data/media)
Flash Philz Touch 6.26.6 Recovery
Hope you have OTG cable and a pendrive.
Copy the rom which you want to install on pendrive. Attach pendrive through OTG.
(backup your current rom on usbdisk. For this goto Backup and Storage. Find option backup on storage/usbdisk )
Now, select Wipe Data/Factory Reset. It will ask Wipe to install new rom,tap on it. Say Yes.
After that goto Mounts and Storage and format /data and /data/media (/sdcard). Say Yes.
Done.
Now flash your favorite custom rom.
Select the option install from sdcard. Then select usbdisk. Select your custom rom and install it
*END QUOTE*
so hats off to "amit.lohar"
For future:
If delete info of internal storage, you can recover it with DiskDigger. Root required.
