Survey says: Ideal ROM should have... - T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide

...what?
I noticed that it generally is a request randomly for this feature or that option, or requests within dev threads themselves or random threads entirely (off topic type 'wouldn't this be cool!')
So what would be cool?
What's on the wish list?
For me i'd love to experience two things:
USB OTG. My S3 broke it for me. Not having it at all was fine, but after integrating that function so fully into my Android life being without it is ...beyond words.
Second thing i'd like is to have the tv-out be an additional display instead of a mirrored display. Plugging into a bigger screen is absolutely awesome - but sometimes it would be nice to have the option of increasing my digital work space instead of just seeing it bigger.
...so not exactly easy things to start us off with, but anything goes.
What do you guys want out of your ROMs?
Maybe this can help inspire devs to include popular ideas by moving the suggestions to a neutral place instead of having to search the whole doubleshot forum for random ideas. Maybe become a good place for someone to cruise by looking for something to do.
What do we like?

great idea to post this thread!
im not one in need of too much, but i do like options. i remember when ezterry came up with the yes no binary script to attach to roms/updates i was amazed we could run code during an update that takes over the screen and user input. it took like two years for someone to polish it up and make the aroma installer, now i find that to be a must in roms. being able to adjust so much prior to even installing a rom is amazing to me still.
so yeah, i look for what most else do, stable, good battery life, speed, nice camera, better than stock. so the only thing i would add to the list everyone else has is make a rom as customizable as possible!

Cm9.1 states in OP USB on the go works on experimental kernel

I would LOVE to see a rom with all of the senses. (A lot of data) or at least 3 sense versions. (Still alot) update with the other HTC sense devices. HTC one series of course, 100%. That's it. It doesn't sound like much but even regular HTC device don't have more than 1 sense version on it so. Yea. That's a request highly impossible. But u never know. We have top notch devs over here

OTG would indeed be great.
I also like as many settings as possible--particularly colors and visual stuff. My old G1 had a CM rom that had options for every color and font used, I think, and it was great. You could change the sensitivity of the trackball and all that kind of detail stuff. That level of control is fantastic, and I'd love to have it back.

For me just additional tweaks to the sense 4 ROMs and a full fix for the wifi hotspot is very enough for me

Full backwards compatibility with all apps.
Stable overclock.
The full use of the DS camera.

That and a shark with frickin' laser beams coming out of its head.
What would be truly epic is if the laser shark was flying the rocket pack.
DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!
Or maybe JB with stable fast and fully functional interface and a camera that is identical to or better than the stock ds camera.
Might have better luck asking for the flying shark..
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement

like some people said above, i feel like for a lot of people, being able to use the full power of this phone's camera is a big thing. and i guess better battery life?

I'll see your humor, and raise to an idea:

There is work being done into using Android in robotics. Also, at cheap retail you can get a remote controlled helicopter with app support for flight control.
We are devs here, so having that app interaction with the remote controlled device is a springboard to what we actually need.
So the helicopter bit gives us the interaction with the device, and the flight aspect with a solid base to build on for what we need.
We can definitely get a laser from overseas that will cut things, in a portable package like a laser pointer.
I'm sure we could build something in the shape of a shark. I'm thinking we can disassemble a doubleshot and use the tv-out function to mirror the screens, then use two for the eyes. (else write a custom home screen that splits in two with a small gap between on the screen, and fit into the shark head behind where the eyes would be.)
Then the processsor and stuff would be where the brain was, and you could install the keyboard to the top or back of the head. Retain the slide mechanism, and you could have it push button slide out of the mouth or something.
So our roadblocks now:
-Shark mold. Still yet to be determined in size based on some requirements:
-Amphibious. It's a shark, right? We need to look into remote control boats and subs to see how to do this.
-Maybe mount a second laser...

...since it was pluralized.
-Some way of targeting the lasers. I'd like to add some manner of aiming, so it needs to be able to move the lasers without moving the machine. Maybe a combination of GPS and accelerometer combined with the camera for output to whatever controller we have so we can make a targeting mechanism.
Lots of prior art exists to make this from so it's about a done deal.
-Power. Power is going to be our biggest issue. The doubleshot is self sufficent, maybe get a couple of mugens and build a docking bay for them where you could plug in 4 or 5 that the doubleshot could use just like the one in the phone while it's on. Heck, we already disassembled it and built the parts into the beast, so this upgrade makes sense. If we can use this battery bank for the rest of the machine - lasers and the flying/swimming bit, then 4 or 5 might not be enough.
-Weight. If it's gonna fly, it's already too heavy with the doubleshot. Add batteries and it's a serious hurdle to overcome. Helicopter blades aren't gonna cut it so this:

...translates the joke into the only logical blueprint to pull it off.
So now we are off to model rockets, and the solid fuel rocket engines. It's okay to refuel a one-burn stage of flight now because that's how that would work. We have many, many years of hobbyist activity to pull from for materials and knowledge.
We can set up a multi-stage flight mechanism and having the doubleshot in the machine allows us to control when those stages ignite, not just one setting off the next.
Hell, we may even be able to fit a rotating barrel or three of engines in the belly of the shark that will serve up stage after stage of engines to be ignited for continued flight. At this point we may very well be looking at orbital capabilities. Why not - go big, right?
Maybe a parachute would be a good thing to incorporate, and being as it's a frickin' shark, we can splash-down for landing somewhere. So play with it by a lake or something. You won't have to go get it, because it can swim, so you just pop out the propeller from the underside-rear, located internally behind the rotating top-serve engines, and drive it to where you are.
Bonus points if on a dock or boat so you don't have to beach it to get it.
(thanks for giving me an outlet for something creative to wander through while printing a ton of pictures)

+ 1 for full camera function. Also, not a huge deal at all, but the CAPS/ALT LEDs function would be nice too.
I might be alone with this one, but I remember in the G1 days, when I press the phone icon to make a call and just start typing the name of a contact, it would automatically search my contacts and start showing matching names, and I could quickly call someone. Some DS ROMs do this, some don't, but it's a cool, quick way to call someone who's not on the recently called list.
Really, I'm just listing the minor things in CM 9.1 that bug me in an otherwise perfect ROM lol
A little off topic, but since we're all speculating: being able to boot from SD card would be boss.
edit: seems this is already possible with an app

Although I know a couple of other things too, something I've just wished is that we could use the original DS camera in any ROM we wanted AND it would be really handy if it came with IR features for pics & video. Upgradable RAM would be a GREAT feature too.....maybe up to 2gb...if you think of just a HW feature.

Why? CM9.1 is improved in almost every way over CM7.

I am also a fan of the bluetooth controller bit. Sixaxis app and a ps3 controller - especially one without the rumble pack - is pretty handy. Remote camera shutter trigger, for one, it's not just good for games.
Also think that codec support for a variety of audio/video filetypes should be built in. Working avi support for one. I have gigs and gigs of video i've shot and converted to avi because over the years digital storage space has not been as prevalent or as cheap as it is today.
One day i'll have everything converted to .mp4, but this is years of home video we are talking about. I'd like to play it to a tv through the device without it crashing sometime in the next calendar year, which won't be happening with having to convert it all to .mp4 first.

No detail too small - and i'd hardly dismiss any part of the hardware not functioning properly as no big thing. I don't think that's being unreasonable?
Sometimes it can be a convoluted process on the dev side to get the most basic of things working right. In the context of a wish list the various little things that bug people, or that they think would be cool to have are the gems this thread is aiming to find.

I like this thread! I agree with most people's answers.
We definitely should have working TV out.
We should have our Alt and Caps light working and all other capabilities of the harware keyboard as it was THE reason I bought this over Sensation at the time of purchase
DS camera should be included or at least an equal or better replacement. Losing face detection, burst shot, panorama, and 1080P is not a step forward.
What I hear people saying is...(or maybe it's just how I feel) our phone has some really great features out of the box and it would be nice if we could take that strong base and develop it further to add more options and tweaks without having to sacrifice the best features of our ROM. Maintaining these features and bringing ICS or JB to the table would be fabulous but honestly, if we just made our own base ROM more feature rich, I could live with that....maybe dress it up with some better themes.
It's those little things missing from ROMs that make me always come back to the stock based ROMs. I just brought Netflix to a friend's house last night by hooking my phone to his TV and I caught him up on Walking Dead. I'll personally take that ability over a few points on a benchmark or something.
Trackpad wake/sleep is another for me. I LOVE that when I'm on a stock based ROM like Bulletproof and MikTouch that when I hear a notifaction sound of a text, I can comfortably hit the trackpad to wake the phone but not unlock, read the text and then put the phone back to sleep with the same button.....same thing when I want to check the time.
It's the little things...
Oh yeah that sixaxis feature that Blue6IX has been hoping for since day one does sound pretty awesome!!

[REQUEST] autorotate animation

I don't know if thus is the right place to post this. So mods have at it and move if needed. Would it be possible to have an app that'll animate the screen during use of the autorotate feature? Obviously I have no clue on how to code

Think "rotating an iPhone", he wants that fancy flip the entire screen effect present on Apple products. I love it so much, Steve may be mean - but Apple has perfect graphic and visual designers.
+1 it's extremely well polished. Granted it's not the instantaneous rotation that Android provides but it sure looks nice!

I actually thought there would be an animation a long time ago. Anyone remember the G1 zooming cube animation?
There was an animation back on 1.5 however within the source code it was commented out in 1.6 and then deleted all together on 2.1 . I read that it isn't possible to adapt to 2.1 because surface flinger lies on top of open gl. Could any developers get this running again? I'm sure it would be a lot quicker on the nexus one than the magic.
Yeah, that's definitely one of those many little things that make the Nexus look less polished than the iPhone (And don't get me wrong, I hate the iPhone )
+1 to this!
Perhaps something simple like a fading display. Or Have the background rotate first and have the icons and widgets rotate at a slower rate, so it looks like the foreground is trying to "catch up" to the background
I would take anything animated, i hate the fact that when i rotate my screen its just so still!
But i think its better for faster screen rotation.
this much talk and no developers chiming in.. don't think this is going anywhere..
YEAH THIS IS ABOUT AS LIKELY AS GETTING A FRIKKIN FLIP CLOCK THAT FRIKKIN FLIPS... AAHHHH THE OL' JACHERO DAYS! i SEE PHONES HALF AS POWERFUL BY HTC W/ THE CLOCK FRIKKIN FLIPPIN AWAY!
BACK ON TOPIC I TOO WOULD LOVE THIS IN ANY FASHION AS LONG AS THE DELAY (AND IT WILL SLOW THE TRANSITION DOWN) IS MINIMAL! HOWEVER I USE SENSE SO ROTATION IS A WHOLE NOTHER GAME THERE!

experience with the epic

just rooted my buddies epic, which was definitely not as smooth as the captivate, and got to play around with it for a bit. i have to say, not impressed. feels like a big bulky clunker. not as refined as the captivate and is really a pain in the ass to root. tinkering with the epic made me appreciate my captivate that much more.
anyways just my short story of the day..
Thanks for sharing.
Can you give an example of how the phone was not smooth plz. Everyone else says that its smoother stock than the captivate
Sent from my phone so excuse the spelling errors
the process to root the phone is what i was referring to as not as smooth as our phones. there is a "one click" root for the epic but it took multiple tries to get the
1 click program to even see the phone and then once it saw the phone it was another issue to get the root over to the phone. not an easy update.zip like our phones.
the speed of the phone felt the same as the captivate stock vs. stock. once the dev's get a good root package down for the epic it will be better.
one other thing i didn't like about the epic is that there is no way to change what shortcuts you have running in the touchwiz tray. its the little things i guess.

it is noticeably heavier than my captivate with the body glove case on it. also the battery cover that it uses is SO cheap. its one piece of very thin plastic that clips on to the back with some really weak clips. i pulled the cover off of his phone with my non existent fingernails with great ease.
EPIC is stuck with an older version of TouchWiz 2.5 and lacks quite a few features TW 3 has on Captivate. The reason is because of the required landscape support for home screen when keyboard slids out.
Why not bake in landscape support on 3.0? Is it that radically different?

Well uh, I love my Captivate, but lets face it, Samsung hasn't exactly gone the extra mile on these phones.
That's how they get released with things like GPS issues or the lag troubles, etc. (Or the slower 2.2 upgrades.) Could Samsung have built in landscape on 3.0 and make it work with a not unreasonable amount of effort? Absolutely. Did they have to move units? Obviously not. So did they? Nope.

EPIC is the first slider in Galaxy S line. Samsung could wait 6 more months (or even more) to add landscape support in TW 3.0 or release the phone now and sell millions. It's a no brainer.

While that may be true, it didn't take them years to release landscape mode in subsequent releases. If Samsung has figured out landscape in a previous version, I find it a little hard to believe it would have been more than a couple weeks to port it over.
Its not like Samsung's QC is super high. If they ported it and FUBAR'd yet another thing its not like many people would have been surprised.
Then again, im not a programmer, so maybe my POV is unrealistic and skewed.

WISHLIST to the DEVS

Hello guys... had my Sensation for almost 2months now, but most of the time just in my drawer coz i also have S2...
after i knew about the progress of S-off, i did it on my Sensation...
ok, im spoil with lots of custom ROM of S2 and numbers of Kernels to choose from... though S2's board is a bit messy because of "politics" among devs/mods/admins...
I understand that we only have S-off for a short time (compared to S2) thats why mods/tweaks/etc isnt as much as S2... im considering using Sensation as my main phone now, S2 have to rest
Here's what i want to see in the future:
1. Better battery management - i dont know about 2.3.3 builds because started mine with 2.3.4 ("Insertcoin" specifically)... im approaching to 30hrs of my moderate-heavy usage on my S2 (You can check Batista's latest build with Ninpehtamine 2.0.2 Kernel)... I know the fact that the display takes most of our battery and its S2's SAMOLED+ forte specially when its dsplaying most of the UI in black... so im not expecting it to be in line with S2, but we can optimizr the whole system to be more efficient... I want also to be able to Underclock and Undervolt the CPU like what i did with S2, though there are ways through Daemon, but i want it with graphical interface like that of Set-cpu...
2. Make use of the Internals - So we have 1.2Ghz Dual Core cpu (old architecture) + Adreno 220... its powerful and more than enough, though not as beastly as Exynos+Mali combo... i dont know if its possible but the Devs here are able to force GPU for handling the UI (thats what i read), why not push the bounderies and make it able to assisst the browser and the video player (stock or thirdparty)... I dig some infos that Sensation also do also pack descent Audio chips (Wolfson-but not the variant we found on Tab and S1), why not make a mods to make most of its potential... (Hello Supercurio) I know we have some progress on camera specially on videos, keep it up guys...
3. Software/Misc - How about an Odex system? (for quicker initial bootups of custom ROMs, less memory consumed, less storage used in /data due to the fact that pre-optimised dex files are stored on /system already [save space and boost performance]).. De-odex is just useful for themeing, but hell we have the Beautiful SENSE...
how about Phone.apk with voice recorder embeded to record the conversation? Mods to make the volume Key as a shutter in camera app? and etc?
Is this Thread serious? Guy you call for features that need time to develope and the Dev´s are on it. Like using the GPU in browser.

Get beautiful widgets + Animation package from the market if you really miss having windshield wipers eat your battery when it's raining and all those other animations. And it's already been mentioned that most of the things on your wishlist already exist.
If you want better sound you should write HTC and ask them to send you a pair of BEATZ audio headphones, it should be covered under warranty now amiright!? =P
JK but SRS BZNS but some ROMS actually do have external speaker volume boosted, and whilst volume plus has been reported as a battery drainer, or a legit solution or some combination of both by others, there are some DSP packs and at least music players (like Player Pro) who's extended EQ settings come with a Pre-Amp that does a pretty good job if you have half-way decent headphones.
Also, you might want to just edit the gain of your MP3's to normalize them around 89 decibels or higher if you prefer.
What's on my wish-list you say? Support the devs monetarily and thank them for their hard work, methinks it goes further than these threads can.

RFC: Fix Voodoo Sound or USB-OTG?

I might be able to get back into dev mode as the SGS4G starts to fade into the sunset (yeah, mine turned two today) and there are a couple core things that are bugging me in the kernel and/or low-level code.
One is that when you get off a call, the Voodoo Sound features related to control of the analog and digital gain don't seem to work any more.
The other would be getting more storage available (for music, see the theme here?) through USB-OTG. I know most wont be interested in streaming audio to an off-board DAC, so let's assume this stops with USB mass storage (namely, clipping on another 64 GB chip in a micro-reader with a USB-OTG cable).
Preferences for where to start first, if at all? If not one of these things, what is bugging you with the current kernels and/or low-level services? (No, I can't fix the crappy GPS).
Welcome back.
Fixing the voodoo issue would be tops on my list. That being said though I don't use my phone with the sim card in very often any more. It's more of a music player. If you want anything tested feel free to shoot me a PM.
As far as the crappy GPS goes I don't know if you've seen this but it fixed GPS for me on all MTD ROMs that I've used since:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37139165&postcount=20
Others have had less then stellar results but I believe our current crop of kernels can handle it once that line is added. So not much to fix there really. IMO
Voodoo Sound all day bro.

Voted for Voodoo Sound, since it's the bug rather than the FReq. New features are all nice and shiny, but if you chrome plate a cockroach, it's still a cockroach. Bugs-begone first, then add the fancy electroplating.
my vote would be for USB-OTG cuz about 65% of my microSD's memory is music and I'd love to be able to transfer that to a USB drive and just use that

[Q] Roms: What do you lose? What can you replace?

I've been trying to sift through everything that's out there about different roms, but am still unclear on a number of items.
So, I have a choice between touchwiz android 4.1 based roms, or open source roms. Moving away from Touchwiz what is it exactly I would be losing?
Does S-note disappear? S-memo? Is there any app that would replace the s-memo function to double tap the screen and bring up a floating note?
How much of multi window is lost? How much can be replaced? Is cascade view still something that can be added back in?
What s-pen functions are lost? What can be replaced (or improved)?
Overall, if I were to leave Touchwiz entirely, what is lost and what can be replaced with non Samsung counterparts?
Currently, I have Android Revolution HD with Holo Launcher HD on top of that. Any better suggestions? I went with Android Revolution because I was tired of reading and had to start somewhere, so I'm definitely also interested in opinions on a better setup.
Thanks.

Thanks.

Are you just curious about other ROM's or is there something that you need that touch wiz does not offer?
Because as far as I know you will lose S Pen function going to a non-touch wiz ROM and that defeats the reason for owning the Note 10.1.
If you want to see what some of the other ROM's offer Zedomax has a very good web page http://rootgalaxynote.com/. Lots of content for all version of the galaxy note.
He has video reviews of a lot of popular ROM's and you can sign up for his news letters if you like what he has to say, one that I like is "ROM of the week"
If you want to jump right to his Galaxy Note 10.1 ROM's page go here http://rootgalaxynote.com/category/galaxy-note-10-1-roms/
And here is a link to his you tube video page where he has video's on just about everything http://www.youtube.com/user/zedomax Max seems like a very cool guy that love's life and ANDROID

Thanks, but I've been over all that. I just still feel uncertain about aspects. I see alot of things that are essentially alluded to, but rarely clearly laid out. For instance, in your response, you say "as far as I know you will lose the s-pen function..." Whereas as I was starting to be under the impression that while you would lose many items such as snote, you would still have the spen, and be able to use apps like GMD S PenControl.
I'm not saying what I just wrote is true, but that it is still a point of some confusion, among other things.

That's why I posted the links to rootgalaxynote.com because Max goes over the functions that are gained and lost.
Take the time to download and watch them,..... its very helpful.
Revolt Rom video would be a good place to start http://androidrooted.com/file/GalaxyNote10.1/roms/RevoltJB/RevoltJBROMNote10.1.mp4

I watched a bunch of them. On all the AOSP roms I watched him review he just doesn't even mention the s-pen, and in the comments section will just be a few people asking what the deal for the spen is and not having any reply to it.
I agree for the most part, those videos were very helpful. I used one of his videos to root my note. And I'm sure it exists somewhere, but in the time I spent mucking through everything there is, I haven't found where it is clearly laid out what you lose, and what can be done to regain those functions when going to AOSP. I just see bits and pieces buried here and there. I suppose that's what happens when I come this late to it all, the backlog of info is immense, and things covered early on get buried.

That video does talk about s pen function @ about the 2:00 mark.
GMD spen controller ........ you could contact the developer ... here is the video link on you tube for the app in action https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=e3WGO-OZQ2k
Do you know about the 15 minute return policy on the play store?????????
If you are not happy with the app you can get a refund if you un-install it before 15 minutes have passed. https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/134336?hl=en

I don't mean any of this in a harsh tone, but instead to hopefully get what I'm looking for:
If you would like to answer my questions, great. If you want to keep pointing at things when I tell you I've already seen them, please stop.
The purpose of this question was to determine what would be worth investing time and effort in and to gain some insight from people who have done it themselves already.
Again, if you would like to answer the original questions, I would appreciate that. These have not been what I'm looking for in terms of being a brief concise, summary, and overview
I get that you lose things from going to an AOSP, and that you can replace certain items with apps. My question is about what exactly do you lose, what are the apps that replace it, and how good of a job do they do.

Of coarse you do.
.
Why don't you just stick with a rooted stock ROM?
I'd like to be able to keep up with new development regardless of what Samsung does. All the touchwiz roms seem to be limited to 4.1 (unless I've misunderstood). So sticking with touchwiz based roms will could be an issue depending on what Samsung does with updates.

From what I understand you will loose any apps that require the TC framework - S-Notes don't work and some other apps...
However there are alternative apps like lecture notes that are, apparently supported using the s-pen.... If you read through the CM10 rom threads you might get a better idea, or ask there if it works, you might get a definite answer...
I believe I've read that the s-pen works but I like having my status as "Official" so I can use my Allcast hub... You loose that ability if the status changes....
The only difference between ASOP based and stock/stock based is the TW framework. But most of the features are replaceable.
This is what I have done to make my life easy with ASOP roms
What i miss
A- No replacement yet
- Mutiwindow - No replacement yet
- Lasso screenshot.
- Miss the samsung keyboard - This is the best keyboard for handwriting recognition. No issues with my horrible handwriting. Wish somebody ported it.
B- Alternatives
-Get most of the spen gestures ( except for lasso screen shot) using GMD spen
- S note replacement - use lecture notes and triggered via gmd spen gesture
Rest of the stuff is all there in asop based roms for my use.
Big positives
- Parnoid features.
- Love the status bar at the top option.
-Navigation bar sized down.
-Plenty of small tweaks
-Another big positive is the availability of USB mass storage mode. Very very helpful
Will update this post as more things come to my mind
What about battery life between stock and AOSP roms?
