Thanks for your reply
Can you explain what you mean by make sure you have fastboot working and the phone drivers?
where can i get these?
Sure I thought you just wanted a general outline.
For fastboot, you need to install Android SDK Tools.
For drivers, put phone in fastboot, then install PDA Net, and connect your phone when prompted.
Aha sorry im really new to this stuff, is there any guide or sticky with all this stuff so i don't have to keep aasking questions about this?

After I installed recovery, I just restored the nandroid 2.3.4 found in the DEV section. It rooted it for me and I didn't have to rename the recovery file.

i'm stuck at one part;
using this guide (because I have a i9020A): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007782
When I'm going into device manager and selecting update driver software, I can't find this stuff:
13 - Make sure to CLICK "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
14 - Then from the list 3 choices select Android Bootloader Interface
I'm using windows 7 ultimate so I think the features are a bit different?
I click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
And then it populates the list, but can't find the things in the guide.
Any help?
The easiest way to install drivers is to install PDA net while phone is plugged in to computer in fastboot mode. It will automatically install the appropriate drivers for you.

Works on 2.3.4 too!
Best way to keep apps+data before first unlock+root?
First, thanks to everyone helping to give very clear instructions for unlocking bootloader + rooting. Just one small topic that nobody is touching...
I have a fully stock and locked 2.3.4. I want to root my phone BUT I would like to know if there are any suggestions on how to keep, restore, or simply just not lose so much of the data currently on my phone. I have thought of a backup, but that seems to be impossible without rooting, but rooting seems to wipe the data I wish to backup...
Do you just have to bite the bullet the first time you unlock+root and just deal with getting your phone wiped? Or is there a better way that includes some sort of backup and restore?
Thanks

There are is a way to root the phone without unlocking the bootloader, but if something happens later on...you will probably have to unlock the bootloader to fix it. I have only read of this option and have never actually seen how or done it myself.
So, the best option is to just use FASTBOOT like the others have suggested and unlock the bootloader first. It WILL wipe when you do it, but you only have to do this once! If you would like to back up your phone first you are kinda out of luck. Though, anything important you need can be backed up on your computer first. As far as apps and such...I never really saw losing them as a big problem. It gives you something to do for the next 20 mintues after install. LOL... All your purchased ones will still be paid for you will just need to download and set them up again.
If you get to the point of flashing a ROM after installing fastboot. I still think the best way is to just download one of the Nandroids available in the DEV section. Then once into recovery, just RESTORE the Nandroid. I used the Nandroid(rooted)2.3.4 in that section. It rooted it for me and saved a few steps after flashing RECOVERY on your phone.
So yes, you might as well go ahead with unlocking the Bootloader and wiping your phone. This will only need to be done once, and you will be good to go.

I had the issue the other day, on stock 2.3.6, I also saw that alterdlikeness had a similar issue as well. It was updating past the 3.03 on both su and Superuser.
I had issues on my A2 with 3.1 only, and it would just FC and not work. I had to remove and basically re-root, and leave it at 3.0.1.

You missed the point I was trying to make to those wanting to update thier binaries for su and superuser.... not new root exploits.
I just want everyone to know there are issues with 3.1... however today an update to 3.1.2 today has been proven to work for those having the issues that both alteredlikness and I have seen with FCs.

I think they are the same, except this one has a more updated version of superuser - I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
I personally have always used the one in Jimmy's thread and just update the superuser app and binary (and, thanks for reminding me about that post - I never thanked him until today - and due credit to p3droid & JRW 28 of course).
As for CWM recovery, just install the A2 Bootstrap app after being rooted. Use the bootstrap app - top button, OK, bottom button to boot into recovery.
Good luck to you and your girl!

Boom, was one setup ahead of you and just finished all that. Currently backing up in CWM and waiting for a painfully slow download of Lithium and we should be jammin. Can't believe how easy it all was actually.
So I assume since this CWM is loaded from an app there's no way to boot into recovery should a bootloop or rom failure happen? Is that something people worry about?
Thanks for your response bud.

The cwm on boot feature may already be included in Lithium (edit: yes, it it included - just checked)... if not, you can set that up rather painlessly. And, yes, some of us do worry about that very much so..

Are you on the ICS leak already? Are you on AT&T? If you are on the ICS leak and on AT&T there is a way to root it in the leak thread in the General section. I put the files back up today.
If not, I really am not sure, one of the guys on the other leaks might be able to help there.
Ok everyone the leak is here!
I have tested it all day and it works very well, very smooth.
Don't post here if you are having issues with this leak itself. If you have issues with the process then by all means post in here with the issue.
So this is a how to with all the files needed being posted in here as well.
1) FXZ back to full 100% stock 2.3.6, ONLY if you were ON GB to begin with!!! If you started on the ICS OTA, then do not attempt this, you will Brick!!!
2) Download the file below called Blur_Version.55.13.25.MB865.ATT.en.US.zip and copy it to the root of your SDcard (it does not matter how it gets there)
3) Boot into stock recovery (power off, then while the phone is off hold both the Vol up and Vol down button, right in the middle, then hold the power button until you see the boot menu, then highlight recovery with the Vol down button, and select with the Vol up button).
4) Get to the recovery menu (you should see an android with an exclamation point, at this point) by holding the Vol up and Vol down button, then the menu will pop up, select install from /sdcard, then select the Blur file from the root of your sdcard, and tell it to flash it. You will flash a new recovery and see a droid laying down with it's belly open and red exclamation point, this is normal, just hit both Vol up and Vol down again to get the menu and select to flash from sdcard again and choose the same Blur file as before.
5) Boot into ICS, and root using the zip below, you will connect the phone to your computer and use the root.bat (unzip this folder to your desktop) for windows and root.sh for linux/mac.
Files:
ICS OTA:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/main...man/Blur_Version.55.13.25.MB865.ATT.en.US.zip
MD5sum: 5bd615584406ba726ad7d49a225dd6f1

Fxz back to 2.3.5 from ICS, ONLY USE THIS METOD:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1805975
Please do not post anything in this thread but install issues. DO NOT ASK IF YOU SHOULD UN-ROOT OR IF YOU CAN STAY ROOTED, OR IF YOU DID THE FXZ YESTERDAY ARE YOU OK. Follow the instructions above, or don't if you don't you will NOT get support.
Note: I am not responsible if you bootloop. brick or wreck your phone, or if your girl leaves you cause you play with your phone too much because of this. You are doing this of your own free will!
You will most likely not be able to get the "real" OTA while on this leak, and since the BL is going to be the same, you may not be able to install the "real" OTA at all, so when it comes out you will need to give the devs time to make it work for anyone who installed this. Again no complaints about this either, your dev team will find a way to make it work. You just need to give us the time needed when it comes out if there are any issues.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket (SGH-I727 / AT&T) that I cannot get to connect to a PC after weeks of trying. I have tried to read through hundreds of threads regarding this issue and it seems others have had similar issues but nothing quite like this.
When I connect my phone to a PC, it does charge but Windows XP or Windows 7 will not recognize the phone. Anytime it is connected an error pops up stating "USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it."
So to clarify, I have tried the following suggestions from others to troubleshoot and try to narrow down the issue:
1.) I have tried 4 separate USB cables, including the original OEM Samsung brand data cable that came with the phone.
2.) I have tried 3 separate PC's (2 with Windows 7, 1 with Windows XP).
3.) I have installed Samsung Kies on all 3 PCs, uninstalled and reinstalled the program as well as the Samsung Drivers on multiple occasions.
4.) I have done a factory/data reset on the phone twice to see if this was an issue caused by other apps I've downloaded in the past.
5.) I have tried to use USB Debugging/Developer option and then connect the phone to no avail.
6.) I have tried USB Mass Storage option before connecting the phone.
7.) I have tried to connect the phone to a PC in Samsung's default recovery mode and still showed it was not a recognizable device.
8.) I have tried a friend's galaxy S3 on all cables and PC's mentioned above and Kies immediately recognizes her phone.
9.) I have attempted to clean the physical microusb port with a small brush to make sure the contacts were clean and not being blocked by something.
10.)I have done a battery pull and about 20+ phone resets for all above mentioned attempts.
Based on all of these attempts without any success, it seems to me that this being a PHONE hardware issue is highly probable. I've ruled out just about every other scenario and I'm wondering at this point if my phone's Micro USB port is fried somehow.
Has anyone heard of this or is this a reasonable possibility?
I have tried just about everything I can so far, if anyone has any other suggestions or has any information that may confirm my suspicion, please let me know.
This all came about in the past week due to Jelly Bean being finally released by AT&T / Samsung for the Skyrocket and unfortunately, this update only seems to be available via Kies and a direct data cable to a PC. I have tried to go to Settings > About Phone > Software Update > Check for Updates (while connected to Wifi with a full battery) and the phone has told me 3 times over the past 3 days that my current Ice Cream Sandwich v4.0.4 Android is the most current software up to date. I'm guessing they're not planning on releasing Jelly Bean to the Skyrocket via OTA air updates....so now I'm stuck.
Bizarre issue you got there mate!

Wow, thank you so much. This is the first thing I've seen from anyone regarding a possible fix outside of direct USB connection. I sincerely appreciate it!

You should also try a different computer if you can. It works on my laptop but not my pc. I have no idea why and have tried everything I can think of. Also, use the usb ports on the back of the computer, not the front
Edit: sorry I didn't read your whole post.

Well after getting into the details on the post, it looks like this is created for a phone that already has a custom recovery such as CWM or TWRP installed. Since I do not have a USB port to use on this phone as of right now, is there any way to install a custom recovery on my phone without using USB?
I did download the stock 4.1.2 Jelly Bean firmware directly on the phone's default directory already and it's sitting there in a zip format. If I'm not able to root and/or install a custom recovery without using a USB cable, would it be possible to install the stock firmware using the default samsung recovery mode?

if there is ive never seen it, let us know how, that is how to install a rom/firmware w/out custom recovery and w/a dead usb port
Crap if he's bone stock then no if it were stock rooted he could use dd commands with terminal emulator.
Also nowhere in his description did he ever say he deleted the old drivers from device manager.
Also I'm wondering how you are installing these drivers.

Well I did find this older thread that will supposedly allow me to install CWM and root without using a USB cable or PC. I'm going to try this since you all have confirmed that I'm not able to install a stock firmware/rom using stock recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
Edit - Didn't work, apparently this was for 4.0.3, not 4.0.4.
I'm going to need to figure out how to root and get CWM on my phone just to install Stock Jelly Bean all without using a USB cable. Still no luck so far.

It wouldn't work. Nothing will install in Android System Recovery <3e>. Everything I tried still came back with Signature Verification Failed.
I also tried lifting the "tongue" inside the usb port on the phone several times previously and that didn't work either. I must assume at this point the usb daughterboard or something inside is messed up.
Since stock recovery can't install any type of files and I can't connect the phone to a PC in any way and my phone is 100% stock without root or any custom recovery, I can only imagine I'm stuck in this situation. I have yet to see any solutions for getting root or installing CWM without having a USB connection that works. Unless I can do either of those things, it looks like I'm SOL for updating from ICS to JB.
If they had only made Jelly Bean an Over the Air update, none of this would be a problem really.

Too dangerous the ota bricks tons of people when they do it I can only assume at&t is tired of it and opts for kies only. Also you could buy a daughter board and replace it. It's a relatively easy fix.

So .... lesson learned here is that you CANNOT root a phone or install any custom recoveries such as CWM or TWRP without having a working USB connection. As a result, you CANNOT install any updates, stock firmwares and especially custom roms without the above.
Only option at this point is to order the replacement part for the USB port on the phone or to purchase a new phone (if it's outside of the warranty period).

No you need USB to root that's it technically. If you have root you can install a recovery IMG without a computer using a terminal emulator and dd commands.

yes and no, its the chicken and the egg kind of question, for the sr to get root u need to flash the su files, but u need to have a custom recovery to flash the su files. is there a way to get the su files onto the sr w/out a custom recovery? I haven't seen one yet unless there was a oneclick method which I never used

There is no one click available for 4.x forward.
I am wondering, however, if something like this would work:
