I have the stock T-Mobile simply rooted.
What is the best procedure for me to retain root once ICS drops AND be able to use titanium to restore all my apps and settings?
Eg
If I download ICS, I will lose root but retain my apps and settings.
When ICS is eventually rooted I can then root my Nexus S but that wipes all my data. I won't be able to backup first, because that required the root I lost when I updated a while before. Assuming a week or month until root is released, this means my pre update backup will be outdated.
So should I wait until a root is discovered before even accepting the OTA update? Then I can backup, update, root, restore, all in one day?
Or will there be a root that doesn't wipe the device?
Any better ideas? Thanks!

Wait for a stock rooted ROM..

Then just flash it and I will keep all my settings and apps?
No, if you flash a new rom, you will have to use Titanium to restore app and data. As far as settings, I think you'll have to reset.
How come? Flashing an updated ROM OTA doesn't usually wipe apps and settings. Why would flashing a stock rooted ROM to an already rooted device behave differently and wipe them?

Because while an ota is built to deliberately avoid a wipe, most roms require a good old wipe to run well because ur coming off a possibly very different rom whereas ota is coming from a cleanly stock rom or it wouldn't accept update. Make sense?

ive just rooted a new tf300t, installed voodoo root keeper, and updated.. all went well, i have a 300t with newest firmware and root.
my question is if i do a factory reset, will root be removed?
Thanks,
nope the factory reset only wipes userdata (on the internal storage and the data partition) i just did a factory reset this morning... rebooted... still had root (though u have to reinstall the superuser app)

Ditto. I restored last night. From settings (factory reset) and from the cold boot screen (wipe data). I kept root, but had to download Superuser from the Plat store. My apps did auto restore which was nice. I had to search Superuser though since it wasn't originally installed from the market. (The double restore was just because I was really annoyed with the lagginess and wanted to ensure I did everything possible so I only had to do it one time. Same process both times so it was not necessary.)

Thanks for the response guys!
While troubleshooting another issue I did a factory reset. I'm running stock JB. I rooted on ICS and kept root via ota root keeper. Anyway, after the factory reset none of my apps can gain root. /system/bin/su is there. I tried installing Superuser app and SuperSU but that didn't help.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks.

You had to have installed SuperSU and Superuser prior to updating to Jelly Bean. If you had the SuperSU binary, and backed up your root with Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper prior to updating.... you will be able to fully restore your root access after the Jelly Bean update.
If you only had Superuser prior to updating and backed up using Voodoo, you will most likely have lost your root, like several other TF300T users.

I did have super user installed before the JB update. Oh well I think my other issue is hardware so.I'm going to get a replacement tablet anyway.

I said SuperSU, not just Superuser. You need to have both installed... at least that's what I've heard works perfectly so far.

My issue is different than what you linked to. I updated to JB and restored root just fine. That's what that thread is about. My issue is a factory reset killed root

Oh, okay, sorry I misread. Doh!
Yeah, you're right, factory reset shouldn't break root. That is strange!

yes a factory reset usually kills root, at least that's how i unroot my old-broken nook tablet 6 months ago.
I have a thread on this too. Basically you can't use the debugfs method anymore because you can't symlink /data/local anymore. So if you restore normally after the job update, you're fine, but if you do a wipe, it doesn't work anymore despite such being in /system/xbin.
I'm going to assume we'll just have to wait for these awesome devs to come up with another exploit. Either that or unlock the bootloader and go the custom ROM route.

I guess right now bootloader is unlocked.
Because I didn't use unlock app from Asus, but I can get access to fastboot usb download protocol.
if you press vol down + power you'll get acces to a lot of functionality. Maybe it can help to get root back
PS: I lost my root too... And right now I'm trying to get it back.

No bootloader is not unlocked. I think that is a result of the update. I have not tried it but perhaps it could be used to flash .30 back on it? Care to try?

I can't try it right now, because I need to leave from the office.
But, I assume that we use fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash recovery twrp.blob this function to update recovery because bootloader is now accessible
I can try it only tomorrow morning. Maybe some else can try it faster and write here the result.

I don't know about the exact command structure but I did see a sample listing of command formats, similar to what you'd see if you typed adb with no arguments.

I downgraded to ics and rooted then used ota root keeper to preserve the root and get jb. However the tablet is lagy and I need to factory reset. Will the root survive a factory reset?

Yes, a factory reset doesn't remove root.

Be sure to reinstall SuperSU after resetting.
I did a factory reset using settings and my root is no longer there. Verified using SuperSU app & Root check apps.
Do I need to reflash SuperSU?
Would reflash of SuperSU alone suffice or is the process slightly different?
Yes, reflash via TWRP
