Explain how my tablet is "running out of space"... - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So in the past week or so I've been getting this notification that I'm running out space in my tablet...except all of my videos, pics and music are on a micro sd. Tallied up all of my apps and have maybe around a gig of space used up according to what they use under app dev. This is quite honestly pi$$ing me off tremendously because I can't figure this out at all. I did fix permissions and wiped dalvik to no avail. Btw I'm rooted running AR HD 3.4.1. I just can't figure out how 13 gigs is being used up and why you can't move whatever is using this massive amount of space to the micro sd???

Did you look in /data/logs ?

What should I be looking for? The chive had an abundance of cached photos, got rod of them, fed up a few hundred megs... not gigs, it was probably the only app that i had that would have made a significant difference

Google play music nearly filled my tablet, and it wouldn't say what was using up the space.
I just flashed to stock and then realized it must have been google play music.

There can be a number of things causing it to run out of space. The most common nowadays is filling up system/app with updated youtube/google apps which are far larger than the originals. This is because it keeps the version that came with it + the updated version. Installing a newer version of ggapps should fix it

to make it easier on yourself instead of guessing and searching through folders with some weak browser app. use something like elixr2 or one of my favs Quick System info PRO. this makes looking things up fast and easy without having to terminal everything all the time. lots of options and gives even more info than what the pics show.

One other thing to keep in mind.
I used to have my tf101 make a nightly back up of the system using Titanium Backup. Forgetting about that, it chewed up space on my tab within a couple weeks. I finally figured out that it wasn't apps eating up my space but the back ups. So I limited the number of back ups to keep, and deleted the rest. POOF those pesky and pissy notifications went away and I have not had an issue of that since.

G2X Storage Issue

So, I just got my new G2X yesterday and loaded all the apps that I had on my MyTouch 4g before. Today I tried to download a 25MB app and my phone is already saying that there isn't enough storage space. When I check under storage it shows that I have 1.2 GB left on my internal storage. So if I have over a gig left why can't I download a 25MB app?
OK, so, come to find out that the Amazon market was able to DL apps perfectly fine so I uninstalled the Android Market updates and then it started working again. So, for what it's worth.

What would have been helpful was a better description of what you were doing, the full message you received.
The market downloads apps to a temporary cache before installing them. If you try to download many apps at the same time sometimes you will get the out of memory error. I got it on my Nexus One often. It has nothing to do with how much usable memory you actually have left. If you are downloading a large app download it alone and don't download any other apps at the same time.
Good advice. That's happened to me before.

Good call. I'll be sure to keep that in mind in the future. thanks.
Not to thread jack. where I'm having storage issues is the way it seems my SD card is being handled. For whatever reason my phone shows as having 3 storage locations SD card, Phone memory and Internal phone storage. The issue is that when using music players when picking a source it only lets me choose from either internal storage or external storage but the internal storage is the Internal phone storage and the external storage is the Phone memory. Leaving me without an option to choose the SD card. What's even more strange is that it does pull music from the SD card but now alot of the tags are messed up. All the tags are correct. I've doubled and tripled checked that. Leaves me scratching my head as to what is going on.

Makes sense. Do you know if this is adjustable? Noticed more and more storage issues with the new market.

Any idea how many apps is too many? I've had at least 15 or 16 apps downloading/updating at once on this phone and I never got an error.
On WI-FI I downloaded 10 at a time no problem. On phones data 5 no problems.

Memory issues?

Is anyone having trouble with pictures deleting or becoming unreadable?
I also had a app uninstall its self....
I have had 1 pic problem and a few SD card errors when I know I have 13gigs free. A retry on the download has helped with the app install though.
I downloaded camera zoom ex and when I take pics, usually the first file is unreadable. One recorded video did that as well. No issues with apps yet, lets hope it doesn't get worse.

I haven't had anything with pictures, but I have had the erroneous "not enough room" error and apps have become broken (cannot launch..) and require an uninstall/reinstall. When this happens, in the list of applications, they don't have the "nice" application name, they have the real? name such as net.hexage.radiant.hd
I had installed a circle battery mod widget from the market and when i went to take a screenshot i got a r/o error. But ever since uinstalling said app its been fine.

The attic is kind of weird when it comes to memory. Im thinking it mounts your external like internal and users the actual internal as internal. You have to get a third party file explorer to even see the internal memory. Kind of blows... But once you get used to it you work around it.

So one of my apps that mysteriously uninstalled itself (but the icon remained) decided to start working again (i never bothered to reinstall it and just left the icon, but then it started working again). Weird.
And yeah, even pictures i took that "stayed" are now corrupt. We have memory issues.

I've noticed that the first picture I take is corrupted, I just have to take multiple pictures and everything turns out fine. I downloaded camera zoom fx and its 10x better than the stock camera app.
Do you find less issues using that app? Can it use the stock camera button?

Loving this app, it has torch mode while taking pics... Helps the night shots a lot. Camera button works and it does a ton more than stock Moto cam app can do
Still having memory issues. Wouldnt save a single picture from my email or internet all day. "download unsuccessful" for web pics or "download failed" for email pics.
Pretty lame.
for those of you with issues, are you installing apps to sd card?
i'm thinking what it's doing is when you use apps2sd, it's mounts sdcard-ext as dynamic on the internal memory, but then redirects all sdcard items to sdcard-ext instead of /sdcard. ie apps2sd moves apps to /sdcard-ext and sizes that partition as needed (say 400mb apps, it sizes at 500mb). you take a pic, it goes to save it, but the system is now directing it to /sdcard-ext instead of /sdcard. it sees that there is only 500mb left and kicks it out or activates the low memory message.
if you're installing apps to the sdcard, turn off the phone, pull the microsd card out and pop it into your computer and see what's on it.
i also think that if you use a microsd card, you forfeit the entire 8gb internal storage.
then again, i could be wrong...
Ive been installing on the internal memory.
Thing is, some stuff saved on the memory card (ie from inet etc) will sometimes just become unreadable. This phone has some caching issues or something.
And judging by all the complaints etc, i doubt its a memory card issue.
ok, i removed my sdcard
storage still reads at 4.77GB internal
when i try to take a pic, it tells me to insert an sdcard.
8gb is a lot of space for apps lol 10k justin beiber fart soundboards
Jusy found this. I thik its basically saying the 8 gigs that are supposed to come built into the phone are already being used. Kinda dumb.... https://motorola-global-portal.cust...71812/~/internal-and-external-memory-(atrix-2)

do you realize how many "talking [insert something stupid here]" apps and "[insert infamous person here] fart sound board" apps there are available?
This damn memory bug is really bothering me... i couldnt save a picture from gmail today to save my life. Failed. Failed. Failed. Cannot load.
I guess i can try a class 4 memory card? I have a 6 now... and with class 10 being out there, seems stupid that this would have issues with anything at all, much less a 6.
Have you tried pulling out your card and reformatting it?
No... i guess i could. Would just be a bit of a pain transferring my 16gb to the PC and back again, but ill give it a shot.
But at the end of the day, the phone does have memory issues, that more than likely be solved with an update, so thats good.

Out of space

I am trying to install an app I downloaded from the web. Its the xperia album but every time I try to install it I get an out of space error but I don't have a lot of apps. So I go to the app store and try to dwnload angry birds b//c its a lot bigger than the album app and it allows me to dwnload it. Does anyone know what's going on.

Maybe I panic to easy and post to quick. I called and did a factory reset and everything is fine.

I was wondering why my internal storage was running out of room so I used Diskusage to see what was really going on. I found about 2Gb of junk in /system/media/ Since I wasn't doing a factory reset between flashes, every zip I installed and other useless app data remained. The weird thing is the folders weren't showing up with my root browser. for the factory reset in between flashes and also for Diskusage.

Sad thing is we shouldnt have to do a factory reset to clear up space on the phone. Last week before I bricked my phone I was simply listening to Amazon Cloud Player and it basically took up all the space on my phone. I was getting warnings for low space. And how am I supposed to clear that space? Thats how I bricked my phone by moving all my apps to my SD card with RootToolbox Pro. I think its clear we need a custom rom like CM 9 or 10 to get rid of the glitches in this phone. Please take the time to donate to guys like interloper and aaarrrgh just to show you care about their work.

Diskusage will allow you to find and delete the files in /system/media/ that might be taking up space. What I found there was mostly redundant zips and Rom Toolbox app backups. As far as I know, apps won't work on the external sd but that shouldn't be too much of a problem once you get that wasted space back,

[Q] Low Memory

I have recieved this P3113 GT2 8gb as a christmas present. I have rooted it and flashed a custom recovery but remained on official 4.0.4 firmware. When I was trying to install a few apps, a notification popped that I had low memory. My 4.59gb available space turned into 12mb in just 4 days and I haven't installed anything major except for a book reader and books totaling around 600mb.
Is there any fix to get those 4gigs back to usable memory?

Settings/storage, check your miscellaneous files and download files.... in fact anything that seems to have a high number next to it.
I got an 8gb version a month ago from Amazon, and i find i have to manage storage carefully. This is just one of a few things i do.
All my music is on Google play so i keep a cache and stream most of it. I have invested in a16gb memory SD, which helps as all my photos and videos go straight to my external SD.
I keep my books to a minimum only keeping the ones I'm reading on the device, and taking advantage of kindle and Google books cloud storage ( let's be honest, it takes only seconds to download books).
I also keep my apps reserved to the ones i use the most. They can always be downloaded again when you need them.
My office programs i have linked to dropbox, which upload when closed ( use that too for photos and videos.
I delete podcasts once listened to, and usually only stream these.
These few house keeping tips keep my device running smoothly and i have plenty of memory left.
Hope this helps
Have you tried moving anything over to internal? How big of external SD card do you have? If you have a large SD card, you can swap internal, and external. There is a post here in general that let's you do this. Wish I could be more helpful, maybe post a screenshot to show ur storage.

What you need is this app : folder size chart from the Play store.
Sort the directories by size and check whats eating your mb.
The folder youre looking is sdcard.
Regards.

[Q] Phone Storage Full... but WHY?

I recently received a phone storage full notification on my HTC One Mini, which surprised me because I don't have a ton of apps (mostly stock ones that came with the phone), and less than a gig of music, plus 3 gigs of photos/videos. I checked the "storage" calculator under settings and it showed the various categories that are taking up the most space (e.g. apps/music/photos/downloads/other). What I discovered was that "other" was consuming over 5 gigs of my storage space! I plugged my phone into the computer and started navigating through all the folders on the phone and can't seem to find the culprit.
What could it be?
I deleted all but my most important text messages (that barely made a dent in the storage), cleared my browser cache (still did very little), and now I don't know where else to look. Any suggestions/thoughts?
Use DiskUsage from playstore that will better show what the biggest users of space are.

Simply amazing! DiskUsage revealed that Google's Music Streaming App (All Access) is consuming nearly 5 gigs of my storage space! I don't download any of the songs I play, and yet they appear to be stored locally on my phone somehow. Is this how it's supposed to work or is something wrong? Does anything bad happen if I delete this stored data?
Inside of settings of Google music you can disable caching of music. If you delete the folder nothing bad will happen but it will fill up again unless disabled . Cache can also be cleared via app.
