[Q] Can flashing without unlocked bootloader break my device? - General Questions and Answers

Hi all!
I've had my galaxy s3 for about two months, and now I'm thinking about flashing a new kernel on it. I don't want to flash a new rom yet, only a new kernel. My model is gt-I9300 and I'm running cf root 6.4 with a stock kernel. My problem is that I have no idea if my bootloader's locked or not. So my question is can i brick my phone if I flash on a locked bootloader? And if my bootloader is allready factory unlocked, will I damage my phone if I try to unlock it by using hacks?
Thanks a lot and sorry for any silly questions (This is my first time doing this)

the s3 shouldnt have a bootloder at least i dont think so ....but to unlock it you would have to make a profile with samsung to unlock it and ...if its locked it wont allow you to flash anything it wont break it but it might brick it

What bootloader do I have?

Hi guys,
How to check which bootloader i have? I got it from ebay, had already been updated to jb, dont know if it came like that from company or not. Use asus unlock apk to unlock the bootloader.
I'm asking because I want to install TWRP and root it and install custom rom...I'm reading guides and im a bit lost about jb and non-jb bootloaders and stuff.
I'm not new to flashing as im still using galaxy s and you know Samsung support sucked hard on that one.
Thanks!
If you had JB from stock, you have JB bootloader

[Q] Root only

Received SGS3 "SCH-I535MBCVZW" Developer Edition which should be Carrier & Bootloader unlocked
Unit has v4.0.4
I'm a bit confused of which item in the guides I need to do and which i don't. Mainly I don't understand what give this phone Dev. Edition status and what would cause it to lose that capability.. don't care about carrier unlock but the bootloader being unlocked I think would be handy.
I think Root is all I'm after but not sure the order to get there as I'm not sure what make this phone a Dev.Edition
Do I activate then let verizon update to 4.1.1 or do something else
Once at 4.1.1 then put SuperSU on SD Card and do what.. guide would me Flash the VRALEC bootchain but don't think that's what I should do.
To just use SuperSU I need the custom recovery screen.. confused!
Any help would be great.. most of my confusion is the fact I bought a unlock bootloader not sure how to keep it that way.
Much Thanks

Should just need to flash recovery of choice and then flash the SuperSU zip in the thread. Bootloader is already unlocked. That is only difference for that phone. Need to do some research but Verizon should not be able to lock it with update or it will not update. Not sure. Would check sites like SamMobile and Samsung to see what is required for update. If it locks then that was a lot of money for nothing but I doubt that Verizon can lock it.

Unlock Bootloader...

Hey guys, im new to this forums so first of all, hello everybody.
so, i have this xperia l, and im not new to android devices, and i want to flash a kernel and a rom (more specificly, thunderzcap and ios7)
the problem is, i cant unlock my bootloader. In that screen after you type that weird combination of numbers in the dialer it says that i just cant do it (not allowed). I read it somewhere that i need my simlock code and something else, but according to what i know (and i dont want to believe t) this means it is permantly locked.
So anyone here knows how to solve it? I would defenitly love to unlock the bootloader so i can flash a kernel... or im stuck with my phone? i know there are other roms but it isnt the same thing...
Thanks in advance
If it's locked there is no going around it. So answer is no, if it says on the phone that bootloader is locked you can't unlock it. And there are NO roms that work with locked bootloader. For you to be able to flash a ROM on it you must have unlockable bootloader.
Sorry to give you bad news but that is way things are in your case.
Nothing you can do.................for now.
If we can get CWM going on the phone, we can flash packages. From there, if this can be extended to our phone, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2595238 then we can run CM variants on top of stock, and thus there is hope for the locked bootloader people, like myself, hopefully.

well my friend sry but you can't restore this code
most of devices like samsung, motorola etc they have.... lets say a key for the bootloader(is the door) and this key if you root your device
breaks and the half key stays inside the door hole to reminds you that the key is broken(the devicesis root/unlockbootloader).
so if you root any motorola device the code state goes
automatically 2 and stays like this, you can flash again the stock rom and relock the bootloader sure
but the code stays 2 for ever.
i hope to help you

I'm not exactly sure what you are saying, but I think the jist of it is how do you relock the bootloader... the answer is you cannot, once it is unlocked it will always report as unlocked, even if you reflash stock and find a way to relock the device.
When you unlocked your device, it was plainly stated in the disclosure on the website that once the bootloader is unlocked, it is irreversible.
yeap

YEAAA we say the same think, but i use an othey way to say it.
i say in the end you can relock the bootloader (more or less) when i say this i mean that you put some partitions back in boot loader
so when you flash the stock rom you can take any ota update, but the main bootloader is unlock always.
i know that form my old moto g2gen, moto x2013!!!

You could relock the bootloader on older Motos, but not anymore... Actually, it can be relocked but it will never report as locked or relocked, it will always be reported as unlocked. I don't how to be more plain in describing this.
And yes, you can take an OTA when unlocked, as long as you have a stock ROM and recovery and your bootloader is the correct version for your ROM. If your bootload and ROM are out of sync (ie. you have a Marshmallow bootloader and a Lollipop ROM), if your bootloader and ROM are out of sync, you could potentially get into a hard bricked situation.
ohh!!

Once I sent my hard bricked phone to Motorola. I had unlocked the bootloader and done the stupid mistake of sideloading an older version and upgrading to a newer, but still older version. When it came back, it said it was Status Code 0.
Wonder how they did it.

They flash the eMMC chip (internal storage chip) directly... If you could get the right image you could possibly do it yourself with a few hundred to thousand dollar investment in a proper JTAG flashing unit.
Key would be getting the right Image, this would be far more than just a normal stock fastboot image, and is probably generated on the fly per device due to differences in serial number, IMEI, etc. These types of images don't get leaked out.

You unlocked the bootloader... It doesn't matter if you actually changed anything else or not. Once it's been done, this status code can never go back to 0. If the status code is 2 and you didn't unlock the bootloader, then someone else did.

No I didn't.. I don't even know how to.. I just found out about recovery mode.. Wait wait before i say that.. How do you unlock boot loader? Turning developer mode on? Going to recovery menu? I've never hard reset it.. Just soft or doing new device. You said it could work fine for a while then shirt out? Like guy I bought from did and then I bought used for couple years and then went tits up?

You unlock the bootloader with a series of steps that includes submitting a code to Motorola and getting an unlock code back... Performing it forces a factory reset as well. It's not something you can do by accident.
The issue with Status Code 2 was that an official update could have detected that and refused to update properly or done something worse... That never happened.
If everything is working fine, the status being 2 isn't important, it just means the previous owners had unlocked the bootloader and likely rooted or otherwise modified the phone.

How to downgrade to oneui 3.0 or 2.5 from oneui 3.1

hello guys , i need some help .
my device is s10e,G970U1 with unlocked bootloader. today i flashed the bl,ap,cp,and csc from oneui3.1 by odin ,and i get a locked bootloader ,so i want to downgrade to the unlocked bootloader,is here anyway to do that .
maybe i do not need the twrp but magisk is a necessity ,but i cannot flash the patched ap in odin ,what can i do now .
i just unblocked the bootloader at feb 14 ,and now i can not use it ,i am not felling well lol.
I haven't figured it out - trying to flash TWRP or flash the Magisk AP soft bricks. The UI 3.1 bootloader version is 5, and the old one is 4 and it won't let you downgrade since it is, technically, locked now. Though KNOX is still obviously tripped, so samsung pay still doesn't work on my watch.
I don't think it can be unlocked again.
G9700 Snapdragon with OneUI 3.1 and bootloader 5 is working with Magisk v22 and OEM unlock too...

If bootloader is same that you want to downgrade to then yes. If your bootloader upgraded from let's say U1 to U2 or S1 to S2 then no you cannot downgrade back to U1 or S1. And on 3.1 on some devices you do lose the bootloader unlock I believe.

Samsung pay didn't work because Knox was tripped, and it still doesn't work on my phone even after being re-locked.
Given the update apparently bypasses the token used to unlock the bootloader, I think we are SOL. People waited years for such an option, and apparently Samsung is working to lock that down.
Now I need to consider if I want to drop $350 for a new S10e still on original firmware, and then another $75 to unlock. I suppose if I can get $150 for my current phone that's not an awful deal.

They are out there. Some new and refurbs for $250-$350.
In any event, I had mixed feelings about rooting in the first place. I pretty much only used it to limit constantly charging my phone to 100% every night. Not going to throw any more money at a phone already over 1.5 years old. A few years from now, I'll probably regret losing root.
hello, I have Galaxy S10E (Snapdragon) SM-G970W with bootloader v6, can anyone help me to unlock this so I could able to flash custom from, TIA.
