[Q] Verizon: Mobile Hot Spot really slow - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Now that I've switched to a plan that includes the Mobile Hot Spot feature I gave it a try today. I was shocked at the super slow download speeds (between 100k to 140k) but upload is what I would expect (around 2.5 Mb).
Is anyone else using this feature on a Verizon phone with better results?

When I've used FoxFi I have not had any issues. Haven't been compelled to do a speed test, but certainly can when I get home.
I have no experience with the sanctioned hotspot app, so can't speak to it.
Have you tried FoxFi? Doesn't require root, and works great for me.

I am rooted (route66 version) and I've tried Barnacle, Wireless Tether and FoxFi. The first two didn't work at all. FoxFi said it was running but I couldn't get my iPad to connect to it. In any case since my plan supports this "sanctioned" app I thought I'd see if anyone had any better luck with it before I call up Verizon to complain.

I have the hot spot, it works OK,I use it with my ps3, watching netflix works smooth.

you have those numbers backwards....
2.5MB down and 140k up are typical of CDMA EVDO rev A

I know it was past noon but I promise I wasn't drinking... honest...
Seriously, check out the attached pic of the results on the iPad connected to my Verizon SG3 via the Mobile Hot Spot app. The first two were from this afternoon. Disregard the other three results; they were the result of connecting to my in-laws' ISDN hotspot and a hotel hot spot.

perhaps some artifact of it being a hotspot?..or iPad
..who knows.. but the numbers you see are typical...just in the other direction... umm you in australia?..lol

VZW's Mobile Hotspot App is trash. I always experienced it disconnecting on my X2. I now use FoxFi for the S3 and it works great. I did have to download and install the FoxFi add-on from the Play store and cycle the proxy off and on to get it to work, but if you do this, it does work.
I assume the app will be fixed at some point. Until then, cycling works.
Good luck.

It's weird but the Verizon Mobile Hot Spot which I complained about a couple days ago being SUPER SLOW has all of a sudden began to work great. Now I can connect my iPad to my phone and get a consistent 10 to 15 Mbps download speeds.
I won't bother with the other tethering apps since my plan now includes tethering.

[Q] Wireless Tethering Issue

I rooted my phone Saturday mainly for tethering. I use my phone as my internet connection while I'm storm chasing. Well today was a chase day and everything was working great until I hit edge network and then i couldn't get any data on my laptop. It showed a local connection, but no internet. Now I haven't tested this since and I have 3g at home so I can't test it there. Does anyone know if this is how it is supposed to work and if so is there a work around? I'm hoping it was just a fluke and will work fine chasing the next couple days. We have my wife's iPhone 4 using mywi as a backup just in case though. Should I be able to use edge using the wireless ap in Android?
Thanks
Are you using the stock tethering?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Yes I am using the stock tethering program and have the tethering manager froze.
you should be able to tether on edge but it will be slow, maybe slow enough to get an error. also i have had issues where i need to reset the radio on the phone by turning off wireless networks and turning it back on.
Ok thanks for the info. I just wanted to make sure it was possible and I didn't have to adjust a setting somewhere that I was overlooking. I will be using again today and tomorrow so I will get a chance to test it out some more. I'm very aware of the very slow speeds on edge but it usually works for updating radar information ok. And Opera web browser also works very well over edge with the turbo mode on. Thanks!
Tested out the tethering a lot the last two days and have came to the conclusion it will drop your tethering connection with two or less bars of edge. It will auto reconnect as soon as my signal improves above that level. Still a little frustrating.

what wifi tether to use

i just flashed the blackhole rom and all i can say is wow. it is incredible, so much cooler than some of the other ones ive found. but anyways im rooted and i was wondering what a good wifi tethering app to use is. obviously a free one that i wont have to pay ridiculous amounts of money for each month on my bill if i use it
Good luck with that. Most carriers are trying to crack down on this theft...check the market place they are there
Speaking of tether I have three questions.
1. If you start using a ridiculous amount of data you think vzw would catch on and try to charge you for it?
2. When vzw transitions to tiered data, they can't modify your plan if you currently have unlimited data can they?
3. Does vzw throttle data at a certain point?

I use android-wifi-tether
code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
yep use wife tether

answers
1. probably if ur in the top 5% of users of data
2. no they cant. you are grandfathered in
3. not the 4g. i heard of people saying they used 40, 65 even 80 gb and they did not get throttled or cut off.

these phones can use quite a bit of data themselves. I think most of the apps use the "stealth" type of tether where verizon would have to guess that you were tethering based off of overall data usage.
verizon can throttle you. According to their policy, they will throttle the top 5% of data users, esp during peak times so as to not effect their network.

1. If you have unlimited data, then it wouldn't matter. If they can't prove you tether, then they can't charge you.
2. If you have unlimited data, you will be grandfathered into unlimited until you change your plan.
3. I've heard reports that they do and don't. I have never noticed being throttled, but I don't use a lot of data.
Verizon will soon be able to detect tether users. If you ever get an official update to your phone, say goodbye to tethering. Also google is starting to restrict downloads of tether apps to certain carriers, and you can bet verizon will be one of them.
Tethering days are numbered.

im running open garden wifi...same thing as wifi tether. i can't find wifi tether on the market
To find Wireless Tether on the market, you have to go into Airplane mode, enable WiFi and then search for it there.
or simply go to this website
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Those of you saying that VZW can't change your data plan/charge you extra and can't detect tethering are fools. The valid question is not whether they can do these things, it is a matter of whether they care or not. Right now I'm sure that they don't. The future is always an unknown.
I wonder if its downloaded through the phone if VZW would have record of it somewhere?

I've used that particular tethering app on various phones successfully in the past, and am in fact tethered with it over my Droid Charge (with version 3.1 beta). On most phones it's shown as an ad-hoc connection, not a real "access point" or "hotspot" like it does with the official tethering app. (The Charge right now is showing as an ad-hoc device, not a real wifi ap.)
Which version are you using on the Thunderbolt? What settings? I tried it this morning on the TB with 3.1 and while it appeared to work and connect as a real hotspot with the laptop, the laptop couldn't get any connections beyond the TB. I had everything on "auto".
Any hints/tips appreciated.
The connection right now for me on the Charge is more stable than with the official hotspot app...and it was the same with the official app on my Thunderbolt. I've posted youtube videos of both phones being used as a hotspot where the mobile data connection keeps flickering off, sometimes as rapidly as on for 5 seconds, no data for 5 seconds. It was maddening. Yesterday I had to pull out my TMobile Nexus S and use it's CM7 hotspot (which shows as a real access point, btw) to get a useable connection to the web.
Seems like the VZW official offerings aren't very stable.
I use the Wireless Tether 3.0 beta but you have to go to settings and click hTC routing fix for it to work.

Thanks! I missed that one in the settings. I also had to change the Device Profile from Auto to Generic, but now I'm tethered on my MacBook via the Thunderbolt, and it shows as a real access point.
I have been using wireless tether for root users on Das Bamf 3.0 RC4 with MR2 radio and have not had any drop issues thus far.
Just downloaded this as well. Works great! Thanks for the tip
I believe the 2.0.7 one from the Google site is the only one that works on the thunderbolt.

Charge for hotspot feature?

Is this true, that theres a charge of 14.99 if i want to use it with the G2x?? I just got this phone Friday and since then im not able to use it and i called and thats what the rep told me. Weird though because i switched from the G2, and had no problems using hotspot on that phone.
Also, anyone have a problem with the browser always redirecting you to web2go.com telling you of a 1.99 charge if you continue even though you have a data plan?? My girl also got the G2x this monday and this would be her problem. Brand new activated sim card, restarted the network by the rep. Updated her line with the phones IMEI, it should be register and all ready to go right? But ive called 4 times because of that, and they seem to just restart the network, then it starts working fine but couple hours later, the web redirects me to web2go for that 1.99 charge. So then i call again and happens all over again. Im gonna call one more time at 3am pacific time, since im work right now 1am but would like your answers and suggestions please. Thank you.

I know about the cap, im throttled right now.. But it just won't connect right anymore. It shows connected but if i highlight the signal bars by the clock with the mouse it shows no internet access

If you are throttled ten you areon 2 g edge ****. I suspect that the reason it is not working is because it is just too slow. I could be wrong. I know that when I get throttled I cant even stream sirius xm or pandora unless I am onwifi. I think the g2x is optimized for 4 g network. I have the unlimited internet with the 10 gig high speed plan I think it is called ultra. I have never had a problem. I would wait till your cycle resets and see if it works.
All you have to do to get hotspot to work is to root your phone. And it counts against your data usage.
If your phone is on 2g, your tethered device will frequently get DNS timeouts.
I've never seen the web2go $1.99 msg - bummer.

Working app for Wifi tethering?

I heard the wifi hotspot that is built in the phone has like a trial period or something (you'll suddenly get a tmobile page on your browser when you hit the limit) and I tried the wireless tether for root 2.0.7 & 3 beta... but doesn't work.
Any other options to wifi tether for my laptop & Iconia A500 with MT4GS?

I used the old one and it seem like it was getting a fail on accessing the wifi (when looking at the log).
When I use 3.0beta, everything loaded fine in the log... but when my laptop connected I get the yellow yield sign and no internet signal supposedly. let me download the latest one from your link and see what happens
what settings are you using? I just tried again and same problem. I tried connecting with my Iconia tab and it just kept saying "Obtaining IP address" and didn't do anything.

nevermind, got it to work. keep playing with the settings.

No it doesnt. WI FI app is 100% free. When you reach your limit you get a text saying you reached your limit and you connection has slowed down.
I've maxed it several times. No need for an outside app.

Free ... assuming you've paid the monthly fee for tethering, right? The TMobile hotspot app pre-installed is only for those paying customers. Right? Or am I missing something here?

No monthy fee for the app itself. You can have it but without a data plan or a wifi it won't connect. I'm not sure if it would run on another phone as a droid x etc.

ok our native Tethering app works for FREE, as long as you dont abuse it, that tethering option fee only if you abuse it constantly and are constantly going over your set amount of data, so 1 you are hitting your data cap, so now your web is slower than a snail, two if you are constantly tethering T-mo is going to make you pay for tethering, and three, STOP ABUSING! i only use tethering for checking email every once in a while on my Laptop, and have never payed for the tethering option, i even spoke with a t-mo rep, and he said its basically only for abusers that tmo makes pay the $15 for tethering. hope this clears things up a bit.

Not calling your integrity into question, but I wouldn't believe this for a second. T-Mobile is a business and it doesn't seem likely that they would give their services away for free when they have an explicit add-on service they charge for.
Why run the risk when you can *easily* just install the Android Wifi Tether app and use that service a bit further off of T-Mobile's radar? It just seems far, far safer.
Just use Barnacle to wifi tether.

This has been happening to me for a while, I even started a thread about it, but no one responded....if you change your user agent to the same one your phone uses, then you will be fine, but it will take you to the mobile version of some sites.
Have you tried one of these 3rd party apps? Does it still happen?

Yes I have tried Barnacle several times, and it will still direct me to the the Tmobile warning screen....but if you just change your user agent on what ever you are trying to tether to (computer, tablet, ect..) change it to the same one on your phone, and the stock app and 3rd party apps work fine, but occasionally it will take you to a mobile version of the site you are trying to view.

Inconsistent Wifi Tether Issues!

I have been having intermittent wifi tether issues with 2 different wifi tether/hot spot apps. 1 being "Wireless Tether", the other the official verizon hotspot app. It is also worth noting I have had the same issues with each individual tether app across many different roms, with/without kexec, and tested with more than one wifi connecting device.
The first is the Wireless tether app. I have it configured with wpa2 security, I've tried both generic ics profile and galaxy nexus cdma/lte. When I launch it and turn tether on it appears to work normally but most of the time it does not broadcast the SSID, preventing devices from seeing the neteork and connecting. Sometimes restarting tethering will solve it but usually I have to reboot the entire phone to get it to work and broadcast SSID.
With the verizon hotspot app the issue is completely different. It always starts and broadcasts SSID, but after some time the internet will start running very slow on the receiving device. If I look on the phone the 4g lte icon will then be off. If I run a speed test locally on the phone it performs great with 25mbps dl speed and then wifi data will start working again on the receiving device.
Am I doing something wrong or just the first to complain?

I'm considering changing my plan on Verizon from a data only to the Everything and getting the SIII. I never use the data plan for laptop anymore but just haven't close the account.
You might be able to answer my question... Does Verizon still charge wifi tether (hotspoting) fees on their new plans? Before, avoiding this fee was one of my main reasons for rooting my phone (different carrier).
I realize you're having trouble with this feature anyway.

On the new plans, it's free to tether. On the old unlimited plans, its a fee service.
Not that many of us pay it.
Data only plan? Can you elaborate at all please? I want aware of such thing...
