First time rooting my HOX (ATT) and so far I've tried AOKP and MIUI....neither of them can get me where I want to be. the latest MIUI barely lets me get into the OS before a bunch of force closes. AOKP I can get in just fine, but I can't do much if I can't get to the play store.
Any assistance on these two?
And I guess you'll tell me to go to their respective forums for assistance? I figured I'd tie em in together.
Doing a clean install?
1.85 or 2.20?

Why can't you get into the play store with AOKP? Did you flash the latest gapps.zip after the Rom?
If you don't mind htc's sense skin I would recommend CleanROM, very stable and very good battery life without all of the ATT bloatware.

I did flash gapps, but MAYBE it's because it's ICS based that it isn't going? Because the AOKP I am running is JB.
And when you say CLEAN INSTALL, what exactly does that mean?
OK, I fixed AOKP, redownloaded it and works fine now. Must've been a bad checksum or something. I didn't have it do a check before. I am still getting a bunch of force closes though, but maybe that's the initial cobwebs that need to be shaken out?

By clean install they mean wipe everything (caches and system) before flashing.
Also, make sure you're using TWRP, not CWM, as your recovery, as the latter has been known to cause random problems on the One X.
Seconded CleanROM, definitely the most stable thing out there for me (if you don't mind sense).
Ok, I am using twrp. So I am good their. I'll go and look for the jb gapps as well. thanks.
OK, looks like a clean install is showing me some love now. Things are running like they should be, only I am getting an H instead of a 4G on the signal icon. but speeds are still ok. Any word on that?

Are you on AT&T? The AT&T icons essentially lied and always said you were getting 4G even though you might be on 3G / H. Most ROMs put a more honest icon there so it'll only read 4G if you're ACTUALLY on 4G.
If you're in a 4G area and think you should be getting 4G, that's a different issue

Do you have LTE in your area or only HSPA? I think the Sense ROMs show '4G' for both LTE and HSPA, AOSP ROMs show 'H' for HSPA.
After some reading and tinkering I got it right....finally. liking this AOKP ROM but its the only one other then MIUI that I've tried. Too much Chinese in miui for me to understand what's going on. Lol.
So can some one point me in the direction of a backup method for the HOX?

I've rooted and used custom roms on other devices in the past although I've left my Nexus stock and my OneX is currently stock. With this phone I am trying to figure out why I want to root? The phone runs great, I haven't had reboots or issues and battery life is great.
I don't care for custom roms because in my experience there's always minor things that don't quite work and stability can be so so.
Apart from custom roms any good reason to root this phone? With my Sensation I rooted right away but with the One X, there's nothing that I feel like needs to be addressed with root.

Bloatware removal, button remap, memory settings to alleviate multitasking woes, ad blocking, tethering, etc... Check out cleanROM SE. Very close to stock, every tweak you need, nothing you don't, just as stable as the stock ROM. My phone is exactly the way I want it now thanks to Scott and his awesome, awesome ROM.

Titanium Backup
Change fonts
tweaks like minfree manager to fix multitasking
look through this list https://play.google.com/store/search?q=Root&c=apps
reasons why i need root is removal of bloatware, tweaks, titanium backup, ad block, setcpu profiles and extra settings that devs put in their roms like eqs, button remaps, and wifi hotspot hack.
Can't wait till aokp or cm9 becomes stable. Gave aokp a try and that rom flies on this device.
Responses above pretty much covered it, as far as the benefits of root. But I have to disagree to some degree to the OPs comments on custom ROMs. It completely depends on the ROM and the developer. But my experience with custom ROMs, is that they can often be more stable than stock, and much better performance. Obviously, bugs need to be worked out early on, especially for ROMs that differ significantly from stock (like AOSP ROMs on HTC devices). But once the ROMs reach "maturity" they are often better than stock. And CleanROM is a good example of a ROM that is already stable, since it is mostly stock, but with lots of bloat removed, optimizations, and useful features.
That said, its only fairly recent where Android devices have high enough specs where performance isn't much of an issue on the stock ROM. Even with Sense, the One X is very smooth and responsive, and plenty of people will be just fine staying on the stock ROM. I am mostly on CleanROM due to the nice features like Advanced Power Menu, WiFi Hotspot, and button remap built-in.

Another thing you can do rooted is install the HTC apps that AT&T removed, including Flashlight and FM Radio.
I did it. Have root.
Any one have links to the button remap that's safe and works on 1.85? I want to do that the black bar with 3 dots drives me crazy.

Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
If you don't want to unlock the bootloader, you can still install the 3-dot menu mod. You'll need an app like Root Explorer or ES File Explorer (that lets you browse the system files). Unzip the file from the thread, copy to the appropriate places. You will need to mount the folder locations as R/W, and also make sure the permissions on each of the files you copy is right. Read through the thread for that mod for details.
I would recommend unlocking your bootloader and flashing a custom recovery, just so you won't lose root after the next OTA (I recommend TWRP, cwm seems a bit unstable and there are reports of sd wipes). In the dev forum there is a thread that steps you through keeping all of your settings, I would check that out

So I'm running on my TBolt [ROM] CM9 / LiquidSmooth / AOKP / Random ICS
htc_mecha-ics-eng.v1.5
and I'm unsure of how to tell what radio(s) I have running... But my data 4g/3g cuts in and out pretty frequently... I've searched for a remedy for it, but can't seem to find one.
Any help? Is it the Rom in general?
Any responses are appreciated,
again sorry if I've asked anything that's already been answered.

Any ICS ROM will have data issues to some extent. You need to flash a radio to your phone, which may help some... but still expect some drops of data. Before I recommend one, what are the numbers shown under your baseband info?

Not entirely true there. Santos ics sense based roms does not have this data dropping issue like the liquid/twisted roms do. His latest ics sense 4 Rom is spot on.
To the op the main reason why the aoap ics Rom has data drop issues is because there is no ril from HTC based for aosp. So liquid had to hack together a ril to work so in a nutshell that's the main reason why for the data drops. Even aosp gingerbread Rom has data drops some but no where as bad as ics versions.

For me I still get data drops on both of Santod's RoMs
When I loose data it is from being in an area with no signal, the phone will not reconnect to data even if I am in an area where i have full bars.
Again, this only happens if I am in an area that has data, then I move to an area that has no data, and back.... but they still do drop data.
Anybody found a way to get a JellyBean based ROM to connect to a 2wire router? I'm new to rooting and haven't gone through with it yet as this is a big deal for me. I'm looking for a JB rom that just works all around and is pretty stable. Customization isn't really important, I'll probably keep using Nova Launcher anyways. Being incompatible with a 2wire router seems to be the common problem on the JB roms I've read up on.

Well there is no best ROMs. It is all preference. Also, saying what is the best ROM is against the rules. I suggest looking in the development sections and scrolling thru. No one here is going to tell you what to flash. If you like viper just five it go. If you want clean ROM then flash it.

Viper is my favorite. But you have A LOT of options. It depends on if you like AOSP or sense. We have it all.

Actually, unless you're getting a phone that's already rooted, you don't need to worry about this for now, since there is no root for new phones on jelly bean.

Could be off of eBay or Craig's list. It may even have the 1.85 firmware. But if it is coming from AT&T, most likely it will have 3.18
