I just got my thunderbolt and my 4g keeps dropping.... Is there a problem?

Ever since the nationwide outtage a week ago my 4g has been spotty at best.
I have noticed slower 4g speeds on average and it drops alot more as well.

yeah, stop dropping it
I had the same problem after spending a weekend in Mexico - they replaced my SIM card at the store and it has worked fine ever sense.
I keep cycling through 3g/1X and the network is constantly unavailable, wtf is going on? Im so disappointed with this phone so far.
I dont know if I need to install a new radio? I installed bamfs remix 1.6 and some lean kernel, did I do something wrong? My Incredible never had these issues
Where do you live? That obviously matters, 4g coverage keeps expanding in Chicagoland area, I get 4g almost everywhere I go.
I live in Akron, I get full 4g bars then it drops to nothing, then 1x, then 3G. its unreal
Did you enter your address in the coverage map? Don't know how big Akron 4g coverage is, but again, I rarely ever lose 4g around Chicago and the burbs.
Unrooted BOLT, same issue with connection
I have been seeing the same about the connectivity being bad. I live in burbs of Philadelphia, only about 20 mins from city so i'm not going to pin it on my location..
So you are rooted? I however am not. Just got the thing and wanted to see how it was for a bit before rooting, but now i'm thinking before i root i better make sure the phone isn't crap or i'm not gonna be able to return it.
Ugh. Let me know if you're going to try and call VZ, HTC, or whatever. PM me if you find anything.

I'm in Wilmington, DE.
Mine is going up and down, as well as getting 3G or just bars in areas that should be 4G.
Another person in the office here, which should be good 4G, also having his phone do the same.
I'm rooted, he is stock.
It happens to me just about anywhere I go lately.

I don't know where you got that information from but thats false. You can easily return to a complete stock state after rooting if need be.

Pretty much from Mid-County to the Lehigh Valley exit is still 3G in most areas but south towards the city and in the Lehigh Valley itself is all LTE. I travel down from Allentown to Philly regularly and I can tell you this from personal experience.
FYI Lehigh Valley LTE is down right now but I just got out of a meeting with Verizon (less than an hour ago) and they supposedly knew there was some maintenance being done in our area (so that may be the reason for the current outage.) If you switch out of LTE Mode to CDMA LTE auto you should pick up 3G (I'd also enable airplane mode and then disable it to pick up a strong 3G for right now.)
Oh and +1 on the rooted/non-rooted thing. You can flash back to non-rooted stock from a rooted state to send it back. Instructions are in the development forum.

Hi there, thanks for that info i appreciate it. I seem to be missing where htc allows us to switch btwn the 4g and 3g, i searched for the question but didn't get much results. So i'll my noob question right here. Where is that done?
I see under Settings > Wire & networks > Mobile network settings there is a System select option, for "Change the cdma roaming mode", is this where i'm supposed to be? Roaming doesn't seem to be the area i'd think to have to change this particular thing, but i don't see much else in these menus. Please advise or link a thread that i didn't see in my results.
Verizon has a problem with their new eHRPD network.. which is what the Thunderbolt is on by default.. (this allows for 4G + simultaneous talk and browse on 3G).. However, though 4G works OK, 3G doesn't seem to.
In order to tap into Verizon's original 3G network.. dial ##778# on your phone.. go to edit mode (you'll see pop up after you dial that number)..password is 000000 (6 zeros).. go to modem settings.. Rev.A and eHRPD is probably selected there by default.. choose "Enable" option... which will kick it out of eHRPD and then hit menu.. commit changes.. and the phone will reboot. You'll be on Verizon's original 3G network which will work fine.. but you won't have 4G.
I don't know about you but I still have 4g...

Hey guys. Just wondering if there is anyway to force LTE on ICS-SuperLite 4.2? I know there is LTE where I am because I used to get it with the SuperLite for GB. I used to be able to pick from GSM/HSPA(Auto) or from GSM/HSPA/LTE(Auto). Something along those lines. Thanks.

UCLCA4 radio in ics isn't as good as switching to LTE as UCLA3. In fact, unless you have a good lte signal, it will stay on 4g. I know this because in my room i was only getting 2 bars lte with ucla3. But with UCLCA4, as soon as I go to work, where I have great reception, my phone switches to LTE. The scaling on the new radio kinda sux actually.
i have the same problem, i keep staying on 4G and even in places i used to have full lte i dont get any lte...any idea why? I did manually input apn
I am running PA JB latest build on my infuse, and i have data plan from AT&T, wife has SkyRocket (S2) without data plan.
To compare the data speeds, I powered off both phones, pulled out my sim and put in SkyRocket, powered up, then enabled data in settings,
Still, it doesnt get data enabled, tried rebooting still no use.
Why isnt my Sim in Skyrocket getting data enabled?

Why are you asking in the infuse section? I understand you have an infuse but the problem is related to the skyrocket... so you should ask in he skyrocket thread as they would know....
But since I do have an lte phone k can tell you the problem...
Lte phones use different apns then the rest of atg smart phones...they use pta APN, in order to use pta apns you have to call Att and enable lte for your account (which is free and doesn't cost anything extra...you just gotta say you got a skyrocket and need to activate the lte, they will ask for the imei...give it to the
If it still doesn't work then go to your nearest Att store and get an lte compatible sim...also free, but the one that comes with the infuse works for lte...if it says 3g on the sim it won't work

Thank you for ur explanation. My remaining question, now that I know infuse doesnt support lte and skyrocket does, even with any custom ROM on infuse, I wont be able to get the high speeds which skyrocket can give.. rt ? OR if i get lte compatible sim and still use in infuse, (and flash latest JB/ICS ROMS) will infuse also can give lte speeds ?
thanx again

Nope. The ability for a phone to use the lte network is in the phone's hardware. No amount of hacking and reprogramming will make the infuse use lte.

So, if I use skyrocket, i get much faster speeds than any ROM on infuse ?? What's the speed difference like in Mbps
I don't know. I don't have lte. I know speed is determined not just by the phone but the signal, the quality of the signal, the amount of traffic using the signal.
Of course this is a question you can answer yourself....
Do a few speed tests with the infuse and then put your sim in the skyrocket and enable the lte with at&t and do a couple speed tests on it.
Just remember each speed test uses about 20mb of data.
Then report your findings. I am kind of curious.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda app-developers app
On average with an infuse you'll get about 8mbs down top...I usually average 6mbs down on an infuse and 1-2mbs up...most I've gotten is 3mbs up
With lte...I've gotten 23mbs download speed and 11mbs upload speed...and never lower than 20mbs down and 9mbs up... (only ran speed test six times) but I've seen people report and show proof of 80mbs down...
but that's only if you are in an area that has lte coverage...not everywhere has lte...if lte isn't in your area you'll end up using hspa+ or whatever is the highest speed in your area

I ran with Infuse as it is, At home getting 1-3 Mbps range with several tests
Called ATT to provision the sim for LTE speeds, and ran with Skyrocket. And getting 4-7 Mbps range. Probably my home area isnt that covered with lte (even though ATT claims). So, looks easily 2-3 times speeds with LTE. I will probably use Skyrocket as long as wife allows
Hello dudes and dudettes.
So, here's the deal - I was able to get my Verizon S3 working on T-mobile network (using cm or aokp) thanks to paravex, as shown on my first post - However, I only used it to make phone calls and text as I did not have a data plan until a few days ago when I decided to join the 21st century and went for T-mobile's truly unlimited 4g (lte and no throttling).
Thing is... No LTE... No 4g... No 3g... just "g" (gprs / 2g or whatever??) so the thing works but is slower than a herd of turtles stampeding through peanut butter. No, it's not where I am - I travel a lot, especially from Baltimore to New York, and the thing is always on "G". And it's not set to use 2g only for battery saving.
I tried speedtest.net and others, but results were pretty redonkulous and only served to confirm my fears... I tried both LTE and 4g APNs for T-mobile ("fast." something and "epc." something), but both only work on GPRS (I can see the G or check by dialing *#*#4636#*#*)
I'm running the latest nighty (jb) for aokp d2vzw, and will try CM and my nandroid backup of stock touchwiz. I have a feeling stock might work, but I really don't want to get back to ICS, much less with touchwiz. I also can't sell or trade my phone 'cause it's dinged in a couple of spots, so please refrain from that suggestion.
Once again for my fellow ADHD peeps - Verizon S3; Tmobile network; unltd 4g plan; stuck on GPRS.
So... how do I get t-mobile 4G (and LTE) to work on my Verizon S3, preferably using jelly bean if possible?
I'm attaching screenshots with some stats.
Thanks in advance!!
You can't. Tmo bands aren't supported on Verizon variant.

Tyler's correct, the bands aren't supported, same reason ATT only gets edge on our phone as well. Pretty sure even T mobiles SGH-T999 doesn't even get LTE.

So I've noticed that since I've flashed the PAC rom that this is the first time that I've actually seen LTE mode work on my phone. Is there something that the other roms are not utilizing that is making this function possible?
So... on CM10.2 you are saying LTE does not function?
I'm not aware of "anything special" on PAC, which ROM's have you tried where it does not work?

Well let me ask you this....is 4G and LTE the same thing or is LTE strictly for data? With CM10.2 I get the 4G but with PAC this is the first time that I've seen LTE show in my status bar and this is with any ROM that I've tried weather it be SlimBean or CM10.2 or Carbon.

4g == LTE on your device.
4g can be many different things, but in the realm of the Photon Q, on Sprint - it's LTE.

Ok cool.....that was one thing I had been confused about which was what LTE actually was. About 6 months ago there was about a week long span that I was without phone service in my area because Sprint was upgrading their towers to LTE but when everything was back to normal I didn't notice anything different about the performance of my service with Sprint. And LTE was supposed to be the next "BIG" thing. Still not so sure whats special about it since the 4G has always been there.

LTE is quite a big faster then EVDO, which is all I have in my area. Well, there's WiMax, but I don't want to confuse you lol.
Basically there are many different flavors of 4 geeee. The best part? The official board that determines what is and what isn't 3g/4g say that none of what the carrier's advertise is technically 4g.
So, hizzah. Welcome to the marketing party. I can tell you that LTE is faster than EVDO. Do a speed test (there's a few apps on the Play Store) on 4g, and then force your phone to 3g or next time you go somewhere there is no 4g, try another speed test... there's a pretty big difference .

Ok......I did the speed test and now I do see the considerable difference between LTE and EVDO. Heck in a lot of cases it seems that LTE is faster than wifi which makes me wonder how much longer wifi is gonna be around if that continues to be the case.

Exactly.
Wifi will still have its place - I don't see LTE being a solution for stadiums. In the home, I don't see people running out and replacing their home internet connections with LTE access points.
But LTE is starting to become a viable option as a backup internet circuit for businesses. Cisco is starting to put LTE-ready modules in their business-class gateways.
Here we are, and look at South Korea, already launched LTE-A or LTE Advanced...

I worked for a telecom contractor doing the broadband backhaul for Sprint around the Philadelphia area..... and depending on the individual site, you was looking at hooking up Comcast, Verizon, Zayo, and several others fiber optics to the Sprint towers..... and this was Business Class Data, so it was in the 50GB ranges for speed
