[Q] Nexus S completely lifeless - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have Nexus S GT-i9023, not rooted, running Jelly Bean 4.1.1 for more than 1-month now.
Today I was uninstalling un wanted apps and the phone slowed up. The un-installation was killed due to no response.
Meanwhile I had an incoming call, I attended and while attending the phone just went dead. Completely dead.
I have tried charging through computer USB and wall charger, tried taking the battery out, battery in, with charger attached, without charger attached, through computer USB, through wall charger, pressed power button+ volume down button. Nothing seems to work.
The phone won't even vibrate when power button pressed. It's completely lifeless.
It has been working perfectly since 8 months, no problems at all.
Any help please? so in love with my Nexus S

Many dead Nexus S's since JB. Send it back for warranty repair.
I sent mine and got it back after 1 month. Mainboard replaced.

Thank you for the response.
Is this the end of story?
As in, no other possibility or maybe some OS related issue I can look into?
Thank you.

[Q] Triumph suddenly dead!

A few hours ago my girlfriend was just looking at her Triumph (was watching for messages so she wasn't actually doing anything on it) when the screen turned off. Now it wont turn back on. Have tried the power button, turning on the bootloader, and removing the battery for 5 minutes. No matter what we can't get the phone to turn back on. Any ideas on what has just happened? The phone is rooted with gingerbreak with titanium backup installed. That's it. We got the phone at Best Buy and this is our second phone. We're probably past our 30 days so this kind of bugs me! Any idea what we can do from here? Any other tricks to try?
As a quick update, Best Buy tells me that an Exchange counts as an original transaction. So I'm only 17 days into my "new" transaction. I can't believe neither of these Triumphs have lasted more than three weeks :\
Did you have it connected to the charger while using it? I have noticed it gets very hot even without the charger being plugged in. It may have over heated. Just a thought. Good luck. Let us know what happens.

No, the charger wasn't connected at the time. It was just sitting there with the screen on. The Significant Other wonder why it wouldn't turn off so she hit the power button and it didn't do anything. Finally the screen just went black but the backlight was still obviously on so she pulled the battery and put it back in. From there, she pushed the power button and the virgin mobile logo came on and nothing else. She had to remove the battery again. She put the battery back in once more and was able to get the Virgin mobile logo one more time. It froze after the logo and she pulled the battery one more time. After that the phone refused to turn on at all. When connected to the charger it doesn't do anything. Still completely lights out on the phone.
Man that sucks. I hope your able to find a fix.

Same thing happened to me the other day. I let my Triumph lose all its battery to charge it back up 100% (performing a full battery charge cycle), and it will no longer turn on. even when I have it plugged in the red light indicator will not light up most of the time.
Funny thing is, this is also my second exchange from best buy and luckily im still within 30 days and i have a replacement plan. I really suggest getting the replacement plan (its $30, good for a $300 phone), because unlike best buys other mobile protection plans, you dont pay monthly, you're covered for 2 years, and if you get tired of getting the same phone, they will give you a $300 store credit card.
You know my phone did something similar, my phone died and when i went to plug up the charger i got nothing. I think there might be something wrong with the charging ports on these phones, try wiggling the charger while its plugged in, thats what i did and it finally took a charge

upon closer inspection of the charging port, i noticed the female micro usb port was actually pushed further inside, thus preventing most chargers to work. I found a rocketfish charging adapter from best buy that seems to work perfect while my other cable didnt work at all.
As an update, we went back to best buy and sure enough they count the exchange as a new transaction, so I was only 17 days into my second transaction. They exchanged me another phone on the spot and so now we're on the third triumph. GPS checked out ok and the MEID was the correct length. The screen is the worst of the 3 (some pretty bad backlight bleed out onto the screen itself from the sides). I was picky about it but the gf isn't since you can't even see it unless the screen is completely black. So we'll see how this one holds out!
My guess is as was assumed, the battery wasn't getting charged. When the battery was removed for 30 minutes or more we were able to get the logo to show up and nothing more. My guess was the charger wasn't making contact anymore. We wouldn't want to keep a phone like that anyways but it seems like this might be a problem for these phones.
Every once in awhile mine will not power back on. It happened to me a couple of times shortly after I bought the phone.
I tried pulling the battery a couple of times and powering back up, no go.
What worked... remove battery, press power button for a couple of secs, replace battery, power back up. Has worked every time... so far.
My guess is need to drain some capacitors or that I had invoked part of boot recovery sequence without finishing?

Have you noticed the "I just broke my Triumph's Screen"- post? We'll If you saw my cracked Triumph, well that's another issue that I just discovered. The battery drained all the way and now it will not take a charge anymore. This is the exact same problem OP is having. Regarding this issue I will open up my phone sooner or later when I get a new one and take pics. I don't mind seeing wth is in there, maybe everything's held up by Elmer's glue lol. I'll make sure to let everyone know hopefully I'll do this within a couple days.
It seems like dead
If Motorola and VMUSA are not serious about resolving issues for Triumph then this phone will be dead anyways - customers won't be buying those. The number of returns are far more than new purchase. It seems like Motorola stopped manufacturing these.
So this phone will either get Ice Cream Sandwich update or it is end of life for this phone.

Nexus S wont turn on or charge

Yesterday I got used Nexus S in a mint condition, while putting my contacs from the other phone on a SIM card I tried to turn on nexus to see what contacs do I miss. So Nexus S started to boot and suddenly shutted down, after I could not do anything with it, it wont turn on, charge via usb or charger, tried also with volume and power on button and it doesnt help.
Have anybody any idea what could I do? I live in croatia, and the phone is from canada (model I9020) so I have no warranty.. I guess (and wish) that it could be a battery problem but I am not sure.
same problem with me..no respond whatsoever, tried to plug it in with AC and USB but just wouldnt turn on. but the phone get very warm if i leave it plugged in..gonna send it to samsung tomorrow :S dont know if they will be able to fix it

Jep, same with me, if I leave it plugged it gets very warm, but still does not give any indications of "life"....
Weird, I have been facing the same issue from yesterday.. The phone gets very warm on charging but show no sign of life otherwise.
Did you find a solution to this?
Mine also got it yesterday... Maybe its a conspiracy

I had the same issue with my Nexus S i9023 shortly after the OTA to Jelly Bean. I got the main board replaced under warranty. It took nearly 3 weeks due to lack of parts availability here in Australia.

man just the the same situation i was in.....why don't you try this...works out for me...and i guess for my other friends too...
So I had since gotten this fixed with help from a friend.
Solution for when your power button does not work: take the battery out of the phone. plug it into your USB (without battery) you will hear computer beeping. Put the battery back into your phone.
Hope this works for you as well as it did for me as this had my device up and running right away. Have not had this issue since. Crossing fingers.

I don't understand how the computer can beep when the phone is attached without a battery. It doesn't work for me. I'm taking mine to the service centre.. hope it doesn't cost me a bomb!

[Q] Dead S3?

Hi all,
I went to take my break at work, phone in hand, working, put it in my pocket. Signed out, proceeded to the elevators to go downstairs, take it back out and no response. Okay. Fine. Hold power...nothing. Pop the battery out for 30ish seconds, back in, case on...power...still nothing. Get to my car thinking maybe it died even though it had 50% left to the battery. Plug it into my car mount and the LED doesn't light up. I work minutes away from a Verizon store so I decide to stop by. I explain to the rep what was going on, he plugs it in and nothing. He tries a different battery and nothing. We both tried vol up + power + home and nothing.
I have not rooted my phone, and the only thing I did recently was factory reset it over the weekend just to give it a "fresh start."
After I got home not too long ago, plugged the phone in using the cable I usually take with me (just happened to leave it home today of course) and no response from the phone. However, if I remove the back cover and take the battery out the LED light DOES come on if I plug the phone in again for several minutes and then it goes out.
From what I've read here and elsewhere there was something about a bad EMMC chip that caused phones to just suddenly die, could this possibly be it?
Thanks.
Sounds like a hard brick to me. Try this

If ur not rooted wat so ever then jst get a warranty replacement
If you don't have the ability to software flash it or if you honestly think its a hardware issue you could try getting a warranty replacement through your carrier as suggested or if you'd like to keep your phone and not get a refurb and are willing to wait a couple weeks, you could always send it to Samsung for warranty repair.
Feel free to pm me if you wanna troubleshoot

Woke up to a dead i727

Hi Guys,
I need thought my own Sky would give me problems since i take care of it so well :crying:
So last night i put the phone on my night table to charge, it had 9% battery left and the phone beeped since i plugged the charger and it was charging, now in the morning when i realize i'm late for work, i went to check my phone and it was dead(no alarm this morning). It was all plugged in still the charger and battery. Now i got to work and a work partner has a Sky too, i tested his battery on my Sky and nothing, tested my battery on his Sky and worked so my battery is fine(it was 100%), i tested my charger on his Sky and charged, i tested his charger on mine and nothing.
Tried plugging the phone with only usb cable to the pc without battery to reach download mode or recovery but nothing.
Now since our batteries are fine and chargers, im assuming my motherboard died which i was thinking if the battery would work it was going to be the charging port.
Is there a way to test each part of the phone o be more accurate about this issue?
Thanks in advance.
Can you get into download, recovery? Any vibration on long press power button? What rom was it on.. How long? Etc. Need a bit more info.

The phone won't do anything at all, i have fixed Sky's power button before and this is really weird. Stock Rom/Kernel, it was Android 4.1.2 and i have it for like 1year and 6 months.
If you need anything else let me know.
One more thing that could help, lately i noticed that the phone wasn't charging as fast as usual.I installed the Skyrocket charging app and when i plugged the charger to the phone it would say Fast Charge A/C 900~ mA and after like 30 seconds it would go down to 800, 700, 600 and then say Charger Wakelock 500~ mA.
Im really starting to think my board died.
Dead board. It happened to me on another Samsung phone a few weeks go. Came home from a day of fun. Put phone on table and plugged it in. Went to bed. Woke up to a completely non responsive phone. Got a new battery just in case. Still nothing. It was a great phone too. Oh well at least it died in it's sleep. lol
it happened to my sons s2 i9100, went to charge it and when he went back to it and it was dead, got it repaired under ext. warranty but cant find invoice on what they fixed if they even stated what they fixed, my guess mobo

OH Jesus Christ, i'll try to get a new mobo then and update this.
And i'll lose all my data and will have to restore a Kies Backup from May-2013. Great!:highfive::victory: :crying:
Had this happen once or twice. It turned out that the usb port on the bottom of the phone had some junk that accumulated in there as well as some signs of minor corrosion, and was not making a good connection anymore. It just needed to be cleaned out. First, I think I just (very carefully) used a needle or safety pin or something like that to gently extract the lint/dust/crap out of the port, and then cleaned up the metal connectors in the port, and one of the back inside corners where I saw a little bit of green/white build up, with a little bit of isopropyl alcohol. I let it sit for a little bit to make sure it was dry and when I plugged it in, it started charging again. I happened to have an Optivisor lying around which made it a bit easier to see what I was doing, but it isn't necessary. The most annoying part was getting a small, focused beam of light from a flashlight into the port at just the right angle, and then figuring out how to keep it there while I worked. Shouldn't take long, and as long as you don't do something really dumb, it can't hurt to give it a try.
Except that he ruled that out by swapping batteries with his friends phone.

[Q] Nexus 5 suddenly shut down and doesn't start again

So i've had my Nexus 5 since Christmas 2013 and it used to work very well.
Today, about half an hour after i took it out of the charger i realized that it had shut itself down, so i tried to start it again without any success. My phone was stable and had an uptime of 1 week before this, so i was very surprised that it was off. It hasn't suddenly shutdown or rebooted like this before.
I tried to turn it on with holding down the volume keys too, but without any success.
My Qi charger beeps like usual when i put it on so the battery is working atleast, what could've possibly have happened? Broken eMMC? Motherboard shortage? i have absolutely no idea. The USB hasn't worked for a while, but i have been using wireless adb and qi charging instead.
It has currently been on the charger for an hour now and still not starting when holding down power+both volume buttons. The phone is totally dead, no google logo from the bootloader or anything.
The only recent thing i did before it shutdown was installing the bitcoin wallet for coinbase app and the bitcoin checker app, but that shouldn't be able to break my phone.
It is rooted and was running 5.0.0 with hybrid kernel and multirom if that helps.
Any ideas?
Call yourself and see if it rings. Could be the flex cable is bad. If it's giving you the charging sound it indicates the phone is on.

I have actually changed the flex cable once a few months ago.
I also have a PIN for my simcard on my phone everytime it starts so that wouldn't work to call it, but it should still vibrate when you turn on the phone which it doesn't.
My N5 did same thing while browsing web. It was under warranty, so I sent it for repair and motherboard was replaced.

Can't do that since i bought it in the US and live in sweden.
Costs 100$ more here and it wasn't release here until march so didn't have a choice back then.
A motherboard replacement seems to cost almost as much as the phone itself though.
