[Q] Weird Screen Issues - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 on Monday at my local Verizon store. Everything has been working great, but I hadn't really gotten a chance to play with it till last night as far as video is concerned. I downloaded Netflix and started watching a show. I noticed some dark areas on the screen. It was four very noticeable spots. I ignored it at first, but after a minute or two it started to annoy me. I decided to try a different show, and then I tried Youtube. The same spots were still there. You cannot see these spots unless the background is very dark.
Is this a common problem? Do I need to take this phone back and exchange it? If I do, are they going to tell me I am out of luck, or charge me to replace it? I have been on Sprint, so I am unfamiliar with how Verizon works. I know I can exchange it for a different phone for $36 if worse comes to worse, but I really like the S3.
And just for reference, the phone has not even been so much as set down without the utmost care(I also have an expensive case on it). I wanted to make sure I did not break it before the exchange policy was up, in case I did not like it and needed to change it out.

It is amoled technology. Google amoled ink spots, its a common occurence with amoled screens. So there is nothing wrong with your phone.

yeah i noticed it too, only happens in netflix when going black in between show transitions.
No biggie, only visible in the dark on black screens.

Problem with display

Anyone notice some issues with the display showing some ghosting/persistence of the previous image when switching to a display/app with a very gray color such as the Amazon Appstore app? Easiest way I can see is when I load up something like the Android market, let it sit for 5 or so seconds, then load up the Amazon Appstore (it helps to have them previously loaded so you can just switch between the two), you can see some lines and images left over from the Android Market in the grey areas in the Amazon Appstore. For me it's easiest to see under the 'My Apps' part as there is a lot of gray.
This seems to happen at all brightness levels but mostly when the unit is just first turned on. After using the unit for a few minutes the ghosting/persistence of previous images doesn't happen as easily. Once you notice this thing, it's hard to not notice it. I can even notice it in the small gray bars in the Pulse application, for instance. Seems rather annoying. I've had a couple of Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus's before this one and did not notice this issue, but it doesn't mean it wasn't there and I just missed it. Oddly this display seems better than my previous units in the fact that the color is more uniform, as the other ones had more yellowing towards the right side of the display (when in portrait mode) than this one. However, this ghosting/persistence issue is really bugging me.
I have a couple of Kindle Fire's and a Dell Streak 7 and a Lenovo Thinkpad tablet, and have had numerous other tablets, but have never noticed this before.
I've attached photos. You can see one is just of the Android Market. The 2nd is of me loading up the Amazon Appstore right after and you can see the ghost image of the Android Market in the gray areas.
Obviously this would not show up in a screenshot as it's a screen artifact, so I took pictures with my phone camera.
How long does it take an image to ghost the screen? How long does it take the ghosting to disappear?
For example, I was going to the Android Market app for only a few seconds. 5 or so seconds. When I then went to the Amazon Appstore app, it takes many many minutes for the ghosting to disappear.
It seems after using the device for 20 or so minutes straight, the ghosting doesn't happen. But if I put the tab down for 30 minutes and test again, it all happens again the same way.
It's pretty horrible looking. Not sure if it's just a bad one I got or if this is normal. Pretty sure this one is going back though. Sigh, I really like this tab.
i haven't really experienced this with my P6200 with DXKL3 firmware and even with my past firmwares
This is a P6210 R62 serial. UEKL1 firmware.
I just downgraded to UEKK3 (couldn't find anything older) and the problem is still there. Did a factory reset too of course.
Can anyone else test this and let me know what they see? I'm on the brink of my return policy and need to figure out if this is a defect or just a normal thing with these PLS screens. It seems to only be an issue with the color gray.
Neither of my P6210's displays exhibit any ghosting.

Definitely do not have this problem with mine:

This seems to be possibly a problem with displays lately. People are calling it 'burn-in' but it's not the same as the old traditional CRT 'burn-in'. To me I could only really see it on a gray screen. If I went to the browser and opened a white screen, it wasn't there. But certain shades of gray made it very obvious.
If you search around it appears people are having issues with it most recently with the transformer prime. Either way, I did return the galaxy tab 7.0 plus. The problem was driving me nuts. I have a Kindle Fire that didn't have the problem, and I couldn't justify keeping a $400 device with tihs problem when the $200 one I was holding didn't have any problem like that.
I couldn't reproduce it on the galaxy tab in BB either, but the gray's on that screen appeared to be much darker overall. My guess is they're just using different screen batches or something. That's the problem with this stuff now a days, parts are sourced from all over made by different manufacturuers in different plants with different parts and so on. Too much variation.
So this is at least your third 7 Plus unit? What was the matter with each of the previous ones you purchased?
Also, where did you buy them from? And what part of the country? Might be your supplier who has defective bunches and I just want to be sure to avoid them.
I tried this multiple times and it never happened on mine. A P6210 with the latest firmware.

Ok. So I am not crazy and I confirmed with other people. But in the sun I can literally see the inside frame through the screen.
Spoke to att and going to replace it now.

Sure. In the extreme sunlight and for example I have a white background I can see the inside bezel all around the screen. It even takes a turn by the camera
I know it sounds weird but that's what happened..

I just posted about this earlier as well. I noticed the same thing today when I was out in direct sunlight for the first time.
went to the at&t store. And they though I was crazy and said I'll have to pay or restocking fee ect....
So I called at&t and they will be ship one tomorrow.
But now that you mentioned it too. I hope it's not a all units..

I ignored it to be honest... mine doesn't seem to have this issue. it's cloudy over here so I am not able to get sunlight at the moment but I put the phone under high flash light and ran a screen test I didn't see anything... I got mine from tmobile. I wounder if they use 2 kind of screen... Mine made in Vietnam and my Samsung phones always made in china...

You can't see it that way. You won't to be able to see it by manually setting your phone to full brightness and using a screen test app. You have to be in direct sunlight with autobrightness set. On the autobrightness setting the S6 has the capability to reach twice the brightness in direct sunlight versus manually setting it to the highest brightness setting. That is the only way your phone will reach the brightness it needs to see what the OP is talking about.
I can only see it this way. I'll be willing to bet that this is something that affects a LOT of S6s. However, I'm not too concerned about it. I probably access my phone in direct sunlight on a bright white background 0.1% of the time. And even then I'd have to look for it.
I think the uneven screen tone where some parts of the display is a bit more pinkish/purplish than the rest is a much bigger problem. It's far more visible against a white background at any brightness level. I know because my phone, which I had replaced because of this issue, still suffers from it slightly.
BTW, my S6 is also tmobile and made in Vietnam.
Seems like we all have the weird tint on whites but it's the luck of the draw on how severe it is. Mines very minimum and only noticeable if I look for it closely

I spoke to AT&T and they are shipping another unit. Not sure if it will be any better since alot of the folks are having the same issue.

*UPDATE*
After experimenting a little more, I called AT&T again to see if anyone else had been complaining about the issues. According to the service rep, there was no record of any calls besides mine. *ahem* They gave me the number for Samsung support whom I dutifully called.
After getting shunted around for a while, I got a level II tech who said that she had never heard of this issue nor could she advise me on it.
At this point, I still have a week left to exchange this unit for another phone free of penalty. I guess I'll give a final call to AT&T early next week and see if they have any more data. My gut tells me that this is just a design flaw on this generation of S6 phones and that I should just live with it.

Haven't tested to see if mine has the lines in direct sunlight but my phone certainly has the faint pink hue on one end of the screen which is noticible on white backgrounds.
I have had the s6 replaced three times and each one has the pink screen hue at one end of the screen.
I urge every s6 owner to load up a white wallpaper or background and see if your screen accurately produces white evenly on the display. I bet you it won't. And once you see it, you can't unseen it.

Red screen*
When I got this phone in my opinion it was clear whit but tgen when I tried reducing the red colour it became even more clearer, I don't know it's probably I didn't pay attention to the colour when I got this phone...
In my opinion the blue light filter messes up the display although I know this isn't the case..
I got a replacement new phone as I cracked the screen on my first one, and my new one, if anything is slightly cooler / bluer than I usually like, no red / pink issues I can see. My last one was ever so slightly reddish even with red slider down.
for me it is fixed after:
- specific sw update
- set adaptive display
- set display tone to cooler option (-1 or -2 from the slide bar in display settings)
Out of the box mine is fine. I swapped my first one that had a pinkish display even when red turned all the way down.

if i understand your question right then yes, there are devices without the ted tint issue!
I went into 4 shops and looked at 8 phones and everyone of them had the red /pink issue only 1 could you turn down red to reduce it in adaptive settings when it became blue/green white and all were red In photo and cinema settings
I bought my s8+ ten days ago, after two days I changed it because of pink borders... Before change, I powered on two new s8+, one were all red (not only borders), the other one was nearly perfect... But I had to choose another color (orchid gray) instead of my first black phone... It's a shame that we have to choose the phone from the color of display and not from the color of the phone...

My screen is pretty noticeably green-tinted, but it somehow gets corrected when sliding the cool / warm slider all the way to the right, making the display more warm. Even though the issue is too much green, making the display warmer seems to fix it somehow. I know that the issue is green, because sliding down the green slider under advanced options fixes it, while sliding down the blue or red one just makes it worse
And pro tip, you can combine the cool / warm slider with the advanced options RGB sliders, if the warm / cool slider isn't enough on its own. Perfect mix for me is the cool / warm slider all the way to the right, and green slider decreased by 1-2. You could fix a bright red display with the combination of the general slider and the RGB sliders
I'm still concerned that Samsung isn't taking this time to educate people of OLED calibration. They could put this entire thing to bed with just providing more than 2 marketing crafted sentences. Not one thing is wrong with the screen sans those with actual manufacturing issues of course. Microsoft takes their pixel sense displays, like apple and individually calibrates them. Its why you don't complain about color on iPhones and even surface PCs.
This has 0 to do with the display, the manufacturing process etc. It's just a step that Samsung and many other don't do to their phones. They take a lot # for screens produced, get them close to accurate, preprogram the variables for the entire lot and off ya go. The update is fine because all it does is give yu extended granular control over the calibrations. Once you set the point on all, you'll be fine.
Keep in mind that even if they were individually SRGB calibrated for perfect color space and white point, someone who find them to look off because as humans our perception of color varies tremendously. I hate overblown colors yet RGB 100% dead on is weak and dead to me.
Just use your settings to make your screen right for you. That's all. Don't yell at CS, don't sit in the store waiting for their next lot of phones. They will be variations of the same display with slightly more detailed calibrations. And you'll have wasted time waiting for something you can just do yourself with some patience and correct lighting.
Funny thing about red screen and pink tint. I have my s8 plus since a week. My device came with lots of red tint, then I got an update that really helped, but still wasn't perfect. After few days my screen lost pink/red tint without adjusting anything. Of course, little pink tint on the edges exist but it's due to screen specifics.

What your saying makes a lot of sense to me, maybe you can point me in the right direction here. I have the S8+ with a pink tinted screen and even pinker edges. Fortunately mine is consistent across the screen. I have 4 other Samsung phones and the Tab S 10.5, which all have great displays (at least to me they're all great). Every one has a slightly different white balance, but they're all nice. They also can be tilted at very strong angles and only have very minor tinting of the colors. Now, my S8+ has been updated and I've been able to get the edges to look great. I'm also able to get the main screen to a really nice white. Here's the two problems I'm running into that you might be able to help me learn how to fix and finish getting my phone to the quality I've grown to love with all of my other Samsung devices. If i adjust my whites in any giving environment, say inside, it looks wonderful, but as soon as I go elsewhere, like outside, or go from incandescent light to florescent, the whites will go to either redish again, or to a green/blueish. I've never had this on any of my other Samsung devices, I mean they do change from warm to cool depending on the environment I'm using them in, but they never look redish, or green/blueish like my S8+ does, they are warm or cool. That's what I'm trying to adjust my S8+ to do. I have all the great new tools that Samsung gave us in the latest update, but for some reason, I can't get it anywhere close to my other devices and have it stay that way when changing the lighting I'm in. The second problem I'm having is that if my phone isn't held almost perfectly straight on, it takes on a pink hue again. None of my other devices do this either. Now that seems like it might actually be a dud. Or try first calibration outside. This seems silly but are you using auto bright and adaptive display?

Ok, I will definitely try the calibration outside. I'm not sure I've tried it outside on a bright day yet. I am using the adaptive display setting and auto brightness, all of the other modes are quite pink and unusable, actually the tint is more of a magenta. I'm fairly certain its the adaptive display mode shifting my white balance in the various environments. Hopefully Samsung will somehow fix the other modes as well. The more I use my phone, the more I realize the biggest problem is the color shift that happens at angles. Almost any movement up, down, left, or right will produce a pink tint. If i go to an even stronger angle (around 75 degrees)the tint goes away. I can also get rid of it by turning both the red and blue down all the way and set the slider fully towards cool. The pink is gone when I do this, but then everything's really blue/green. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll definitely give it a try and let you know how it works.
I've tried calibrating my display outdoors, but the pink persists. I decided to send mine back to Samsung. They said they'll repair it lol. I'll just keep sending it in until it's right. I'm at Best Buy now to have Samsung flash my firmware like the factory asked, although it's not going to fix anything. I've looked at about ten various S8 phones on display and found only 2 with the problem, one of the was borderline ok, the other was just like mine. It's my first time seeing another S8, one that doesn't have the pink tint and it pretty much about took my breath away! The display was more beautiful than I had thought it would be. I just wish Samsung would simply make this right and swap out these faulty phones, heck I'd respect them for it. Having to jump through hoops on a brand new thousand dollar phone is ridiculous. I had debated about sending it in to Samsung, wondering if I was just being too picky. After seeing what the display is supposed to look like, there's no doubt in my mind that my display/phone/software, whatever, is defective. Grrrrrr

There is no chance I'd allow Samsung to "repair" my phone. This thing is brand new. You make them get you a BRAND NEW device out of a box you open in wherever you purchased it. Then you move forward in the store and check that display and all other fun things. Once satisfied, buy that unit. Why ever take a repair on something less than 1 month old. Have fun selling my OG unit as a refurb Sammy!

When on a solid screen, such as a blue-gray colored screen, it's especially noticeable. No banding, but it just gets gradually darker towards the USB end of the screen than the front facing camera end.
I'd like people to test theirs and see if they notice the same thing. I've had a Nexus 6 for over 2 years and just now noticed it has the same issue but it's brighter at the bottom, so it may be something you don't see unless you look for it. It's a very subtle difference. Maybe this is common with OLED phones?
The reason I ask is I just got the phone and have time to exchange it. If a lot of people see the same thing then I won't worry about it since I could get one that's even worse.

I would exchange it. When you pay this kind of money for a phone you expect it to be right. I use solid dark walls and haven't noticed that on mine.

Yeah I'm just worried I'd get a worse one but I guess it's worth a shot.

During normal use not so much.
Played the video on my 8+, even tried at different angles and it seemed like the same color no matter where I looked. Looks like you have a bad display, sorry bub.

It's not the color but the brightness. I'm exchanging it today and hoping I don't get another from the same batch.
Well I exchanged it and finally got one with a near-perfect screen. The woman at Best Buy customer service said they've had a lot of S8 returns for that reason so I guess it's just a crap shoot if you get a good one. I heard the same thing about the S6 and 7.

Horizontal lines across the entire display?

Anyone else experience anything like this? I've just started noticing that there are faint lines all up and down the screen. There doesn't appear to be a reason they show up, and they don't always stick around. In fact, they seem to fade in and out.
Once you notice them you can't un-see them though. I doubt this is something that would come across in a screenshot, but I will try to take a photo with another phone and post it.
Well I finally have some pictures to show what I'm seeing. Hopefully I'm not the only one?

Check that it's not just colour banding in your wallpaper.
Absolutely not just my wallpaper. I notice it most on my keyboard, but the lines are up and down the entire display regardless of what is on the screen.
Since I bought the phone from an eBay reseller in the US, I highly doubt they'll consider my warranty valid.
Hi, yes, I have the exact same thing happening. It started like half an hour ago, I've been on a walk, with a headphone plugged in for 2 hours. When I got home, I noticed the stripes especially on colors that are not entirely white, like the notification shade pulled down on a white background. Now it starts to fade away and is barely noticeable. Did it go away on your device, or it still persists? Did you do anything about it?
