Anyone with the ADT-1, do you have full access to the play store or is it a curated list of apps?
For my uses I'm really going to want to have access to a VPN application like Anyconnect or OpenConnect, is that a possibility with the Player?
Right now, since it's only a preview with a preview of the Play Store, the app base is very limited to choose from. Like 20-30. So far though, I have been able to sideload many APKs just fine (root explorer, XBMC, XBMC Updater, etc.). I still haven't gotten the OTA that was released yesterday though, so I don't know if the experience will change; however, I'm willing to bet there will be some kind of curated experience.
Update: Found the OTA package for Molly to LPX13D. Updating now (after master resetting by mistake - lol). Will follow up with what the updated experience looks like.
Update 2: So, I'm on the new build. The overall experience is pretty much the same, with some minor UI/UX changes. The Play Store no longer says preview on it; however, I still only have the small list of apps. More specifically: 4 Android TV apps; 3 TV Remote Games; and about 15-20 Gamepad Games.

The link to the OTA is http://android.clients.google.com/p...a.signed-molly-LPX13D-from-LPW39.92b93576.zip
If you have rooted the device you will have to fix the update-script to remove checks of install-recovery.sh and build.prop as well as installing a custom recovery for the modified build to install.
Two questions related to apps from the Play Store...
a) Do I need to root in order to sideload apps? Or can I do it similar to a phone/tablet where I just have to allow "unknown sources"?
b) The three apps that will be my "killer apps" will be the DirecTV app, Amazon Prime, and HockeyStreams (HSDroid in the play store). Any reason to believe any/all of these will not work if side loaded?
Thanks in advance... this will likely drive my decision to buy a Nexus Player!

As of right now you can adb install any application (or at least on the ADT-1).

Some apps have compatibility issues with ADT-1. I've tried the Comcast VOD app and HBO Go. They load, but are missing elements for navigation and don't function properly.

I was wondering this as well. I know that Android has native support for PPTP and L2TP/IPsec protocols and that I can set up a VPN on my Nexus 5 with no additional software. Does the Nexus Player / ADT-1 have this functionality, or has it (as I suspect) been removed?
Thanks.
I just installed "TinyCam Monitor Pro" and it appeared in the Main Menu. Wonder if their are other apps not listed that will do the same. Maybe Google is planing to release some more support apps soon?

Kodi (aka XBMC) showed up on my Main Menu after installing, but subsequent installs of Amazon and Amazon Instant Video do not show up on Main Menu (side note: Amazon Instant Video loaded, but nexus couldn't navigate to a video for me to test playing)
Any app can make itself visible from the main screen by declaring a CATEGORY_LEANBACK_LAUNCHER intent. It is one of the requirements for being allowed into the Android TV store, but any developer can put that in their app.

I make these flashable packs for Dirty Unicorns users. Though with all the talk of people not being able to find anything that works out of the box I am sharing this with everyone today.
Thank you to Banks. He has been very helpful in my understanding of GApps and packaging them.
My GApps packages are always MINIMAL
Changes:
2015 09 15
Updated all core/minimal apps
Long overdue.
The link is now future proof. I will strive to maintain these regularly. There will be no dates attached to the zip file anymore. I will always post a new changelog for future updates and of course post that the package has been updated.

Updated Base GApps for Nexus 9 (Flounder)
Let me know if there are problems or suggestions.
Thanks
P.S. Minimal means only what is necessary to function.

I will venture to do so. I was waiting for Play Services 7.xx.xx to update. Looks like google dropped the ball. Every other device seems to have it.
Sorry for the long response time. I will look at adding the apk the poster after you recommended.

Cheers, could you also take a look and possibly include FaceUnlock libs to enable Face Unlock when lock screen is set up? that would be awesome if you could!

Nah, not yet. We've been trying to figure out how to apply the latinime libs, but it's currently causing FC's out the a$$. Stock uses Google kb, so that doesn't do us any favors (for those that use the AOSP keyboard instead).

http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/0...slightly-revamped-google-now-ui-apk-download/
Looks like no dice on that, thus far. A lot of users in Dev Preview are having the same problem.
My guess is that Google has only pushed out apps targeting up to API 22, and Marshmallow will be using API 23. As far as I can tell, you can't update an app to a version with a lower target API than the currently installed version's target API. The packed in version is probably targeting API 23, where the updated apps pushed to the Play Store are probably targeting API 22.
You can actually get the new Google App to run on Preview 3.
You'll need to be rooted for this:
Download the Google App from APKMirror (5.2.33.19)
From the Play store (or wherever) install another launcher (like Aviate, Nova, or Apex). This is important, as we'll be removing the current Google App, which contains the Google Now Launcher
Using a file manager with root access, delete the /system/priv-app/Velvet and /data/app/com.google.quicksearchbox-1 folders
Power cycle your phone
Install the downloaded Google app (5.2.33.19) from the file manager
The upside:
New Google Now layout, and a colorful search bar
The downside:
No more vertical scrolling in the app drawer

Thanks for the info, but I don't think I will be doing all of that just for the new layout. hahaha
Yeah, it's kind of a pain. I'm not going to say it isn't worth it, but it's a pain, and kinda give or take.
Hello. I have seen lots of complaints regarding Google Play system update being stuck, and no further updates being offered at all.
After researching, I discovered a splendidly simple solution—logging out all but one Google account on the phone, clearing Google Play services data, and trying again.
The Main Components APK that other threads suggest is malicious. Do not install such APKs.Threads are suggesting installing an APK called "Main Components", saying that it'll update your device. Do not believe such claims—all it does is change the date shown on your phone. It's very small and does not require restarting to install, proving the ineffectiveness of this app. It also causes versioning issues and incompatibility, and in extreme cases, will brick your device.
In case you have already installed the app, uninstall it immediately via the following ADB command:
adb uninstall com.google.android.modulemetadata
Fixing the Google Play system updateSTEP 1: Update Google Play services to the latest version.
Spoiler: Update Google Play services to the latest version
On your phone, open this page with the Google Play Store, then tap on "Update". If that button does not show up, then Google Play services is updated already.
STEP 2: Leave only one Google account signed in on your phone.
Spoiler: Leave only one Google account signed in on your phone
If you have more than one Google account signed in on your phone, sign out the other accounts and leave the one you often use. Make sure that this account is not a Personal Account (not from your school/work).
For instructions on how to see the accounts on your device and to sign out them, see here.
STEP 3: Clear Google Play services' data and restart the phone.
Spoiler: Clear Google Play services' data and restart the phone
Note: Do not uninstall updates of Google Play services.
Important: When you clear Google Play Services data or storage, it may delete some information saved to your device, including transit cards, COVID cards, and virtual payment cards saved to Google Pay.
On your Android phone or tablet, open the Settings app.
Tap Apps > See all apps. Note that you do not need to tap "See all apps" on Samsung devices.
Scroll down and tap "Google Play Services."
Tap Storage > Clear Cache.
Tap Manage Space > Clear all Data. Note that "Manage Space" is called "Manage Storage" instead on Samsung devices.
Restart your device.

STEP 4: Check for Google Play system updates again and hope for the best.
Spoiler: Check for Google Play system updates again and hope for the best
Now go check for Google Play system updates again. There should be an update, follow the prompts to download and install it. After installation, it should prompt you to restart. If not, tap on "Check for updates" again and it shall prompt you to restart. After restarting, check if the update was successfully installed. If yes, congrats, you have successfully updated!

Maybe there's a different problem on your phone, have you updated the firmware to the latest version?
I am on latest firmware. You write "Main Components APK that other threads suggest is malicious" But how do you know that? apkmirror.com dont share malicious!

Not malicious in a malware sense, but it causes further problems and is useless, unless if you want to fool yourself into some placebo update.

That apk doesn't do no harm to your phone but it doesn't do any good also; it only changes the date.
For me this process does nothing. I already tried lot of methods without luck. My phone had no issues on Android 10 but after Android 11 the Google Play System update went nuts, I use only one Google account. I tried to factory reset the phone, clearing data/cache for Play Store, Play Services (updated), going to Safe mode and clear these data/caches but nothing works. I tried to go beta for Google Play Services but no luck. It is just frustrating because I not modified the ROM of the phone and the Unihertz manufacturer cant help me, I also reported this issue several times to Google Support, but the best effort was from them to ask videos about the issue. I got no response after my report. This is just nuts from Google, seriously unprofessional. They marketed the Android 10,11 with this update, to provide basic security updates for every phone and they cannot provide it at all for lot of users facing this issue. You can search about this and this is independent from manufacturers, the issue is in Android 11 probably.
Tried this myself.
Still on June 2022 Play Update on Android 12.
I expected July at least. And August should also be out any moment now.
How can you call com.google.android.modulemetadata aka main components as malicious? It is one of the component introduced as project mainline. Have some research before posting,
Project Mainline - https://www.xda-developers.com/android-project-mainline-modules-explanation/
Module Metadata aka Main Components - https://source.android.com/docs/core/architecture/modular-system/metadata
When you install this to system, it parse information from playstore/services apk since google push the system updates through playstore and services apk (latest here) and updates the same in the UI. Installing this won't install system updates but it shows the right system version you are on. Works only with devices showing wrong system update due to a factory reset.
I know you are trying to help, but make sure to use the right wordings.
Thanks!
How to disable automatic updates? After update my Xiaomi Mi A2 with Android 13 Port from Pixel 5 freezing and overheating.
If i delete /data/apex/ folder and reboot everything works fine.
This issue is certainly after Android 11 and 12, the downgrade to Android 10 solved the issue for me, with Android 10 the Google Play System Update works flawlessly. Also the Android 11 has GUI performance, high cpu usage and battery drain issues. Unnaceptable from today standards, I hope one day I can get a good Android device that works just fine.
I'm on Android 13 and this didn't help me. I'm still on June 22, and there's even October already available.
It's now almost November 2022 - Google Has Failed To Resolve The Problem. And this issue started after May 1st 2021.
I have a 5g Nokia and T-Mobile. This guessing game gives me the chills - like some victim in a twisted B rated film's plot about a blackout that selects randomly targets made to be blind for no reason at all.
