Root missing after factory reset - Mate 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I did a factory reset using settings and my root is no longer there. Verified using SuperSU app & Root check apps.
Do I need to reflash SuperSU?
Would reflash of SuperSU alone suffice or is the process slightly different?

Yes, reflash via TWRP

[Q] tf300t restore factory defaults, keep root?

ive just rooted a new tf300t, installed voodoo root keeper, and updated.. all went well, i have a 300t with newest firmware and root.
my question is if i do a factory reset, will root be removed?
Thanks,
nope the factory reset only wipes userdata (on the internal storage and the data partition) i just did a factory reset this morning... rebooted... still had root (though u have to reinstall the superuser app)

Ditto. I restored last night. From settings (factory reset) and from the cold boot screen (wipe data). I kept root, but had to download Superuser from the Plat store. My apps did auto restore which was nice. I had to search Superuser though since it wasn't originally installed from the market. (The double restore was just because I was really annoyed with the lagginess and wanted to ensure I did everything possible so I only had to do it one time. Same process both times so it was not necessary.)

Keep root and do a factory reset

As the topic says, is it possible to do a factory reset and keep root with Jelly Bean?

Yes, I rooted used Debugfs automated root, with default Superuser app for management. Used Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper to create a backup of my root (just in case).
After factory reset, I just installed Superuser, opened it and I had root. Just to be sure I opened Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper to see if I needed to restore root and I didn't need to. If I had needed to restore root, the backup was there anyway.
Yes.

I didn't. These are the steps I took.
1. Make sure you Install and use SuperSU
2. Install Voodoo OTA root keeper. Make a backup
3. Factory reset
4. Install super SU from market
5. Install vodoo from the market.
6. restore root in voodoo
7. open supersu
Might be an easier way to do it, but that gave me no problems.

Worked for me.
Yes. I used Survival Mode in SuperSU and I don't even need to restore root using OTA RootKeeper after factory reset or OTA update.
How does OTA Rootkeeper do it?
I just used the same method as conquereddroiduser and it worked, in Jelly Bean. But, earlier in Jelly Bean, I used OTA RootKeeper to temporarily un-root, then ran a factory reset and OTA Rootkeeper could not bring it back, despite un-root making an automatic backup of settings. (So I had to downgrade to ICS, root and then upgrade to JB again.) And given how the Infinity is setup, the internal storage is considered an SD card. So where is OTA Rootkeeper keeping the data? Or perhaps OTA Rootkeeper is not the reason we keep root after a factory reset? Because where is OTA Rootkeeper storing things to survive a factory reset if it's the only way root was kept? And if OTA Rootkeeper did it, why did it not find its backed up settings when I temporarily un-rooted and then performed a factory reset?
Someone who did it define factory reset please. is this wipe data, factory reset, or done from the stock recovery?

Not sure if you will lose root. Since you are already rooted the best way to go is use a custom recovery and factory wipe in recovery.
Once you have a custom recovery installed, why would you even want to use the Factory Reset function in the stock rom? You can do everything you need to do with much more flexbility in TWRP.
No idea what happens on the M8 if you do this, but I can tell you that on the Transformer tablets a factory reset from settings wiith CWM or TWRP installed left you in a nasty forced reboot to recovery loop.
Don't do it!
Oh - and no, any kind of wipe of data/cache/dalvik will not affect root. If you wipe /system it will, but then you wouldn't have a rom installed anyway!
Just do the factory wipe in TWRP. That'll wipe everything but /system and /data/media/ where your personal files (pics, videos, docs) live. If you want to get rid of those too format data in TWRP.
Edit: Sorry, didn't read your post correctly. Did you only root with Weaksauce? No S-off, no permanent root, no custom recovery?
In that case it depends where Weaksauce is installed to. I can't remember - Weaksauce didn't survive for long after using firewater, but my guess is, it would be installed to /data. And yes - a factory reset would wipe the app and you would have to install it again.

[Q] Upgrade to 5.1 from 5.0 without losing data?

How do I do it? I have a custom recovery installed (TWRP) and a rooted device. I know that I cannot use the OTA because lollipop checks the whole /system for modifications. But I want to upgrade without losing any data. I don't know how should I do it. Here are a few ideas:
1. Flash the OTA Zip using TWRP, I don't know what will happen.
2. Use the sideload option in TWRP, again I don't know what will happen.
Is there any way that I can upgrade using TWRP? It is okay if I lose my root, because I can root again; but I do not want to lose my data. Any help is appreciated. I am looking to use the factory image as my last resort.
Thanks!
You could root your 5.0 ROM and backup everything with Titanium, then flash the OTA zip and restore...

You can't flash the ota in twrp. Just flash the system and boot image from 5.1 with fastboot.

cannot root my tab after hard reset!!!!!

Hello
I have recently decided to hard reset my tab. I backs up everything with titanium backup (I had root at that time). But after that I thought if I hard reset with root, then my tab will malfunction. So I UNrooted it.
After hard reset I cannot root like before. Kingroot keeps failing to root. When I looked /system/bin and /system/xbin (with es explorer) there is a file named 'su'.
But I cannot get root access. I also cannot root again.
What sholud i do. Any help would be appreciated

You didn't unroot with the correct method, you left the su binaries. You still have the su binaries in system so all you should need now is the root management app, either the kinguser app or the SuperSU app, SuperSU is the better one of the two.
If you have custom recovery you can flash the SuperSU.zip in recovery, then reboot, open SuperSU and update the binaries and that should do it for you.
Or
You can search for the Kinguser APK and try installing it, I recommend SuperSU if you can it to work though, Kinguser doesn't work as well as SuperSU with some of the root apps.
If none of that works, try flashing the stock firmware and then start over from scratch with rooting the device again.

Well I used kingroot but I havnt had much progress.
It always stops at some percentage and reboots. After that when I open kingroot, it continues with percent it had stopped and tell root failed.
After doing this some days later I got notification from kingroot "root permission exception. Recommend restore immidietly." (I don't remember correctly).
Note :- I don't have any custom recovery. It always shows my tab is not supported.
My tab is iball slide 3g q7218
Kingroot and kinguser are same. Isntit?

Kingroot is the app that roots the device but you should also have an app that manages root permissions called Kinguser which serves the same purpose as Superuser/SuperSU. When you use the Kingroot app, it roots the device by injecting the su binaries in /system/xbin and then it should install Kinguser as your root permission manager.
This is similar to using the other rooting apps to inject su binaries, and then installing SuperSU to use those binaries.
What I'm telling you is using Kingroot isn't going to work because what it does is inject the su binaries in system, you already have the su binaries so Kingroot can't do what it does, that is why it fails.
What I'm telling you is that since you still have the SU binaries, you don't need Kingroot, you need the root management app that uses the su binaries, either the Kinguser(not Kingroot)app or the SuperSU app, preferably SuperSU. This will allow you to once again use your root permissions.
If you can't get Kinguser or SuperSU installed then you'll have to flash your stock firmware to remove the su binaries from system. Then you'll be able to start over with using Kingroot and it should work again.

No, to simplify this.
Do a Google search for:
"Return to stock (your model number)"

Or

One of them should work, install Kinguser and then convert to SuperSU.
If you want to know how to convert to SuperSU, do a Google search for:

Hey flashing to stock ROM worked.
I rooted successfully.
But i didnot lose any data from internal storage (although i lost my apps but fortunately i have a backup).
Is it the problem of flashing or is it normal

It's normal, usually data doesn't get wiped when flashing stock unless the flashed file upgrades/downgrades bootloader, locking/unlocking bootloader usually wipes data also.

Kinguser has issues with some root apps, SuperSU is what you need if you can get it successfully installed, some devices give trouble trying to convert to SuperSU, many of them bootloop after installing SuperSU.
There's a few different ways to get converted, search for them and try the methods that have worked best on your same brand(manufacture) of device.
