Data load 10x higher when using ATT mvno SIM - why? - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hi geeks and geekettes,
I've been running for a few months on a ST TMO SIM and getting an average of very roughly 200kb a day (3GWatchdog).
I got a test AirVoice account (great CS!!!) and get speeds max at 350kbps (speedtest.net) (which is more than fine for me) but notice that I am unable to get through a day with less than 1mb - often 2mb, even after I shut off sync (contacts and gmail). Usage is a lot in "OS and other services" and a lot in the particular browser (Maxthon or "browser")(3GWatchdog).
So I got curious as to what in the SGS4G was doing that as I don't think that ATT is subversively doing a double or triple thing. I know it's a TMO phone, but I am guessing that in its use of the ATT towers it's doing extra work. Yes, I am thinking there's an Infuse in my future but that won't happen for 2 or 3 months. Meantime I have gone back to ST and won't port to AV until I get an ATT phone.
Thoughts on that extra work? Running erikmm's SlimICS V2
Thanks!

Better Battery Stats may give more information.
I'm mixed on My Data Manager as a day-to-day tool for a variety of reasons, but it might be another view to help diagnose.
Posted from my SGS4G, thanks to Team Acid development

Hi Jeff, I used to use My Data Manager, but it didn't work when I first put up SlimICS. I had to reflash for an MMS prob, so I'll try it again.
I get 3 days out of a battery, so I never thought to try BBS. I'll grab it.

BBS is useless. MDM is better than 3GWD (and does work on SlimICS). No real clue as to why AV(ATT) burns more data, but google services seems to jump.

The short answer might be "CM9" but SlimICS did it lots, CM7 did it a lot less, 2.3.6 seems to not do it at all.
It's all google services/framework's fault. An easy out is to shut off background syncing, and freeze market/play when you're not using it (it's always out and about checking to be sure everything updated ... LOL

Anyone tried seemymobile?

Has anyone tried seemymobile.com yet? It is supposed to track your phone after loading a client on your WM6 phone. They say they are in beta, is it safe?

As I understand this, it just uses your GPS chip to get your position and send it to their server using your 3G.
1. This will drain battery like hell.
2. If you don't have an unlimited Data plan, you'll be ruined by the end of the month.
Thanks, I tried it just to see and its really cool. I talked with the guy developing it and he said the latest version of the beta has done better with battery life, and that yes data is a concern. Soon there will be an option on how often to poll, like with activesync which he said will really help battery and do better with data as well.. If anyone is interested I'll post updates here from time to time as the new versions come out.

Warning about tweetdeck beta!

Firstly sorry if this is in the wrong place. Just wanted to ensure its in a place obvious to folk so they get the warning.
Secondly after installing tweetdeck on my phone I let it run for about a day and a half. However after that short time I noticed my battery was suffering quite badly. So I took a look around my stats and also noticed that in that short time the program had used no less than 74mb of data!!! I rang my colleague who also installed it and he found it had used 100mb. And a fair bit of battery.
He has a nexus one I have a milestone. We went sniffing around their forums and found a few other users complaining of the same issue. So we've uninstalled for now. We've posted something up on their forum but as of yet no reply. Needless to say that sort of data usage is unacceptable. Especially when alot of carriers are getting rid of unlimited plans.
Its running constantly. Updating as new feeds arrive. Yes its going to eat up data and battery.

I take it you didnt bother to read my whole post? no? didnt think so. Regardless of the fact its constantly updating it shouldnt eat nearly 75-100mb in two days. My bbc news, facebook, and gmail are all running constantly but they use a few mb every few days. get a clue.
sounds bad ... is there an answer of the devs now?
well they've responded to our thread and have gone away to test it. We'll see I guess.
this is the thread on the official forums.

How do you see how much data a particular program uses?
there are apps on the market place that will monitor and tell you.
or you call *#*#4636#*#* - there you can have a look on monitored apps

[FIX] Missing Carrier Billing Option in New Leaked Android Market (T-mobile USA)

Some people have been reporting that the carrier billing option no longer shows for them in the new version of the market. This very issue happened to me as well, but there is a fix. Here it is:
Open application management > select the market app > force close it > clear cache > clear data > turn off wifi (if its on) > make sure you have 3g/4g signal (not edge) > open market and except the terms
Carrier billing will be working again, just give the market a min. to finish syncing your account by leaving the main page open (again just like a min). Now verify it worked by checking any US app (apps produced outside the US can't be billed to tmo).
Hasnt fixed the issue for me :'(
Are you sure you followed the instructions exactly? One piece out of place and it won't work. This method worked for me and I can even repeat it 100% of the time (if you uninstall the update and reinstall it you have to do this again to get it working). Not to mention it has worked for other users.
This worked for me, thanks!
if the vendor is not US based I don't think you can bill to Tmo...
also, on the confirmation page, hit the credit card line. you'll get a pop up with a choice of either to bill your credit card or tmo.
sometimes people miss that part...
POST CORRECTION: It works. As Mainspring pointed out, if you try to buy an app from a non-US based vendor, you can't charge to your T-Mobile US account. Just tried a few different apps, and sure enough - one of them let me buy by charging to my T-Mobile account.
A good clue is the pricing - if it's something like $.99, it's probably a US vendor, while something like $1.39 is most likely a vendor outside the US.
Seems to be new to this version of the Market - I seem to recall being able to charge ANY app to my T-mo account, not just US based apps...

Read it later Pro is the app that I tried to buy to test if this fixed my phone and I can not buy it on my phone but I work for T-Mobile and tested the same app on demo phones and co-workers phones and they can bill that app to their account. So I'm not sure why it wont work for my phone and as far as I know I did it exactly how I'm suppose to by fallowing the instructions, even tried multiple times so I have no idea what I am doing wrong

Yeah I'm not sure I'm starting to think it's something T-Mobile screwed up. They added Family Allowances to my account (Bro downloaded $63.96 in apps on his Nokia!!) but it's set up that my line can still download with no limitations on my end and they said it was right on theirs too.
Worst part is they took it off now and I still cant bill to the account even after trying this, uninstalling updates then trying this again, fresh install of the old market and trying this AGAIN! I'm gonna be pissed if I can no longer bill to the account. T-Mobile is looking into it but they blame Google/Android which isn't true cuz I signed my account into a dummy phone at work and it was fine.
Thank you so much!
Gotta love xda thanks man it worked flawlessly
Turn off WiFi
Applications
Market
Force close
Clear cache
3G/4G connection
Accept terms done thanks man
It works guys ..
Now time for them 10c apps lmao
I am not get in the carrier purchasing option even after doing the said steps. Could it be that I am running miui? Anyone else experiencing the same issue?

Thanks, worked perfect
try to uninstall update
My market updated by itself and the Tmobile option wasn't available so I:
Turned off WiFi,
Turned 4G on,
Applications => Market => Uninstall Updates,
Opened market immediately and searched Where's My Water (10c app ),
and the option to purchase using Tmobile was there.. of course I opened market again later on and it was the new market(with no Tmo option) but it does works this way.

Just file a trouble ticket..they can fix it..happened to me 2 months ago..they fixed it in less than a week.
Still a successful method to get it working today...
Prior to trying the original poster's method I was unable to bill to my carrier (T-Mobile). However, after multiple attempts at this method it finally worked. Now I am able to bill to my carrier again after switching ROMs. Thanks.

CM7.1 issues

On a spare Showcase that I've got, kind of a test mule instead of bricking my daily use phone, I flashed CM7.1. It flashed fine, everything seemed to work just fine w/ the google roms. However, after playing w/ it and letting the battery die, now the damn thing won't save ANY passwords. Like for instance, on an ebay app, fb app, twitter app... the app opens at the log in page, I attempt to log in, and it gives me and error message. When I attempt to go to the android market, I get an error message. When I pull up the browser, home page is set to google, the home page pulls up fine. However, if I try to go to another website, I get an error message, but I can go right to google w/o issues. Since this phone isn't on Cspires network, all of this is done over wifi, but I'm showing a decent wifi signal. Any ideas?? I really like CM7.1, it's so much faster than 2.3.5, but if all else fails, I'm gonna have to odin back to 2.3.5, which I don't wanna do.
The CM 7.1 is quite problematic on the Showcase... Right now I don't have mobile data thanks to CM7
yeah, I'm not impressed at all. I definitely like the features that CM offers, but I guess w/ this phone being a regional phone, it kinda hinders development. I can't wait to switch to ATT.
At&t really. They are way overpriced. Just promise not to get an iphone

haha, no I'm sticking w/ Android, I just pray they're getting the Nexus. We're switching b/c my fiancee gets a really good discount through work, and I'm in school. So, w/ me in school, that's 1 less bill I have to pay.
Holy crap you have no idea how I hope it comes to Alaska. It may determine if I stay with my carrier or not.

[Q] google now

Does anyone actually use google now? I have mine turned off on my nexus because it's a pretty big battery drain.
I never noticed any major battery drain, but it comes handy sometimes
Sent from my Desire HD using xda app-developers app
It was a huge drain at first because I hardly ever turn GPS on.
I turned off "use GPS" or whatever in the settings and only use WIFI and cell tower data for location - battery use is back to normal.
One of the things that bugged me was that mediaserver became a big wakelock. It was in the foreground for as long as I kept the screen on. And can the people who actually use it tell me what you use it for?
I think the mediaserver thing is a separate issue. I never had that, myself - but people have gotten it after upgrading to JB. If backing up and re-formatting the SD card doesn't work, there's a thread or two on here that details what else to do.
I just use Google Now for the lulz. It does some cool things when I'm in the city, like displaying local business deals / information / et cetera.

It sounds like it's mainly for people who travel. That's definitely not me
That is interesting. I will have to try that out
Never found it useful.
I've deleted it.
As for me - useless application
Pretty useless app in my opinion as well. Google has a bunch of app and I think they can do away with it.
Never found it useful
Used it all the time on my nexus. I didn't actually search for anything though, just checked the cards for scores, and traffic info, which was great.

It is very useful service for me , I need it since I moved in to new town that I do not know much about.
