Hey Forum Members I just wanted to share an interesting event that happened to me last weekend...
I own a Trinity and it really does serve me well, but with all the hype and talk about the iPhone I wanted to give this device a try. I have read many things about its user interface and just how well it does the things it can do. So while going to Buffalo to do some shopping I picked up an iPhone.
I came home with my iPhone all excited and called up my buddy to come over to unlock and jailbreak it for me. I live in Canada and is using the Rogers network so iPhone must be unlocked to work. My buddy is an Apple/iPhone junkie who knows everything about it, plus I did not want to brick the device so I'd rather not do it myself. He came over at 9:00pm and it was done at 1:00am the next morning. The TTC (Public Transit) stopped running already on a Sunday night so I must drive my friends home and they live FAR!
A little background about myself (makes me sound like a loser but is relevant to the story):
In Toronto, Canada we have something that is called graduated licensing, I got my G2 license 5 years ago, but did not drive or had the chance to practice because I didn't have a car. When I got my car 3 years after I got my G2 I never drove because I was rusty and I preferred to get driven around instead.
It came to 1 month before my G2 expired which would mean that I would need to start from the beginning if I wanted my full license (my G). So I drove like crazy for the last month and did my highway test and surprisingly passed. So now I have my full license but my driving and sense of direction is really sh!t!!!
Back to the story:
So now I must drive my friends home and I didn't want to tell them the story above because I sound like such a loser. My wife is pregnant and she was sleeping so I can't wake her up. So I just grind my teeth and said I will drive them straight home.
Now with working iPhone on one hand and my Trinity on the other, I activated the GPS on my Trinity and had to pretend I am a good driver for the next 1 hour ride. At this point I was scared going on the highway by myself and not having a clue where the hell I was going (My friends don't drive and they had no idea how to get home from my place either). So i relied on the Trinity's GPS and just went for it. I managed to drive my friends home safely and I used the Trinity to reroute to go home. By the way, it was raining and very windy Sunday night. On my way home I thought to myself, wow what an ordeal and how ironic. My friend came over to get my iPhone to work so I can probably give up my Trinity, but in the end it was my Trinity that saved me!!! When I got home and this was about 2:30am I thought why did I even go through all this??? I sold my iPhone the next day!
My conclusion is that the iPhone is an amazing device and it does what it can do in an AMAZING way. The user interface is unmatched and the look and feel of the device is top notch. The web browsing is like no other mobile device I have ever used. But when you look beyond the esthetics, it really couldn't do much for me. I had to learn the hard way!!!
This story is just my peronal opinion on the iPhone due to experience and I just want to say I am NOT bashing the iPhone, but after this I will NEVER give up my Trinity/WM device for it.
Thanks for reading!
This makes me a think i maybe doing a mistake selling my XDA Atom for Iphone , i think i should keep both...
when you look at what the Iphone can do and then look at what our HTC phones can do it doesnt make sence for anyone on this forum to give up there HTC phone for an iphone. Heck it doesnt even make sence to purchase one.
Everything is subjective, but I have happily transitioned to using an iPhone over my collection of HTC devices. The key for me is the tweaking ability now avail on the iPhone. With the program ibrikr, you can add/download/delete files, ringtones and install 3rd party software.
While it is not true GPS, I use an application called Navizon on the iPhone and it is amazing how well it works. I do still bring my Trinity on some trips, but really there is nothing I "need" the HTC for. Don't get me wrong, I still love my Touch and Trinity, but am a daily iPhone user for the near future.
This is post that I wrote when I had some time to kill.... It is my in depth comparison of the Touch / Trinity vs. iPhone.

So... engadget reports a skype video calling apk in the wild. Anyone enterprising want to see if it works on the gtab?
Downloading it right now and will report back soon.
Edit.
Won't install on mine. Running Calk.
Old news lol. Wont work on anything other than the thunderbolt, unless there are two which i doubt
Let me tell you guys a touching story regarding the importance of skype releasing an android app for video skype.
I have many family members in my home country (pick a random country in Asia). As my elderly parents are getting older and older, it is getting increasingly difficult for them to travel. My aunts and uncles are all in their 70s and 80s.
Right before last New Year, I slept over at my "girlfriend's" place. She went on her laptop and skype videoed her father, who was taking a vacation in Russia. Not knowing what the hell skype was, I asked her and she showed me how it worked. Excited, I drove to the best buy as fast as I could and bought all the equipments I needed. After several successful tests at home, I went over to my parents's place and set up skype for them. I also bought a desktop computer to hook up to their 60-something inch plasma tv so they could skype using a bigass tv.
The hard part came when I had to instruct my 78 yr old uncle back in my home country how to install skype and set it up. 7 non-consecutive hours later, his image popped up on our screen. It was just in time for new year as well. So, during new year, all of us (my 4 siblings and 9 nephews and nieces) all gathered at my parents' place and had a skype video conference with our entire family on the other side of the planet.
My parents nowadays regularly skype with people over there. I've made it my mission to make sure each member of our family has a webcam and skype ready to go.
Amazing how skype has made a difference in our family.
Now that my parents have a droid tablet, they kinda want to be able to skype video while sitting comfortably watching tv. So, for now we're still waiting.
Why dont we switch to oovoo? Simple. I don't want to spend another 7 hours talking over the phone instructing my elderly uncle on how to install oovoo.
Goodintentions.... it's nice to hear from you .... yes i am constantly travelling between the US and Europe and Africa and i really need to have video skype for very similar reasons. The very reason i bought a tablet, was to travel!
BEST WISHES
Heinrich
I installed it on my Thunderbolt and it's everything we always hoped it would be. It's Skype with clear video.
I tried to install on my G Tablet running Vegan Ginger RC1 and it shows a green check mark next to "Not Installed" and that's how the story ends for now...
MC
Skype installed - Stock G Tablet.
Sorry posted too soon. Missed the whole video part.

After much deliberation on which tablet i would get, investigationg specs and options only, I went with the TF101 over the ipad 2. Whilst the transformer is an impressive beast is it really ready for the market considering the widespread lack of support compared to iOS?
As an avid gamer I am less than thrilled with the options available in these terms. I'm still in two minds on whether I get an iPad.
Can anyone make me feel better about my purchase?
I really don't know what's so fun with those silly ipad games. Seriously , go get an ipad and stop whining. It has only been a few months since the andriod tablet came out.

Thanks for your constructive comments. I was hoping to instigate some constructive discussion on developments and areas of improvement but your well ellocuted and educated comments will do.
Anyone else?
well I believe that Apple will always have a huge chunk of market share, as they do in the PC market, although I think Honeycomb needs simpler, and less geeky advertisements for it to be accepted by the average consumer. When you are asked by someone what your joyously typing away on, do they ask if its the Asus EEE Pad Transformer? Or do they often ask "is that an iPad?". Even when you tell them its your Transformer they still have no clue what it is. They need to expand the exposure of these tablets if Honeycomb, or Ice Cream Sandwich is to be successful. Its the same thing as nobody says "do you want to get fast food?" nearly as often as "wanna get mcdonalds?". People don't go into walmart very often asking for an Asus Transformer, they do go in to get an iPad though.
Ipads have a huge head start first and second exeyone thinks as a ipad as a toy and the android tablets are not really as they need more time to catch up. I honeycomb is easy to use as I have friends and family pick it up and start using it right away they all think it's cooler than the Ipads and a few people I know to Ipads even are jealous with what this thing can do

The way I see it is that Honeycomb is just the first step on where Android is leading too. It is more like a 'beta' product.
I wouldnt be too worried about support, just like mobile it will soon grow through the time. Especially when Ice Cream Sandwich comes which will allegedly improve app compatibility between devices which should be easier for developers.
Honeycomb isnt treated as an OS on its own like that it will be forgotten and lose support, it is a specific build of Android that will be improving continuously. Things can only get better, not worse.

You must not be a gamer. The iPad has some console quality games that Android tablet users wish they had.
check out the upcoming game Warm Gun... Coming to pc and iOS.
Thanks everyone. Its hard not to recognise that this is a kickn product, cant wait for it to be better supported though. If I could just get order and chaos online working id be happy to wait for anything else. Well maybe modern combat also

That ain't a console quality game. That's an iPad quality game that also happens to be on the PC.
The iPad 2 is still only about the speed of a netbook. High-powered games like Deus Ex 3 isn't gonna be on the iPad anytime soon, unless it's a side scroller.
If you're serious about gaming, get a cheap AMD A6 or A8 laptop instead, for roughly the price of an iPad (or less). Load up Steam, and you have all the game genres at your fingertips.
I had the iPad 1 and I currently have the iPad2 and TF. I really dislike the iOS operating system, since the 4.3.5 update, there is NO jailbreak, so you have to pay $10+ for a app. I've had the TF for only a day now, and I really do like it. I use my tablets mainly for internet, word processing, e-mail, etc. With the ipad i'd have to pay $20 for docs-to-go, and it's pathetic in its ability to really word process and transfer files to your computer. With the TF, Polaris is pre-installed and works really really well.
Yes, the cons of the TF are the market place. IT is very small, and you can browse through it within 10 seconds. Since there is a huge influx of Android based tablets, I can only see the market growing exponentially, soon.
TF FTW!

complain about no apps on your tablet
talk about pirating them in the same post
+1 against piracy. such activity would just prevent devs from developing apps.
to OP. the IOS didn't have tablet-ready apps when it first launched. had it been dismissed as a "dying animal" at that time would have prevented your the app-selection you're touting about now from being developed.
same goes for the andiod, or any other OSs.
btw: check out dungeon defenders to see what type of games the TF/honeycomb is capable of. still not convinced? get an ipad and be happy that way.

I already have an iPhone4 so I ultimately have no use for a iPad or iPad2 since everything they can run I have on my phone. This is why I got my transformer. Different OS for different apps, and the keyboard dock makes it a perfect netbook replacement. Sadly though Honeycomb itself I believe is just a test bed. It's only a matter of months till ICS 4.0 is released and apps switch from being written mostly for 2.x to 4.x skipping the small tablet world of Honeycomb that lots of devs are ignoring. This is why I plan on selling the TF and getting the TF2 with the new quad core CPU once it comes out late this year.

It really all depends on what u use it for. Netbook at home, netbook in class, some random browsing, has scriptures and hymns for church, plays n64 great with hdmi for the big screen. Its perfectly find for what I use it for... for now I guess. Who knows what'll come out later.
U say the jump from os 2 to 4. What about a jump from 3 to 5, or 6? I think it'll be a little while before android disappears.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I feel that tablet support will get far better in the next few months once ICS is released. The only reason the iPad has such great app support is because is it essential a giant sized iPhone, almost all apps that work on the iPhone work on the iPad in some shape or form (most of them are zoomed/stretched, which is supported in HC 3.2). As someone else mentioned Honeycomb is more of a test bed for Android, it's Google's first foray into a tablet based OS and with the first generation of anything, stuff is always sub-optimal.

No, shame on Google for limiting the refund time to 15 minutes, which makes users turn to piracy to test out games/apps. Think about this for a minute: lets say you buy a game on your TF like Galaxy on Fire 2 that requires you to download additional content that could take up to 20 minutes to download and costs about $12. Once everything is downloaded, you start playing the game and you don't like it for some reason because either its glitchy, the controls suck, etc... if the return window was 24 hours like it used to be you could simply return the game and get your $12 back, but now you're screwed and have a game that you will never play again and you're out $12. Repeat this cycle a few times and you could be out a nice chunk of change, the more extreme option of this would be the buyer gets pissed and never buys another app again for the fear that they will get screwed the same way again.
****ty practices on the sellers end create the need for piracy, most people don't do it simply because they're cheap. Are PS3 and XBOX360 games really worth $60? If you buy 7 games, that's more than the price of both consoles and the price of a low-mid range computer!
Is it easier and really worth it to drive to a movie theater (which could be 20 minutes away), wait in line for anywhere from 5-60 minutes, pay $11-13 for a single ticket (which used to be $5 10-15 years ago for the same quality movie at the same theater), spend about the same amount on soda/popcorn/snacks, hopefully find at least two seats together (depending on how many people you're with), watch 20 minutes of previews, deal with assholes in the theater talking loudly (possibly on their cellphones) or throwing popcorn, having to perfectly choose when to go to the bathroom so you don't miss anything, finally watch the movie (which ended up sucking big time), filing out of the theater, and finally driving home while wondering why you actually wanted to go in the first place.
Or just simply pirate a half-decent copy a few days after the movie is released and watch it in the privacy of your own home where you have all the food you want and you can pause the movie to go take a piss whenever you want, all without spending a dime to watch it (excluding all the necessary stuff needed to obtain that pirated copy). If the movie was good, buy a copy of it when it comes out on DVD in a few months. If it sucked you just saved yourself a lot of time and money.
See what I mean?
LOL! Hypocrites.

If you've come on here just to ask about how much fun Android is to use over boring IOS in day to day use then there's your answer.
If your such an avid gamer why buy either? you could buy both an xbox and a playstation for the same money as a transformer
Finally saying goodbye to Android.
Going back to iOS, iPhone 4s shipping status is shipped. Kapooow
Reasons for dumping android:
- fragmented apps, one works on a device never works on a new device, apps developers can't keep up on making their apps works on every single android device coming out to the point most of thrm don't even bother updating.
-few developer support, i mean when you are on the iOS, every single developer apps that is made, works on iPhone 4, 4s, 3gs, 3g, iPod touch, iPad and iPad2.
- tones of accessories.
- battery life, what i hate about my infuse 4g take 3-4 hrs to charge and 5-6hrs to discharge on maximum usage. When in my iPhone 4 tooks 1hr or less to charge.
- every single apps just works, no crash, no hang ups, and errors, my infuse is snappier than my iPhone 4 but the Adroid os itself really is not refined yet.
- almost all company out there want an app of their company and they do have on iOS, on android not that much and if they even have it does not work on my infuse 4g.
- flash in android id nice, but skyfire fix that on iOS, and you dont have those annoying ads that drains your battery.
- warranty, if you have an iPhone warranty is just a walk-in, no more argument and reasoning, just drop by any apple store and when you walk out, you are holding a brand new iPhone.
- love the experience on android in customization, but after a few weeks and months, the customization does not cover the hate you get of important apps that does not works, and no one even care about the customization around you.
- ice cream sandwich will solve the fragmented Adroid OS eco system, but it is not there yet. I don't want to be in that eco when they are fixing it yet and it has not been started to this date.
Yes I have the iPhone before i went to android, that is why I see all those thing how important the iOS, it just work for me.
May be in the near future I will be buying an Android device, but i am sure it is going to be a very long while.
I know android hardware is way better than iPhone 4s but even in my iPhone 4 it just works every single time.
I found out that bechmark does not mean anything, if it does not work correctly.
Come on, em i an apple fanboy, NO! Thats why i keep trying to buy and test on store if there is a new android coming out.
I wanted to tell my self Android can beat Apple, but I found it myself that as of this day, it is a long way.
And It is so hard to sell my Samsung Infuse 4g and any android device, because every month or two there is a new device,
I found out that it is like a car, if there is a new model that is been release, your car will look like an old model even though it is still shiny and a few months old. That is why BMW and MERCEDEZ and other luxury car don't usually introduce a neww model in a short period of time.

Some people just like simplicty......cant be mad bruh.
but i like being OUTSIDE OF THE BOX.
See, I never understood what the point of threads like this is. If you want to go to an iPhone, go. You don't need to justify it to everyone here. 99% of the people here are happy with Android and don't really care about the reasons you prefer an iPhone. I don't mean that in a mean way, but everyone should pick a phone depending on what they like the most. You don't need to tell us, just move along. At best you'll get "Ok, bye", more than likely you'll get people arguing for something that was entirely unnecessary.
The iPhone is a great phone if it does what you want. Enjoy it.
That said... Ok, bye!
I will admit, I'm frustrated at the rate manufacturers are pumping out Android devices. By the time you make a decision and by one you have a month to enjoy it before something better is announced. Good luck with the 4s .

While I can agree on some of your points I think you stretched the truth on a few. For instance ios4 crippled a 3g. It was somewhat fixed in later versions but it hardly "just worked". I couldn't return it to at&t and they just gave me a working model. And as far as all apps working and no crashes is pure bs. You can go to many apps in the app store and see people complaining of crashes etc. in the reviews. Anyway it is your choice I'm not here to argue. The iphone was on my list of possible upgrades until it came out to just be a slightly upgraded model. I'm sure it will still sell like crazy and be all the rage.

That's a pretty ridiculous statement. How old are you? Android Wear was announced months ago and it has also been published in many media circles that Samsung was also on board starting perhaps 1 month ago to release their Android Wear variant.
First of all the Gear is a lot more nuanced for anyone to say that they've gotten the gist of understanding it's full potential in a mere 2 days. It's a new platform hence it's more than meets the eye . That's like me buying the Pebble knowing that it is extremely rudimentary in it's functionality and saying after 1 day that it's garbage. I'd still need at least a week to say that. That is why paid reviewers never release their final draft before spending sufficient time with any new device. (From what I've heard the Pebble is very buggy not well built. No Siri in sight. Yet the media raves about it gathering all the lemmings to spread the gospel.) Samsung has really dared to innovate well ahead of anybody else. They should be given a little credit & respect.
The Svoice is excellent for texting, reminders, calling my contacts, note taking with about a 95% accuracy rate. The media player is phenomenal and when it's combined with the free app Launcher from the gear store I can't imagine a better setup. Notifications are superb. Battery life is great. Camera is very useful when I need to take a visual note of a label or whatever. Customization of the navigation layout. Not to mention the developing platform of apps I use on a regular basis that are amazing when it comes to adding awesome functionality (Omelet app to share quick pics with my wife who owns a gear as well. Fleksy to type messages when it's too noisy)
To the statement of voiding your warranty in 2 days. Who does that? The Tizen SDK is there for any one to use. It's fairly simple and doesn't make you an expert on a platform because you've written a basic app. The list of things that you've given is an inherent part of any device like an Iphone or any smart device. I would argue that because you've done those things on those platforms doesn't make you an engineer.
So I ask you go back and watch the Google I/O event again and keep in mind that the Android Wear has ripped off many features from the Gear. Even the hardware requirements are mimicked from the Samsung Gear and Galaxy platform. I honestly sorta like it myself (the Wear Op system). However navigating that thing is gonna be a nightmare. There is room for improvement on it as well just like the Gear's Tizen and credit must be given when it's due. Kaygeee it takes these companies a long time to get these things right. Enjoy the times we're living in. Imagine how awful the 70's, 80's and 90's were when in came to tech. 300 Bucks is not a lot to spend in order to be on the cutting edge.
Like the previous commentor to your statement said, return your device back to wherever you bought it or sell it on Ebay/Craigslist. I for one am going to see how things develop with Android Wear, however I can proudly say that I've enjoyed everyday spent with my Samsung Gear. If I ultimately move on to the Android Wear devices after 3 months of Gear use. I like many other happy Gear owners have no regrets. What other capable powerhouse smart watches were released in bulk within the past year? Exactly!

I have to agree with the above. Android wear looks like there is almost too much going on. Navigation looks cumbersome. I like being able to tell my device to turn off by pressing a button. I had the original gear and that side button drove me nuts. Having the home button on the front of gear 2 is nice. I can run my watch for 3 days easy taking calls emails texts playing games. Shorting pics of computer tags for work. Would I like to see wear come to gear 2. I'm on the fence. Would I try it ? Yes. Will I go out and get the new watch? No. I feel gear 2 is better built and worth the 300$ gear live isn't worth the 200$

I'm no expert... but from my point of view the Room for improvement on the Tizen S-voice is a lot.
compared to Google Now! which comes on a similar device released only couple of months after Gear 2 release
and why would i imagine the 70's, 80's and 90's when we live in 2014 my friend times change fast
like i said its good... but is it good enough with the young Tizen on it? how would it be with Android wear on it? is that going to bring out more functional potential.
I don't want to sell it. ill keep it around and wait for more improvement. or a chance to Port Android wear to it.
But in the moment i want to know how much people want to see The Android Wear on the Gear 2. i think I'm not the only one, thats why i made this Poll.

Okay Junior. Now make sure you drink your warm milk, put on your whitety nightys and relax a little. I'm out but thanks for the redundant useless (I mean brilliant) poll. Attempted to spit some knowledge at you but your rebuttals indicate it'll be a lost cause. Who needs a healthy substantive debate when we've got Junior around these parts.

:laugh:Like you said Junior you're the expert. Sooner or later your rants and complaining will force Samsung to their knees. Certainly now they will port Wear over to the Gear2 right away cause you're Kaygeee. You've been ripped off. You bought a piece of tech and something else is on the horizon. You should have been privy to that info before hand. Your bullet points are sound. You've voided your device within 2 days. Overall you are rational in all of concerns. They'll certainly seek your mercy since you have the power of this poll. Yeah Junior. You can make it happen. We support you!

LOL i like your sense of humour your funny.
the vote count is increasing as we speak
Kaygeee Thats Meee sooner or later Samsung is on its Kneee :silly:
maybe we should make a song... and post it on youtube..
i'll record and you rap on my Gear 2. Oeps the video recording time is only 15 seconds bummer.
I sold my gear 2 and bought a gear live for the simple reason that I want a fully functional smart watch to work with Cyanogenmod and not have to rely on the TouchWiz framework, I did enjoy my time with the gear 2 though on Omega rom and if android wear did come out for the gear 2 then I would probably cancel my order but until it's done it's android wear from here on out so I have the flexibility to use it on any rom I choose.

The main problem with it, and any other Android wear watchs is the 1 day use bit. Sure it's got an always on display but if they're advertising one day use, it probably means less.
Holding for for now until early reports from early adopters.
I like Google Now, but I never use it on my phone. The Gear 2 is giving me all the info I need with a 2.5-3 day battery.
I do also use the cam so gonna need support for that too.
---------- Post added at 09:25 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:39 AM ----------
Also gonna need it to play music from device (For gym), and keep all the health integration.
I just wish I had hangouts on the tizen, and also the ability to use keyboard to reply for those odd rare occasions i need to (so far never but would be a nice to have).
Facebook app to view whats going on and eBay would also be nice.
As of now Tizen is better than Android Wear because of App availability AND UI. Also if your talking about Google now and S-Voice they BOTH need Internet connections to work. Which here in the Philippines is not available everywhere. So I don't really care about that.
I guess yes Samsung will port Android Wear to the Gear 2 but they'll still modify it so it will still work as it works right now.

Any kind of voice command is useless to me, it makes you look like a douche in public and if you're not in public just use your phone.
Tizen is growing on me, the music player is good / fine for gym, has cool health sensors and heart rate etc. It works for how i intend to use it.
If i get caught short while in the house away from phone i can still take call on device, dont think talking is on the Wear agenda.
Camera I also use often, very often. It's ideal for a quick snap.
The 3rd party apps are trash, and the forcing to use messaging instead of hangouts is whack, but as I don't intend to reply i just wish the notification showed the whole message.
The music player control is also way better on Tizen, everything on one screen, well thought out, little icons top right from clock face to go back. None of this silly swiping malarkay!
The fact you can send send directly from phone is also very cool!, the music player has plenty of features, favourites etc. it's actually very good. If this is a fitness device the Gear 2 shines.
+1 for android wear
