Which android phone has the most active developers? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

My next android phone will the one that has the most active developers/hackers. Your hardware is only as good as the software it runs. There is no point in buying a phone if hardly anything is being developed for it. I want greatest selection in rom's and apps. Which handset should I go for?

i've got a nexus one, and there are quite a large selection of roms, themes and apps. And its got pretty impressive hardware and looks stunning. I've got one, and love it.

I would say just being what it is and know that the nexus 1 is awesome. Get a nexus s. Or get a evo shift. I have one and its a quick little bugger

i got a mytouch 4g it has pretty good development it has 768 ram

Any Nexus phone would probably have the most developers.

Samsung
Galaxy S and Galaxy S II

xda-stats
It would be nice if xda would post stats like this.
I know newer versions of phpbb have this feature.
Most active topics, most active posters, etc.

The gs2. I don't think the galaxy nexus even has as many devs as they do.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA App

The HTC HD2. Even after more than 2,5 years it is still one of the most popular device on XDA.

Hd2, the Vendetta of android phones...nothing can beat it, not for 2 years more..
It have got its own rules, the hard thing is finding a piece is hard, coz most of them are with devs and non will sell it till it have a hardware prob.

Yep, all HD2 on ebay.in are either old or refurbished.

I think HTC HD2.
You can put like anything on that thing I heard. Windows 6.5 (stock= not recommended) ; 7,5
Android, Ubuntu.
And it got A LOT of ROMs
Also very elegant and good looking.

The problem with this is that the amount of developers change with every new device release. Never get a phone based on the number of developers that said phone has. You will learn that as soon as a new device is released alot of developers sell their current device to get the new one.

I so miss my here. But t-mobile sucks here. I think I'm going for a galaxy next time 5.3 inch screen sounds lovely.

The HD2 is a legend and will always hold a great geek factor. The nexus well that depends on how many jump ship. It will be OK for at least a year untilled Google releases the next version and then you will see development slow on the device.

I love this phone

I just came from the Atrix. I thought that I would be OK running the atrix without mods(locked bootloader), but i think i went through with-drawls from CM. Motorola blows goats with their locked blootloaders. Ther stock price is down 10%
Design Gears bricked his phone, that was the final straw. I will never by a Motorola phone again
Loving it too!
Coming from Leo I have found it very similar just with more mpx and RAM/ROM
Bye physical buttons as well.
So far so good (2 days with it)
some testings have showed that browsing speed of Atrix is not faster than Inspire. Proud to own an Inspire.
I agree, it is a great phone. Had it for a week now, it was a nice upgrade from my HTC Aria.
Love this phone too. Coming from 4 years of every iPhone - finally got bored and made the jump.
At first it was like a really bad break up - thought about the iPhone 4 every single day, missed it when I would hold or caress another phone, and wanted many of the features/memories back. Now after about two months, rooting, flashing to MIUI (following weekly builds), cattleprod's Cyan04.7 Kernel, and other tweaks and mods, I'm wholeheartedly fulfilled and more ways then before. Can't imagine going back to that terrible world I was in before.
Don't get me wrong, I have an iPad 2 and wouldn't give that up for the world (or any other Android tablet) though. Apples vs oranges though.
Upgraded from a cheap quick messaging phone

Came from Iphone 4 and I'll never go back. Been with apple for past few years with 3g, 3gs, 4 and never again. The customization of Android makes it all worth the transition 100 times over.
So yes needless to say I love my Inspire 4g! In fact trying to talk buddy of mine into buying one instead of the Infuse. I prefer HTC.

The infuse has about 1/2 the RAM and only 200 MHz more CPU (easily in the stable OC range)
Also, the only bad thing about moving from the iPhone was the apps I had bought. It was SO easy to sync my contacts to Gmail.
I love his phone also. After rooting, custom Roms etc... this phone is even better. I switched from being and Iphone user and will not go back. I am waiting to get my wife one for her upgrade so she can get rid of the Iphone also.

Sadly I had to get rid of mine today I needed the money for my wifes bday, but I'm hoping soon things will turn up and I'll have the money to buy another one...I miss it already. I hope more people buy this phone so they can realize how amazing HTC + Android are...run from your iPhones please.

Count me in on the Inspire love. I've had mine for a couple months now and find it still to be an exceptional smartphone. I haven't rooted mine but I do use custom launchers. Currently using GO Launcher EX with the GoContacts/GoDialer and continue to be amazed by this Inspire.
I can't take screenshots on my Inspire but this is exactly what it looks like from these screenshots of my HD2. The only difference is the taskbar.

Long Pole = Note
Doubt you would want to hold a Long Pole to your face ha.

Welcome funziebear,
I was set on the Note as I thought I had to have that big screen for my aging eyes. Test drove it in stores and liked the phone and screen, not so much native calendar. Went with the One S for what I thought was an interim phone till the Note came to TMobile.
I think I will stick with the One S. It is a much bigger display than my N1 and very easy to read. I thought it would feel like just a small upgrade in screen size, but wrong. Excellent page rendering and pinch-to-zoom. Have gotten, to my disbelief, up to 13mb dl's in Dayton Ohio. With TMobile here and their weak signal strength in some areas, I am still very happy. Only negative is poor speaker, that maybe a rom/OTA can fix.
I am now not sure that I even need a 4.6 screen. You will find this sub-forum very friendly. Some folks on the Note sub-forum were very high on themselves and began turning me off to even getting the phone. I guess those folks are on all forums to some extent. I have frequented many over the years. Although, still a young sub-forum the "older" members are very helpful and patient with new owners.
Enjoy--
Ken

To be fair mate, even if the iPhone was better than the S3 in every way, the majority on here would still say the S3 because Android kicks ass :
Personally though, I would pick the S3 because it's more powerful, more customizable and generally a better phone.
And that's not because I'm an Android fanboy, cause I'm not, it's simply because S3 performs much better. But as Allanitomwesh said, it's a choice of simplicity or features.

If you have the option of either I just don't see the point in the 4S. No phone is future proof but the SIII will give you a lot longer useable life than the 4S at this point.

S3 is faster, very customisable lot of useless thing to do with... useless but im sure you will want to do...
Iphone is simpler. Does what iit is supous to do..
Easy answer... Android rules and is the best so pick the s3. Iphone is for follower
LG Faberon made by meinem GNote aus Berlin TTTT
A big one is price. The S3 is much newer and fuller featured than the 4S, but the 4S still costs almost as much as it did on release. So if you have to buy now the S3 is more bang for your buck (outright at least).
Still it'll be interesting to see what the ip5 is like. I'm locked into the android ecosystem enough that it'll take a lot to convert me, but it will no doubt be a great phone.
Samsung is going to unveil a new device in their Galaxy flagship - probably a 5.5 incher Note II. I can't wait for iPhone 5 but now I am confused between GS III and the to be released device. It's obvious, I think, considering we don't have to buy a phone at its outright price here in India. Buying such a high end phone is a sort of one time luxury for me. Wish it was the same as US where people switch over their older models for new one as soon as it is out in the market. So, wait for August 15th then or quickly jump on the bandwagon by buying the SIII ?
S3 is galaxies better than any of Apple's i****
If you only use it for texting maybe iprone. But why would anyone get a tiny screen? Video photos browsing all much better on s2 or s3. Beauty? Android. BUT im waiting to get s3 till 4g lte is available in my area.

[REQUEST] WebOS port for One X

Well as most of you might of heard, webos has finally been released in beta to the public. I was just wandering if anyone would take on the challenge of bringing such amazing OS to a phone that i think its perfect in form factor and everything for it. And i think the sooner development starts on the One X with webos well the more accostumed developers will get and maybe with future releases from hp the One X could be one of the devices to get early builds from them. Its just a request after all though, i think it would make a lot of us hapoy to see it
Its one of my long terms goals, over the course of the next year or so, now that things with JB have smoothed over. Though it might not even happen... may be impossible. The OS is entirely different than Android. The only thing they share is the Linux kernel (which still needs heavy modification).
No ETAs. Ever.
If you want to contribute and you can contribute to the project, let me know via PM or email.
but i saw that web os is ported to htc evo 3d already.how is evo 3d different from our phone?
Because this forum doesn't have the same developers as the EVO, save reason why the One S hasn't got it either.

It kind of is but the fact is that our device isn't as popular as others in attracting developers. While the ones we do have are great, it simply can't match the number of developers for other devices which makes large projects like this more achievable.

Ehh that's sorta true but it only takes one dev, I've been around both big and small communities on xda and its usually just one big dev who comes through with the break through that paves the way for the less experienced devs
Sent from my One X using Tapatalk 2
Really not a smack in the face at all to our current devs. Our current devs may just not be interested in webOS. They're busy making better stuff for what we have now. and doing a mighty good job thus far. You can't fault them for not having the interest in webos (i personally would consider running it just to say i could, but i'd be back on CR probably within a couple hours.
As a touchpad owner i guarantee you will hate webos because of the lack of apps.
It's funny to see people request android on touchpad and people request webos on android

Have to agree there. WebOS had (has?) so much potential.... In some ways it's still superior to Android. But without apps, its pretty useless. With no OEM backing it anymore... Where's the incentive to develop?
It has crazy potential though. Back it the early Android porting days of the Touchpad, someone created an android environment that ran entirely as a WebOS page for running apps. If an OEM could pull that off, they'd have the best of both worlds.
With all these new phones coming out it's hard to pick which one will have the best/most developer support. Back about 1-2 years ago there were many phones but only a few "great" high end ones so most of the developers were on those all at the same time. Now there are many high end phones on all networks and internationally so the developers are spread out. It wasn't a problem before, but now I won't buy a phone at launch, no matter how great, before I see what the development will be like. I made that mistake with the Galaxy Note for AT&T. The development there wasn't even close to the international version.
The One X is an incredible phone. Imagine what it would be like with the amount of development that the Nexus or even the Evo 3d has? It's kinda sad that this phone doesn't have that much popularity with more developers. It's a better phone all around than the Nexus or Evo 3d.

Actually I can't say that I won't buy a phone again without looking at the development because I do plan on getting the Note 2 at launch. The tough part is gonna be figuring out which version to get. It's probably gonna be like the sgs3. Some of the versions have more development than the others.

I would actually prefer looking at how to merge some WebOS features into Android, rather than port the OS over without a halfway decent app store .

True story. I wonder if we'll start to see Webdroid or AndrOS hybrid-ports in the next couple of years.

Where to next?

I don't have an upgrade yet, but as the date draws nearer (December) I really start looking at what is coming out between now and then, and I must say I'm not feeling particularly confident about any given upgrade path.
If it's true the next Nexus will be Nexus Optimus based off the Optimus G I'd probably consider the Optimus G since having identical hardware to the galaxy S worked many wonders for the captivate.
Outside of that, the Xperia Tl looks like a pretty great device if it gets enough support to see decent long-lived dev support.
So, what upcoming phone do you think will have the best dev support? I would really like to keep getting updates long after the manufacturer officially drops support.. and Even if it's only 400$, I probably will skip the nexus since 16 gigs isn't enough without expandable memory storage..
Same. I also have an upgrade due this December and the new phones on at&t aren't interesting. I would've gone to the one x but their at&t version has ran into a wall because of a recent update that locked the boot loaders down, hard. (At&t officially does not support unlocked boot loaders for it). So, the Cappy is still moving forward

I'm cautiously optimistic about both the Xperia TL and the Optimus G.
I know that back mfr support can ruin otherwise great phones.. both in terms of upgrades and devs ability to make custom roms.. So I'll be looking anxiously at the LG Optimus. If the One x+ keeps the 64 gb of storage or even just 32gb of storage I would seriously consider it too assuming the dev support was adequate.

I am really worried the Note 2 will be far to big for my taste. The 4.7" phones already seem *huge* to have to stick in my pocket. Aside from that I'd be worried about the quad core exynos processsors which I hear make it hard to cook up custom Roms.

Sweet, I might consider that too. I'm not feeling the galaxy s3 for at&t at all and HTC one x is stuck on a rut with that 2.20 update.

LG Optimus G looks very promising. I love its hardware design (on the same level with HTC one x or better, IMO), that quadcore Qualcomm s4 processor, and the screen is fantastic. I wish At&t included the 13 mp camera. But then again all cellphone cameras will never be perfect.

I want a decent camera but, honestly my absolute biggest concern is long term dev support. I wish there was an environment more "open" to dev with carriers. I understand they don't want to have to deal with people bricking their phones.. At the same time "voided warranty" scares off most people I talk to about custom roms in the first place.. So I don't think they are really gaining anything by locking down phones.. People either care about the warranty or they don't.

Well I'm guessing it's because carriers want you to buy a new phone for every upgrade date to make $$$ so they lock boot loaders (of course, that assumption could be false). For long term development support I will buy an international Samsung galaxy s_ device or a nexus.

Unfortunately, I'm kinda tired of the SAMOLED displays.
As far as why they do it, forcing customers to buy new phones is a pretty horrible reason TBH.
There are far too many people who are angry at manufacturers for failing to update fast enough. When you remove their ability to install their own update, you're just giving them a reason to find another product.

Me too, which is why I'm going to the One X or Nexus 4. I have a Nexus 7 and support is good. But I don't think any phone out there will be better than my captivate, development wise.

Haha, yup that's a good point. I'm glad that the cappy was my first android device and is/was filled with plenty of developers to support it. I'm kind of sad to leave it this December, TBH.

I left my Cappy last October after the USB port died and I got tired of switching out batteries to use it for the SGS II. My SGS II just had an unfortunate accident involving water, so I pulled out my trusty Cappy which I could not part with since it was my 1st Android device. Thank god for all of the awesome development that has and continues to unfold for this device. I am on Jelly Bean 4.1.2 and its like I never left. I do not know how much longer I am going to use it (Nexus 4 looks tempting), but it continues to be an amazing phone that I will continue to go back to whenever other phones fail on me.
Kind of off topic but I really wanted to say how much of an awesome phone this is. Props to all of you who kept it for a full two years! :good:

Nexus 4 price is hard to resist, lack of storage and lte is unfortunate but can't beat 350 for a top of the line device. And it's a nexus.
I'd consider the nexus 4 if I didn't have the nexus 7 already
Might as well go with the school of fish since the galaxy s 3 is $99 now at select stores. Cant beat that price with all the features it has. But you gotta admit the HTC one x is a nice looking phone, and dare I say, and to which nobody has mentioned yet, the Lumia 920 (in red) *gasp*

One thing im wondering as I look at the nexus 4 is that there are 3 buttons back, home and multi task (which is long press home for us) one of the things i love is the dedicated options or settings key, anyone have any experience moving to no options button? One (of many) things that bother me when im using an iPhone is the stupid steps you have to take to change app settings.
I'm reconsidering this phone for that reason,(although im sure XDA can give me options to remedy this issue) am i the only one who thinks a dedicated multitasking button is a waste and long press home is a fine alternative to open up another shortcut option?

+1 here. Maybe a custom ROM for the Nexus will give you the ability to do that.

Getting a Nexus is your only safe bet for long term dev support and you don't have to deal with locked bootloader and losing your warranty by unlocking it (you have no choice with Sony and HTC, because you enter your IMEI to unlock it which void your warranty, unless you do some third party unlocking method). Also for the price of the Nexus 4 and being a Nexus device, I don't see why one would get the Optimus G with locked bootloader and probably poor support, if only for the 32gb storage which is not worth it compared to all the things the Nexus offer (ie, Google updates, easy to flash, best dev support and highesst quality rom, pentaband, elitist Nexus fanboys community).

Various CyanogenMod and AOKP-based rom is capable of customizing the on screen NavBar, including for the Captivate. Try AOKP rom and look for the Navigation bar settings.

Custom ROMs allow you to change all sorts of things about the navigation bar. You can have more buttons, different buttons, even shortcuts/widgets.
Also, I can say from experience that the three button setup is better than the four button setup.
