Do you get charged for USB teathering? - General Questions and Answers

I don't have a Ethernet cable connected to my computer and don't have a wireless adapter yet but saw i could use USB teathering, I turned on airplane mode and turned on WiFi thinking i wouldn't get charged, but I'm still not sure. AT&T is my carrier. Thanks!

If your phone is in airplane mode, then AT&T doesn't know you exist, and you should have no problem. Your signal would go from your computer via USB to phone, via wifi to router, to the internet. AT&T is out of the loop, and would have no reason to charge you for that (they wouldn't even know). If you want to be really sure, you can remove the SIM card first.

TF won't connect to PC via USB anymore

Hey folks,
I've been having a hell of a time getting my tf to connect to the pc via usb these last few days. No matter what I do it will not connect to any pc.
Drivers are installed fine and worked great in the past. The usb cable works fine with the charger and devices charges fine.
If I plug the USB into the pc and then into the TF the screen turns on, so it knows its there but refuses to allow communication between pc and tf on any computer I try.
In device settings USB tethering is greyed out and no matter what I try I cannot get it to allow me to turn it on. Shutdown, held button to reset, restarted pc's, notta.
I recently used NVFLASH to unroot my TF for an RMA that I never got around to doing. Now I want to root again but without the USB working I can't.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
No one else is experiencing this? Is my cord mucked? If so why does it still work for charging? Eeeeek! I'm freaking out here.

Is usb debugging turned on in the tf settings->application->development?
I have no idea what you're talking about with usb tethering in the settings...
Is the device being recognized by your pc? What operating system?
USB Tethering is greyed out on all TF's. If for sharing data service with another device and you dont have data service on the TF unless you have a dongle.
Have you tried putting into APX and checking. You don't boot the rom when using nvflash. Power / Vol + when booting
Yes, if you think about it Tethering is when you wish to pass your 3G connection be that either through SIM card or Dongle to another device.
If you don't have either a SIM Card with Data services (which you won't have) or a Dongle then it is only correct the Tethering option will remain greyed out.
Hey and thanks folks.
Neither of my PC's will detect my TF but both did just a few weeks ago.
Asus sync won't work either. In accounts/sync Asus sync is off and there is no way to turn it on. Don't know if this is normal or not.
I have USB debugging on but still it won't get detected. Restarted everything multiple times too.
I cannot enter apx mode however I had no trouble doing so before.
Like I said above i can still charge with my cord just no PC connectivity so I don't understand what's up.
As for USB tethering, when USB is plugged in it should allow me to select it (even though I don't want to) thus why I think the problem is related to the pad or cord not the PCs.
Thoughts?

This is not only annoying but it gets more and more confusing. I can connect my other Android devices to a PC and move files between the devices. I should be able to do the same with the Transformer and a PC.

Try new cable, the charging uses other pins/wires in the cable
Already ordered from ncix. Hopefully that's it or I'm out $45 with shipping.

Usb tethering is for sharing the data service on your TF. If you dont have 3g/4g service on your TF then it will not be available. Do you have a conflict listed in your device manager? I have had to reinstall the Asus suite twice at this point and manually remove the drivers from device manager

Phone not being seen by any PC

So this issue started a few days ago. Any time I plugged my phone in it would constantly connect and disconnect from the pc. I've tried multiple usb cables, ports, and the 3 PCs I have with the same result on each. Now when I plug it in, it is no longer being recognized by the PC, Odin, ADB, etc... It will charge but that is it.
I have a warranty replacement coming to me however I need to be able to get this one back to stock... Any suggestions?
Before anyone asks, NO it has never been wet, dropped, damaged in any way, set on fire, caught in a land slide, earthquake, what have you.. The phone itself functions perfectly fine. All drivers are up to date, none of my PCs configurations have changed. I have one I use specifically for app development and not even that one will see the phone.
I had the same problem. I used a different cable and it all worked better....now with that said it happened again so I flashed my phone back to stock and all was well.
Then went to flashing ROMS.

Really check out the micro usb cable. A bad cable will just about always allow a device to charge, but data transfer is another story. If you really have tried a few micro USB cables, then it the problem relies elsewhere. Try restarting both phone and PC, and if neither works, sounds like you have a busted port on the Skyrocket.
Thank you both for your responses. I am a PC technician so I followed my usual troubleshooting steps to figure this out. I narrowed it down to either all of my cables are bad (not a chance) or the phone is just f**ked (likely). Ah well ill have to try to use another way to force the stock firmware and recovery on here. Lol
HTC = Hate The Consumer
I use my old Nokia OEM USB cable. Connects with the right number of pins on the USB connection end. I'd check your USB cables for # of pins . Skyrocket uses 5 I believe. Also that there is sufficient power to your USB ports. Aka avoid front USB ports which could only be 4 pin....

When you plug the usb cable in, do you see the usb icon at the top left of your screen? I have to pull that window down to tell it to connect to pc, then confirm it again before mine connects. Mine doesn't auto connect on its own.
I see you've been a member for a few years so if its not connecting, that really sucks man. Hope you get it figured out.

Not running the AOKP ROM are you? The R3 build had an issue with this, and all AOKP will disable USB to PC if you enable 'fast charge' under ROM Control...
Good luck :S
According to what I've been reading you can try using the *#7284# code and setting the USB portion from PDA to MODEM and then back to PDA and it would kickstart the connection. No dice for me though. Ive been through 7 different USB cables already.. I am not about to go and buy one just to keep playing with it my other phones connect just fine using the same cables. No, I am running the latest Sky ICS

usb dongle and htc one x

Good day everybody...
I just got my usb OTG cable for the htc and it works very good with beanstalk 4.4
I also had a wifi dongle that occasionally used with my computer, can i get it to work with my htc one x at&t to get more wifi reception and get online?
The usb wifi dongle is a ralink series
Thanks to everyone for the responses
I'm thinking it depends on how much power the dongle draws.

But to put it to work, special features or modules on the kernel? Drivers or something? Or an app to make functional?
Have you researched?
Sent from my Evita
Here on xda just some for motorola atrix and other phones compilaring the drivers into the kernel nothing exactly with htc one x or the dongle it self and on google nothing, i can try just to put it and also to confirm if alone is going to install and search signal or be detected like a mass storage unit thats why my question
Ok, well if it isn't a mass storage unit it won't be detected as a mass storage unit. If you're on a Sense ROM the Sense kernels should OTG capability built in. And I believe the kernel in all current aosp ROMs have OTG capability built in too.
Sent from my Evita
I test just now with my memory stick of 4 gb and it is detected like mass storage, i even make some backup's of the last rom that i have on TWRP and make another one from the current that i have Beanstalk 4.4
I'll be connecting the usb wifi dongle but i dont know how is going to be recongzied (sorry if it wrong, little bit rusty with my english) as a wifi detecting dongle or just something detected but not functional.
If this is the case anyone knows of an app to handled this? Or terminal script? Or nobody has try yet
Just confirm something for me. Is this dongle going to transmit an internet connection through the usb connection or will it transmit a WiFi signal your phone can connect to? My understanding is that it will be the latter in which case all you need from the usb connection is power. Have you tried just connecting it to the phone yet?
Sent from my Evita
I already connected and needs power
My understanding is that the phone dosent pass voltage trought the microusb for that matter dosent light up the wifi dongle
I have to get a wifi dongle with some battery on theself
Probable test it with a router wifi modem plug to a power cord and get some signal trought that and get the cable that has ethernet conection with a usb on the other end and plug it to the OTG cable
That's very hard to understand. I need you to answer my questions. Is this device going to transmit an internet connection through the cable or is it going to transmit it wirelessly?
Sent from my Evita
Ok, sorry
My purpose is to get wifi signal through the usb wifi dongle, as is said before there's have to be some power to power on the dongle or a least with my dongle
That still isn't clear. You want the connection transmitted through the usb connection, not via WiFi signal?
Sent from my Evita
I want a wifi signal trought the dongle
Ok that still isn't specific because either way it's through the dongle, but I'm going to assume you mean through the usb connection. If the device isn't lighting up though I would assume that it isn't being recognised as a compatible device.
Sent from my Evita
No dosent show as compatible not even start the dongle

Asus Sl101 Debugging Mode problems

Hello there
Ive got a problem. I wanted to Root my SL101 (Firmware 4.0.3 Android) with Peri or THe 1 Click Solution. But the original usb cable only charged my device when I plugged in to power socket. BUt USB on PC didnt work. PC never found device, didnt search for driver and no "BLing" for USB device plugged in. So I ordered a new usb cable (not original, cause asus sl101 already 3 years old). The new cable worked. USB found on PC. Data transfer worked. Charinging over power socket worked, but no charging when connected to pc. When I enabled USB Debugging, it said "Device removed" and then "device started". But there was no deivce seen on computer. No "internal storage". So there is no possibility to transfer data and Root won't start cause it doesnt find device. I installed all driver (ADB driver, also tried Asus Pc Suite), but it doesnt work. Is my device broken or is it because of the cables? Are there any working cables on internet with better quality and supporting USB Debugging? The non original cable is from vhbw.
Is this a common problem with Asus Sl101? I searched for related problems. SOmeone also had problems with Asus original cable. It also charged plugged in to power socket but not with PC and Pc never fund USB conection, never searched for drivers. He ordered a new cable (original, cause his case was years ago) and it worked.
Any ideas how to get it work? Its not really important to root it though, but I wanted to buy Titanium Backup so I can save my apps, and I need root for it. There are f course plenty other apps needing root. Any advices?
Not sure about the data transfer error apart from lack of drivers, but the PC will not charge the tablet while it is running - at least for the TF101 anyway, the only way to get the PC to charge it is to either turn it off while its plugged into the PC and leave it overnight for trickle charge, or I think also if the tablet is in sleep mode, it will also trickle charge - but you have to use the main charger to get a fast charge into it - PC will only trickle charge

First of all, thanks for answering. I tried it, but when I plug in USB, Asus SL101 turns on. I won't charge turned off. It turns on automatically when I plug in USB to charge. And when its turned on plugged in on PC USB, as I explained before, it won't charge.
Somene know where I can get a working cable? Maybe an original working one? Asus SL 101 is maybe 2 or 3 years old know. Shouldnt there be still original ones left in shops? Actually it doesnt have to be an original one. A working one is fine, too. (Working means for me: USB, Charging, USB Debugging). So anyone knows good stores/internet offers (amazon, ebay...) for sl101 cables? Cause I really dont know which one is a good one.
Plug it in to USB and then turn it off, you won't see it charging, it is a very very slow process when you charge from PC (If it works the same as the TF101) - leave it overnight plugged in and turned off
Sounds like your cable is working fine, you get a data connection with USB debugging - so data side of the cable works, and you get a charge when you plug it into the charger, so power side of it is working too
It's likely drivers stopping you using the media transfer mode
eBay would probably be your best bet if you want another one
asusparts.eu sell some stuff too - fits SL101
http://www.asusparts.eu/en/Asus-KIT-AC-TF101
Ya actually I didnt want to complain. The cable really works fine, but I cant root cause USB Debugging Mode is found by PC, but showing no storage icons on computer. So Root Software dont find device and no data transfer works while it is in debugging mode. Could it be because of my device? Actually it was from germany and the firmware also was DE. But for updates, I had to change it to WW code. Maybe its cause of firmware. I really dont know. Its strange cause for everyone it works, only for me it doesnt work. So original cable was to begin with not working on usb pc. So I hoped the fake one would work full. *sigh*
Thanks for the link. I searched for only the cable (on the given link) and I found it without adapter. But its a pity, Im in germany and if they send the cable to me, I have to pay 46$ for the cable. For US people its 25$ (cause they dont have to pay oversea sending costs). If its also not working, so it would be a problem.. even warranty is expensive (sending back ~20$).
Is there a way to downgrade SL101 from 4.0.3 to Firmware Version 3.2 without using USB Debugging and root?
Case closed, Watson (I always wanted to say that)
I found the error. The cable is working now and USB Debugging working, too. Root was successful. I opened device manager and deleted Asus Epad Sl101 driver and plugged sl101 in. So windows had to search for drivers and it installed the right drivers. I dont know why preinstalled ADB Drivers didnt work, but now everything works.
Thanks for your effort
Great, yea sounded like a driver problem, pleased you got it working :good:

[Q] MotoG LTE won't charge with USB cable; Bug or Defective phone?

So I just received my MotoG LTE yesterday, and while at work, needed to charge it up. I plug a USB cable between the PC and phone, and the PC recognizes the phone, and I even setup USB tethering and try out the data connection. All's well as far as that's concerned.
I notice that the battery icon in the notification bar has a lightening bolt in it, but the battery is not charging (says Not Charging in the Battery section in Settings). I try another USB cable with the same results. I try it on another PC, same results. Using an AC powered adapter allows the battery to start charging, but won't charge from the PC.
I contact Motorola's online chat to inquire about the situation, and they ask me to go into the Developer Options section (which many of you know is hidden initially on this OS). I get into Developer Options and enable USB Debugging. BOOM! Charging via the USB cable from PC is now working!
I inform the chat rep that the phone is now charging, and mention that this bug needs to be fixed. She proceeds to tell me that it's not a bug, and that my phone is defective and I should return it.
My opinion is that this IS a bug, and another phone will exhibit the same issue. Anybody else experience this same USB charging issue?
I'll reply to/update my own thread.....
I just got off the phone with Motorola's support. Apparently the online rep I chatted with earlier didn't know squat. This charging issue is a known issue and slated to be fixed in the next OS release. As I guessed, my phone is not defective, and a replacement unit would behave the same.
So for those that are having trouble charging the phone via a PC, just enable USB Debugging mode and it will start charging.

Ah I see seems like a software issue to me if it was a hardware problem your phone would not charge at all either on ac or USB as it is a charging/data port on the phone.
