Anyone tried seemymobile? - General Topics

Has anyone tried seemymobile.com yet? It is supposed to track your phone after loading a client on your WM6 phone. They say they are in beta, is it safe?

* Unlimtied Data Plan (Suggested)
* GPS Enabled Device

As I understand this, it just uses your GPS chip to get your position and send it to their server using your 3G.
1. This will drain battery like hell.
2. If you don't have an unlimited Data plan, you'll be ruined by the end of the month.

Thanks, I tried it just to see and its really cool. I talked with the guy developing it and he said the latest version of the beta has done better with battery life, and that yes data is a concern. Soon there will be an option on how often to poll, like with activesync which he said will really help battery and do better with data as well.. If anyone is interested I'll post updates here from time to time as the new versions come out.

Tethering

Thank you forums, I love you! Anyone get caught by Sprint for tethering?
10GB+ a month and no complaints from Sprint. My phone is my primary source of internet.
sweet thats good, i was prob pushing 2 gB max and was getting worried about getting caught...
How do u know how many gbs your using? For example, how much is 10gbs? how many hours on the internet is that? Or does it even work like that. Just curious cuz im tethering now as of yesterday I finally got it working and LOVE IT but dont wanna get a suprising $1000 phone bill, lol.

You can just keep track of the MB count at the bottom of the screen of the tethering program.
Is that up or down?? Also this story makes me VERY nervous!!!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7141935.stm
also i think in your bill it states how much data is being used
Been tethering for a couple of years with no issue. I never could get internet sharing to work to WiFi router then ps3 though. for a while, I had Bluetooth modem. setup, so blackberry would auto connect when at the house. With WiFi tether though, BAMMM. I play socom with it, and watch Justin tv; its sick I tell you. Sick

Every website carries a different ammount of data, some websites are less than 1 MB or 1/1000 (ok, so 1/1024) of a GB. Some are far more than that especailly with animations and flash. Streaming Audio and Video eat up big chunks.
You can go into Device Self Maintenance on your phone and it has an option to show data usage. I think some ROM's remove it though. And I think that because my phone is the primary line I have options that my wife's hero doesn't. Bill pay and what not.
Then again, Fresh ROM 1.1 doesn't have it in there and I have no clue what to tell you to select to find it. You could also log into Sprint.com and look at your bill, it has current data usage.
I too am happy to see the 10GB+ post. I've been tethering for over a year, first with windows mobile, and now with wifi-tether. On windows mobile things always went slow most of the time, so I never passed up 5 gigs in a month. Now that I have the hero, I've been using it a lot more since it is my primary source of internet. It goes really fast and I love it. I'm happy that now I don't have to worry quite so much about the usage. I don't see myself hitting the 10gb mark any time soon.
WiFi tethering is uber cool

what is the Best way to tether my android without paying extra?

I just got the verizon fascinate, and cancelled my home phone and internet. what is the best way to tether it so i can surf the web on my home PC. i am looking to avoid the charges of using the hotspot feature from verizon.
any help would be greatley appreciated..
thanks so much!
If you tether and use heavily, you'll be noticed. I'm not sure if PDANet is available to Verizon Android users (Much like we t-mo guys can't have skype default install from market...), but look it up.

Well... In reality, it's not what I consider heavily, it's verizons perception of heavy usage...
If you're going to browse the web for four hours, maybe send a few e-mails and pull forty-five songs from Miley Cyrus, that may look a little suspicious.
The beauty of me using T-mobile and vanilla Android on my Nexus one is the ability to tether "for free" through Settings -> Wireless and so on. They send me texts/emails/letters sometimes regarding my data usage and say that they throttle me back until the next billing cycle. I see no large performance degradation though.
Wow I've never gotten a notice. They tell me they can't track my usage cause it's unlimited. Consider this heavy I tether every night and sometimes use xbox live. I also download lots of roms and have played mmos.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
what do you guys average for data usage?
AT&T wishes they never offered UNLIMITED DATA PLANS!
Well I got the C&D order letter using BARNACLE of course I played dumb and called to retain my unlimited plan....
So I had to add tether on another phone my lady has which was not on unlimited.
Simple solution LOL when I have a large file I send the url to my Atrix with unlimited data plan then download that massive file on the unlimited plan phone.
Once done downloading I simply transfer the file as if it were USB attached storage or pull the SD etc.. but that is NOT TETHERING and I still get the files I wish...... GOTCHA AT&T!! Oh and of course since you NOW have rules about content downloaded I abide and only download what is permissible (ie. purchased music etc....) I hit 105GB this last cycle and plan on even more this month.
AT&T is a horrible company when it comes to ethics and morals..... they LIE alot!

Ha!!! This is so far from the truth I can't help but laugh....
1. pdanet has a feature to keep your carrier from noticing your usage called "hide tether usage'
2. I used my phone for 4 days straight when my internet went out due to bad weather....I streamed dozens of movies, downloaded music, browsed, sent emails, and I even downloaded Uncharted 3...all while tethered. I have yet to get any letters/emails/calls/texts from sprint telling me to stop using so much data....and I don't use the 'hide tether usage' option.
3. there are rumors that carriers CAN'T see your tethered usage from and android...they can only monitor iphones. I have yet to see hard evidence one way or the other, but it's been said many times that no carrier can monitor android usage to the point of knowing whether it's tethered or not.
Interesting read about PDAnet & verizon android devices
http://phandroid.com/2011/05/02/pda...ing-use-but-verizon-users-may-be-out-of-luck/
They can tell by the OS on the phone I believe as they had the dates I tethered..

Potentially HUGE BUYER'S REMORSE!?

Hey guys and gals, Please advise.
I've been a Sprint customer for 2 years my contract is up. Had an HTC hero which was an amazing phone considering it's age.
I bought 2 VM phones; the optimus V for the wife, and the Motorola Triumph for me. Owneed them both for 12 hours and I'm a bit concerned.
I've rooted them both and removed some bloat. I looked online and see nothing but praise for the optimus V and the MT looks like a lemon based on reviews! I noticed some lag on the touchscreen (I tried to ignore it but the killer is the GPS, the optimus found location in 5 seconds, and the MT was still searching after 5 minutes.
Should I return this thing? Is it a software problem or hardware? Will a custom ROM help?
Please tell me if i should exchange it for the optimus.
Had the same feeling back in August when I purchased the phone. Do yourself a favor and install CM7. You will notice an insane difference; it’s more like owning an entirely different phone. That thing they call an operating system that’s installed out of the box is an insult to both the user and the phones hardware which is actually very good. It took me a few weeks to get the guts to install the Rom but it came to either that or throw the thing in the Delaware. Now a days you could not rip the device from my cold dead hands. I use the TG reloaded build and if you’re not familiar with Roms CM7 is for the most part the closest thing you can get to striate up Google's Gingerbread with a few tweaks and no Virgin Bloatware. Anyhow with the correct software the Triumph is a beast and runs circles around some of my friends higher end phones using their stock Roms. Also, the processor used on the Triumph is used in other devices as a 1.4g processors, including a few tablets so don’t be afraid to crank it up a notch or two. Also the TG Reloaded edition uses a 64 MHz minimum frequency when idle compared to the 246 MHz minimum used in the stock Rom, literally doubles the battery life.
Yes, give the CM7 TG-Reloaded ROM a try. The Motorola Triumph is based on Huawei Ideos X6 reference design, which is sold as different variants world-wide. The hardware is very capable, but either the Motorola people or those responsible for getting it to work on VM were very sloppy, so all the bugs in stock ROM. Most have been addressed in CM7, but still some remain.
As for the better battery life, the 61 mhz low freq helps only a little, other factors include less junk running in the background, battery-optimized interactive governor, and wakelock bugs in the stock kernel that prevent phone from entering deep sleep mode (common, but hard to track problem on a lot of Android phones).
I love my MT running miui [email protected] there's a agps fix somewhere on this site. I personal don't have any issues with this phone
Sent from my Motorola Triumph using Tapatalk
Thanks for the replies.
I agree that CM7 makes this phone waaaayyy smoother than stock. I still get an occasional lag on the touchscreen and the 4 "buttons" on the bottom are sometimes unresponsive; but this thing is awesome. The only reason the Optimus V is more popular is because it's cheaper. The MT is sexy :^)
The thing I miss from my HTC Hero was the ease of wireless tethering. I didn't really use it much, but it was nice to know I could run any piece of hardware without any mods.
Does the CM7 TG reloaded ROM have an OC kernel built in or do I need to flash one?

I may be close to fixing the touchscreen issue, it bugs me too. CM7 allows built-in wireless tethering, and you can add it to be a quick toggle in the notification bar, along with other options. OC kernel is built-in, check out the first post on the ROM thread to read up about all the features.

The first few times I tried to connect it may take a long time for the client (PC) to recognize and go through to the internet, give it a few minutes & try to refresh a webpage. It works for me & others.

Wireless tethering worked fine for me when I tested it (only tried it to make sure it worked). I didn't have to do anything special to make it work.

I was really excited when you said the CM7 native wifi tether worked...but I couldn't get it to
I even factory reset and wiped everything to make sure it was a fresh attempt. Still nothing. Both my PC and Hp touchpad can find the signal but neither connect/keep the connection. After attempting the connection (and saying it's connected for around 3 seconds) the touchpad will no longer reads the wifi signal.
Any threads on this for me to research? I looked to no avail.

Nevermind, I just tried wireless tether for root users, after about 10 attempts with the native app, and it works! Better to be lucky than good.
Now...has anyone had any luck getting Sprint visual voicemail to work on this thing? :^) Mine half works , I can compose messages to myself but any calls wont actually work.
thanks again for the replies people. We SHOULDN'T be in 'low activity" section

VM doesn't support 3rd party Voicemails so getting a visual one may not work... You can ask VM about it and see if they can let you but it may just be a network thing with them...
And the MT is in a low activity section because no one is here there all at android forums...
Triumph has a few hardware issues that won't go away, like GPS and touch response puking randomly.
Also while CM7 does bring extra functionality, it is less stable than stock.
Optimus V is basically the only solid prepaid phone on VM.
Hopefully Sprint learned their lesson to not rebrand POS phones and instead, use existing phones that have proven themselves. We will likely see much better phones by end of 2012 based on what was said at CES '12, so just hang tight.

Yea... by the end of 2012, well its the beginning right now and if they don't start getting newer phones, I may have to switch to another company... I heard Straight Talk is getting the LG Optimus 2X so that may be incentive enough for me. VM needs to get a dual core and not just keep bringing in more and more phones that have 600mhz or 800mhz processors with 3 inch screens...

Yeah that phone looks really promising, but ST is expensive - paying $25 on VM vs $45 for ST, unless you need the higher end plan on VM anyway.
If you're willing to go high end, you can grab a Nexus/GS2 and use it on tmobile's prepaid instead, it's what I'm doing current with TMO's $30/mo plan.

That's what I've heard. If you buy a used/unlocked TMO phone, you can get the TMO activation kit for something like $7 ( it's just a SIM ) and put it in your phone and your good.
This is what I'm thinking about doing myself. I get ok coverage with VM on my LGOV, but not great.
My wife has a TMO Exhibit2-4g and it's a great phone and the service is good as well. She's on the $50/month plan, I'll opt for the $30 I think.

i had both of these phones! i liked the V better. but the MT was newer and bigger so went to that. but still have the V.

* Download User-Agent Switcher For Chrome
* Select SAFARI -> Mac Safari 7
* Surf as usual.
Let me know. I'm using this setup as we speak and it looks like normal. Please be specific in your response.

I'm on T-Mobile too. T-Mobile starts looking for accounts that have an unusually high amount of traffic. They look at the user-agent, and if its a known desktop one, it'll auto-route to the upsell page. So to get around it, using a user-agent not on the t-mobile upsell routing list will allow you to continue as normal.
Proof of this, my cycle reset, I removed the user agent, and I was fine until I hit about 45gb in two days, then I got the upsell again. Kicked the user-agent back in gear (Safari -> Mac Safari 7) and I can tether as usual.
Even though we have tether_dun_required set to 0 making it look like traffic is coming from our phone, there is a "conflict of interest" what is being reported vs user-agent being used.
Hope that makes sense.

New cycle in terms of my billing period for t-mobile (when they capture amount of data used, minutes, and texts). Yeah, IE is flagged as desktop browser, you'll get an upsell page for sure. Doesn't matter if you have a custom rom or rooted. At the end of the day, unless you use VPN to encryt the data transferred, simply looking at the user-agent of your browser is enough to trigger the upsell. Did Safari work for you and are you seeing the sites as usual?

Tmobile should give serious abusers the boot
100gb??? Jesus. I'm sorry to say but it is users like you that make carriers want to keep our phones locked down. There is nothing wrong with tethering when in a pinch, and maybe using <5gb of data /month but 100gb is just outright abuse. If you are using your phone as your primary data connection, then you should be paying for a tethering plan.

Android OS Data usage over 7GB in one day

Hi all, I have a unique problem i'm hoping you can solve. So I got my vzw google pixel last month. Everything was great for the first week, until I had received a text saying I was out of data. I checked my data log and all of the data usage was Android OS, as apposed to a specific app. Spoke with Verizon, they said it was a bug, refunded my data, I did a factory reset, everything was gravy.
Fast forward 1 month later. This glitch happens once every two to four weeks, and I end up spending way too much time with Verizon getting my data refunded, which is second only to the security concerns of 7GB of data that verizon/google cannot account for. Is there anyway to isolate data metering for specific services of Android OS (again, services, not apps), so I can try to figure out what the culprit is?
Google Pixel (VZW)
Android 7.1
Rooted, then un-rooted with factory reset (still unlocked). Problem occurred post root, but not immediately after. That being said, please don't jump to assuming this is an EBKAC unless you have a valid explanation. I've rooted all my past phones without issue and I read documentation.
Are you current on updates? It might be going nuts trying to download the update. There have been a couple of reports of that..... But not too the extent you have been hit.

I guess I'll try to update it tonight and see if it happens again. If anyone else has an idea of what it could be, please feel free to chime in (7GB is still huge for auto updates). If worst comes to worse, is there a re-lock guide anywhere for the bootloader? I saw a lot of warnings against it early on so I haven't tried myself, but I may have to if I can't resolve this.

I have my own thread on this same thing except I had over 20gb downloaded for Android OS. After I updated to the latest build and turned off auto updates in developer settings, it stopped downloading. So I'm not sure exactly what could be causing it for you. Hope you get it fixed though as I have a 900$ phone bill from it.

What carrier do you have that charges almost $900 for 20GB of excess data?

It was over 30 GB of excess data, 20 just in one day plus my actual data package was around $150. I'm with bell canada.. So it was like 750 in extra charges.

I hope you contacted them about it. Unless you rooted, and that's the cause, you shouldn't be held completely liable for your phone somehow downloading 20gb per day.
Though, echoing the shock of others, damn, $750 for 30gb? How the hell is that a thing? Here in the US, data overages among most providers are $10/GB. Yours are $25.

I did, there was nothing they could do. I didn't even tell them, and they didn't ask, if I was rooted. I was rooted though. I do believe it is my fault I just can't believe how excessively they screwed me sideways.
I attached a screenshot of the bell website for data pay per use.
I also checked my actual details of that phone bill and I was actually only over 8.26 GB. When I seen the bill I guess I instantly forgot I upgraded to 25 GB plan to try and stay with in the limit, but I still went over. And the extra charges were actually only 570. I guess I must have had a missed bill or 3.. Still excessive though. Once I pay that off I'm definitely switching away from Bell.
