In my opinion the best rom I have used and still use is Aeon v1.4L or whatevver the newest one. Its still gingerbread but stable and gives me fast service speeds.
On gingerbread: miuiscotland_I997-2.4.17
On ICS: RemICS-UX
On JB: RemICS-JB or CM10
In my opinion:
For GB: ZEUS 6.0 or Aeon 1.4SL
For ICS: Uni-yuma-Porn B.40
And for JB: ParanoidAndroid
Hope this helps

GB. Stock rooted. Sorry to admit it but I had battery or lag issues with most of the others I tried.
ICS. Cm9- although its the only one I stuck with for more than a few days.
Job. Tried cm10 and paranoid android. I liked cm10 better. All the extras inPA weren't much use to me. GPS doesn't work well in any jb Roms though so I'm back on cm.
catyrom works pretty good. its GB with an ICS look.
paranoid android was good for me in both ICS and JB, however i have been running the Cypher ROM for the last 4-5 weeks and that is the longest i have been on one ROM in quite a while.
Zues has always been strong for GB too.
CM10 rocks
I have never tried any other than stock ROM until I saw JB released. I realized that I should have this on my Infuse.
I tried cypherROM, CM10 and ParanoidAndroid. To me I felt that PA and CM10 are almost same, but felt CM10 is faster(though they use same source).
cypherROM is different UI feel and I personally like it better than CM10 in terms of it's UI colors.
I've found that I simply hate ICS and JB. As far as I'm concerned, the "best" ROMs are either a rooted and slightly customized stock UCLB3, or CM7.2.

Scott's CM10. Use FasterGPS, and change your GPS settings according to instructions in the thread. The initial lock will take a while, but after you get the first lock, it's within a matter of seconds that I can lock onto 7 satellites within SECONDS inside work, (which is an all metal building that is an auto dealer). I don't know about Bluetooth, since I don't use that function, but I have no issues with the camera at all, or internet speeds. I am extremely happy with CM10, and the ability to overclock easily.

I havent messed with any kernels. But for roms i would suggest sky ice cream sandwich or nexus. I was running sky ice cream sandwich but just switched to nexus.
Using sky ice cream sandwich its the beast using it since last 6 weeks. Trying faux kernel pretty quick though even stock kernel of sky ice cream is good.

Sky ICS has been my favorite with stock kernel
IMHO root, CWM backup, then cleanup and tweak stock while you wait for an ICS rom.
skyrocketeer was my first custom ROM and i love the look/feel/stability of it. very ICS-like. but it seems as if the dev has discontinued support so... i'm thinking of trying sky icecream sandwich..
just using a stock-ish, non-OC'd, BLN-modded kernel for now til all the kinks of OC/UV get worked out from others i've seen..
ICS "Themed" ROM is just that a theme.
I hope to see a real ICS ROM soon but until then I can not say I read that any ROM has have no problems.
Cyanogen --- FTW
Cyanogen is king!!!! I have it on my phone right now, and even thought it's
touted as an "Alpha". It's been stable enough for daily usage!
Quickwiz with faux's kernel is insanely fast , stable and smooth. Benchmark scores are also pretty high

I don't mind sharing my experiences. I've tried AOKP milestone 6, CM10 stable, PACman v18 AIO, and I'm Bout to try slimbean. Never flashed any custom kernels or radios (just ROMs and their baked in goodies). As far as AOKP goes, probably my favorite setup, UI, and functionality, but the damn thing lost mobile data after 24 hours and I had to restore a CM backup to get data back. As far as CM10 goes I love it a lot, in fact its worked the best, and my only complaint is the CRT off animation only working every 6th time (unless WiFi is on). Otherwise its been the most reliable and the most persistent on my phone. Lastly pacman v18 was pretty cool, like the integration of the different ROMs, but sometimes settings seemed to clash, and finding some settings were difficult (multiple ROM control menus) but it worked really well. Only problem I had was installing tweak box to get my CRT. That caused a never ending boot ani. Back to CM10 it was lol. Would love to hear some stories on kernels and radios, those intimidate me more than flashing ROMs. Oh BTW using twrp2 for recovery

I am running ICS (AOKP?) on my G2x, and have installed many apps. Recently I noticed that the phone kind of runs slow - sometimes laggy when I open such as apps as pandora and google docs, etc. That makes me wonder if I should look for a faster ROM. Which one is the fasted? ICS is generally more resource hungry? or Gingerbread could be lighter and faster generally speaking?
Go with an OC/UV kernel instead. You can try faux049b5 or morfics or harsh 1904 or 1504 with OC. They are all good in their own sense.
The respective links of the kernels are in the development section.

Well, there's a few things we need to know. Who's ROM are you using? EaglesBlood, Hellfire, CM9, Team Kangs? And what kernel are you running? The stock included in the ROM or did you flash a different one?
I'm using EaglesBlood ICS 4.0.3 with stock Faux Kernel. I didn't have that issue. That's one recommendation. Depending on which one your using will depend in other recommendations. If you decide you use AOSP (MIUI) instead I recommend Stormaggedon's ROM's. MIUI.us kept giving me force crash errors for force crash errors for a force crash error for reporting the force crash on start up. Didn't matter how long it sat nor how many times I restarted it.
Try EaglesBlood first. I'm about to clash Hellfire ICS with the harsh kernel. I'll let you know how that runs.
Edit: HellFire ICS with Harsh Kernel works nice. Its smooth, no lag, oh and in the developers settings have kill all apps when you leave them. Try that as well.

Pretty much all the roms are fast on here. Its what you use your phone for and install on it that eventually start slowing it down.
I know I personally favor the hellfire phoenix rom, but asking or saying which rom is the best/fastest is kinda ignorant as they all are the best for their own reasons.

Go with any GB rom (CM7.2 RC1 for me with Faux kernel), they are much smoother and faster than ICS roms currently are. I have tried every ICS rom (even with harshs latest kernels as of yesterday) and while they have made great strides I find CM7.2 RC1 to still be much smoother and faster (especially under heavy usage).

I used to run CM7 and CM9 on my i9023 nexus s.. and I found CM7 to be really unstable. I switched to a CM9 nightly and it was a godsend.. smoother, more attractive and 10x more stable! but I found it sort of "slowed down" after about 3 months.. just a circumstantial observation though, didn't do any tests.
I'm hooking up my friends with a couple of Nexus S's shortly because they need phones. I'm thinking of giving them CM9, rather than 10, for better battery life. But I'm guessing CM9 is susceptible to the SMS remote wipe hack? haven't tested it.
Personally I never liked cyanogenmod up until 9.0 , I'm on cm9 right now but it random reboot & hangs :/ cm10 seems pointless to me.

true dat. I remember when AOKP came out with their first JB rom, it was so unstable; rebooted my phone every 10 mins and I flashed cm10 and was happy for a while but it then started to do the same thing. Then i went to paranoid and it was even worse; so i went back to cm10. and then AOKP JB build came out and i was skeptical about getting it because of my first experience with them but I gave it a try and I have been flashing AOKP all the way up to build 4 and let me tell you; BEST ****ING ROM ON JB right now. Thing is, every rom is fast and smooth right after you flash it. In order to talk so good about one, I'd say you need to keep it for, at least, 3 months. If it's still stable and fast, with no wipes needed, no daily reboots, I'd believe you.

If you want a stable AOSP ROM that doesn't have much bugs you would have to go to late versions such as Milestone 1 release of AOKP, but if you want a TouchWiz ROM with a 4.2 AOSP feel HellsROM (recent development so will have a few bugs) would be perfect.

The newest version of cleanrom is my personal favorite. Its very fast, clean, lite, and super stable. I don't have a single issue with anything on this rom. Its updated every now and then but not to fix issues because there are none, but to make it even better by removing more crap from the system to make battery life even better. I've tried a bunch of roms and I get better battery life, faster and smoother performance, perfect stability, and overall happiness with this rom than anything else that I've tried. Along with the k3 modem and rpm its perfect. I got 1 day and 4.5 hours off a single charge before I got to 10% battery with medium use (using my phone as I normally would, without purposefully letting it standby to save battery). If I had to pay $50 to have this rom, I'd do it. Flash it and give it a couple days and you'll see why.
