Benefits of root? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I've rooted and used custom roms on other devices in the past although I've left my Nexus stock and my OneX is currently stock. With this phone I am trying to figure out why I want to root? The phone runs great, I haven't had reboots or issues and battery life is great.
I don't care for custom roms because in my experience there's always minor things that don't quite work and stability can be so so.
Apart from custom roms any good reason to root this phone? With my Sensation I rooted right away but with the One X, there's nothing that I feel like needs to be addressed with root.

Bloatware removal, button remap, memory settings to alleviate multitasking woes, ad blocking, tethering, etc... Check out cleanROM SE. Very close to stock, every tweak you need, nothing you don't, just as stable as the stock ROM. My phone is exactly the way I want it now thanks to Scott and his awesome, awesome ROM.

Titanium Backup
Change fonts
tweaks like minfree manager to fix multitasking
look through this list https://play.google.com/store/search?q=Root&c=apps

reasons why i need root is removal of bloatware, tweaks, titanium backup, ad block, setcpu profiles and extra settings that devs put in their roms like eqs, button remaps, and wifi hotspot hack.
Can't wait till aokp or cm9 becomes stable. Gave aokp a try and that rom flies on this device.

Responses above pretty much covered it, as far as the benefits of root. But I have to disagree to some degree to the OPs comments on custom ROMs. It completely depends on the ROM and the developer. But my experience with custom ROMs, is that they can often be more stable than stock, and much better performance. Obviously, bugs need to be worked out early on, especially for ROMs that differ significantly from stock (like AOSP ROMs on HTC devices). But once the ROMs reach "maturity" they are often better than stock. And CleanROM is a good example of a ROM that is already stable, since it is mostly stock, but with lots of bloat removed, optimizations, and useful features.
That said, its only fairly recent where Android devices have high enough specs where performance isn't much of an issue on the stock ROM. Even with Sense, the One X is very smooth and responsive, and plenty of people will be just fine staying on the stock ROM. I am mostly on CleanROM due to the nice features like Advanced Power Menu, WiFi Hotspot, and button remap built-in.

Another thing you can do rooted is install the HTC apps that AT&T removed, including Flashlight and FM Radio.

I did it. Have root.
Any one have links to the button remap that's safe and works on 1.85? I want to do that the black bar with 3 dots drives me crazy.

The Cleanrom 3.0 SE does this. Just rooted last night and I'm loving it. Makes the xda app so much better

why don't you open the development section and take a look around?

Index where you can find most mods and other things:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
But here is direct link to removing the 3-dot bar and remap the buttons:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1645290
You will need to flash Clockwork or TWRP recovery. Or else unzip the contents and copy them into the system folders manually.

****. And unlocking boot loader means wiping phone. What a pain in the ass. Wish we could just get s-off so wouldn't have to do all this nonense. I'll just stick with root for now
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2

If you don't want to unlock the bootloader, you can still install the 3-dot menu mod. You'll need an app like Root Explorer or ES File Explorer (that lets you browse the system files). Unzip the file from the thread, copy to the appropriate places. You will need to mount the folder locations as R/W, and also make sure the permissions on each of the files you copy is right. Read through the thread for that mod for details.

I would recommend unlocking your bootloader and flashing a custom recovery, just so you won't lose root after the next OTA (I recommend TWRP, cwm seems a bit unstable and there are reports of sd wipes). In the dev forum there is a thread that steps you through keeping all of your settings, I would check that out

Why is unlocking the bootloader neccessary?

It seems like the bootloader being unlocked is the determining factor in development and implementation of roms/themes for this phone and I dont understand why. I know that unlocking the bootloader allows for some things like overclocking and other tweaks to be done that otherwise could not, but I dont understand why that effects the ability for us to get a working recovery and to be able to flash various mods, including roms and themes. My SE X10 didnt have a locked bootloader and I had xRecovery/WB v6.0 rom/Envy theme and various mods flashed to it just fine.
They ended up being able to unlock the bootloader but I never did it so my phone surely wasnt as fast as those with unlocked bootloader/custom kernel/oc but it was noticeably faster than it was stock so im wondering why we cant have the same on this phone? Aside from the part of not having a working recovery with which to flash them.

the x10 modding was very dirty to say the least. if you've ever had a g1 or nexus device, you would see how much easier and less potential for problems involved with an unlocked bootloader. the bootloader allows for custom kernels and radios to be installed easily.

Less potential for problems? Unlocking the bootloader was the only way I could brick the x10. With a locked bootloader I could do whatever I wanted without fear of bricking it. Saying the modding was dirty doesnt mean anything to me, please explain. I never had any issues with the mods on that phone, it was inredibly better after running Wolfbreaks rom, thats one of the 2 reasons I even kept that phone as long as I did. Im just trying to understand why we need our bootlocker unlocked to get a rom on it. The Bionic bootloader is still locked but they have roms for it. I just dont understand.

i mean less problems with a custom rom or problems for the devs trying to adapt to a non custom kernel. sure, unlocking the bootloader opens up the potential of bricking your device.

So its harder to dev a rom for a stock kernel than it is for a custom one? You wouldnt think that would be the case but then again Ive never developed anything so what do I know?

That's exactly what Wolfbreaks rom was, a debloated, tweaked version of the stock rom. Even that was noticeably better than stock so i'm wondering if we could at least get that. It would be better than nothing, right?
but its not like we really need a debloated version of the stock rom. the phone is already extremely fast and most of the bloatware that we have can be uninstalled so what is the point? to waste the developers time just to give us something that will pretty much be same thing just barely be faster?
One reason would be to OC. Would love to see how fast she performs OC to 1.2 plus I'd like to see CyanogenMod on top of ICS

That's pretty obvious seeing as how we can get rid of most of the bloat out of the box. That you would even think that's what i'm requesting somebody do is quite ridiculous, then to type it out and post it even more so.
Wolfbreak and many other devs who contributed tweaks/mods to comprise his rom did waaaay more than debloat, LMAO.
I don't think anyone can say how much faster/smoother the rom will or won't be compared to stock until the work gets done....Wolfbreaks rom made the X10 noticeably faster on locked bootloader, I can only imagine what he could accomplish on the Atrix 2. But i'm not trying to insist anyone do anything for this phone, I was just questioning why everyone seemed to feel we needed to unlock the bootloader before we could get custom roms on the phone. I was expecting to hear some technological explanation about how it's not possible to apply the changes needed with a custom rom due to certain necessary files being unaccessible due to the bootloader being locked. But it just seeems it's a choice being made by the devs who want the full on custom rom/kernel experience instead of at least taking baby steps and tweaking the stock rom to get the most out of it until the bootloader unlock becomes available.
I'm sure there is lots of performance that can be unleashed with the right mods to the stock rom.....but I guess that's kind of putting the carriage before the horse seeing as how we don't even have a way to flash it if someone did do something.

ya i am not trying to say you are wrong or anything. i probably just don't know because when i had my first android phone i rooted and went straight to cm6 at the time and it was extremely fast compared to stock. almost anything was faster than stock too. personally if i were to flash a different ROM i would go with something alittle different from stock. that is why i would root it in the first place. OC and other tweaks like signal dbm and battery percent in the status bar would help a lot too but i guess it takes them alittle time to do that. i am excited to be able to overclock though. seeing that the sg2 can overclock to 1.8 Ghz makes me jealous.

[ROM]-Stock 1.55.531.3 Rooted, Deodex -- REMOVED DUE TO KANG :O

KANG - To steal or a stolen code when referring to programming. Also can refer to leaked coding.
Due to the copious amounts of kanging that now happens in regards to android development I will be pulling all of my links and changing the original posts with this. If you would like to use my roms please feel free to find the kanged version elsewhere.
For inspiring developers, rtfm or ask someone who knows what they are doing before you steal someone elses work, look at someones code and get the general idea. If you port or use something as a base, credit that person. Do not just link back to the thread where you got it from. My email is [email protected] so feel free to ask questions, if I know the answers I will be willing to assist.
I don't wish to call anyone out but I will say there are a few roms, specifically for MT4G Slide that have been kanged. One of which was taken from me, another was a kanged version of CM7 which was just the Settings.apk SettingsProvider.apk and Launcher.apk replaced. CM7 is framework edits, not just a list of apps an entire team works on. You cannot just replace apps in CyanogenMod and expect it to work thus the reason some parts of the Settings.apk force close. Its not hard to be an idiot but its even easier to spot bull**** work, do yourselves a favor, leave xda, leave rootzwiki, leave whatever thread you are on and learn from people who know what the fk they're doing.
If my email fills with hate mail, then fine, at least what I did I feel was right and do not have to worry about my development being taken and rebadged, if I'm out of line then have a moderator delete and close my thread. Thanks!
Mainly because we are looking for s-off... Good work though

I know Daniel60104's ROM does have the unsecure boot.img, not sure on this one.
On a side note, has anyone tried flashing the radio update that accompanied this release? I know that radio is a no-go for older ROMS, but since it was designed with this release, no word yet how it works with a rooted ROM.
Anyone noticed battery life improvement on this stock version? I've been using this for a week now and I can say there's a big difference compare to the older version. I am using the non-debloat (stock). Another thing is I have yet to experience the random warm battery issue that I've been experiencing from older stock based roms.

I have noticed much better battery performance with this stock ROM, as well. I'm using Daniel's stock, rooted ROM, and I ran Bloater to take out the things I didn't want (like TMobileTV, TeleNAV, QIK). This ROM runs very quick, smooth. I'm still wondering about the newer radio, though I'm hesitant to flash it because I can't afford to screw up this phone. This is my ONLY phone, it has to work.

Given that I'm running 1.55.531.3, S-OFF and rooted, with the original stock radio, and everything is working splendidly (wi-fi, bluetooth, camera, gps, etc.), I'm not gonna mess with it for now.
I'm interested to see what HTC comes out with since they halted the 1.55.531.3 OTA update due to "performance issues". When they restart, I wonder if it will be a different version, for instance.

Well them performance issues can and will be addressed asap, its all about tweaking the ROM, we had major Sense reloads on the evo shift so we learned to allocate more memory here rather than there, and once a ROM was odexed/scripted/opted they flat out flew.
When it comes to the radio on my DoubleShot i will probably never change the radio cause if it aint broke dont fix it

Finally Rooted my Glacier!

Soo excited, i was afraid to do it for past few weeks, but finally decided to do it, lol had no prior experience on rooting and this was my first phone rooting EVER, but following guides helped me and downgraded, temp root, than perm rooted with S off , and finally a custom ROM without a problem in like 1 hour XD.
See pics below of my MT4G running the MIUI ROM.
So basically i was wondering what rom i should get(already bored of the MIUI XD), just give me some suggestions, and also what else can i do with perm root S-Off except for flashing roms and installed root only apps, is there anyways i can possibly change the Bootscreen where it says MyTouch 4g to something else? thanks
first off, congrats buddy, and welcome
personally i really like miui, the themeing and customization imo is one of the most powerful and best on a rom, and it's cm7 based, gotta love dat cm7

be careful with this part. If u brick your phone, and it doesnt have the original splash screen, you 99.99999% wont be able to get a warranty replacement if u turn it on and it gets stuck on the splash screen saying anything but the official logo. I love customizing, but after bricking my last phone just by taking the battery out, I've chosen not to take risks like that. thats the only thing im keeping the same.

Facial recognition does not work in IceColdInsomnia 6.2.1. A planned update will include that feature (read the OP, it's all in there). If you're dying to try out face recognition unlock, give Zip's Creamed Glacier a shot. However, his version is completely stock (AOSP) whereas IceColdInsomnia is AOKP, meaning it has been modified with tweaks and customizations, the most significant which is ROM Control. It basically gives you a few more options in the settings to tweak to your liking; it also includes the option to skip tracks by long-pressing the volume buttons while the screen is off. That is one feature I cannot live without...
Anyways, yes, you wipe everything and flash it. You can disregard the kernel posted at the link because one is already included in the ROM.
check out "Zips Creamed Glacier"

the most well rounded ICS Rom in my opinion is "Zips Creamed Glacier"
*usb works
*facial recognition works
*low mic issue has been resolved.
*both cameras are working
i've been using it for the past three days and i don't have anything negative to say. check it out im pretty sure u guys won't be disappointed.
Personally I believe this ROM is the best:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1563576
It combines the two best ICS ROMs together, forming the most optimal one for now. Too bad the download has been taken down for the time of being.
I finally talked my wife into letting me root her mt4g. I jumped into mine too fast and had issues. Actually I had my bootloader unlocked by htc, and it took me many tries to reverse the damage of HTC method, but i finally got mine right. But today, from the time i pryed it outta her hand til i finished, took me about 10 to 15 minutes, since i have all the files in the right places. Im pretty good now, but i was just ignorant a few weeks ago! I enjoyed doing hers. But she didnt want ics yet, so i put Darkside Sense 4 on hers for now. I am waiting just a tad bit longer, the I'm gonna move on to ics...

I am currently running Zips Creamed Glacier 3.11. Its awesome apart from a few small issues. But Zips has promised to resolve them and bring in some more awesome goodies. Can't wait. You should give this ROM a try.
yeh ive been tring to download it but the links say : "taken down for the time being..."
I want to try it though =/

Soo excited, i was afraid to do it for past few weeks, but finally decided to do it, lol had no prior experience on rooting and this was my first phone rooting EVER, but following guides helped me and downgraded, temp root, than perm rooted with S off , and finally a custom ROM without a problem in like 1 hour XD.
See pics below of my MT4G running the MIUI ROM.
So basically i was wondering what rom i should get(already bored of the MIUI XD), just give me some suggestions, and also what else can i do with perm root S-Off except for flashing roms and installed root only apps, is there anyways i can possibly change the Bootscreen where it says MyTouch 4g to something else? thanks

CWM-flashable roms from the One X

Now that we have an unlocked bootloader and working recovery, has anyone successfully ported any of the roms from the international htc one x (tegra 3)? Feel free to post which rom you used and how it worked out for you.
DO NOT TRY AND FLASH THE BOOT.IMG FROM THE INTERNATIONAL HTC ONE X ROM. MAY RESULT IN SOFTBRICK
wrong section buddy
Yeah and I know no one is gonna read the general q&a. Besides we are all wanting immediate rom goodness

I'm reading it and it says has anyone flashed, not ported. Lol
lol just make a backup in cwm. worst case scenario you have to restore like I did. Won't hurt to try.

People read Q&A all the time. This is no reason to ignore the rules and clog up Development with random questions.

So now i have an unlocked bootloader and i have CWM installed. If i were to use a RUU, the clean rom DE, would it remove CWM and put the stock one back on? Or would it leave CWM intact?

When you start calling people names, you are the one that appears immature and childish, no matter how correct you may be.
The problem is, though, you are not correct. Maybe it only appears as a "simple" mistake to you, probably because you don't care or haven't spent enough time in the forums, but for people who frequent XDA then it has become a cumulative nuisance.
Also, when the majority of users responding in the thread you started is either questioning the logic of your statement or placement of the thread then maybe you need to reflect on what you were trying to accomplish and maybe take into consideration how you can achieve better results in the future. Long story short, try to learn from your mistakes.
Okay, so, International One x won't be compatible because of hardware differences, but what about the One S roms? I just tried flashing the CM9 port for the S, and it flashed successfully but upon reboot the screen was just filled with green graphical glitches. Rebooting back into recovery and attempting to restore my backup of the stock system didn't work at all, so RUU for me... but, why wouldn't a One S ROM work? It has 99% of the same hardware... besides the qHD screen. I remember being able to flash a Droid 3 ROM to my bootloader-locked Atrix 2 and it booting up just fine. What's different here?

LTE radio for one. Probably some other minor differences too.

[Q] why root? flash?

i am new to the one s but not to flashing. i am coming from a galaxy s sprint epic. while i was on that, cm10.1 & 10.2 were great advancements to the stock gb which always seems to take forever for updates. but with this huge leap in smartphone power, do i really need to root & flash? even with all the bloatware that i don't use, the phone is very fast. and i can get two days easily from my battery (which i charge every night so that's not an issue). i used to flash just to have the latest but i think i just want functionality. also, i don't put that much on my phone so 16g should be plenty, even with all the bloatware. not that i wouldn't flash to get better use out of my device but i just don't think i need to. please convince my otherwise.
Root just to try new roms or mods that improve your experience. Otherwise no need

The stock experience is great IMO. Only point in rooting is to remove bloatware

You joined in 2008 and still posted in wrong section
You have flashed roms before and still curious to the benefits of rooting
No disrespect--just a thread you would expect a new member/user to start
Either way, Happy New Year to you and all--

Once youve been rooted, you cant be without root, regardless of ROM.
There are plenty of benefits in rooting even on stock roms.
Infact, a non-rooted device is like a windows PC with only access to your desktop...

explain why?
why?
i guess i wasn't clear. i know the benefits of root. i've been flashing roms on my last 3 devices. the answers i was trying get were more along the lines of what are the main changes people are making to their stock phones. does all the bloatware inhibit speed or limit space? are there roms or tweeks that people can't live without? or do people unlock, root and flash just because they like to mess with their phones/have the latest even if it doesn't work correctly?

No, it is in General--It's all good--
When I get my Note 2/3 I will probably only root for Nandroids and Titanium BackUp. I think that phone and maybe SGSIV may stand on their own without a need to flash roms. Might be wrong though-- There are still more sweets after Jelly Beans--
Your last question answered your own question. Today's smartphones don't really require root, UNLESS you like tweaking your phone.....which most of us love to do, otherwise we wouldn't be here. You can easily get rid of bloatware with a new launcher. IE: Nova or Apex are my favorites. Just disable and hide them, you'll never see them again. Back in the day people rooted mainly to get the latest OS quicker....these days the newer smartphones already come with the latest OS, so it's all a matter of whether you like tweaking your phone or not. There are still great benefits to rooting, but these days it's more personal preference over flashing the latest OS.
Just my 2 cents.

I can explain it in one word: Control.
I want to be in charge of the device, not letting the device be in charge of me. If you want that you might as well go with apple, who makes good devices with a terrible OS, imo.
Well I will root my htc one s because the latest update to 4.1 is crap. My battery drains so fast. So if I don't find a solution for this I might downgrade back to ics 4.04 or maybe a better custom rom...otherwise I would've kept the rom not rooted. Especialy because now we can disable an app that it is not usefull.

Can't comment on stock but Blackout rom has been good for me.
I root because you can never seem to turn the screen brightness down far enough without root access, that and I don't like being locked out of a file system by manufacturers who don't trust my common sense.
I flash only when a device is older and/or no longer getting updated and something like CM gives me a major improvement.
Even if you want to run a stock ROM, unlocking/rooting (and flashing a custom recovery) enables you to make and restore nandroid backups and use tools like Titanium. It's also makes it easier to repair if you ever run into trouble like boot loops.
