First of all this type questions belongs to Q'nA board. As now we are having Q'nA board kindly use it for posting any questions.
As u said u have flashed stock ICS upon ur stock GB. Stock roms (odin flashable packages) comes with stock recovery software. When u flash whole stock rom package it also replace ur recovery and I think that's y after flash u see different recovery software. Simply just flash any CWM package using odin. (U can find collection of adam in dev section).
About flashing kernels. Most of all kernels available for our device are provided in CWM flashable zips by their devs. Simply place zip on ur sd card. Boot in recovery and select install zip. Navigate to zip file and flash it. Kernel will be flashed.

cognition perception 8

Hello, I had a question about flashing a new rom . I wanted to update my cognition from 2.3.6b to the latest one but someone told me to do perception build 8. So I downloaded both of them and I was also told to rom to stock before doing it. My question is if I do flash to stock wouldn't I have to really root my phone and get froyo back on it? Before flashing either one of these and which one do u recommend for the captivate?
thank you
the rom include froyo, yes you would have to root again
I normally do a master clear in Odin after I flash stock so you'll need to root it again.
The best option is to copy your update zip file ( from CWM ) to you comp or external card before you flash to stock and then put it back after you flash to stock. Three button recovery combo, reinstall packages and you are good to go to flash your new rom.
My update.zip is only 1.7mb is that right? So flash to stock get cwm and the 3 button recovery thing that's not download mode is it?

I'm having a hard time comprehending posts 1 & 2, but here we go:
It is strongly recommended you flash back to stock JF6 before flashing a new ROM. Cognition and Perception are both FroYo ROMs...so you don't "get it back", whatever that means.
If you currently have ROM Manager installed on your phone, open up the app and select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". This should invoke a small download of a file named "update.zip" that gets stored at the root of your /sdcard. The update.zip file is ClockworkMod Recovery. When you are preparing to flash a new rom, move that update.zip (ClockworkMod Recovery) OFF of your phone, onto your computer. Use Odin to flash back to stock. Once you're back in stock JF6, you want to move the update.zip back to your phone as well as Perception/Cognition. Now all you need to do is boot into Android Recovery and select "reinstall packages" until you are in ClockworkMod Recovery, and flash away.
If you DON'T save off the update.zip which is CWM, you will need to do a root after you've flashed to stock JF6. You need to root so that you can then download ROM Manager from the market, and select "Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery", and then follow ROM flashing procedures.
I'm not going to say Cognition is better than Perception or vice versa. They are both great, and designgears has said he will continue to work on both. You can read through the respective threads and generate your own opinion on what you should flash.
Thank you norcal! That was exactly what I needed to know

If ur not on gingerbread boot loaders the recovery will have a messed up rainbow look but is still usable. The gapps u flash after u have already flashed the cm9 rom. All in cwm recovery
Thread closed.
The post has been covered in several how-to's and this it's not a question.

[Q] [q] flashing kernel (newbie)

according from sir kurotsugi's thread
i've been searching for 3 hours about flashing kernel but i got nothing
can anyone help me for flashing kernel?
in another flashing kernel thread i saw they packed the kernel on .zip but from sir kurotsugi's thread he packed the kernel on .img
then i tried to replace .img from sir kurotsugi's to another kernel's .img inside the .zip and flash it via cwm but it's not worked.
my device is sgy gt-s5360
I don't have a Y, but i think u should replace the kernel in the boot.img and flash it though a .zip
Looks like that is what he has already done..that mediafire link.
Just rename it, partition ur sdcard and flash, follow the instructions given there.
Ok, wait.
boot.img can be flashed through odin.
If it's been packaged into a .zip then it is mean to be flashed through a custom recovery like CWM.
Ask in the Galaxy Y Q/A...u might not get much help in general q/a here.

the issue lies in that the only way to install the custom rom is to upgrade my custom recovery to the latest one, and thanks for your response!
EDIT: I researched online and found a method with fastboot and the recovery image, I will try this, is this a wrong method or is it possible?
You don't need fastboot at all if you already have a custom recovery installed. Just download the cwm flashable zip and flash it just like you would a rom (install zip from sd card > choose zip from internal/external > choose the cwm zip and choose install, then choose the recovery option to reboot recovery to boot into the new recovery.

If you have CWM or ClockWork Mod installed on your phone.
----- ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PUT THE CWM TOUCH ZIP FILES ON YOUR EXTERNAL SD CARD AND NOW GO TO RECOVERY MODE AND FLASH IT, GO TO INSTALL FROM SD CARD, I'M PRETTY SURE YOU KNOW IT? OR IF NOT MESSAGE ME I'LL HELP YOU STEP BY STEP.
If you DON'T have CWM.
----- download a cwm and flash it through odin and after having cwm, do that instruction above.

You're all jacked up, dude. Just grab the zip file, place it on your sd card, and flash it in recovery.

and i still work on 2.3.6 and i hate it and it's very and super lagy :crying:
i know how to setup stock rom from odin , it's very easy
but i really can't get how setup custom rom
andi don't know any thing about custom rom ,
and hope any one tell me how to do and explan it to me simpely , not good in english
and tell me the best custom rom that i can use it every day and work fine and fast , and get links for me
i speak arabic & i'm not good in english , sorry for my bad english guys
All custom roms for android 4.x have few bugs. So, if you are okay with that, I will suggest installing CM11. It works nice except for few bugs here and there.
But, if you prefer a fully stable rom, you have to stick with android 2.3.6. In that case, I will suggest FlyOnGB rom. Also, you can try doing a factory reset and see if that helps.
CM11: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2534312
FlyOnGB: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2353292
As for setting up odin, you can use it only to install md5 or tar files. nearly all custom rom are uploaded as zip file, and are to be flashed from recovery mode. You will need to copy the zip file to phone, and boot into recovery using Vol Up + Home + Power key. Of course, you will need to root your phone to go into recovery mode.

Custom roms are already rooted, so you don't need to do anything on them. To root a stock rom, you need to flash the cf-root for that particular rom, and then restart the phone. Use this link to download the cf-root file. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331253
To flash the cf-root file, first you need to flash the stock rom, and restart the phone. Then you can use Odin to flash the cf-root just like you flash a rom.
Google apps are your default android apps (play music, maps, google search and such). You don't need these necessarily, as you can download them from play store too. Few roms have bugs with play store apps, therefore they give you modified version of them in that thread.
If you want to flash the google apps, you can do it just like you do it for custom rom. After installing custom rom, just reboot to recovery mode. Now, select the google apps zip file, and install it the same way you installed the custom rom.
If you are stuck, follow the steps from those link as it is. Use this link for more help. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1894737
