VZ throttling certain apps? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I live in the southeast and use WiFi tether on my phone, unlimited data plan, only 6Gb this month thus far. From this location I have a Slingbox setup on a 40mb/5mb cable connection and a computer with FTP setup.
Currently I am in Hawaii with a strong 4g connection at all times and...
When I try to stream my Slingbox onto my tablet I can only get 100kbit/s, bad quality. When I download a file to my phone from FTP, it starts at 300k/s and slows to 100k/s very slowly and consistently. However when I download file from Play Store I get 800-1.5Mb/s. When I stream from ESPN I get high quality as well. The internet speed test in Hawaii is very very fast. I remote logged in to my home computer w/ the cable connection and noted no slowdown there.
Based on the current threads about VZ's monitoring of packets, could VZ be throttling my apps from this location? I'm sure data from this location costs them more than stateside.
Its the strangest thing and I can't figure it out. Any ideas?

I've noticed tethering speeds on my device is much slower. A speed test told me I was getting 30+mb down but when I let my wife tether with her 3g phone to mine and run a speed test, she's only do 1.5 mb down. Didn't matter what app I used, built in, foxfi or wireless tether.
A Google search at the time resulted in few discussions. Hadnt looked at it sense. I would love a solution as well.

Fully utilizing internet connecting mode for bittorrent

[Win7]
When using the internet connection mode does the phone have a built in firewall or port blocker? My laptop was already connected to the internet through my home's WiFI internet and I was downloading off bittorrent using µTorrent. I was getting decent download speeds on my torrents, but almost nothing on upload. Knowing that the LTE network is more balanced and generally faster than my home network I connected my phone to my laptop via usb and selected internet connection mode.
At this time I noticed no difference and opened task manager to check network utilization. Task manager showed that my home network connection was being used and LTE was not being utilized at all. So I disconnected from my home network and waited for µTorrent to adjust to my phone's connection. After tinkering with some settings in µTorrent it showed the "!" at the bottom right notifying me that either the port I've selected is blocked or some other setting is stopping my connection from being used to it's full potential. I again check task manager and as far as network utilization goes it was around ~1% and my download speeds are far from what they should be, and far worse than when I was just on WiFi.
So I connect back to the WiFi and µTorrent starts behaving how it did before I tried to use my phone. Task manager shows more activity on the WiFi connection and still around 1% for the phone's connection.
My concern is how can I maximize LTE's potential when for bittorrent. Is there some kind of built in port blocker or firewall element? Or is it some kind of protection set up by Verizon and they know I'm using their network for bittorrent? I was getting consistent 5MBps Down and Up when I tested my laptop using internet connection mode, so network stability shouldn't be the issue. Any thoughts?
I haven't tested it, but I'd be willing to bet that the built-in internet sharing mode on the phone blocks certain ports. You could try using a tethering app like EasyTether or PDAnet.
Are you rooted? You could try Wireless Tether for Root Users, and see if you get any different results with that, too. I had some issues using VPN from my OG Droid because there were some blocked ports when using USB tethering, but once I rooted and started using Wireless Tether, all my problems went away. It'd be worth checking out. If you're not rooted, I would imagine that the wifi hotspot would act the same way (although it's only free for another week or so).
Sweet! Another person who's going to get us capped.

I'm sure they block ports, and to be honest, I sincerely hope they block torrenting on a cell phone. Why not use your wifi?
As others have already stated use your home internet connection as I like having unlimited data.

It's because LTE's upload speeds are superior to my home connection. And for people worried about getting capped, there is no way I could get within the 10% of users who are throttled.
^_^_^
It's people like you that are going to ruin it for the legitimate rest of us. There is absolutely zero reason you should be torrenting on your phone, thats what your home connection is for. As mentioned earlier I hope that they do block the ports as I love my unlimited data plan knowing that I don't have to check my usage every 3 minutes like I would with att and their 2gb limit.
So in short, stop doing what your doing and ruining it for the rest of the U.S.

I didn't realize it was such a big deal. Especially since it's a service I pay for, and I wasn't planning on torrenting the entire internet.
Since there are so many concerns of losing unlimited data, I'll think twice before using my phone's network to do any heavy downloading or uploading.

First off you are not paying for the Mobile Hotspot service it is free until May 15th.
Second as of right now there is no real threat of losing the unlimited plan. Verizon has not said anything about taking it away and as of right now you could up and download 100gb of data and Verizon may say nothing. The problem is that we just don't know. We could wake up tomorrow and all have capped plans (As it is in the contract we all signed when we bought our phones Verizon can change the details of the data plans basically at any time they want) Yes there is like a 1% chance of this happening at the PR Verizon would get from this would most likely run them into the ground but the thought is still out there. And for most of us who only use ~5gb of data per month or less just don't want to worry about that odd month when maybe some new series comes out and they use 50gb.
TLDR: As of right now its more of just a fear of losing it than anything else and not really something to be too worried about ATM.

There is a difference in using a phone to web browse, or to watch a movie or whatever, and maxing it out 24/7 and saturating the connection to torrent.
One is a bad idea IMO.
Got it guys. I agree with all previous posts. I don't want to get capped either and I won't be a factor towards it.

LOL. Another reprobate weighs in.
"you pay for it you use it how you want"
So, exactly how much are you "paying" for tethering (not that which is currently offered as a freebie, but the theft of services your comment implies)? Your comment might be better phrased "you pay for it, I use it," since it's going to be paid for by someone, and if not by those who rationalize stealing it, then by the rest of us.
"they make hundreds of millions of dollars"
I'm guessing (assuming you're not still in Jr. High, as your attitude suggests), that you make thousands of dollars. So, I'd be justified in stealing from you, by your logic.
"I pay an already high phone bill"
If it's too high, it's very easy to cancel the service. Obviously, since you're posting in the TB forum, you have one, which means you've recently renewed your service. Which is it - you agreed that the value per dollar was acceptable, or you're just stupid?
You have to disable other connections after enabling internet sharing mode. Windows doesnt magically switch to a better connection on its own.
People should also remember that torrent does not mean illegal. He never mentioned what he was downloading. Apparently no one else in this thread has ever downloaded a linux distro, since bittorent is a primary way to do it. Certain games and game content are distributed legally through bittorent as well along with other software (generally opensource stuff).
The other day I didn't want to wait 30 minutes for aptitude to update my system on my 630KB/s average DSL, so I plugged in my phone to internet sharing on LTE and it was done in < 5minutes @ 2500KB/s average.
Verizon's network does not block ports as far as I know, but you are behind NAT, so you aren't going to be running any sort of server either on the public internet or easily connecting to your phone from a remote location.
Why do people take threads like this off the rails so quickly? The OP asked a simple question that didn't really warrant a philosophical decision. Imposing your will on the miniscule number of TB users who visit XDA won't make any appreciable impact on Verizon's attitude towards sanctioned network use.
OP, please report back if following "yareally"'s suggestion of disabling other connections works once ICS is enabled. Also, are you able to bridge your connection to the TB's in Windows? It'd be sweet to be able to merge WiFi (for speed) with LTE (for reliability).

Nope, cant bridge them in windows and use both (that is, it's not as simple as selecting both connections and clicking bridge). There's some ways to distribute their use over *nix and/or using a router and using them as separate connections, but it's not worth the time/effort. If you're really interested in doing it, there's some discussions about it on the xda forums already and elsewhere if you google around.

(Q) Anyone using wireless hotspot or tether?

Was curious to give it a shot. Wanted to know if anyone has been busted and charged or any that has zero problems with using these features

I've not had a problem using them and At&T has never questioned me either.
My kids watch so much YouTube on my phone that my data usage is pretty high each month...(I still have an unlimited plan)... so it's not unusual for me to go over 5 gigs or better.
But someone that jumps from not even a gig to over 5 all of a sudden might raise a few eyebrows.

If you don't have the unlimited data plan, I wouldn't recommend using it. I used it and SIGNIFICANTLY went over my data plan cap and was billed overage charges.
I got busted with AT&T using an iPhone... convinced them I had no idea what tethering was or jailbreaking, etc so they let me keep my unlimited plan. Even let me switch it when I got an Inspire after telling me I needed a "4G data plan", even though they don't have 4G... morons. Anyways, I think I'll try it on here. If you haven't gotten busted playing Live, I should be ok.

Don't count on 10 gigs as a soft limit. Companies are working towards eliminating unlimited plans, and eliminating the one in a <many many> stray customers who hog bandwidth hardly make any difference.
in my town AT&T sucks, coverage is completely spotty, we just got 3G about 2 weeks ago and the coverage is unbearable, in my house i get no service at all but when i go in the middle of town it will jump between 5 bars with 3G to 1-2 bars with edge constantly but when ever i go to a city with good 3G im tethering to my mac constantly and my data never goes over 1.5 GB even though i have the unlimited plan
I used WiFi Hotspot once when my home landline internet was on the fritz for a few hours. It was a nice backup.

what wifi tether to use

i just flashed the blackhole rom and all i can say is wow. it is incredible, so much cooler than some of the other ones ive found. but anyways im rooted and i was wondering what a good wifi tethering app to use is. obviously a free one that i wont have to pay ridiculous amounts of money for each month on my bill if i use it
Good luck with that. Most carriers are trying to crack down on this theft...check the market place they are there
Speaking of tether I have three questions.
1. If you start using a ridiculous amount of data you think vzw would catch on and try to charge you for it?
2. When vzw transitions to tiered data, they can't modify your plan if you currently have unlimited data can they?
3. Does vzw throttle data at a certain point?

1. probably if ur in the top 5% of users of data
2. no they cant. you are grandfathered in
3. not the 4g. i heard of people saying they used 40, 65 even 80 gb and they did not get throttled or cut off.

these phones can use quite a bit of data themselves. I think most of the apps use the "stealth" type of tether where verizon would have to guess that you were tethering based off of overall data usage.
verizon can throttle you. According to their policy, they will throttle the top 5% of data users, esp during peak times so as to not effect their network.

1. If you have unlimited data, then it wouldn't matter. If they can't prove you tether, then they can't charge you.
2. If you have unlimited data, you will be grandfathered into unlimited until you change your plan.
3. I've heard reports that they do and don't. I have never noticed being throttled, but I don't use a lot of data.
Verizon will soon be able to detect tether users. If you ever get an official update to your phone, say goodbye to tethering. Also google is starting to restrict downloads of tether apps to certain carriers, and you can bet verizon will be one of them.
Tethering days are numbered.

Those of you saying that VZW can't change your data plan/charge you extra and can't detect tethering are fools. The valid question is not whether they can do these things, it is a matter of whether they care or not. Right now I'm sure that they don't. The future is always an unknown.
I wonder if its downloaded through the phone if VZW would have record of it somewhere?

I've used that particular tethering app on various phones successfully in the past, and am in fact tethered with it over my Droid Charge (with version 3.1 beta). On most phones it's shown as an ad-hoc connection, not a real "access point" or "hotspot" like it does with the official tethering app. (The Charge right now is showing as an ad-hoc device, not a real wifi ap.)
Which version are you using on the Thunderbolt? What settings? I tried it this morning on the TB with 3.1 and while it appeared to work and connect as a real hotspot with the laptop, the laptop couldn't get any connections beyond the TB. I had everything on "auto".
Any hints/tips appreciated.
The connection right now for me on the Charge is more stable than with the official hotspot app...and it was the same with the official app on my Thunderbolt. I've posted youtube videos of both phones being used as a hotspot where the mobile data connection keeps flickering off, sometimes as rapidly as on for 5 seconds, no data for 5 seconds. It was maddening. Yesterday I had to pull out my TMobile Nexus S and use it's CM7 hotspot (which shows as a real access point, btw) to get a useable connection to the web.
Seems like the VZW official offerings aren't very stable.
I use the Wireless Tether 3.0 beta but you have to go to settings and click hTC routing fix for it to work.

Thanks! I missed that one in the settings. I also had to change the Device Profile from Auto to Generic, but now I'm tethered on my MacBook via the Thunderbolt, and it shows as a real access point.

Charge for hotspot feature?

Is this true, that theres a charge of 14.99 if i want to use it with the G2x?? I just got this phone Friday and since then im not able to use it and i called and thats what the rep told me. Weird though because i switched from the G2, and had no problems using hotspot on that phone.
Also, anyone have a problem with the browser always redirecting you to web2go.com telling you of a 1.99 charge if you continue even though you have a data plan?? My girl also got the G2x this monday and this would be her problem. Brand new activated sim card, restarted the network by the rep. Updated her line with the phones IMEI, it should be register and all ready to go right? But ive called 4 times because of that, and they seem to just restart the network, then it starts working fine but couple hours later, the web redirects me to web2go for that 1.99 charge. So then i call again and happens all over again. Im gonna call one more time at 3am pacific time, since im work right now 1am but would like your answers and suggestions please. Thank you.

If you are throttled ten you areon 2 g edge ****. I suspect that the reason it is not working is because it is just too slow. I could be wrong. I know that when I get throttled I cant even stream sirius xm or pandora unless I am onwifi. I think the g2x is optimized for 4 g network. I have the unlimited internet with the 10 gig high speed plan I think it is called ultra. I have never had a problem. I would wait till your cycle resets and see if it works.
All you have to do to get hotspot to work is to root your phone. And it counts against your data usage.
If your phone is on 2g, your tethered device will frequently get DNS timeouts.
I've never seen the web2go $1.99 msg - bummer.

[Q] Verizon: Mobile Hot Spot really slow

Now that I've switched to a plan that includes the Mobile Hot Spot feature I gave it a try today. I was shocked at the super slow download speeds (between 100k to 140k) but upload is what I would expect (around 2.5 Mb).
Is anyone else using this feature on a Verizon phone with better results?
When I've used FoxFi I have not had any issues. Haven't been compelled to do a speed test, but certainly can when I get home.
I have no experience with the sanctioned hotspot app, so can't speak to it.
Have you tried FoxFi? Doesn't require root, and works great for me.

I am rooted (route66 version) and I've tried Barnacle, Wireless Tether and FoxFi. The first two didn't work at all. FoxFi said it was running but I couldn't get my iPad to connect to it. VZW's Mobile Hotspot App is trash. I always experienced it disconnecting on my X2. I now use FoxFi for the S3 and it works great. I did have to download and install the FoxFi add-on from the Play store and cycle the proxy off and on to get it to work, but if you do this, it does work.
I assume the app will be fixed at some point. Until then, cycling works.
Good luck.

I am rooted (route66 version) and I've tried Barnacle, Wireless Tether and FoxFi. The first two didn't work at all. FoxFi said it was running but I couldn't get my iPad to connect to it. In any case since my plan supports this "sanctioned" app I thought I'd see if anyone had any better luck with it before I call up Verizon to complain.

Yeah, I'm rooted on route66 and have been having problems with all tethering apps, too.

It's weird but the Verizon Mobile Hot Spot which I complained about a couple days ago being SUPER SLOW has all of a sudden began to work great. Now I can connect my iPad to my phone and get a consistent 10 to 15 Mbps download speeds.
I won't bother with the other tethering apps since my plan now includes tethering.
