Warning about tweetdeck beta! - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Firstly sorry if this is in the wrong place. Just wanted to ensure its in a place obvious to folk so they get the warning.
Secondly after installing tweetdeck on my phone I let it run for about a day and a half. However after that short time I noticed my battery was suffering quite badly. So I took a look around my stats and also noticed that in that short time the program had used no less than 74mb of data!!! I rang my colleague who also installed it and he found it had used 100mb. And a fair bit of battery.
He has a nexus one I have a milestone. We went sniffing around their forums and found a few other users complaining of the same issue. So we've uninstalled for now. We've posted something up on their forum but as of yet no reply. Needless to say that sort of data usage is unacceptable. Especially when alot of carriers are getting rid of unlimited plans.

Its running constantly. Updating as new feeds arrive. Yes its going to eat up data and battery.

I take it you didnt bother to read my whole post? no? didnt think so. Regardless of the fact its constantly updating it shouldnt eat nearly 75-100mb in two days. My bbc news, facebook, and gmail are all running constantly but they use a few mb every few days. get a clue.

sounds bad ... is there an answer of the devs now?

well they've responded to our thread and have gone away to test it. We'll see I guess.
this is the thread on the official forums.
http://support.tweetdeck.com/entries/239273-over-use-of-data?page=1#post_347227

How do you see how much data a particular program uses?

there are apps on the market place that will monitor and tell you.

or you call *#*#4636#*#* - there you can have a look on monitored apps

Engadget: Android sends texts to wrong people, murders your family while you sleep

http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/31/android-still-has-horrible-text-messaging-bugs-thatll-get-you-f/
Is this really a widespread problem, or is it more Engadget anti-Android propaganda?
Not sure but I haven't experienced it in almost a year of using several android devices.
I use Handcent, so I have no idea what they're talking about.

Read the source links.
For the record, I love android. I hate all the anti-android crap going around. But I have experienced this before. One time upon booting up, my contacts were all mixed up with the wrong numbers. It was so weird. My friend became my dads name on there and another friend became my cousins whom I never texted. So when they texted me I saw the names and was like wtf? How do they know about (whatever we were chatting about earlier). Took another reboot and everything was fine. I also experienced the phone clicking on the wrong thread that I pressed, that definitely happens. I've learned to double check who Im texting.
Is this fixed by using a different SMS app then? Apparently it happens with e-mails, too, but only with the default e-mail app.
I have been using an HD2, that dual boots WM 6.5 and Android 2.2 Froyo, never had this problem.
My daughter uses a Behold 2 and sends and receives over 16000 text messages per month, and never a problem like this.
I think it's more hate against Android, since it is starting to get a strong hold of the smartphone market.
I'm also sure it's a lot of user error too.
Google just updated this to critical, so I'm guessing it'll be patched pretty soon.
It happens to me at least twice a week. I actually switched to handcent it was so bad. Thankfully I never had anything truly embarrassing go to the wrong person, but I have had some confusing moment...The worst was when I carried out a long conversations with the wrong person... The problem happens when you click on the new message item in the notification menu without actually opening it up through the messaging app. You see the correct reply thread, and it is only when you press send that you realize it sent to the wrong person. This is very real, but I used to think it was just my phone.
lmao. This is just amusing.
The ONLY time I ever got the bug was when I received a new message, I used the drop down menu bar to view the message, and this was on a beta froyo build. Any time I went through the regular messaging app, everything was fine. Last I read in a forum long ago burried, only time the bug happened was when you used the drop down...
I've used Android since the G1 was released and don't remember ever experiencing this issue. But if it is an issue, then it needs media attention to get Google to fix it as quick as possible. Although, the problem is getting the fix out, since you know, all these carriers and manufacturers take forever to get an OTA out.
Google said:
Hi all,
I want to let everyone know that we are actively investigating this issue, and we hope to have an update soon. Obviously, this is a very difficult to reproduce bug.
Rather than replying "me too", you can star this issue to follow it. Just saying "me too" just obscures the useful information in this bug, and makes it harder to fix. Of course, if you have useful information to add to the bug, such as a system dump or an insightful analysis of the code, feel free to update the bug with your observations.

I can believe 16,000. My 17 year old sister has about 10,000 a month. Unlimited texting, ftw.
I've been using Android since the release of the HTC Dream in Canada and I've never ever ever ran into this problem, and most of the ROMs I've ran have been beta or experimental. I'm thinking they're blowing it out of proportion.

When we were on Verizon, one month it was up to 39,000. I was floored. That is when I was like thank goodness for.....Unlimited Texting FTW!
Still no problems like this.
I've never had this problem and Goggle has made a press release and said they are having a hard time replicating it. I think that there could be an error that happens once in a blue moon, but I think most of the time it's just user error.

Yeah sometimes when I get a message I click on the thing in the drop down menu and it takes me to another thread, but I'm pretty sure the point of clicking that button is just for it to get you to the messaging app. Also sometimes I go to the messaging app and click the top thread and it takes me to a different thread. So this bug is true at times.

"Your Phone Is Too Slow!" in notification

Had a weird thing happen the past couple of days. This is on a bone stock HTC Inspire. I get a star in the notification area. When I expand the notification it says 'Your phone is running too slow' or something similar. When I click on it, it takes me to speeddroid.com or somewhere similar. I closed the browser before it could go any further. I looked at the apps and nothing seems out of place. Any thoughts?

Sounds like you've got an app that's sending ads to your notification bar if you google it you should find some ways to get rid of it

Lovely. The spyware cleaners have migrated from pc's to android phones.
Check your running services also, if you haven't already. If nothing looks out of place in apps, it's probably hiding in services, which probably still could be traced back to some app you've installed.
There's nothing built-in to a bone-stock phone that would do that.

You've got malware son
I know that this is malware. Also it is my wifes phone She has had it a week and she has already managed to jack it up. Ive had my Atrix since launch and have had no problems.
I will check the processes and see if I notice anything. She thinks the only adverse thing was accidentally clicking adds in Words with Friends. Tried a couple Anitvirus/Spyware apps from the market but everything said the phone was clean.
Also in her pictures, it downloaded some ads for vodka, and has some buttons for a UI... Very odd.
Edit: AirPush was able to tell me what was sending crap out. Pentris (Not Quite Tetris) was the app. I took a look and sure enough in the market it states it pushes out an ad a day. I showed my wife, told her she needs to read about the apps a bit more. So word to the wise, read about the app before you install!

I have found with computers and phones alike, that sites/apps/services that are targeted toward women and people in demographics less likely to be tech savvy are riddled with malware. My wife spends 15 minutes on the computer looking for recipes or knitting patterns and the thing is on fire, gasping it's last breath, while I spend huge amounts of time doing things of a highly technical, sometimes questionably legal nature with nary a problem. I guess it's because people who know what they're doing are unlikely to install something "because the internet told me to," so the jerks who make that stuff don't waste their time on our sites. So, all that to say, I try to pay attention to what she's doing. It saves me a ton of time down the road.

Just talked to VZW CSR: new update for battery issues in phased release today

Title is pretty much all of the info that I have.
I called verizon to complain about the battery life on my TBolt, to see if they would drop ship me a new battery. No love on that. They said to run automated task killer and turn off WiFi and 4G as applicable.
But, one little tidbit that they told me was that they are rolling out yet another OTA update which should theoretically help the battery issues. It may just be a setting to bias to CDMA for data and more aggressively toggle LTE.
Anyway, watch your update counters, and report back if you get it, and if it helps.
As I am now running BAMF 1.8.6, I would have to pay attention to the developer community to see if this release is actually a valuable enhancement, and if it will be adopted for our non-official ROMs.
He probably just told you that to get you to stop complaining.
I'm just kidding. Hopefully this is true.

Lol, I doubt they would release another OTA update so quickly. We all know Verizon's update cycle is like watching a snail run a marathon. Hopefully he didn't say it just to get you off the phone quickly and preserve his call times.

I was skeptical as well. I said "Are you sure that you're not referring to the updated radio release of 7/8?" he said that it was coming down the pipe this week and was different. he may have been a 'tard and not a valid source of info.
I would say, feel free to disregard this information. True that, just because it came from a verizon tech, it doesn't mean he knew anything.
So your title and original post says today...yet your last message says he said "coming down the pipe this week" so which is it? Today or sometime this week..or in near future?
The fact that the person recommended a task killer likely means that person has no clue wtf is going on.

He said seeding today in unnamed markets, and continuing. As in: today, tomorrow and the next day would all be contained under the heading of "this week."
Take it with a grain of salt. I won't see it, being off the stock ROM.

Thanks for the tip, but I'll believe it when I see it. Most CSRs will say anything to get you off their line.

I would give almost anything for a battery improving OTA...
4G LTE went live yesterday in my city but damn does it kill my battery. Fun to play with, but damn...
I've had my TB for a week now. I turn off 4G most of the time but leave GPS and WiFi on all the time. I unplug it from the charger at 6am and at 6pm I still have 60% battery left. Is that average?
I do use juice defender so I think that helps.

Well using juicedefender skews things a bit. Knowing some of your settings for it is important. When I used JD I liked the setting where when the screen goes off it cuts the mobile data connection and turns it back on every fifteen minutes to sync everything. I saved a lot of battery with this method and I do think juicedefender is a good tool for preserving battery.
However, once I got an extended battery I had no more need of JD as with EVERYTHING running(everything syncing, GPS, BT, screen at 100%) I can get 16-19 hours depending on how heavy I use the TBolt that day.
With 4G+extended battery, I got barely 8 hours today, again with EVERYTHING on and syncing, with screen at 100%(I don't believe in gimping a mobile device). I myself may have to go back to JD with 4G left on but timed out when screen goes off...it's a form of gimping but one of the least objectionable, imo, since at least the data connection turns on as soon as you activate the screen.
Thunderbolt support site looks diffent

This is your HOX on AT&T JB

So my wife's HOX has taken a nose dive in performance and battery life since taking the update to JB.
*Disclaimer* if you feel so inclined to help me, please don't sit there and tell me this is brought on by my wife being dumb. She's not rooting and ROMing like us, but she's not so bad that I'd recommend she use an iPhone. In other words, I don't think she is the cause of these issues.
Performance is laggy, especially with texting and web browsing on or off WiFi. She gets about 6 hours on a charge (100% to dead) with light/medium use. She has never complained about battery life or performance on ICS.
A few days ago I went into her phone and removed excess apps, and disabled the AT&T bloatware. Didn't help though.
Her HOX is completely stock...no launchers, custom browsers, or text messaging apps.
She's going to the AT&T store soon, but I doubt those goons will be able to help.
Does anybody have any idea what to do next to troubleshoot?
Duely blundered from my thunderdolt.

My wife's one x+ is laggy as hell.. SwiftKey runs like absolute ****. However could a quad core phone running the stock rom be so laggy?
Good luck with it

it's not your wife, i can tell you that. I'm having the identical issue. my HOX is bone stock bc it's a work phone and I can't root, so i went with the OTA for this. love th features, but the battery life has been halved on a good day.
it's due to wakelocks, as mentioned, and shows as though it's from maps. but really, some internet research has shown that many believe it's due to a media scanning function as well as the way that both google and 3rd party apps are using location services (which ends up being reflected as a "maps" app function. regardless, i have no idea what to do, but there are various suggestions regarding this...

http://code.google.com/p/android/is...D Type Status Owner Summary Stars#makechanges
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...s Owner Summary Stars&groupby=&sort=&id=40370
have a look and, as said eariler, get BetteryBatteryStats, or similar, and monitor the wakelocks.
There are ways of fixing this, but they require rooting to stop various things from running in the background.
Myself, I have excellent battery life on JB; I can almost go two days without a charge.
I have pretty good battery life on JB also (knock on wood) the only time it tanks when I'm in a very poor coverage area, then the phone gets a little hot too but disabling "syncing" brings it back to normal usage. You might wanna try that. Also there's a Qualcomm made app in the play store that helps with battery life and also allows you to customize the syncing.

Maybe I'm being a noob, but how does this RUU help when we're talking about no root or S off?
Duely blundered from my thunderdolt.
RUU is basically flashing everything all over, including the radio, kernel, etc.
I had similar problems with my HOX prior to the update, and a factory reset took care of the problem. I could normally get about 16 hours out of the phone during the week, and still have juice in the tank when going to sleep. Then one day something was misbehaving, and the phone died in about 8 hours, with hardly any use. I think that it's more of an HTC thing...they need to be punted every now and then. Personally, I've had very good battery life since the update, and things have run very smooth (except for G+, but it think that's a G+ thing), but I find that I have to reboot the phone about once a week to flush the cache (since HTC can't seem to execute proper memory management on their devices) when things get bogged down.
Sounds like I need to do a reset then, and possibly reflash the OTA (which I can do without root access, right?).
Thanks for all the info chums. It's good to know that I'm not the only one, and that we can still make use if this awesome device.
Here's hoping we get another way to root and S-off.

reflash the new ruu not the ota.

What's wrong with a bit of bloat??? I'm ok, I'm ok even with Root and STUFF

All right, I'm rooted, have safestrap, xposed, wanam and I'm rocking with Beans town. AKA beanstown106 ROM. Even still I have a ton of bloat and presently I'm at 9hrs of battery usage, 1 hour and 10 min of screen time and I have 29 minutes of voice calls! OK, ok guess where my battery is at???
84%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Say what? My app count with Titanium is 109 (yes I'm an app junkie) and I have over 3,000 contacts with pages and pages of notes on each, YET, I'm at 84%.
Somebody help me, Why am I searching for more? I mean this in just an addicted flasher question. This S5 is really the bomb. I had a S4 but after a bad golf round, and other stuff and I took a hammer to it on the glass face until it looked like toast and then (I cant' believe I'm telling ya'll this I bent it in half) yep...crap that would have made a great video to post, maybe even viral. On craigslist I found a local Verizon employee who had a "new S5" and I mean right out of the box for $375 (no upgrade as I'm unlimited data etc and use about 15gb per month) and I have this kind new phone now. I really thought I would never upgrade to the S5 from the S4 because they seemed virtually the same but I was wrong. I'm really liking the S5, ESPECIALLY now that we have Root and Recovery. I'm just hoping that I do not have another bad round of golf, and that has me worried! :crying::crying::crying:
So the reason for this post is to ask, what's the big deal with getting all the bloat off of the device. I know I searched and searched and flashed every new Rom that's on the development site so far as of today, (I use the Safestrap stock slot without worry as I have Odin and a lot of resources to recover and major backups) but I'm back to Beans and I'm happy. This was the first Rom to get the S5 working on the table, and it's not de-bloated much at all, but dang, look at my battery life. Excellent...and I can still use Allshare, baby crying detector, Verizon tones and about 400 other apps available (that I know I'll never use) and on and on. So what I say or ask is why I need to keep searching for the most streamlined ROM????. I'm at 84% after 9 hours!

Disclaimer in fine print...Please take no offense to this post, I know I need flash rehab but it's a general question that do not have an answer for?
Therapy anyone?

:crying::crying::crying:

nice rant lol. thing is, not everyone is an app junkie lol. and where you really test the battery life is with screen on time as that uses the most battery..
So my answer is that everyone has different tastes..
My question to you is this: When you press the recents button and then task manager, what does your RAM usage look like?
With all those apps i imagine you have less than 1gb free for sure. System ram allows the phone to work faster the more ram you have available.
Also, the leaner the rom the more storage space you have for apps youll actually use.
I for one would rather install useful apps from the play store vs having baby detector and bloat apps ill never use..
To each their own
Rant over lol

Point well put..., and thanks for the response. I'm still in WTF mode and just ranting. However with Titanium my Rom says 3.14 GB (816 MG free) on System Rom. I know it's been much lower free with room than that in the years past but yet I've never had a memory issue. So I'm with you " to each their own"
Warning, I've had a few shots today (ok many shots) so from a personal matter I am on a rant...this just seem like the best forum for social contact for my passion...Phones (probably owned about 40+ over the past 17 years, and no I usually do not take a hammer to them, LOL)
PS...I never had children but the "baby detector" app may be the coolest app in the world! Who knew.
Oh and one more thing for all...THIS IS JUST A PHONE, but I'm still not convinced of that as maybe it's the whole part of my life, dang. :cyclops:
