[Q] TF700 Smart Cover Function - Asus Transformer TF700

when I was in unofficial CM ROM build 9/25, I found this amazing function : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BUQ8xFcoGI .
But when I updated to JB, I lost it. I believe it has something to do with kernel.
Is there any one interested in porting this function to JB rom ?

Pretty cool. I knew Nexus 7 supported it, but did not know infinity had magnetic sensor... Wonder why won't ASUS add the function unless the patent is owned by Apple.

Yeah , I found this function by accident. I think it is an important function. At least important to me.

First things first:
Lets get some working TW roms and kernels first.
And after that I am sure CM10 will come considering we have 2 or more maintainers with notes. So it will come, just patience is key

TouchWiz Roms.
I'd rather keep touchwiz as it will most likely get rid of the pen capabilities if we move to CM10.

This is not true at all, ICS introduced stylus APIs and I'm pretty sure that most stylus apps use those APIs instead of using device specific SDKs like the S Pen SDK. Obviously you'll lose S Note but I think third party apps are probably better for power users.

I 'm more talking about the multiscreen feature and stuff like taking snapshots with it. Im not doubting it will work but we will lose features.
I'm less interested in a rom than I am in a kernel which will allow overclocking.

At least two Samsung device maintainers with Notes (well, one with an N8013 in possession, one with an N8000 on order), and I think a few other CM team people have devices too.
However, the Samsung kernel source is slightly jacked up - any kernel built with it seems to have derped wifi that is unreliable as hell. (Either that, or it's a problem with MY setup - no one else has tried to build from source yet it seems.) I really want to try and fix this before I start CM bringup. If I don't succeed by this weekend I'm going to give up on the N8013 source release and hope that the I9300 kernel results in a saner system...

Awesome cannot wait for CM. I'm missing cm10 a ton having gotten used to it on my prime. Cm10 on the note should absolutely fly because I still think cm10 on the prime is faster than stock on the note

Quick question: where can I read more about the bringup process/porting CM to a new device? Also, is there any place where you dump your thoughts as you work on things like this (IRC channel, etc). I want to learn because I think I can help. I have pretty good programming and electronics experience. I've built CyanogenMod for several of my devices but of course this was after the port was already completed.
Is this first post more or less accurate? http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/15492-general-cyanogenmod-porting-discussion/
Also, what distinguishes AOSP kernels from stock kernels? On my other Samsung devices I notice there's always a distinction between kernels that work on stock based ROMs vs kernels that work on AOSP ROMs. Which is kind of counter to what that post says, because how would you then boot a generic build with a stock kernel?
Sorry for the random questions, I've just wondered about this for a long time and never really owned a device immediately after it came out so I never got to properly see the bringup process. Thanks for all your work!
I personally really hate the TW roms... i just really like the cleanness of the CM10 roms.

Was android 4.0 (ICS) a big mistake?

Just wondering why android 4.0 (ICS) had these notable bugs as a major release? like VPN connection issues, text corruption (jumbles up and looks like hieroglyphics) and maybe more (add any you know and I'll update this post)
I mean what did they do on Google before releasing a milestone android version?
P.s: I remember one of the most significant features announced at the press event on October 2011 in Hong Kong was 'unlock by face recognition'. But where is it now? I couldn't find it on any ICS AOSP ROM or Jelly Bean ROM installed on my phone. Was it only for galaxy nexus was shown at the Honh Kong event?
I have that feature on my EVO 3d

It could be faked by a photo and also it didn't work well for older devices where the front camera had a low resolution, hence most rom's removed it.

Does Google keep it on Jelly Bean yet? Or Google removed it on later ICS updates too itself?
All my devices which have been 5 have all been on Ice Cream Sandwich and I had no problems whatsoever by far the best version of Android before jelly bean I have facial recognition on all of them if it was removed it was because the custom ROM that you were on remove it it's a standard feature and Ice Cream Sandwich.

Jelly bean actually enhanced the face recognition feature. You have to blink to unlock the phone. Obviously you can't do that with a picture of your face.

I suppose Face unlock has still to evolve a lot, i mean there could be numerous scenarios / lightning conditions etc. But like NIMBAH mentioned blink to unlock is a good addition
Never had problems in lighting

Depends on what your phone is. Face recognition requries front camera mate.
Anyway, I believe the 4.x series is a massive success. It solves the defragmental issue, improves UI in terms of look and feels and smoothness significantly, while maintains Android's strength of openess and growth.
The VPN thing is minor, and it is ignorant to consider this as a Android's fiasco. Meanwhile, text corruption is caused by your phone's kernel, hence you can't blame it on Google. I sense that you use some legacy phone like Galaxy Y and have bad impression on ICS.
In my opinion Android 4.0 was the best move Google has made yet. Jellybean is nice and all, but ICS made the big changes. Fully HWA ui, deeper account integration with most services and just beautiful to work with. Android has never been this tweakable before. As far as bugs are concerned, I've never encountered any of the problems the OP names.
ICS is beautiful for me.
I'd compare it to Windows 7 whereas Gingerbread was like Vista to me.
Anyways, the launch of ICS really shows the true versatility and strength of Android. It's smoother, easier to use, and more minimalistic than any other version of Android out there. As for the facial recognition feature, it works perfectly fine on CM10 for me. I've used it on CM9 as well.
VPN is definitely an issue, but seeing as I don't use it, it didn't matter to me.
ICS isn't always perfectly functioning on older devices though. So i'd assume that you're running an older device with legacy hardware that just doesn't function properly with ICS (probably an issue porting code and software to the device). I remember trying ICS on my Dad's G2x and it was a nightmare! So I can understand where you're coming from.

Dammit why can't I just remember those days I was on gingerbread (2.3) and its functionality to compare with ICS as a big Change? Should I flash a 2.3 version again and stay 1week or more on it? Is it the only remained way to realize smoothness improvements?

Your main issue was that fact you were using a ported version of the OS with hacked up drivers and files. There will always be issues when you use these types of OS distros. I also used the same device as you but recently switched and let me tell you the desire HD doesn't do it justice. The devs do great work but there is only so much they can do without the proper files.

That's true zelendel, but as far as I know text corruption was as AOSP issue that was present in stock ICS on the Galaxy Nexus too. Haven't seen it since JellyBean so I think it has been fixed in AOSP. Also, development for the DHD has come a long way since you left especially since the release of 3.0.xx kernel by Virtuous Team. The forum has really come back to life. The codefireX 4.2.1 ROM and its 3.0.xx KangBang kernel are pretty awesome, and the phone has never performed better.

Slider SL101 and JB roms

Has anyone developed a JB rom yet that works correctly with the Slider keyboard? The ones I tried a couple of months ago all turned off the screen when you opened the keyboard.
Thanks

I don't have a slider, but try the EOS4 and/or Noname cm10.1 builds, they might have implemented this functionality.
EOS 4 hasn't, I'll try No Name
You should report back here if you find out. I'm looking to breathe new life into my Slider.
None of them are compatible due to the rom reading the opening of the keyboard as a docked transformer being closed. The Megatron rom had a switch to disable this feature for the Slider. I'm afraid no one cares to take the time for us since there weren't that many Sliders sold.

from what i understand the problem has to do with the lidpatch in the TF101 ROM's
Agreed. The CM 10 Unofficial rom in the dev section mostly works and there is no lidpatch with it. The only major issue is no screen rotation when keyboard is closed. I can live with that.

Keyboard works on both. Only things that don't work are 1) doesn't wake up from the keyboard 2) the rear camera is inverted.
Which 4.2.2 build did you try? I tried the latest and opening the keyboard shuts off the tablet.
We need a list of ROMs that don't use the lid patch, or a way to remove the lid patch from existing jb ROMs.

I wonder if tim's katkernel without the lidpatch would work as a fix, try heading over there. SInce I remember him releasing like kernel 95 and kernel 95 lidpatch. So maybe there?
No luck there. I'm back on stock.

Tried the 4.1.2 CM ROM, found a few things that don't work:
1) Auto rotation doesn't work when keyboard is closed, but it does work when the keyboard is open .
2) As you've already said- the rear camera is inverted and confusing ><
3) Again, as you've already said, it doesn't wake up from the keyboard.
Can't think about another one right now, I flashed my slider back to ICS a month ago so I don't remember much...
I'll try the No-name CM ROM and will report...

Is there really a great difference between ICS and JB? Is it worth the trouble?

If you're new to everything, you're better off keeping it as it is for now and doing a lot of reading and talking on the forums, easiest way to turning it into a brick is reading one thread and crossing your fingers
I don't own the slider so not sure which ROMs are available or even the method to flash it, although I can't imagine it being much different to the TF101
I hated ICS but that was mainly down to ASUS and their amazing updates that turned a perfectly good tablet into a useless rebooting crashing POS
Jumping on the JB Custom ROM wagon was the best thing I even did, the TF runs 100x better than the day I got it
The later JB ROMs have a new UI too
Best thing to do, just find a long custom ROM thread and just start reading from the start, you'll be surprised how much you pick up thanks to other peoples issues and questions and replies

[Q] Google Play Edition HTC One Mini

Has anyone tried to use the Google Play Edition RUU for the HTC One (posted here) on their HTC One Mini? The hardware looks similar enough that I'd think it would work. I'm not sure if the lack of NFC is an issue.
Context:
I am a noob to both this forum and Android. I am ready to make the switch, but I want a vanilla Android experience; I'm just not a fan of the Sense UI from what I've been able to play with. I also value smaller, lighter devices, and the HTC One Mini feels perfect to me. I'm an experienced technologist, I've jailbroken iPhones (admittedly less complicated), and I've been a tester for prototype devices at a mobile company I'd prefer not to name (more complicated), so I feel absolutely comfortable with the process of rooting a phone like this. I also value OTA updates, so a Google Play Edition is exactly what I'm looking for.
Any thoughts or suggestions on the subject would be appreciated. I've already gotten several ideas from other posts here. I do apologize if this has already been answered, but I did search and am pretty confident it hasn't been directly addressed.
No, don't do that. Especially not the RUU since that does more than just installing a stock rom.

Google Play Edition RUU is recompiled from source nothing to do with Sense 5 and that's mean different kernel that won't boot the HTC One Mini.
You have to wait for an CyanogenMOD available and after that if you don't like it we can build/port AOSP (pure google android).

That's incorrect, the GE rom is actually just visually desensed Sense and can be booted with a Sense 5 kernel. It's nowhere close to being AOSP.

That makes good sense to me and, in theory, means the Google Play Edition ROM could boot on the mini since the hardware of the same architecture. I think the question is whether the same drivers can be used for the other internals. In other words, we could be able to boot the OS but be unable to use any of the components.
GSM Arena has the full tech specs of the HTC One and the Mini. When I compare these, I see a GPU that, according to Adreno wikipedia article, supports the same OpenGL, OpenVX, and DirectX versions, so I think this would be fine. The chipsets are slightly different and that worries me a bit since that could imply different radios, etc. I'd feel better if I could see a teardown of the mini, but with how miserable the teardown of the full sized version was I doubt they're clamoring to start that.

Correct. And....ohai!
The partition layout is completely different as are the kernel base and ramdisk offsets. If you flash that RUU...you may be heading back to the AT&T store immediately afterwards.
I have most of the prep work completed for cm-10.2....so sit tight while I work out some kinks. I will make a thread in the original android dev forums once its ready for alpha testing.

Really?? So the One users can switch from GE to Sense without flashing kernel? No atleast ramdisk changes nothing?
So if we port a m7 sense 5 we can also port GE in the same way?
That doesn't mean we can also base a CM on sense 5 kernel?

Yes. And this is how I was able to port sense to the First so easily. HTC's "AOSP" roms are purely Sense roms with specific apks replaced with AOSP apks. In 4.2+ a lot of changes need to be made to kernel to boot AOSP. Those changes won't necessarily be compatible with sense

Sorry guys to bump this up but I could not find any further info on this...
Is there any development or is it a deserted project?
Cheers,
ym
ps. BTW is there AOSP rom available for the Mini? Cyanogenmod seems to have heat issues and the wifey is already hot enough so I don't want to give her anything problematic

Yeah buddy... Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-mini/orig-development/rom-t2825888
Cheers
I would not install any CM-based ROM (CM/Candy*/PacMan/whatever) on M4 until the overheat issue is dealt with. They all have reports of bricked devices, and it looks like any device can (or will, eventually) get cooked any moment sooner or later (some people got theirs bricked after half a year, mine was lost within half an hour).
In the meantime, bilal_liberty has created a LibertyROM GPE for M4!
GPE is Sense-based and thus safe to install.
* EDIT: According to tr1gg3r84, CandyROM is not CM-based.
excellent, thanks

Excellent suggestion as I was looking for the GPE originally :good:

EH? There has NEVER been any reports of overheating or bricked devices on CandyRom! So I suggest for you to get your facts right before posting.!

I'm very sorry if that is the case, then I must be mistaken for another ROM; there were a bunch involved in this issue.
But no reports does not mean it has not happened. As far as I know CandyRom is CM-based *, and overheating issue affects all CM-based ROMs the same. Not sure what makes CandyRom different in that aspect. *
Once again, it may happen or it may not. You can either see it as a lottery or a ticking time bomb. Either way, I better go with the ROM that just does not have that possibility by design.
* EDIT: According to tr1gg3r84, CandyROM is not CM-based.

Glad I could help
If you could find some time in a week or two to report back about stability, performance and your overall experience, that info would be much appreciated!

Yeah get your facts correct before you post Candy Roms isn't even Cyanogen based like the rest you stated and no bricks have been made by using this ROM either. For a GPE I have a booting GPE over Six month ago before I got rid of my M4 with the help from rmbq with kernel but ever release it coz thought it was pointless.

I'm very sorry, based on official description provided in CandyROM's threads I thought it was (partly) CM-based. I'm a user, not a developer, so obviously I can't discuss what's under the hood, I have to distinguish based on information developers provide me.
Obviously, I was wrong, for what I apologize. I will correct my previous 2 posts accordingly right away.

Yeah well I should know what I'm on about, after supporting this device for so long before anyone even cared about developing for it....(well there's a lot of so called (Devs) that like to spread rumors about other ROMs to increase their user base) pretty much sick to death of it tbh. Apology accept and cheers for that. CandyRoms is a great ROM supported by over 30 devices and glad to be apart of the team of working hard developers

Good for you.
Thanks God, that bilal_liberty's thought it differently and shared it rather than just posting about it

[LP Roms][Poll][Note3 Revive Team] Weekly Support Rom Vote, Which do you want?

Vote for your Favourite *Unsupported* Rom to be given weeklies!
Please Note i will only support the N9005, hlte.
Why?
Currently the amount of lollipop AOSP/CM based roms for the Note 3 is running a tad short for my liking, i believe in choice and i believe that if you have the hardware to do it, why not? I will be running this poll for a week to see which Roms you guys want to see rolling out for the Note 3 and i will roll them out to you on a weekly basis, i can probably build a few roms in a day so the top few will be what i choose to support.
If you want a Rom added to the Poll just ask me and i'll add it, so what are you waiting for? Vote and i'll start rolling them out!

This one probably is just wishful thinking, due to the fact that back on JB/KK it was very difficult for the dev, now with LP it will be even more difficult.
There used to be a ROM for the S4 named BlackBox.
It was a hybrid between TouchWiz and AOSP, the dev ported AOSP frameworks and libraries to work with TouchWiz. The ROM was SICK. And not easy to do. Not sure if the ROM had an altogether different kernel or any TW kernel could work.
Wishful thinking... :/

That is probably beyond my skills as ive never ported, only built from source, however i'll get in touch with the developer of that Rom and see if he is willing to lend a hand to try get that going for the Note 3, i honestly thought there would be more interest on this thread thou..
Any AOSP/CM roms you want for weeklies haha?

As odd as it is, I got used to the close-to-stock TW ROMs. Don't mistake me, AOSP ROMs are fast as Hell, way more moddable, more beautiful, and I like that. However, for the way I use my Nope 3, close to stock suits my needs better.

It's rare you find a samsung device where people are actually happy with Touchwizz
So is no one interested in suggesting weeklies for an AOSP Rom? Or perhaps i should make a custom stock (Not that there are enough already)?
I honestly thought there would be more interest in this thread! What's going on guys??

I believe it might be something like this...
The user base needs something entirely different from the two (three if you count MIUI) options, we've got used to it. And some people might have the ideas for something different but lack the skills to do it. On one side you have AOSP (most of the AOSP ROMs function and behave almost the same; simple fact, not bashing the work of anyone, I don't have the knowledge to bash it ), on the other - TouchWiz. Both have their uses.
I lack the knowledge on how to do it, apparently the whole team of Samsung that makes TouchWiz doesn't (xDDDDDDDDDDDDD)... to combine all the functionality of the device at it's top performance with a really sleek UI implementation that's different enough to make the user treat and use the device differently.
Otherwise, I'd theme TW with black, grey, blue, holo colors n stuff and make the UI look like the control panel of some spaceship seen in sci-fi. The device itself carries the "Galaxy" moniker, ffs, and Samsung made it sound and look like a f***ing toy!
Making an AOSP ROM then stabilizing it, from what I've read, is no easy task for the whole Google team, it seems...
I am afraid that the Note 3 simply lacks the attraction to crackheaded devs who would tear Ubuntu Touch's a** in half, merge it with AOSP then slap that combination on top of whatever's left of TouchWiz. xD We have most of the major AOSP ROMs, can't tweak too much TW because of it's damn closed source, and... that's that. :/
Sorry if this was incoherent.
P.S. I am also sorry if any of this seems disrespectful, I don't mean it to be, given the fact that you're willing to actually build the ROM that's most demanded. Wish you luck.
Those are 2 recognize ROMs since my Nexus 5.

Well when i hit 10 posts, and perhaps a little more interest is gathered in the thread then i can get these builds of vanir and nameloss rolling out to the community.
I am suprised thou i really am that no one seems to use AOSP/CM roms on the galaxy note 3!
