[ROM] Unofficial Cyanogenmod 10 for Hyundai A7HD - Miscellaneous Android Development

A while ago I replaced the factory rom of my Hyundai A7HD (also called the Cherry M-728) and installed Cyanogenmod version 10 on it. It runs pretty smooth, MUCH better than the stock rom will ever run.
For those of you who are not familiar with Cyanogenmod (CM), this is an alternate version of Android (it does run all Android apps) that supposedly runs a lot better than most stock androids. Due to the subjective nature of "smooth", I'll give you my personal opinion on it: it's worlds apart, cannot compare to the stock rom at all. The A7HD had some nasty bugs in it, including wonky wifi (partially fixed with CM10), low screen brightness (increased in CM) and cyanogenmod generally brings much better performance and battery life with it. It also doesn't get as damn hot with CM. The raw gaming experience won't be much affected, though apps like the android market used to take absolutely AGES to start up; this is reduced to near-instant. Truly what an Allwinner A10 tablet should deserve.
TL;DR - tablet experience was great improved with CM10 on A7HD
Please read this guide carefully and don't complain that it is faulty because I've tested it myself and it works fine. The good side is that the Hyundai A7HD is very difficult to permanently brick. Although the firmware updater (Livesuit) thread is written in Dutch, it can be used to return the A7HD to its factory rom without a hitch. During the installation of CM10, the device needs to be formatted so please make sure to move all your personal files off of the internal storage (onto external SD).
It goes without saying that your battery should be full and the device plugged into the ac-adapter (preferably not usb as it delivers less power and cannot sustain the tablet)
The step-by-step guide starts here:
Step 1: Download Clockworkmod (CWM), download here:
http://files.androtab.info/allwinner/cm9/20120308/NOVO7AE/a10_recovery.zip
ALTERNATIVE LINK: https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=8E7A3231B094ABEA!6638&authkey=!AOHu-FqMlRpkFQc
Unzip and put all three files on the internal storage of your tablet.
Step 2: Download these three zips (they are the CM10 rom image, "Google Apps" containing the basic necessities such as Market and a driver compatibility pack for the A7HD to get the camera, wifi and touchscreen working):
http://allwinner-cm9.googlecode.com/files/cm10_a10_20120913.zip
http://allwinner-cm9.googlecode.com/files/gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip
http://old.androidfilehost.com/main...ntroy/misc/1.2.x/a7hd_compatibility_1.2.0.zip
ALTERNATIVE LINKS:
https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=8E7A3231B094ABEA!6639&authkey=!ABnU4BVPWrpTwhg
https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=8E7A3231B094ABEA!6640&authkey=!AJ0NyMfFa0jkrb0
https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=8E7A3231B094ABEA!6641&authkey=!ADdtoPRuaPWGxaQ
DO NOT UNZIP THESE FILES!!, put the three zips on the internal storage of your tablet, such as the "downloads" directory.
Step 3: Install the program "Script Manager - SManager" from the android market. Upon first start-up, select "Browse as root" and press "Ok".
Step 4: Using SManager, navigate to the directory containing the three unzipped Clockworkmod files. Click on the "install-recovery.sh" file. Select the option "Su" for admin-rights, and after that press "Run" to get the shell-script(sh) running. It'll take a little while. Go back to SManager , and run "reboot-recovery.sh" (again using Su). This will restart the tablet into CWM bootloader mode.

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Step 5: You are in CWM bootloader now (see image above as a reference). Because the A7HD does not have vol-up and vol-down buttons (why!), the POWER button represents "Ok" , HOME and MENU both represent "cursor up" and the BACK button functions as "go back". PLEASE FOLLOW THE NEXT STEPS IN EXACT ORDER!!
Step 6: Push the menu-button until the cursor selects "Wipe cache partition". By clicking the "power" button, you select the option the cursor is at. Agree to the question stating again that you'll lose all your data (as it's what you expected to happen, right?).
Step 7: Now select "Wipe data/factory reset". Agree to losing all data. Not doing this step will result in a faulty CM10 installation, so please just do the wipe. This will not delete the zips you've places on your internal memory.
Step 8: Navigate to "install zip from SD card", further on select "choose zip from internal sd card" and browse to the folder containing the three zips. FIRST INSTALL cm10_a10_20120913.zip!!!, SECOND YOU MUST INSTALL "a7hd_compatibility_1.2.0.zip". DO NOT INSTALL "gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip" YET!! It's very important that you now press back and reboot the device.
Step 9: Cyanogen is now starting for the first time on your device; give it a minute or two. Android will go through the first couple of standard questions, take your time if you want to and breath easily now that all is good. However, Android Market is not yet installed. Start the program "updateMe", go to the settings tab and select the option "reboot to recovery" all the way to the bottom. This will cause your tablet to reboot back into CWM for the last step.
Step 10: Now that you're back in CWM, please don't do a wipe or you'll lose all your hard work. Again go to "install zip from sd card", , again "choose zip from internal sd card" and choose the file "gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip". After the installation has completed, you can reboot your tablet. Android will claim it's "updating" some programs during start-up; one of these programs is the play store and all supporting binaries for it.
Step 11: If everything went well, you now have a fully functional A7HD tablet running Cyanogenmod 10. In the android settings, there are a couple of new menus; Please don't change anything in the "performance" tab, it'll just crash your tablet. Especially fiddling with the CPU frequency is a very bad idea as the internal voltage regulators are not powerful enough to sustain >1ghz operation of the ARM core.
Personally I think everything runs a lot smoother in CM10. My wifi connection used to drop upon connecting the HDMI-out to my TV; This bug has been fixed in CM10. The battery-bug has also been solved; you can run the tablet all the way down to 0%. The screen brightness can now be set much higher than on the stock rom. HOWEVER, do not put it to maximum; as the screen has not been designed for this (It'll probably fail at maximum setting, please put it at around 75% tops). Of course cyanogenmod contains a lot more options and possibilities for customization. Though, you'll have to look those up yourself . If you really can't figure it out, drop a message in this thread and maybe you'll get a clear answer, though I hope this guide speaks for itself... Enjoy !
I'd like to thank the author of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1821398 for his work on this rom and its compatibility. I've just written this easy guide out for those who are a bit overwhelmed by the difficulties of replacing a stock rom.

Great ROM but volume control missing
Thank you redtails. Great post and works like a charm.
Only issue I have is that volume control does not work any more since the A7HD does not have volume rockers (why?!). The original firmware incorporated the volume control in the status bar which the mod rom does not. Any chance to fix this or guide me as to how I can change volume? Thanks.

..

Thank you for this. Worked like a charm. Much better experience with cm10 than stock.

Whatever you do, don't accidentally erase the internal storage from the Settings>Storage page. I did that and had to go through ADB>Parted to find the internal storage partition. [ /dev/block/nandi , by the way ] . Repartitioned using command mkpartfs to get back to FAT32.

Purpose:
To get from a retail phone to custom ROM in one sitting. (My phone came with DG27 version of the OS on it, for the record.)

Assumptions:
You know what ADB is, and you have it installed and a basic idea of how to use it.
You know how to install drivers, copy things to the SD Card, the basics. I came from the Evo where I had a LOT of experience, this is basically my jumpstart guide for anyone who "gets it".
What You Need:
Drivers:
32-bit: http://download2us.softpedia.com/dl.../SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86.exe
64-bit: http://download2us.softpedia.com/dl...93/drivers/others/usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64.zip
*Note: You can use whatever ROM/kernel you want, this is just the first one I tried, the steps are not really any different.*
Andromeda ROM: http://www.sdx-downloads.com/devs/noobnl/noobnl.andromeda.galaxy.rom.v1.1.1a.zip
Andromeda Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775110
Odin: http://www.sdx-downloads.com/devs/noobnl/Odin3epicv1.3.rar
DI18 Update: http://www.multiupload.com/X9AB1U56JV
PIT File: http://rapidshare.com/files/416399391/s1_odin_20100512.pit
Clockwork Recovery: http://www.sdx-downloads.com/devs/noobnl/one.click.clockworkmod2.5.1.0-flasher-fixed.zip
Steps:
Updating to DI18:
Make sure the phone is unplugged and powered off.
Slide out the keyboard and press and hold "1".
Press the power button.
After a moment the phone should say its in Download Mode (or Downloading).
Launch Odin.
Plug in phone.
It should come up in Odin (doesn't matter what it says as long as it says something, most likely at this point you will need to install drivers, do that, unplug phone, plug it back in, should come up in Odin now).
Select the PIT file on the right hand side in the appropriate section.
Select the .tar.md5 DI18 update image in the PDA section. Uncheck everything on the left EXCEPT "Auto Reboot", hit Start.
Phone will reboot when it is complete, DI18 should be installed, no root.
Installing ClockWork Recovery:
Go into Settings->Applications and enable USB debugging.
If you are on Windows 7 hit Start, type CMD, right click on cmd.exe when it comes up and select Run as Administrator.
Navigate to where you extracted one.click.clockworkmod2.5.1.0-flasher.zip
Type "run-try-last.bat" and hit enter (try to keep your screen awake, this only caused me a problem once and I'm not sure why, but, just do it).
It will come up with a prompt saying press any key to continue, hit a key and it will say something about rebooting ADB, just keep the phone screen on and let it do it's thing, after a bit you will see it copy a few files and do some stuff then the phone should reboot and the prompt will say "waiting 60 seconds", when the phone comes back up keep the screen on (you can check the setting to do this for you when you enable USB debugging btw).
After, ohhhh, about 60 seconds (who knew) the command prompt will change and say a few more things, and then "done".
Flashing Andromeda ROM and Kernel:
Copy the Andromeda ROM and Kernel to the root of your SDCard now, safely remove the device (should be an icon in your notification tray in windows).
Power off the phone. Hold Vol. Down, Camera button (on bottom right edge of the phone) and power. Unlike, say, the Evo you have to HOLD all three until you see the Samsung screen. After this you should be in Clockwork.
Do your nandroid backup, wipe your cache, wipe data (don't think it's strictly needed but, at this point your phone shouldn't have anything on it worth keeping anyway).
Now flash Andromeda ROM, then Andromeda kernel.
Reboot system now.
Done. Should have root, superuser, clockwork, Andromeda ROM and Kernel, and life should be good!
Citation:
Everyone here. Seriously, if you see a thread with [GUIDE], [ROM], [KERNEL], [PROJ] or just about anything else in []'s odds are the author and at least one person in that thread gave information that is contained within this guide.
NONE of this is my doing. This is just my attempt to streamline and collect in one place everything the average Android user needs to get up to date and well on their way.
Remember, this place, and it's users (you), are what makes it so awesome!

My Stable NAND build (2.6.25 kernel + casacristo's RLS18 ROM)

Not-so-Super Froyo was my best rom build but too much crashes and app forecloses inched me closer to bringing back Windows Mobile. After a while of experimentations I think I found my best combo ever ---- l1q1d's 2.6.25 kernel and casacristo Valentine ROM. Thanks!!!
My screenshots. Not the default appearance though.

}
Here's my setup for NAND Installation: (Download all 4 files)
a. casacristo's VALENTINE ROM build (extract androidinstall.tar from the downloaded file using winrar or any rar decompression program)
http://www.ziddu.com/download/13802744/androidinstall.rar.html
b. l1q1d's 2.6.25 kernel POLAIMG.NBH
c. install-seq.sh
d. You might need to flash the kernel with this file CustomRUU.exe
(See Attached file for download links below)
IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
The NAND installation doesn't work in automated mode. You have to enter the
Android BOOT Menu mode and install from there. Resetting the phone also will not work. You have to enter the Boot Menu and press Exit. OR you can rename the file install-seq.sh to anything so reboot works automatically.
Try these STEPS for installing Android on your Polaris NAND:
IF YOU ARE NEW TO MODDING ANDROID ON YOUR POLARIS I SUGGEST TRYING l1q1d's TUTORIALS FIRST. I suggest you have newer bootloader and radio. Im not responsible for what you do with your phone anyway.
1. Create a folder named Andboot on your SD card and copy the 2 files androidinstall.tar and install-seq.sh inside the folder.
2. Insert your SDCard on your Polaris.
3. Go to Bootloader Mode by pressing RESET once while pressing down the Camera button.
4. Once the 3-color Bootscreen comes out, connect your Polaris to your Computer thru the USB cable and check that the screen says "USB" and not "SERIAL" anymore.
5. Put CustomRUU.exe and POLAIMG.NBH together inside any folder and RUN CustomRUU.exe. Follow the instructions on screen. When the format is over your phone will reset and Android installation begins.
6. HOLD PRESS the Volume UP button until the installation texts roll on the screen and you come into the Android Boot Menu. IF YOU DONT, then RESET the phone and do it again.
7. Choose the menu "Install System" and let Android install for a while.
8. Installation finished. Choose Exit and let Android roll. Congratulations.
WHAT'S WORKING?
I tried the following...
Camera, WIFI, GPS, Bluetooth, Removable Disk Mode in USB works when connecting USB while logging in to Windows, ... Battery is more accurate.
WHAT's NOT WORKING?
VideoCamera... dont ever try it freezes; Install to SD...nope!
WHAT's NEW?
New Market, New Battery Image, No frequent forecloses, lesser resets
WHAT's IN?
Comes installed with GOLauncherEX (I preferred LauncherPro), SwiFTP, APNdroid, and more.
I recommend the following apps (tried and tested):
*Contapps for Contacts (syncs with FB, Twitter to name a few)
*ChompSMS for Messaging
*LauncherPro for Launcher
*Friendcaster for Facebook
*QuickPic for Gallery
*FileExpert for File Navigation
*GPS Essentials
*KS Uninstaller
*Easy Installer
*ClockQ
*Tubemate
I trying it now. I have had problem with installing apps in app store but after phone restart is all ok. I love the speed of this system
Thanks for trying. Thanks by the way to l1q1d for his kernel and Atools and tech. I chose to use his 2.6.25 kernel since that has working camera. You might wanna try with the latest 2.6.32 kernel maybe more results would be favorable. If you can find a better setup pls share also, for now I'd be sticking with this combo. The battery status by the way is accurate and reliable. I got 5% juice and the phone is still working though reminding me to connect to charger. Previously on the Froyo combination the phone is dead at 25%.
Question
Hey guys. First of all thank you for posting this thread, and second, can you please tell me if i can use this build with haret, not nand. I tried to install it but i didnt succed. Can you please help me?
I can't install it too? Everytime i see can't extract the files, after it reboot and hold the vol up bottom?
Hmm sorry my mistake, i forgot to unpack "androidinstall.tar"
I'm gonna comment after use
Seems to work proberly? You say install on nand, but why does it still use the sdcard when reboot?
I have a problem.
After I installed it,I turn off my phone and turn on it again.
I failed to boot the android,it says "Failed to format".
Plz help me!
oh sorry. i know what's wrong now.
Hello again guys. I have managed to install it in haret. I must say its fast but still not so "super" . It doesnt load the market (gives me a server side error), launcher freezes. I will test it some more and get back asap.
LE: Seems to be working. I dont know how, but it is. I am downloading apps as i type. And btw, the battery indicator is much accurate then before. Thank you again.

When you boot it,you should hold pressing the volume up button. You'll find that you are in Boot Menu. Press "Quit". Then it'll be fine.
I'm having a load of trouble doing this, probably cause im a noob :[
i followed the instructions but ended up with a white flashing screen and couldn't do anything. I've just installed the original software windows mobile 6.1 and I'll try again. Hope i can get it to work this time!
does androidinstall.tar need to be unpacked, or do i just unpack that file from the rar?
i did the same thing ... i didnt unpacked the archive and it didnt worked. so you should unpack and try again.
same thing has happend again with just the .tar file on there, my phone completes the installation and when it goes to boot up it vibrates twice and flashes on the white screen, any help would be appreciated
The issue lies on the kernel (POLAIMG.NBH). Your Polaris could have a different panel coz there are actually other types. Please read l1q1d's original tutorial on how to use Atools to obtain a kernel suited for that phone. Just try one of the panel type from that tutorial and if it dont work try the other. You can always use the androidinstall.tar file from this post with that kernel.

In any case, if you want to go back to official stock firmware,
(1) Download and flash it in TWRP RECOVERY (I'm not sure it would work in CWM but has 70% success rate )
(Without flashing this stock recovery in TWRP, you won't able to flash Official Firmware).
(2)Download extract the downloaded zip and copy the "dload" folder to SD card.
(3)Power off the phone and Press and Hold "Volume Up + Volume Down and Power Button" until you see the install processing cmd lines on your phone. Wait for the process and the phone will reboot automatically after update finish.
Now you are on the official stock firmware.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Notice : YOUR PHONE MIGHT TAKE 10 TO 15 MINUTES TO FINISH BOOT AFTER "FLASHING (INSTALLING) NEW CUSTOM ROM" OR "INSTALLING OFFICIAL STOCK FIRMWARE". IF IT WOULD TAKE LONG MORE THAN 15 MINUTES, JUST PULL THE BATTERY AND BOOT AGAIN. THIS COULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF TAKING LONG TO BOOT.
***IMPORTANCE*** : FROM PHONE SETTINGS, NEVER DO "FACTORY DATA RESET" OR NEVER "UNMOUNT" "INTERNAL SD CARD OR INTERNAL STORAGE" WHILE YOU ARE ON "CUSTOM ROMS". IT WILL LEAD TO BOOTLOOP. IF YOU WANT TO DO FACTORY DATA REST GO TO TWRP RECOVERY AND CHOOSE WIPE, PULL SLIDER TO DO FACTORY RESET. IF YOU EXPERIENCE THIS PROBLEM, SEE ABOVE METHOD "GOING BACK TO STOCK FIRMWARE" AND INSTALL CUSTOM ROM PROCESS AGAIN.
I am not responsible for any damage to your phone caused by following this method. I have tested this method and it is working smoothly for me. Be sure to do precisely as my instructions and I am pretty sure this will work 100%. Good Day to you.

Goophone i5s [Custom ROMs]: iOs skinned, Stock Jelly Bean

Hello folks! This is my first post in xda and I want to share these roms for goophone i5s (if any).
This is my first post in xda by the way and I am very new with the interface so expect for flaws in this thread.
In this thread, I will include the tips and the installation processes for convenience to users.
Just take note that you have to back up everything before doing anything as usual.
Also, I assume that you have your custom recovery already installed and if not, just google it and you can find some steps to install custom recovery for mediatek devices
The ROMS :
- iOS Skinned
- Jelly Bean android stock rom
These roms were optimized for this phone to be responsive as a daily driver. All these roms were modified by the people in 4pda forum which i dont know if they are members of xda. Credits to them!
- iOs Skinned rom
This rom is a merged rom from different goophone i5s rom to mimic the look of iOs. The launcher is replace with the app "iLAuncher" for it to have a smoother experience, rooted and many more . You just have to discover it yourself.
Tips for this rom:
For better multitasking experience, you can use @zeppelinrox ultimatic patcher for a better multitasking experience and give thanks to him of course. Hats off to him
Install Greenify and XPOSED FRAMEWORK(Yes xposed framework!) to acces its experimental features. Dont get to excited about it yet since some of the modules in the xposed framework are compatible with AOSP based roms .
You cannot activate the accessibility service of this rom by the way. But with some analysis, I was able to activate it then. You mus install 2 apps: Secure Settings and E-robot which found in the playstore. Here are some of the instructions on how to use those apps to activate its accessibility service: (Assuming you have those apps installed)
1. Open Secure Setting and navigate to "SYSTEM+" (upper part) and "Enable" it
2.Open E-robot and tap the "+" button on it to add "commands". Name the command as you wish and select ok.
3. In the command, tap in "+" to add "Actions" (under actions group). Navigate to "3RD PARTY APPS" on the upper portion of the app (swipe to the left until you see it).
4. Tap on "Secure Settings". Select "System + Actions" and navigate to "Accessibility Services".
5. Next, you have now the choice of apps to be enabled. Never forget to "save" the one you have selected (save icon seen on top).
6.You will now be directed to the main page of the app, tap on "save" icon and then tap the "play" sign to execute the command and actions.
That's it! Im sorry for I did not include screenshots on this one. Just follow the steps and you'll have it
All other settings and options shall be based upon your taste
ROM Installation instructions:
Before doing anything, again, have a backup of your phone using either custom recovery or mtk droid tools to retrieve your current rom.
Also, you need the following:
- SP Flashtools v3..... (i prefer these versions )
- boot.img of your current rom. you can have your boot.img on your backups. (this is for compatibility issues so do not forget this step)
Steps: (Don't connect your usb cable yet)
1. Extract the downloaded zip file to a specified folder. After the extracting, copy your boot.img and paste it to the extracted folder (you have to replace the boot.img found in the extracted folder).
2. Open SP Flashtools run it and click "Scatter Loading". Navigate to the extracted folder and there you can see the "scatter file".
3. Click firmware upgrade. In case you failed to do it, check the files checked if it has its contents linked. In my situation, i found "USRDATA" not linked to the file extracted. Simply click it and navigate to "user data" file found in the extracted folder.
4. Click "Firmware Upgrade" again and now, this is the time that you have to connect your phone via usb cable to the computer.
5. Patiently wait for it as it downloads the files and if says "Download ok" with "green" circle, disconnect your phone and you are now good to go.
6. Boot up the phone and please do wait for it to boot up as it takes a while for it to display. You will then have a black screen with the status bar shown and wait for it until it launches the launcher
That's it and customize it as you wish
Download link of the rom: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B3EnRaB-uXW8YlFXVjk4TlJmcjg&authuser=0
Patched services.jar for this rom for ease: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B3EnRaB-uXW8b1hDNzAyMFFWNzQ&authuser=0
*Simply overwrite the original services.jar found in /system/framework/services.jar and give the right permissions -rw-r--r--
Note*: This "may" not be compatible with the jb android stock rom services.jar.
Just copy the URL above since I cannot direct you to the link due to xda rules
-Jelly Bean Stock Android ROM
This rom is the one I am currently using since I do envy the look and feel of android lollipop. With this rom, you can do almost everything a native android can do. Install XPOSED FRAMEWORK for you to customize it.
Tips for this rom:
Accessibility for this phone is not a problem. Only you have this annoying navigation bar which is unpleasant . You can edit the build.prop if you want to get rid of it. just google it You can also resize it using GravityBox.
Also, the developer options for this rom lacks other options like the animations, simply install "GravityBox" module and navigate to "MTK 6589......fix settings" and tap "Advanced Developer Option".
ROM Installation instructions:
You need the following:
-custom recovery
-boot.img of your current rom (boot.img of your phone rather )
Steps:
1. Put the Downloaded rom (zip file) in your sd card.
2. boot into recovery and wipe everything "wipe data and factory reset", "wipe cache partition" and "wipe the dalvik cache" (advanced)
3. After wiping everything, select "install zip from sd card" and select the zip file and install it.
4. Wait for it to finish and after the installation, I do recommend to wipe everything again and then reboot.
Enjoy!!
