Is this where I'd ask about gmail on my 700 tablet? I have this mail program but want to know if anyone else is having trouble with Contacts and Groups. As we all know, there is no phone support for anything Google so I have to dig through the Internet.
It's my understanding that Gmail on your mobile device does NOT match the capabilities of Gmail on your PC.
If this isn't the place to learn from this group, can you direct me?

I cannot access Groups or Contacts. E.G., I want to send an email to all the members of a Group I've configured on my Gmail PC. On the PC, I just type in Book Club and all the members' names come up and off I go.
This does not occur with gmail on my 700. Type in Book Club and you get zip. Ditto for my Galaxy II. Forums say you can't do it on mobile. Is this NUTS!? Google is the biggest elephant on the planet and what do you do if you don't have a PC handy and want to send an email to a Group?
And there's no Contacts button on the 700 like there is on my phone: apparently, because the 700 isn't a phone? That's what's been posited.
Help? Google can't be that obtuse, can it?

Use a web browser to access gmail. Be sure to set it for Desktop.

I've been accessing my gmail accounts via Firefox. Its just barely tolerable. You can get an email out, but its painful. And it doesn't help very much to use a Bluetooth keyboard, though it does a bit.
Yes, you can use the GMail app to email to your Gmail groups... It's actually very simply - basically, just open the contacts app (called "People" in recent Android versions) - then select groups and you can see and email to your Gmail groups from there...

Thanx, that worked great on my Galaxy S2, but I can't do it on my 700. What am I missing?
I found the People app and placed it on my desktop. I opened it, found the Groups. I hit the Book Club group, up came all the names. BUT....that's it. I tried the long-press trick, but nothing happens when you do that.
Please oh please help me through this one: I really need to use my 700 to send group mail!

Isn't that too unbelievable to be true?? Google/Gmail is one of the most ubiquitous and powerful entities around. You can't perform such a simple task as that??

I come from a TP where I really liked HTC's integration of facebook in Sense. Not too invasive and living quite well with my exchange account
Right now my contacts in my outlook (2011) on my PC are linked with their facebook profile, and so are they in Sense. With my Tab I worry a little bit about putting a mess in a system that has found its balance
Any risk to duplicate contacts if I use the Samsubg app ? Or the Android app ? Will they merge properly with my exchnage contacts ? Stay aside ?
I just dont wnat to make the step to find out after I messed up my contact list (More than 1200 people so clenaing that up would take me a few days....)

The built-in one is pretty much for synching only, any actual facebook viewing would need to be done via the browser.
I switched from the built-in SNS client to the official Facebook client and didn't experience any problems.

The built-in app is just meant to sync your existing contacts on the phone and match them with facebook friends ? Or it adds all the facebook friends ?
The official app doesnt do this ?
Don't get the account permissions confused if you install the market app. Its annoying to find you gave the stock app permissions that arent on the market app.

Both versions sync contact pictures etc. The official app gives you the option to sync pictures+status updates with all friends, just those with existing contact entries, or none at all.

Anyone ? Maybe I am making too much fuss about this but I dont wnat to mes up my exchange contact list...
Not 100% sure about this, but I don't think it will mess up any of your existing contacts.
When logging in using the official Facebook app, it will create a sort of 'profile' for all existing contacts -- it won't merge info with the actual contact. You'll see this when you edit a contact, there will be 2 (or more) tabs when editing the contact.
It's like a 'Metacontact' in Trillian wherein it's only a merged 'View' of a contact, but in reality the data is in separate 'profiles'. The Facebook tab is uneditable and will only display info.
The only problem I have so far is that when creating a new SMS, it will display -ALL- contact numbers and e-mail address of contacts, even if the number is exactly the same:
i.e. I have a contact named Bob Smith in my Google, Exchange and Facebook accounts, and they are merged as one account. In the Dialer, all the info is merged into one contact when displaying, but when editing, they are editable in 3 separate tabs.
However when I create an SMS and scroll to find Bob Smith, it displays all contact infos of Bob Smith, even duplicate ones, like if I have his number +123456789 on Google and Exchange and Facebook, it displays 3 same numbers when selecting a recipient.
Edit:
Also, when you sign out or remove the Facebook app, it will delete the Facebook 'profile' of the contact on your contacts list, maintaining the state of the previous contact before you logged in / installed Facebook.

I already saw the mess it was having google contacts and exchnage contacts (I usually maintain both... for 1200 contacts!) The worst is for contacts for which I entered only the first name... they happen to be all merged together (Well done samsung... They could have defined a merge key a bit larger than just the name........)

I need to replace my laptop by the note 10.1 . In order for me to do that I need the mail i receive to appear exactly as they are now on my LT using Thunderbird or outlook, that is in folders ( actually many) in a split mode to the left , each showing a new message or not, and the right part of the screen is showing all the messages of the folder that is touched. The same way an ordinary client with folders behaves.
I need also this arrangement to be in POP3 and not IMAP, so when the ,messages are downloaded, it stay in the folders for good.
The arrangement I have for the folders set up on my galaxy SII ( native email client or Maildroid not satisfying at all. I have to have the folders in separate page, the flip to the content in a second page.
Can someone tell me that can happens ? and what is the email client name ?
One more question please, can I backup my files/email from the note to removable disk ? I can not back up Online/On air because of the limited data plan.

The simple answer is you cannot replace your tablet with your laptop full time, as far as getting the same email experience I think again have not used it but you can get it on a w8 tablet the problem with note is when you write an email the onscreen keyboard comes up and takes ups almost 1/3 of your space even if you have an external keyboard and becomes even worst with the email app so no you will not get the same exact experience
But yes the email and gmail apps are full fledge apps which can do almost all that outlook can do only when it comes to email

Thank you Samir for your detailed answer. I have the same problem with any email client on my galaxy SII, I have only one line to type. I hope as you said that the email and gmail apps can do as the outlook, because they do NOT do that on my phone. The UI is far from what I want and not comparable at all to that on my LT( see the attached pic).
But on principle, sine all I do on my LT is to email and write letters via MS office ( really nothing more) , I feel confident that I can almost replace my LT with the tablet , if only can be sure from the way that the email clients will behave on the tablet.

Give touchdown a try. I set this up for staff at work, gives you pretty much what Outlook does; of course ui is a little diiferent to Outlook, but quite a full featured email client for android.

May be there is something I did not mention before. My email accounts are not corporate , one of them is a personal gmail, the other is a business one on a domain hosted by a company.
That should not be a problem as gmail supports pop or imap and the domain one also should do the same

When I mentioned full featured it was only with respect to mails and not address book calender etc and what i ment was in terms of opening attachments and so yes there are lots of things you cannot do cant have an html signature limited options with send and receive cannot make and define rules and so on
What all would people recommend for email.
I have been using the stock app on my phone but it's a bit restricted I think.
I've tried K9 but it's so fecking convoluted and overly complicated.
All I want is an app that will allow me to access multiple accounts easily, and quite simple delete an email which will then be deleted from my mail provider server.
I've tried to set this up on K9 and it just won't work. Having turned on my laptop I've just found I have hundreds of mails still on my account which I thought I'd deleted! Having come from Apple I'm now a fully fledged android convert but the one thing that Apple does better is mail management!

Make sure you have your email app set up as IMAP (& IMAP authorised on your email account) that way your email will sync. It sounds like it's currently set up as POP which just downloads copies of your email. POP doesn't mark as read or delete from your account. IMAP does.

Ok, so I delete one account from k9 and set it back up bit this time add imap and it's now working more like I want it too. However, the app is still showing costs that don't exist when I look at the account on my laptop. I deleted some folders from my account.?

A friend of mine is getting her first ever smartphone and I want to help her transition as smoothly as possible. She will not give up her Hotmail account, so I need to find an app that will give her access to her emails, and preferably gives push notifications and allows easy attaching of documents.
I've been suckling on the Google/GMail teat for years and was mildly surprised when I 'unfroze' the native email app - it seems pretty decent. But it only gives options for attaching of pictures or videos, unlike the GMail app which has a generic 'attach file' button. Obviously I know that I could find my document using a file browser or other app and then 'share' it to the Email app, but this sort of 'well you can't do it this way, you have to do it that way' crap is what I want to avoid for my friend. I want everything to be obvious, easy and for her introduction to Android to be effortless.
Any suggestions, please? A free email app, with push, and easy file attachments of all types.
EDIT: I have just signed up for a Hotmail account so I can test apps myself. The Outlook.com app seems alright - anyone got experience using it? Any fatal flaws?
Try using [email protected] Mail Pro app. I use it since it pretty much unifies all of my email accounts in a neat way with plenty of customizations available for your taste. I especially like the fact that unlike with the built in app, I can create a unified email widget for all my accounts instead of having multiple widgets and it allows me to attach any kind of file, and has a pretty advanced editor. Try the free version first and see if you'd like to upgrade to the pro.

I recently purchased the Moto G 4G LTE and have been having a blast with it. It was simple to unlock the bootloader, add TWRP, and root the device. It was also simple to unbloat the device since it did not have much bloatware on to begin with. Over all I am really pleased with my purchase.
I did change out the SMS app because the original was very bland. However, the email app was driving me crazy. So I spent a better part of the day looking at the available free email apps to see which one I would prefer over the stock app. I was totally disappointed when I found that all the apps I tried did not work well with GMail. Each app would fetch the test mail from GMail and then delete the mail preventing me for using Outlook to download the mail to my PC. No matter what I tried, the app would either delete or "mark as read" and my Outlook could not retrieve it.
It seems the only email app that worked in keeping the GMail intact was the stock email app on the phone. But I don't like it because it does not tell me if it is sync'ing with the server and downloading or not. So I have no way of knowing except if an email is download it will give me a notification. It won't even give me the last sync timestamp.
Anyone using an email app that works with GMail (retrieve but leave unaltered), AND, you can also download the email with Outlook?
What's wrong with using the actual Gmail app and syncing on your Outlook?
There's going to be a combination of Gmail POP3 settings and mail client settings that will determine if a message is deleted from the server or not upon retrieval.
I use the free version of Maildroid, it works great with what I use, being Outlook, MSN, and Gmail. Puts everything into one place.
I don't understand why, but the OEM email does not affect the mail on GMail. When I access the mail and download it to my phone, I can then access the same email from Outlook on my PC and download the same mail. But using other applications like K-10 and Aquamail, when I download the mail to my phone I cannot access with Outlook on my PC. So the other mail programs must be doing something that the OEM email app is not doing. Strange. I have also tried some different settings in GMail to no avail.
I cannot comment about the apps that you have mentioned, but providing the app that you choose uses IMAP then the various email clients should maintain synchronization with each other. @Darkshado mentioned POP3. I used to have problems with Hotmail using POP3, but since they implemented IMAP the problems have disappeared. I can confirm that Maildroid works correctly, you can choose in settings whether or not to delete messages off the server.

I have added AdBlock and the ads are gone. The other mail programs had all the same options but did not do what I wanted. Very frustrating because I liked their aesthetics. But like you said, live and learn...
I use K9. It's open source and has pretty advanced settings to manage synchronization and server actions. It takes some to to configure, but that can be an advantage...
K-9 was another one I tested that did not work for me. Appreciate the response though. Some of these mail programs look really nice. K-9 was one of them, I just wish it would not molest the mail so I can download it later into my Outlook mail for archiving.

I have used Adblock Plus for the longest on my Firefox browser PC and Tablet. So I went with what I know best, AdbLock Plus ver 1.2.1. On my free apps I see absolutely no ads. Wonderful.
Thanks for the pointer. Apparently it's banned from the Play Store, no wonder that I didn't find it. I did try another one called Adblock which is on Play Store and it seemed to do nothing at all.
