How To Make A Custom Rom With Root Explorer - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

How To Make A Custom Rom With Root Explorer
Hello Budding Developers,Today I am going to teach you how to make a custom rom for android. In this thread i will only show you how to modify stock rom and not how to build from scratch....as even i dont know how to build from scratch yet.Much of this guide is skippable as most of it is meant for n00bs and new developers. This can also be implemented on pc but it mostly concentrates on building via root explorer.
What you Need
Root Explorer
Patience
Base Rom
Rooted Phone
Common sense
Procedure
1.Firstly unzip the base rom.If you dont have a base rom then just copy your phones firmware onto the sdcard onto a folder named after your rom.if you have a base rom then just unzip to the folder.
2.Now if you used a custom rom then skip this step.otherwise, create a folder called META-INF(in capitals). In the meta folder create a folder called com.in com, create google folder. In google create a text file called updater-script.

Where are the rest of the steps...?

Step 2: ?
Step 3: Profit

...annnnd thennnnn?

More steps coming soon....i had my exams

OMG this is exactly what i was looking for!! do you have the rest of the steps???

[DEV][TUT][WIP]Brew your own stock-ROM-based Galaxy Y ROM (for Windows)

Hello! As promised to some members of the board, here is my long diary of GG-ROM's journey.
Prequisites:
Your Samsung Galaxy Y (D'uh!) with the following applications installed:
Terminal Emulator
Root Explorer or an Android File Manager that reads the root directory.
Click to collapse
A USB cable for your SGY
A computer with Microsoft Windows (preferrably 32-bit)
dsixda's Android Kitchen installed in your computer
Activity 1: Getting the files needed for brewing (I just love Starbucks, that's why brewing is used instead of cooking. :-D):
1.1. Make some modifications to your phone that stick to the ./system/ folder (e.g. Root access and SuperUser; BusyBox; and whatnot).1.2. Get your current kernel. (Thank you, Skin1980 for sending this to us!) [Source thread]
1.2.1. Open Terminal Emulator and execute the following commands:
Code:
su
dd if=/dev/block/bml7 of=/sdcard/boot.img
Note:
Skin1980 said:
Write the commands exactly as written and get your attention in the second command. It writes "BML7" not "BM17" but you have to type in lowercase letters letter. So "bml7", OK?
Click to collapse
1.2.2. You'll get a copy of boot.img to your phone's SDCard.1.3. Using the file manager of your choice, copy the ./system/ folder to your SDCard.1.4. On your PC, create a folder named "WORKING_(put ROM name)". Note that the WORKING_ part is essential in the Kitchen and continue the folder name with anything you want (e.g. WORKING_GINGERBREAD_DXKL2). Then copy the extracted ./system/ folder and boot.img onto that folder. Also, have a backup of that as well.Sure, there are other methods out there but this is what I did.
Activity 2: Setting up dsixda's Android Kitchen. Official thread.
2.1. Download and install the following (Follow the succession as it is. Installing Cygwin first before Java Development Kit will give you troubles or hard times):
2.1.1. Java for Windows. (just follow the Free Java Download link).
2.1.2. Cygwin. Unzip this and follow the instructions in the "kitchen_readme.txt" file to install a customized version of Cygwin. - dsixda
2.1.3. dsixda's Android Kitchen. Follow "After following the setup for the kitchen, how do I use kitchen?"part of this post. Before proceeding to step 5 of that procedure, read below.2.2. Put your base ROM (the WORKING_(put ROM name) folder you've created during Activity 1) on C:\cygwin\home\(your user account name)\kitchen\original_update. Proceed with step 5 on the procedure.
2.3. After step 5, you have all systems go for modifying the ROM for your personal usage!
Under construction...
And another one under progress...
coool bro
nice tute!
Regarding bout copying the system files you can try the droid explorer http://de.codeplex.com/ to copy those files. Just remember the phone has to be rooted. (Sadly I can't test it with this phone if it works perfectly enough. I sold my SGY... run out of dough. lol)
wow. this is something i wanna do. ill try this one as soon as you complete posting all the details.
I've been waiting for this! Keep it coming, bro!

C'mon! I got a life too. I got a research venture, a parliamentary debate (my team won BTW), a seminar lecture (on integrated library systems), household chores, and to eat and sleep too (not to mention that I can't achieve three meals and more than four hours of sleep a day). All in just one hell week. Well, it's a Sunday so be on your guard, I'll try to post something here. Patience dear.
All right but any idea how to fix that error?
Anyways i have already made my own ROM but thanks for those removal terminal codes. And also how to get the system files to work with the dsixda kitchen

A complete noob Help me

Guys I am a complete noob
and i am bored by the orignal look of android
I need something new
My friend also has an android phone. So he rooted that deodexed, new rom
So i need to ask can i root this phone ?
Which rom is the best to install after rooting ?
i upgraded my phone to xxkpq with my friends help. Now i dont know what to do?
So please help me
hey dude u can try to install. a good kernel with cwm (clock work mod)....a very important tool to customize your phone....then download a custom rom of your choice from the development section (see that ur firmware matches that of the rom) ....follow the instructions there and you will have a full customized phone as most c-roms are pre rooted and deodexed .....when you learn more and get used to the phone you can try miui or cm (but that is for later ...) .......since ur on kpq u can try Poseidon or vurrut roms (Ive used them and they're nice)....
Its Simple
i am using Poseiden's ROM
How to Install it :-
Backup ur apps, Contacts, Messages.
a) U'll need CWM (i use [CF-Root] by Ganesh u get here for XXKPQ)
1) Flash this *.tar file as a PDA in Odin
b) Downlad Poseiden ROM from here or here
1) Copy this zip file to ur external SD Card
2) Goto Recovery Mode Install the zip file from ur external SD Card
3) after installation setup will reboot to recovery mode, wipe Cache & DALVIK CACHE
Done
Can i install miui or,cm7 ? My friend has miui and i like it very much

How to make a rom from stock rom
As you PM me and asked me to show you how to make a rom from stock rom, here it is:
1.You need rooted phone and Root Explorer
2.Acces system files and extract them into a new folder into your sd card.
3.After exctracting, copy them into your pc.
4.For file 1 you need to copy custpack, boot.img, recovery and check_data_app, and also create 2 empty folders:data and system. You need META-INF,too. Give a name to file 1(ex:my rom file 1)
5.For file 2 you need to copy data and system (from the system files, not the ones you created for file 1),also you need META-INF,installbusybox and logo.bin. Give a name to file 2 (ex:my rom file 2)
6.Create 2 archives (zip): file 1 and file 2.
That's all,now you can try it!
Download "files mod rom+Root Explorer",unzip, copy them:

Both, Jeffta and Gradu is not a rom is the stock rom customized.Hey jeffta when you make ics or jb transfered on this phone then is a rom, made it to you.Any stock rom is the best for now.sorryfor my bad english.
Not a copy!
Like an information for you,if you have doubts, this is not a copy of jeffta's rom,it's made by me from my ot-991's original rom.I didn't tell that my rom is better or worse than jeffta's,i only uploaded for you to try it and enjoy it.So,if you think my rom is better, then use it,if you think jeffta's rom is better, then use that one.Just stop blaming me and appreciate our work and the time we are losing for making new roms and new things for you to enjoy them.
Thank you all!
*For the ones interested, wait for a new rom,i'm working on it (also not a copy of jeffta's rom).
Yup, it's the Jeffta's rom!

Upgrade to 4.2.x .... How ?????

Hi XDA Guru`s,
I have tried to search for a proper guide which will tell me how to move from 4.1.x to 4.2.x.
There are many roms but all say they are without boot.img, some say xxxx kernel is needed etc.
So someone please put up steps that say how and what to do.
I am not asking you to put up links or upload the required files, zips, .img files here but aleast write it down so as to have a proper step by step instructions.
I am sure we all can search for files on google/xda provided we know what we need to look for.
Please take this request of a less mortal person and shed some light on me.
Thanks
[Guide] How to Port Rom
This is Basic
HOW TO PORT ROM
1. Download base rom (designed for your phone) and port rom (the rom you want to port)
2. Open them with 7-zip (no need to extract)
3. Delete app, framework, fonts and media folders in BASE rom and move the app, framework, fonts and media from PORT rom to BASE rom
4. Your rom is now ready. Boot into recovery, Wipe everything and flash the BASE rom. It should boot. If it does not boot then do the next step
5. Go into system/lib folder in both the roms and replace the libandroidruntime.so file
6. Remember the final rom is BASE rom which you should flash on the phone.

Hello brother....
I THINK THAT YOU SIMPLY ASKED FOR THE STEPS TO INSTALL A 4.2 ROM IF YOUR DEVICE IS RUNNING ON 4.1.x...
ITS REALLY EASY BRO!
FIRST ROOT UR PHONE AND INSTALL CWM RECOVERY(skip if already done.)
THEN DOWNLOAD THE ROM ZIP AND ANDIROXU KERNEL FOR 4.2 AND PLACE IT IN UR PHONE SD CARD.
GO TO CWM RECOVERY.
WIPE/FORMAT DATA...WIPE CACHE AND THEN GO TO ADVANCED MENU AND WIPE DELVIC CACHE.
THEN SELECT INSTALL ZIP FROM SD CARD>CHOSE ZIP FROM SD CARD AND SELECT THE ZIP AND INSTALL (OR FLASH IT)
THATS ALL.
THAN LOOK FOR THE ANDIROXU KERNEL YOU HAVE DOWNLOADED AND SELECT AND INSTALL IT.
BUT THIS TIME NO WIPES NEEDED.
THATS ALL. REBOOT AND YOU WILL HAVE 4.2 ON YOUR PHONE.

Hi I installed Dark nexus and it works gr8 expect for 2 issues that i have posted on Dark nexus forum also.
1. Dialer is misplaced keys --- 3 6 9 and # keys not showing completely.
2. lock-screen is also not aligned properly. - The lock as it can be seen has moved out of the screen also the network operator names are not center aligned, lastly the clock in 4.2.2 should be in the center here as we can see it is slightly towards the right.
Any comments ?

Download lcd density changer app from google play and set default dpi to 210 and reboot

PS: remember to take a cwm backup before u do something with system files
this case its not necessary but u never know what will go wrong so it is recommended

Thanks for taking time out to reply, i tried that but after applying the value the phone did not move ahead from the nexus logo screen, so had to end up restoring from backup.
later i installed go locker and Dialer apps and they seem to be working fine.
Thanks anyways.
