Nexus 4 and 10. Thanks but no thanks... - Android General

Nexus 4: integrated battery and no microSD slot... I hope it fails badly, F*CK THEM AND ABOVE ALL F*CK APPLE, THE TREND-SETTER FOR THIS BS!!
Nexus 10: I have just sold my Galaxy Tab 10.1 3G to buy a Note 10.1 but was willing to give Google a chance first... I don't know how much the Nexus 10 weighs (which is very important to me seeing that ALL of the 10" tablets on the market today weigh too much to be ergonomic) but the deal killer is no microSD slot (and possibly no HDMI out too). Moreover, the straw that broke the camel's back was to see the MORONIC decision to bring the phone UI to a 10" tablet... stupid enough on the Nexus 7 but totally UNBELIEVABLE on the Nexus 10!!
Thank God for the Note, Note II and Note 10.1, I really don't know how any remotely knowledgeable poweruser may even consider anything else (the SIII perhaps).

Have been since almost a year now... Best smartphone (BY FAR) I have ever owned, seen, tried.

Have you seen the price? £279 for a high-end phone, the nexus line has never had micro sd slot. If you like the note just keep it and stop complaining about a phone you havent even tried yet.

Its price is *immaterial* since the non-removable battery alone makes it USELESS CRAP to me.
And I am not complaining, I am COMMENTING (and venting... I LOVE Android on mobile devices and Windows 7 on PCs and I don't like the direction both of them are going).

.
Please all, keep it on topic and with respect

But anyhow, I agree with you. This is an amazing price for a high end phone! Even though I don't like LG, the Nexus 4 looks pretty good...
And indeed 8gb (or 16) and no Microsd is lame. I wonder why that's the trend lately...?
On the other hand, I am a bit disappointed in what they've done with Android, or to be exactly, what they didn't. I mean, ICS is a year ago, so shouldn't we get a big upgrade instead of this minor improvement on JB? It's not that I don't like the improvements, I just expected more!

Here is where you went from commenting to complaining and insulting. This is a market place. Companies don't want to waste money giving people stuff they wont use. People is a group and in marketing means the majority of consumers/customers. I wish the phone had an SD slot but I'm not going to judge the company for making a smart business move or a--very large--group of individuals for buying the products they want. Venting is fine but don't be a ****.
I hope you're happy with your note and note 10.1. Ill be extremely happy with my S4 Pro and Google Tablet. :good:
Playing Devil's Advocate, Post count hits the Devil's number.

The Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 7 both came with no SD slot, I wasn't expecting one on the 4 or 10. I hope the real tablet UI can still be enabled in 4.2, while the Nexus 7 UI looks okay on a 7" tablet, on a 10" tablet it looks like an out of place phone UI, might as well put GB on it. I'm sure the dev community will fix that.
I don't think it will sell much at that price at $400 for a 16GB, especially with the 4th gen iPad 16GB going for only $100 more. You could probably get an 3rd gen iPad on clearance for less. Now I'm no Apple user, I can't stand them, just looking at it from the perspective of the average user.
The Nexus 4, like expected continues the trend of oversized phones. Some people may like that, but for me if I want a large screen I would use a tablet. I want a small phone that is light and pocketable. I had my hopes up for a smaller sized Nexus but it looks like that won't happen.

The majority of users DO NOT NEED TO/WANT TO/OR CARE TO UNDERSTAND. They shouldn't HAVE TO. Just because me, you, and other XDA fanatics have a hard on for mobile technology doesn't mean we're the main consumer. The companies follow the money so that they can continue offering updated hardware for US--XDA fanatics--to play with. If they catered to the minority they would be out more money then they make, and would most-likely stale upgrades and updates. To take full advantage; consumers would need more technical skills than they CARE to occupy.
You never had a case. You had a rant about how people weren't catering to your needs; you had a vent about how people who don't agree with you are stupid; and you had a ***** about how you won't support companies who helped improve technology in other areas--and in the past.

Tablets for christmas?

With christmas approaching I am looking for a couple of reasonably priced tablets for my kids. Preferably something with an android os. My wife has looked at a few but I'm worried that we are going to buy a junker. Im a phone guy but know nothing about tablets. Can anyone recommend a decent "starter" tablet.
Well as of now if you are lucky and can get your hands on a couple of Touchpads, that would be perfect, but if you can't I would either go for a Nook Color (easily moddable to full android) if you can get it for under 200 (slower but it has one hell of a screen) or a Transformer or Iconia if you can get either of them for 300 or less.
If it's not strictly an android tablet, go for iPad 2.

There's gonna be a new one every 6 months with minor improvements.
Android will continually be the way to go, especially with sites like this for development.
That said, you can find Galaxy Tab's all day for under 200 bucks... quicker than the nook color...
I've had dealings with the Motorola Xoom and must say it's very snappy and has held up for my brother-in-law for awhile now... lots of accessories.
I fancy the Xoom over most other things...

lol you prefer Xoom over iPad2? let alone any other android tablet? Xoom is by far one of the worst tablets out in the market. In fact, its old as heck by tech standards. Also, iPad releases thus far have been done at an annual rate, not 6 month cycles.
Go for the iPad2. Apple is essentially the tablet market. You really can't go wrong with it.
If you can wait, see what Ice Cream Sandwich tablets will be like in the next few months.
If I were you, I'd wait until the end of the year to make my decision.

I believe the OP requested a good starter tablet... Xoom is that. It'll teach you want you're doing and what you might be missing and the launch price point isn't exactly how much they are now. I was referencing this tablet as compared to the ipad 2 because he doesn't want a junker but does want something with android and something that they can learn on... You'll find more xoom's on craigslist than ipads for a good price...
secondly.... don't be so literal... the reference to every 6 months was in regards to apples inability to create a product that works out of the box that is stable and reliable before rolling out a new device... furthering my love for the xoom over the ipad... at least with the xoom there is a ton of second-hand support.
I agree with dude above... Steve... you resigned... just walk away dude, just wallkkkk aawwaayyyy

a good starter tablet for android would be the Asus Transformer (if you need inputs) or the Galaxy 10.1 tablet. Galaxy 10.1 is thinner than the iPad2, weighs less, and has Honeycomb on it with a not bad TouchWiz UI.
i'm guessing the OP doesn't want a hand me down tablet, but a new one.
btw, props to Steve Jobs for making such a competitive market in the phone/tablet space. Tech won't be the same without him. As Eric Schmidt said, Steve Jobs is probably the best CEO in the last 50 to 100 years.

That's not fair, neither it is justified. Each iProduct TRIES to keep up with the latest of the technology. So, unless the OP wants that. He's good with the current iPad2.
Although, I agree, he can get an alternative to iPadn, maybe an android-based tablet which will suit more of his needs. But that is his decision. Leave it up to him to decide.

New iPad in the house

My wife has never embraced anything in the technological realm but when all her girlfriends started getting iPads, she felt like she was missing something and decided to climb on board. I actually encouraged this because I knew that she would become addicted to the usefulness of a tablet in very short time. That would bring an end to the evil looks I get every time I pick up a new toy such as my GTab.
We picked up the New iPad today. I compared it side by side to the iPad 2 and while the screen was better, I did not see a huge improvement in everyday usage. Sure, movies and photos looked a little better but all the other apps displayed about the same to me.
This is our family's first iPad so a lot of this stuff is new to me. On the negetive side, it is clear that the closed environment that defines Apple makes things a lot less fun and can be limiting, On the other hand, I have to admit that this thing is smooth as silk. Even better, it integrates with other Apple devices easily and seamlessly. We both have iPhones so sending free texts and making Facetime video phone call between the phones and the iPad is really easy and fun. I did not realize that you could make free video calls between Apple devices without using any 3G data as long as both devices are hooked up to WIFI. Very cool.
It will be a while before I can provide a real comparison between the New iPad and my GT 10.1 but I do have some first impressions. One thing that Apple has always been able to provide is a useful device that simply works... period. The new iPad is no exception.
On the other hand, some of the apps that I rely on all the time, such as a GPS app that does not require a 3G connection, are not currently available for the iPad. If you have a WIFI only device and cannot use it as a GPS, that is a big negetive.
Also on the negetive side is how the New iPad heats up while in use. This device will absolutely require a case on the back side to dissipate the heat. It is unclear to me at this point if the different form factor will produce a less enjoyable viewing experience for movies and for reading ebooks but the shape is certainly something that sets the iPad apart from the GTab.
More later.
Bob
no SIRI on ipad3 either.
How stupid
Apple does SUCH a good job at building the hardware & providing software updates. But sucks in terms of OPEN-ness.
Samsung cant even get ANYONE ICS. phone or pad. its turning into a giant joke
I've had a few mobile Apple devices before, and they are indeed smooth as silk. I personally wish Android was just as smooth, not because I care, but because that's how average users judge a device. (not really sure why)
In my opinion much more people would choose Android over Apple if the animations were stripped out, and they made their decision purely based on the features given. The only thing I ever liked about Apple was how you could keep your devices in sync, but now that Google Play is out Google gains a win in that category as well. (keep in mind I hate iTunes, it's a POS on Windows)
iPads are pretty entertaining though, I've seen some people pick them up just so they can swipe between homescreens. lol

I had been wondering how it'd compare... Thanks for the thread.
Just curious, how does the 10.1 display fare against the "revolutionary" ipad3 display?
ICS will soon be rolling out for the 10.1 and it will be as smooth as butter~
Currently running ICS on my GS2, it is amazing - as smooth as IOS but alot faster!
Currently on the 10.1v which is running on normal TFT LCD, im thinking of comparing it with the the 10.1 PLS/IPS LCDs... it's a great tab but i just feel deprived of pretty colours...
Thanks for the comparison. Apple makes good products, and they certainly have the marketing down.
I thought this was kind of funny.

I know that the iPad screen is better but the GTab is still pretty darn good. Based on my observations, the GTab screen is probably somewhere between the older and new iPad. Please keep in mind that there is no noticeable difference until you get into viewing photos or high-def movies.
If it were me, I would not have spent the extra money for the New Ipad, choosing instead to pick up a discounted older model if I had to have an iPad. I cannot see much difference between the new one and the iPad 2.With my wife, there is the "Coolness" factor to be considered so that is the direction we went.
Those of us who have gotten used to the freedom that rooted Android tablets offer can sit back and smile knowingly when the iPad fanboys and girls go all giggly about this new version. While I was forking over $540 for my wife's new toy, I asked the very helpful girl at the Apple store if there was an app for the iPad that would turn it into a GPS device that would work when not connected to WIFI or 3G. She said no and then gave me an incredulous look when I showed her the CoPilot app running on my GTab.
Apple products are great but it would be a mistake to make the assumption that they are always better than the competition. If my wife asked me to trade my GTab for her new iPad, I would have to turn her down.
Just one guy's opinion.

As much as I adore my Gtab its the lack of quality tablet apps presently on android that let's it down, the openness of Android is far superior than the closed eco system of iOS but jailbreaking it allows some extra useful tweaks, had an iPod touch before and jailbreaking it opened it up a little with customisation of icons and such.

This thread is a continuation of this thread.
This is here so you can discuss what your next phone/tablet should be, if you're not sure what to pick.
Also, if you need advice as to which device is better than another, then feel free to ask those questions in here aswell.
This is an attempt to clear out all the similar threads being created around these forums.
*NOTE* I will be requesting thread maintenance as and when it is needed, to remove any SPAM comments
Excellent, I hope this will attract some discussion on new devices so new threads won't be opened.
I am not looking for a new phone right now, well maybe not depending on the outcome of HTC repairing my Sensation I guess. I sure hope to find out tomorrow. I think if I was going to get a replacement now I would probably get the SGS3 over the OneX. I really don't like the non-removable battery and maybe worse, no SD slot. I know why they did it for economic reasons but I am just not going to go that direction. Batteries do not last forever and their maximum charge level goes down over time. I want to be able to plug the SD into my computer and do a local backup. I also want to be able to get a bigger or faster SD if one comes out.
I am used to Sense but I am sure I could get used to Touchwiz as well, and I just read in the portal that ROM Cleaner works with the SGS3 now, as long as I can rid of the bloat I am content. I am sure that when my contract is done in a year there will be something newer and better out anyways.
I hope it does aswell. These forums definitely have too many of those threads being created
I think I'd choose the S3 aswell to be honest. Even though the One X is a powerful phone, the S3 can quite easily out perform it, as it can with most phones.
The only time I'd be looking to upgrade is when mine become redundant, which with having an S2 (which can still keep up with the newest flagship devices) and Xperia S, I won't need to upgrade for a while I don't think.

The galaxy tab 2 10.1 is a pretty good tablet but it just seems a bit bland to me. Mainly because there wasn't much difference from the original galaxy tab 10.1.
The Nexus 7 is a little beast of a tablet though, so that could always be an option for you.
But if you wanna stay with Galaxy, then it's probably best to wait for the Note 2 like you said.

I have doubts that this will cut down on the many "which device should I buy" threads in this forum, but here's hoping! Ideally, this thread will be used for all such questions. If so, I may sticky it so anyone coming to Q&A looking for advice on which new device to buy will see it.

Well obviously I'm hoping for that to be the case.
But we'll just have to wait and see at the moment. Other new threads could always be merged into here, I suppose.

My mistake, didn't realize until now I meant the galaxy NOTE 10.1, lol. That seems like a sexy little beast! But the tab 2 doesn't seem too bad for a first time tablet device either.. for the price at least

To buy Nexus 7 or wait for Microsoft Surface?
The question is really if the Surface will be cheaper than I bet it'll be (under 500)
Nexus 7 seems like awesome tablet, but I think it might be too small for me , but im not really sure, since I never owned a tablet, and where I live I cant go and see any 7 inch tablets in store.
So what you thnik, should I go for Nexus 7 or wait? Or better yet, is there more choices for cheap and quality android tablets?
7 inch tablets seem like an odd size to me. Not really big enough for the things I would use it for to replace a laptop, but too big to replace my phone.

You are totally right, but now to think other way: its easier to carry 7inch than 10inch tablet.
Also forgot to mention I have some problems with eyesight so bigger tablet might also be better choice, But the nexus 7 price really seems like a good selling point. But if the Surface RT will be 200, then I probably going to miss my money too much.

It depends on when you're going to be using it mainly. If you're out quite a lot of the time, then the Nexus 7 is probably going to be the easiest choice, because of carrying it around.
But if you're more often at home, then the Surface might be better for you because it's a 10.6 inch screen so it makes it easier for your eyes.
Another thing to consider is the operating systems. The Surface will be running Windows 8, but I'm not too sure what that's like to use.
And the Nexus is on Jellybean, it's definitely going to get the upgrade to Key Lime Pie and possibly the update after that aswell.
So, even though the Surface does seem like it'll be right up there with the best of them, I'd suggest the Nexus to be honest. It just seems like the best choice overall.

I might get the nexus 7, if I dont like it I could probably sell it here in Estonia for the money I would get it (from US.).
Also should be mentioned that I dont own a laptop or anything else to carry around, at home I use my desktop, and I dont go out too often, but I think nexus would be nice in school and so on.
Also all these old awesome titles (gta 3, max payne) are made for android these days which I really loved back then, are better to play on 7 inch than 10.6 (better to hold, easier) .
So I think i go for nexus 7, but I hope that I dont get the broken one (from first or second branch), because I couldnt take it back.
I will buy a tablet but I am not sure which. Note 10.1 or Nexus 7? I think nexus 7 is too small as a 4.7 inch phone user but not sure about it. But I want to have pure google experience. Is nexus 7 really that small or not? I'm stuck
I thought about bying the Xiaomi M2 or the Galaxy nexus and i cant pick it since the M2 has better hardware and it is smaller but only MIUI can be installed on him unlike the galaxy nexus which has a huge variety of roms.
In my opinion, a 7 inch tablet is the best for portability and viewing. It feels comfortable to hold with one hand, but it comes down to your personal preference really.

One of my friends asked me for suggestion...
His budget isn't all that big, with a max cap of 15000 inr (~275 usd, though the indian customs are notorious for high taxes; the s3 costs around 38000 inr = 690 usd; so hope you get the picture)
Mainly looking for a low budget android, maybe even a mid end device...
All he needs is "the latest android" on which he can play games...but I know about the quirks that come with a low end phone: inadequate internal mem, low cpu & gpu, lack of official upgrade support...the list kinda goes on...
I have zeroed on sony's live with walkman, mainly for the fact that it gives the most value for money...
The more the money saved + better features; the more likely choice it would be...
If anybody has better suggestions, please share them...
Brands present in india: Samsung, Htc, Sony, Micromax and smaller presence of Motorola and Huawei...
There is no contract system available here, neither are "subsidies" or such...

My next phone is going to be the S3!! I wish Samsung would stop making the phone bigger though...when I first got the S2 I got made fun of because how big it is although it's very thin...I don't see what's the point of going bigger...

Nexus 5 or LG G2 ?

What's up everyone I currently have a Galaxy S4 for Verizon and unfortunately it came stock with ME7 . Im tired of verizon and there restrictions and I miss running a CFW and having a root. Im more then likely going to T-Mobile and getting Unlimited Data. The 2 phones on the top of my list are the Lg g2 and this New Nexus 5. I love both phones but I do like the stock android from a Nexus. I would love to hear your suggestions even if it isnt a phone thats not on my list. In a sense im looking for a new phone to stick with for a good amount of time. Thanks for any advice and help in advance!

Nexus 5, and it's not close.
I was in the same dilemma.
I decided to go for the Nexus 5 because its a Nexus.
The main difference in hardware between the two for me is the screen size. I wanted the bigger screen on the G2.
But I decided I want to pay less and get a device with better software

The nexus is pure stock android which is fully stable .
On benchmarks it benches better than the G2 and is much cheaper.
If you love stock android then the Nexus 5 is the greatest phone you can currently get.
Tip:
Also don't try to use the term CFW (Custom Firmware), people on xda won't usually know it, use the word ROM (Read Only Memory).
I find this is actually funny because we have root in them and we can make everything read-write

Google never allows sd cards in the nexus devices. They never will. They say they are too slow for a top end type device.
Yea I guess ill have tp get the 32 GB version so I never feel limited for space

The G2 has the screen size, battery and camera advantages which is not something to overlook, if they were closely priced I'd go for the G2. Now if you can get some dough off due to contract extension and plan to stay with your carrier, the G2 can still be an attractive offer. Overall though, buying both unlocked and the Nexus 5 is just so awesomely priced. So it's a matter of looking at your options.

That is what I got. I have a 64gb card in my sgs3, so it will be hard, but the thing that makes it worth it, is how easy it is to dev/hack.
Haha, i was on the same boat. I love the G2 Screen and the lack of bezel. Overall the decision came down to software and speed. I always go with a custom ROM cause i like stock, (yes u can do this on the g2) but the fact that i will be getting the latest and greatest updates first is a huge + for me. Thus why i decided on the Nexus.
I say go Nexus!.
Nexus is looking like a go especially with 4g and unlimited data on T-Mobile sounds pretty good to me so far

How you can be a recognized contributor and come out with such a poor statement is quite scary...
Anyway it is VERY close.
The G2 has a bigger screen, yet only a fraction larger. (~1mm all around). And weigh's in negligible over the N5 yet has a 3000mah battery instead of 2300. Then it has a 13mp camera with the same tech as the 8mp Nexus 5.
The Nexus 5 wins in price (for most, some countries not so much), Software Support (I won't say software because the LG Software is actually pretty smooth on the G2 and the feature set isn't bad, but of course not KiKat, yet).
They share the same CPU/GPU/Ram. The Nexus 5 will likely be quicker due to KitKat/AOSP, but it will only be a matter of weeks and the G2 will have that also so if having it first is important to you, then again N5.
They also share the same radios/spectrums/etc.. so N5 is unlocked vs LG G2 probably/possibly being locked to one carrier. Important factor for some.
Clearly I don't think one is a "winner", I have the G2, and I pre-ordered the N5. I want to check out KitKat and see how it performs/battery life with only 2300mah but KitKat optimized. I plan to pick the winner (for me) once I have them side by side for a while.
Either way, they are most CERTAINLY close. The question is (in most markets) is ~$150-200 worth a bigger screen/battery/camera and the loss of immediate updates/better rom development. In that case, for most, the answer seems to be no.

Precisely why it's not close. Price and software development.
While the G2 will likely have developers to create some AOSP goodness for it, the lifespan of Nexus devices is always considerably longer than others. AOSP never runs as smoothly, with little bugs, as it does on actual Google devices.
If you're looking at the hardware, with respect to no other factors, then it is close. Otherwise, no.

Absolutely, if your only importance is ROM's and having the latest software first, or the longest amount of support for updates, then it is not close.
Price is personal. I have absolutely no problem spending the extra $150 if it means better battery life. The G2 is a battery monster, so I expect to be disappointed by the N5, but I absolutely hope I am wrong. Also in some countries the price is almost negligible. Plus if you have an upgrade and stick with the same carrier anyway, you can have the G2 for $150-200 vs $440 (32gb vs 32gb), so that is another factor. A lot goes in to play for this. Just simply saying it is cheaper is not enough.
When comparing ALL factors though, I stand by my previous statements. Personally I wouldn't let development allow me to be hooked to only owning a Nexus but that is absolutely the key factor for some people, I get that. Battery life is a huge importance to me and until I can see how it lasts with my own eyes I take the specs with a truckload of salt. With a 30% less battery size on the same hardware KitKat is going to have to do some pretty superb savings to keep it close.

If you looked at hardware specs only and no other factors, it is NOT close. The G2 wins hands down if you take out software and price, but that would be just plain silly.
In case anyone misinterprets my statements, I am not saying I think one is better than the other. I think both have their +'s and personally I don't find either a clear winner. That is all.
While I'm still going with the N5 for the rom support, Sprint is selling the N5 for $149 and the G2 for $99 (both with 2 year contracts), so the G2 actually wins the price debate.
Edit: whoops had too many tabs open and got this thread confused with one that was just for Sprint. Still, I imagine TMo will sell the G2 for either the same price or less than the N5 to stay competitive.
If usbOTG is present in the N5 then you can simply attach a microsd card to a microsd to USB to the usbOTG adapter (too many adapters) or simply a flashdrive. While it may be a pain to carry around it will at least extend the capacity.

Well if that were the only factor that is a pretty harsh bargain for sure but 700mah in this case IS 30% larger. That is not small. You also get 13mp vs 8 and .2" bigger screen. Again not that I think it is a winning decision either, tough call and personal preference. I just think it is worth more consideration than people are giving.

Price at £500, get x sales
Price at £300, get 2x sales + recognition as a reasonably pricing company, with a quality product, and a lot more factors.
It's business. That's why.
Why post this question? This is another useless thread.
Honestly the nexus 5's quality is on par with some of the higher end smartphones available right now. Admittingly the speakers and camera are not the best, but other than that it's a good phone. There's really no reason for most companies to jack up the price of their phones to $500-600. Just because it costs that much doesn't mean it's quality. If you look at how much it costs to build a nexus phone, vs a leading high end smartphone, you'll see there's not a lot of difference.
They want to put this phone in as many hands as they can. What do you think they make all that money from?
What do you mean? Google is barely charging a mark up. That's why its cheap. Not because they're using. Cheap parts

I think you're the only one here who believes this phone is cheap. Again as stated before, Google does not mark up their devices very much, thus creating a more affordable price. Samsung, HTC, Apple, everyone else will mark theirs up a lot more, but they also do this to pay the middle man (warehouses, retail stores, etc). Google sells their own hardware on their own website, so they're cutting out a lot of the middle men, thus keeping prices down.

i guess my expectations where just very high, and all we got was a mediocre phone that competes with early this year devices, gs4 and htc one etc...
Seems like people are really stuck on stats and fluff.
So if the N5 had aluminum, would that make it "premium"?
Does it need a 42MP camera, with 3.5GHz 8 core CPU, 4GB RAM, 4K display and 128GB ROM?
Why not make a smart phone that is truly smart, doesn't need bleeding edge stats to run AND be affordable. Oh, that's right Google has already done that with the Moto X and now N5.

You have had 15 phones in the past 39 months (a phone change every 2.6 months). I don't see why this is a big deal for you. If they did make a 'better phone' there would be an even better one released a couple months later. They are building a brand...normal people are starting to understand what a Nexus device is (and most can afford one). To put a whole new chipset in a phone requires substantially more money and carries more chances of bugs. Google is starting to influence hardware chip designs with Android's features and I am sure they have a plan to release a feature complete phone that is better than everything else in due time.
Stop complaining and enjoy your new toy.
Then the OEMS have no reason to complete other than custom skins. Like Microsoft and windows 8 tablet and phones
