I know that this is a noob question and I feel semi-embarrassed for asking since I've been around so long, but better safe than sorry.
I plan on installing 4.2 soon, so I will be starting fresh with all of the wipes. My SD card is getting rather cluttered. Is it safe to just delete EVERYTHING (aside from the rom zip in question and a backup, of course) without any issues? I don't care about losing game data and what not. I'm assuming/hoping that flashing the rom will put back whatever is needed.
If there is anything in particular I should leave on the SD, please let me know.
Thanks for the input!
Every Sunday I format my sdcard
I like it to be light.. I like to enter recovery and mount SD, format my card in windows. Then when its done I simply drag a rom back on there and flash it.. Its usually fast as sh|t
The rom you flash will install all the necessary files you need. Good luck mike!

Since you don't intend to keep any app data, you can basically delete everything (aside from the ROM zip, TWRP backup, and Titanium folder). Any folders needed by Android will be created automatically. Same thing with any apps you re-install.

okay, so i've found myself in a bit of a pickle. Recently I've been running the CM7 nightly's, but today I tried out the RoyalGinger rom and I believe it either corrupted my SD card or it's blocking my SD card from being used/read.
Tried several times to reformat it but each time it said 'checking SD card', but the weird thing is I have an active wireless connection, but I'm not getting texts. I can download from market, get on Facebook, etc, but my texts won't come in until I reboot the phone. A few times I booted it up and it wouldn't allow me to even see my homescreen because it'd pop up with EVERY app force closing (including google services, framework, etc), I was able to get back to my homescreen by clearing by Dalvik Cache luckily, however I'm still unable to do most anything. I went in to wipe/restore but it says cannot find SD card, directory invalid, cannot mount, etc.
Is there a way to reformat my SD card through terminal? If so could I get the code procedure for it? or anyone have any ideas other than picking up a new micro (which isn't a big deal but I'm strapped on money til Friday) but i'd still prefer to know that it's JUST my SD card and not my phone memory. Anyone? Anyone? Beuler? Beuler? Thanks in advance. I'm really sorry if I posted this in the wrong section, but c'mon, everyone gets one.
Ok so do u have a stock backup rom? Ide say go to rom manager and go to recovery and whipe etc.. Then install that stock back on it.....And can ur sd card even read at all? Just get any.file manager and check your sd.

I think I have a backup rom of CM6, but not an actual android stock rom. It won't allow me because it says 'must have an SD card inserted' then it says must have clockwork mod recovery installed, which I do, the current version. Now that it says that I'm afraid to boot my phone into recovery, and I can't really tell if my SD card will read. I was able to use my file manager and the entire SD folder is blank.
ten minutes later: still boots into recovery, none of my backups are available on it. I was thinking about downloading a rom from the phone and trying that way, but I don't know if it'd save to the (apparently unreadable) SD card.
Ok try this...... Find out what recovery you use 3.0.0.5 or the normal 2.5.1.4 for froyo then download a rom thats the same recovery as the one u have on it right now...... If its the same as your cyanogenmod 6 then install that from the recovery manually!!!
if its not then download a rom that is and make sure you use a file manager to see if the download sticks in your sdcard. And if it doesnt stick then......your problem sir might be a corrupted sdcard, or a phone that cant read your sd.
Hope its not either or, so give it a shot.....
And ur supposed to have a stock backup as soon as you root and switch roms man Lol makes life easier

It sounds like he doesn't have access to his sdcard. It doesn't matter how many backups you make if that's the case...
If you happen to have a sdcard reader or a microsd usb adapter you could format it in windows, copy the files you need, and start again. Also did you try connecting to your pc and seeing if it's readable that way? You can format the card if your pc recognizes it. If you have adb set up you can push the recovery image to the phone without a sdcard. But once again without a working sdcard you won't be able to flash a new rom.
Hey guys I'm pretty sure it's just my SD card. I tried saving an image, just to test it and it says 'an SD card is required to download images.bin', so I'm HOPING it's just my SD Card, however my notifications are working properly so I can at least deal with it til friday, if it IS my SD card reader in the phone, well... I have a plan for that, however due to already technically breaking that I shouldn't go into it. Thanks to you guys for taking the time to post and if you know anything else that might help me I'd gladly accept it.

Hi, I have a reader on my laptop but not the adapter, so I can't tell and yes, you were right, I can't see any of my backups (which I have my stock, then cm6 and cm7) so I either need to find an adapter or get a new SD card. luckily I pulled all of my camera images off my phone last night when I put the new rom .zip on the phone sd, so I'm not really worried about 'losing' anything as long as I get my phone working back in proper condition.
Well that happened to me before as well.. All i did was replace sd cards lets the phone do its thing flash a different rom like CM6 or CM7 and then once replaced i got the adapter for my old sd card reformatted through windows and put it right back in and it worked.. So try that?
Ill have to. Thanks a lot guys I do appreciate any comments and suggestions and ill be picking up a new sd later thia week to fix it but can amyone recommend a good brand sd to pick up? the apparently failed one was a samsung 8gb

Something similar happened to me. Your SD card likely has a bad or corrupted file. I used Win7 to copy over what I could to a folder in my PC. The Win7 automatically refused to copy over the corrupted files while carrying over everything else. In XP, your file transfer stops and you have to try again to ensure you have everything that's not corrupted transferred over.
After copying, I just went ahead and formatted the SD to FAT32, transferred everything back, installed on my phone, and voila.
Go into recovery and partition the card. You'll lose everything on it but it should be useable after that

Hello XDA Developers,
First off let me say thank you for all the information always found on your forums, however I've run into a snag with my phone (HTC EVO Shift 4g) and need some help. I was doing a factory reset of my device using the tool in the Clockwork Mod Recovery (v5.0.2.0) and I went to wipe some additional data off my SD card, and inadvertently chose to format the /system, and pretty much every directory in the storage menu, which I later realized I probably shouldn't have done as now I can't get my phone to boot. Where the snag falls into here, I had made a backup of all my data on my SD card but have misplaced my full backup made through the clockwork mod. When I try booting my phone it simply comes up with the white boot screen with the "htc" logo in green. I have tried about everything I could possibly think of to get my shift working again, since it won't fully boot, the only option I've been able to try have been trying to get a ROM to install from a .zip, but I keep running into errors, did I manage to wipe out some sort of critical data when I did those formats?? Any help you guys can offer me will be GREATLY appreciated!!! Thank you in advance for your expertise and input on this.
NOTE: I have tried to download one of the STOCK RUU's that you guys have posted, I have yet to find one that will actually download or resolve my issue!
Sounds like you wiped and formatted everything.. Including your sd card.
Download a ROM to your pc - In clockwork go to mounts and storage - plug your phone into your pc and select mount usb. Transfer the ROM onto your sd card, unmounted your sd, wipe then flash.
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk
Alright man all that happened was when you hit format system, you wiped the ROM from the phone, so download any ROM of choice go into recovery then mount as a storage device and transfer the ROM to the SD card, unmount then format system, data, cache and dalvik cache and flash the ROM and you will be fine

Ok but does anyone have a stock RUU Rom I can download to do this? I'd kind of like to revert to stock in this process and I can't find one that works properly, thanks!

Are you asking how to get CM10 working correctly? Or just how to get your TF101 working fine again? If the former, I can't really help you there, and that's just going to be difficult because CM10 is still in development, so there could be a host of problems. If you just want to get it working again, I would suggest finding a different (preferably STABLE) ROM and flashing it onto your device. That should work.
Also, if you're flashing a completely different ROM onto your device (not an upgrade or root, or whatever else,) I would go by the general rule of ALWAYS wipe your system, dalvik cache, normal cache, and if you're flashing files from an SD card, be sure to wipe your internal memory too. This will ensure that none of your previous files conflict with the new ones.
This happened to me when i ran one of the JB roms and then tried to nandroid back to revolver. By default the mounting for /data/media/ which is the internal memory is supposed to be at /sdcard/, but for some reason it got switched to /storage/sdcard0/. Nandroiding back to Revolver didn't help as the change was to something before the rom, so even twrp was acting funny because the mountings were present there also.
After some confusion i flashed superwipe lite and all was well. I ran lite since its supposed to leave /data/media/ alone, while reparitioning the rest of the system, so i thought that at some point its got to change the mountings back to the way it was supposed to be in HC and ICS.
Now if i could only remember where those mountings were originally saved i can just go in there and edit the file directly if this happens again.

What recovery manager are you using? And are you loading your flash packages on a MicroSD or the internal memory?
If you are on jb and want to restore an ics rom you cant...from jb to ics yoj couldnt... but from ics to jb yes

Here's what I would suggest (assuming you have a microSD card):
Load your ROM of choice onto a microSD card and Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP) to your internal memory. Reboot into recovery and flash the TWRP .zip to install it, and then reboot back into recovery. After that, go to "Wipe" and run Wipe Cache, Wipe Dalvik Cache, Factory Reset, and System, and DO NOT REBOOT Then go back and choose "Install" from the menu and make sure you're viewing "using external SD," and there should be your ROM .zip. Flash it and reboot.
Let me know what happens or if you have any questions.

Alright, well, I'm not sure why your touch would't be working if you're using a TF101, but here's my last idea: Go here and do this. Make sure to read it carefully, as that basically just wipes your drive COMPLETELY and reinstalls the STOCK firmware. If you can't figure out how to do that, then I have no idea how else I can help you. I'm sorry.

Can you not just download a file manager app from the Play Store? There's several out there...
After installing a few custom roms and wiping data i seem to have multiple roots
Looking at the phone- on my desktop I notice the following-
My computer/ SCH-I535/Phone/0/0/0/0/0
Each "0" has a complete set of files like the previous folder
Is this normal or do I have to reformat the phone somehow
Thanks for any advice
Delete any duplicate files/folders. You must keep 1 of the 0 folders though. The reason this happened is because you're recovery is out of date. Update your recovery to the latest version and you'll be fine from here on out. 4.2 adds multiple users which partions your storage to allow for this, the multiple 0 folders happen because you're old recovery is not aware of this partioning, so it just adds another folder for each 4.2 rom flashed.

Thanks. Where can I find the update and do I run it the same way is run a rom zip ?
Assuming your running one of the big 2 recoveries...for twrp: download goo manager from the playstore and in the options choose install open script recovery. For cwm: download rom manager from the playstore and install custom recovery. Done!
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk HD
I have clockwork 6 0 1 2
Use rom manager and update it. I use twrp so I'm not sure what version cwm is running now, but I know it's higher than what you have. The app will download the current version (regular or touch) and flash it for you. Doesn't get any easier.
Just got the rom mgr and ran the file. Yes it was easy. Thanks
One last question- the next I install a new Rom , what's the best way to clean up the system

Format.... all. That's what I did. Just remove your sd card and make sure EVERYTHING is backed up. You will lose EVERYTHING!

Here's what I learned after updating the CW recovery.
There's no format all and I was a bit hesitant to format all the choices. I read somewhere that you could lose the root files. I didn't want to go through that again.
On the first go round I formatted the " system", then I installed the rom. After install the extra "0" folders were still there. On the next try I formatted the internal SD card, that was it. All the extra "0" folders were gone
Thanks guys for the help!!
OK... I searched on this one.. and probably someone will point me RIGHT to the thread as soon as I post this...
Keep in mind that I am a NOOOOOOOb.... and probably don't belong in here... but hey.... everybody has to learn
so... I downloaded and flashed the SD/ Internal Memory swap... and was thinking of flashing an updated ROM to play with some more... my question is... do I copy the ROM zip to my SD card which NOW reads as my internal storage? OR do I copy it to the Internal Storage because that now shows as my SD card??
Or... should I scrap the whole thing, and flash it back to nothing, fresh install on ROM, and then reflash the SD card / Internal storage swap?
Thx for any help
I'm assuming you flashed the swap that @InkSlinger420 graciously provided for us? If so, it's my understanding that the recovery doesn't recognize the swap, just the rom. So if you put it on internal (which WAS external) when you go into recovery it'll be external again, if that makes sense. I would say put the rom on your now internal, then go into recovery and see where it is placed. Either way, recovery will flash it regardless of where it is. Just make sure (and always make sure) you have a backup of what you have now just in case. I can't stress that enough. I working backup is critical when doing the modding game! Also, are you using Philz recovery? If so, for the love of pete, backup your efs partition. Also very, VERY, important!

Philz recovery ... no... I guess I should back up? It's kind of a spare phone that I have been tinkering with just to try and learn... so I figured worst case scenario, I could reformat, and start fresh I'm probably wrong about that too?
Anyway, I went ahead and loaded the swap that yes @InkSlinger420 very graciously gave out.... so... here is what happened...
I loaded the new ROM onto the SD card (which showed as internal memory) Flashed it... and it ran perfect, it UNDID the Swap, so I had to reflash that file as well... now we are back to where we were, with a new ROM, and no backup maybe I will go check out Philz...
Philz is wise as @njstein had said backs up your efs partition that holds all the identifiers for your device to receive service and such.and, yes, if you flash a new ROM, you will need to reflash the swap zip, but as I have been messing with it,it still keeps your apps and such so after you flash ROM,gapps, and swap, your app data will still be there for apps/games..just need to re get them from play store manually or automatically, also may want to get a good cleaner for your device such as SD maid or clean master to help keep up with removing residual leftovers as well..
