[REQUEST] WebOS port for One X - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Well as most of you might of heard, webos has finally been released in beta to the public. I was just wandering if anyone would take on the challenge of bringing such amazing OS to a phone that i think its perfect in form factor and everything for it. And i think the sooner development starts on the One X with webos well the more accostumed developers will get and maybe with future releases from hp the One X could be one of the devices to get early builds from them. Its just a request after all though, i think it would make a lot of us hapoy to see it

Its one of my long terms goals, over the course of the next year or so, now that things with JB have smoothed over. Though it might not even happen... may be impossible. The OS is entirely different than Android. The only thing they share is the Linux kernel (which still needs heavy modification).
No ETAs. Ever.
If you want to contribute and you can contribute to the project, let me know via PM or email.

but i saw that web os is ported to htc evo 3d already.how is evo 3d different from our phone?

Because this forum doesn't have the same developers as the EVO, save reason why the One S hasn't got it either.

It kind of is but the fact is that our device isn't as popular as others in attracting developers. While the ones we do have are great, it simply can't match the number of developers for other devices which makes large projects like this more achievable.

Ehh that's sorta true but it only takes one dev, I've been around both big and small communities on xda and its usually just one big dev who comes through with the break through that paves the way for the less experienced devs
Sent from my One X using Tapatalk 2

Really not a smack in the face at all to our current devs. Our current devs may just not be interested in webOS. They're busy making better stuff for what we have now. and doing a mighty good job thus far. You can't fault them for not having the interest in webos (i personally would consider running it just to say i could, but i'd be back on CR probably within a couple hours.

As a touchpad owner i guarantee you will hate webos because of the lack of apps.
It's funny to see people request android on touchpad and people request webos on android

Have to agree there. WebOS had (has?) so much potential.... In some ways it's still superior to Android. But without apps, its pretty useless. With no OEM backing it anymore... Where's the incentive to develop?
It has crazy potential though. Back it the early Android porting days of the Touchpad, someone created an android environment that ran entirely as a WebOS page for running apps. If an OEM could pull that off, they'd have the best of both worlds.

With all these new phones coming out it's hard to pick which one will have the best/most developer support. Back about 1-2 years ago there were many phones but only a few "great" high end ones so most of the developers were on those all at the same time. Now there are many high end phones on all networks and internationally so the developers are spread out. It wasn't a problem before, but now I won't buy a phone at launch, no matter how great, before I see what the development will be like. I made that mistake with the Galaxy Note for AT&T. The development there wasn't even close to the international version.
The One X is an incredible phone. Imagine what it would be like with the amount of development that the Nexus or even the Evo 3d has? It's kinda sad that this phone doesn't have that much popularity with more developers. It's a better phone all around than the Nexus or Evo 3d.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app

Actually I can't say that I won't buy a phone again without looking at the development because I do plan on getting the Note 2 at launch. The tough part is gonna be figuring out which version to get. It's probably gonna be like the sgs3. Some of the versions have more development than the others.

I would actually prefer looking at how to merge some WebOS features into Android, rather than port the OS over without a halfway decent app store .

True story. I wonder if we'll start to see Webdroid or AndrOS hybrid-ports in the next couple of years.

Which android phone has the most active developers?

My next android phone will the one that has the most active developers/hackers. Your hardware is only as good as the software it runs. There is no point in buying a phone if hardly anything is being developed for it. I want greatest selection in rom's and apps. Which handset should I go for?
i've got a nexus one, and there are quite a large selection of roms, themes and apps. And its got pretty impressive hardware and looks stunning. I've got one, and love it.
I would say just being what it is and know that the nexus 1 is awesome. Get a nexus s. Or get a evo shift. I have one and its a quick little bugger

The problem with this is that the amount of developers change with every new device release. Never get a phone based on the number of developers that said phone has. You will learn that as soon as a new device is released alot of developers sell their current device to get the new one.

The HD2 is a legend and will always hold a great geek factor. The nexus well that depends on how many jump ship. It will be OK for at least a year untilled Google releases the next version and then you will see development slow on the device.

Google buying Motorola

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/08/supercharging-android-google-to-acquire.html?m=1
Wow
Does this increase the possibility of Motorola making the next Nexus phone after Prime?
not sure what the relevance to the HTC sensation this has to be fair...
I just read this on CNN.com. Although it doesn't really have anything to do with HTC, it's still a very interesting piece of tech news. We don't know how this will affect Motorola's practices, but it's likely that bootloaders will be unlocked and Google will release future reference phones (Nexus) through the Motorola brand.
I'll be keeping an eye on further developments. Could there be a Motorola in my future?
Quite sure that won't change much in relation to OEMs. It's a defensive move (17k patents).

In all honesty,i don't even have a Sensation. I have the Evo 3d. I read it in the 3d general forum.
Because our phones are so similar I spend a lot of time reading about the awesome stuff your devs are doing. I was only trying to let you know whats up with Android.
Btw.. you all have a Beautiful work of art in your hands. The Sensation looks like a wonderful device. I hope the development guys go back and forth between the sensation and 3d . Maybe the answers to any flaws in the devices can be worked out together ..(ie touchscreen).

Is development dead?

I figured after source for 4.03 was released we would be seeing all kinds of activity in the development section. For the first 4-5 days after source I thought it was just the calm before the storm, now I'm getting the feeling the phone is just basically dead in the water. Bummer.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Dead? No not yet. But unless we figure out root for the new firmware and get s-off it will be dead. If one of the devs breaks their phone and gets one on the 2.20 firmware as a replacement then they're out of business.
What happened to all the "man, once source is released development is really gonna takeoff and we'll see this device's full potential"? Lol

This phone is getting ready to go bye bye real quick. I bought it the first day available and have not complained about development for it one single time, but I am officially tired of waiting for this or for that to be released before we can really see roms/kernels take off. The problem is there isn't much out there to jump to.

Definitely not dead yet. I developed for about a year over on the Inspire/DHD, and just moved here recently. We really are waiting for a source drop on the new 4.0.4, as 4.0.3 is now basically 'EOL' so to speak.
But. Like I said, expect to see a lot of work coming in the future, at least from Me. Team Impulse is on the way, and we'll be bringing some great work here.

I think you're probably right. I haven't seen anything really new. I think interest in this phone is waning more and more everyday. Too bad. Its really an excellent phone, but I think the next big release will push it farther down the ladder.
For what its worth, the gs3 isnt too much newer than the OneX.. my buddy bought one and begged me to root it, and I was trolling their forums for roms and mods and couldn't really find anything better than what our devs have been pooping out. Some of the 4.0.4 ROMs are awesome, and that's without source? I see development kickin ass for this phone so far. The devs are making everything happen exactly how I want the phone to run. I mean seriously, have you flashed rohans AOKP alongside the beastmode kernal? Used team nocturnals blazing roms with coredroid and themed? Checked out scotts cleanroms? Over clocked to 2.1 ghz and be be blazing fast? What more do you need lol. If i was ballin' i would donate thousands of dollars to these devs just for what they've done so far with the little resources HTC screwed them with. But at the same time, who the hell am I to voice an opinion Haha.

I came from metro pcs and the development there is slower then here but learned to wait and know devlepoment isnt easy. I mean why don't you start making roms yourself so you can make it the way you like
This thread needs to be deleted, its disrespectful towards our hard working devs and discourages new devs with the lack of appreciation

The troll is heading back to his bridge!!

So I've received the HTC One S a few days ago (not the One X + because tmobile doesn't like nice phones) and I'm falling in love with it! So I guess this means goodbye, at least for a while. I'm sure this is good news for most lol. If it's any conciliation, the HTC one S development thread is horrible!! It has no personality what so ever and no one objects when others ask for ETAs which is something I've grown to genuinely love about this community Hopefully Bhundven and his team successfully port jelly bean (and have TV out working) but I'm sure a few weeks after, there'll be a mass migration back to ics in favor of a more "stable rom." lol Anywho good luck guys, the Samsung Galaxy S 4g will always be in my heart!

I've also been eyeing that phone... I think the One X is too big, and the One S is much closer to the size of the GS4G, which I like very much. I've also checked out the One S forums, but am still on the fence, especially since my phone works so well with these custom roms, I really don't have a great reason to upgrade, other than trying something new..
please report back how you like it (or send a PM if you don't want to clutter up the board here).

Yeah honestly I can't stress to you how awesome this phone is! The display is super bright, the resolution is also pretty good so don't worry about qhd complaints specially since you're coming from the S 4g display. The camera is professional quality and it preforms well day to day. If you don't like sense you can always install apex or a stock aokp ics rom but I happen to like sense personally specially the widgets and customizations. The rooting method, like for most htc phones, is significantly harder. There is another thing called S-off which has hindered development for the phone. There are still plenty of roms to play around with (including jelly bean!) but the installation is pretty tricky so for instance, you'll need to use a command prompt to flash something called a boot image to install any time and it's easy to brick. There are other new terms you'll need to learn of course. Don't let this scare you. One of the best things is the battery life (Both onscreen and stand by). The sheer performance is out of this world for example it can be over clocked to 2.1 mhz! Trust me when I say you won't regret having this phone! I've even heard from some it's better than the one X

AS HTC has not comparable chipset to the Nexus5 and Kitkat is new on the HTC One, That makes it harder to port it.

I get it, just because something is hard doesn't mean it shouldn't be done.
There are some neat manufacturer features which would make our phones better, example Wifi Calling.
The code for that has been released for a long time yet it's not something google wants to approach.
Nexus 5 isn't pure android it's pure Google with it's own custom launcher so with that why not add some other neat features and launchers why let google control what this phone should be?
This phone was made to be a developer phone so why not develop it to it's fullest potential I'm running a rom based off Nexus 7 KVT49L that's loaded with features. It's not from this site and when someone mentioned this rom the post was deleted. That just seems closed minded and hinders development in my opinion. Luckily I saw the post and checked out the rom.
Think how pissed the manufacturers would be if all their cool features could be incorporated on one phone.
One last thing just because someone has a different opinion than yours doesn't make it wrong.
Peace
