"Unlocking" Surface - Microsoft Surface

Any chance there may be some way to load the full windows 8 onto an RT tablet? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Surface RT is an ARM processor, so it cant run full Win 8.
I would be curious though if there will be any modding availabe on the Surface RT, once the XDA team gets their hands on it for awhile. I guess we would need an unlocked bootloader though

Some reviews have noted that the desktop file explorer is still available and the C:\Windows folder is accessible which surprised me somewhat, will have to see how much modification is possible.
Now however that Windows RT devices have secure boot active, so the Windows kernel must be signed, as well as drivers and modules with hardware access otherwise it gets blocked, in addition I believe all Windows RT tablets have TPM chips(I think that was it?) Which could complicate things further.

Not gonna happen.

We will unlock it and run exe files compiled for ARM. X86 apps can only be emulated and will be slow.

Where are you, preorder?!

When is the Surface gonna be available to get preordered in the US? It can't be much longer since the RT version is coming out in two months. Google and Android OEM's let their consumers preorder their tabs many months before release. COME ON, MICROSOFT!

I contact Microsoft Germany when we can preorder / get a sample ... last week and they have absolutely no idea when / if it will be launched here. Seems there is still no clear strategy about the product rollout.

I doubt they will do pre order, but I could be wrong.
However Microsoft has another Launch Event on Oct.25/12.
The day before Windows 8 will go on sale, and I will bet all info for RT will be made clear.
That on Oct 26/12 RT will sell at retail stores and the Microsoft Store....with 32 stores set to open that day.
New Stores set to Open
I'll be in line (the night before)!!!!! A friend of mine has also said he wants to go see what will launch.
I want it now in Germany!!!!!!!!

There was something about the ACPI (or whatever lol its been a while since i dealt with it) where it wouldn't want to boot ubuntu, and if it did it was unusable and my CPU and fan would be at 100 percent.
It was a linux kernel issue, not a ubuntu-specific issue.
Wireless was also a toughie for me, but I was able to fix that no problem.
I'd look around on newegg.com before buying that toshiba just so you can get a feel of what you get for around $600 elsewhere.
But yes, that laptop should have more than enough muscle to do what you want it to do.

As an amd user I love it. I have a quad core black edition and I can overclock to 3.6 without an issue. I do a lot of gaming so I run crossfire to. The only downside is that I've found that some software, mostly games, don't play nice with my gfx cards. But I feel you get more bang for your buck with amd. There is a difference between a quad core from amd and Intel. Intel will always beat out the amd card in something but they are close. Amd always wins in price though. Just my 2 cents

Looks great but I wouldn't count on running that on a thunderbolt....ever.
They've tried this before with Ubuntu for Android. It never got off the ground. They intended on dual booting Ubuntu on dual core gingerbread class phones but it never happened. There was supposed to be a dock that your phone went into and booted Linux on a monitor so it was like having a phone and computer at the same time. I like the idea of having full Linux support though. It will be interesting to see if calling through Ubuntu will be supported.

I believe the two antennas were for use on a carrier of your choice, since it comes without contract (even international).
Impractical probably for most. Ever since I got an android device (an archos) many years back I kinda wanted to be able to have a functional desktop experience. Having a note ii now I can basically already do that, whether im using a tablet multiwindow mod or the linuxonandroid app. That being said, there seems to be enough who want that kind of functionality. Would be even cooler to see somethin like that with a keyboard dock. Old idea that was tried on other phones.
I'd go as far as to say this is nothing like what's been done before.
I love it, would definitely buy it if it was coming out sooner, but I need a new phone now, not in 2014.
Never figured the price to be all that steep either, you 'muricans have gotten too used to carrier-subsidized stuff
Here in Norway an $800 price tag is normal for such a badass...

It's an Ubuntu touch phone that has the option to boot into android, with an android app compatibility layer for Ubuntu coming soon so you can still use your favorite apps when using u-touch. It also has a desktop mode where you can hook it up to a monitor and enjoy the full desktop version of Ubuntu.
The desktop mode is the reason for the specs, so it's literally a computer in your pocket. Thanks to so many ARM distributions out there, almost every single piece of software in the main Ubuntu repositories has been ported to ARM. Overall, for $800 you get an Android phone, and a desktop computer that fits in your pocket.

Soo true. Thays really what drew me. Im mean it really sounds like a high quality device and it wouod have to be to meet for both a high end android device and a very functional desktop computer. I can even imagine it being more, having the ability to be a laptop too.
I just read only people who support the development donation 775 will get the phone its not being publicly sold or distributed also the 2 antenna deal is one lte antenna is for the US the other is for functionality in EU if y'all want I'll link the article from indegogo which is the current most updated article.

Whether or not you like Ubuntu, you should hope that this 'experiment' exceed, doing so would surely drive something positive towards the mobile phone scene.
But will it get the newest android versions when they release like the nexus devices, or will it just update android in the same way as, say Sony does? That's probably the qyestion holding me back a little.

this phone wouldn't be commercially successful
At the beginning I thought the campaign is gonna be a huge success.. but looking at it now.. seems like a far cry from being successful. But would be cool to see a device that can dual boot android & ubuntu though:fingers-crossed:..
What do I think? Neat idea, not so great on the execution. The Android world is full of great-but-not-quite-there ideas, and this is a good one -- unfortunately the timing just isn't right.
Dual-booting is just way beyond the scope of what the average person needs or wants right now, in my opinion. Could it be useful? Definitely, if implemented and executed correctly. Maybe this is one of those product categories people don't know they want until they have it?

No <3 for Windows 8

I was given an HTC Thunderbolt from a friend. She's finally just gotten tired of the Sense BS and how screwed up this phone is as it comes from the manufacturer. I figured, being the tech savvy fellow I am, that I'd root it, unlock the bootloader and install a custom ROM, probably Cyanogenmod as I love their work. .....no dice. I have Windows 8 on a laptop that was given to me by my wife after my Linux machine went to the big computer shop in the sky. After hours of fruitless searches and downloads I broke down and called HTC. What do they tell me? There isn't a driver out there to make Win8 recognize my device. I tried HTC Sync, PDA Net and a million other options.....no dice. I've searched these forums inside and out, I know the rules, I abide by them to the T. But still, no dice. SO I ask the question that I can't seem to find an answer to, has anyone had any luck getting their Thunderbolt recognized in Win8? If so please tell me how.:good:
Your best bet would be to install Windows 7 or use a friend's computer.

Seeing how you got it second hand, that's my guess as I don't know what cable you have and you didn't mention trying several.
May wanna see about picking one up to eliminate that as the issue, if you haven't explored this already.

So I tried and tried everything with this thunderbolt. Finally I gave up on Windows 8, which I think Windows has too, and dug out my daughters Acer Aspire One and installed Windows 7. Wouldn't ya know it, all went well. Actually all went well with Windows 8 but I must have gotten a bad download when I obtained the RUU to downgrade to Gingerbread. Or maybe it was an operator error, around here there seems to be quite a few. Anyway, I am rooted with S-OFF so let the Flashing commence. I'm gonna look for a CM10 rom, wish me luck. Thank to all that helped, especially the fella who told me to switch cords, always a good idea when having problems.
