Just a little insight from a VZW "Person"
Our Spotty 4G seems to be in a direct correlation with the iPhone/idont 5 coming out.
Ever since the first couple days after the launch of the iPhone 5 we've all experienced data drops, spotty 4G and sometimes almost an unbelievably long time stuck in 3G.
I have a GS3 and fortunately a folder with a bunch of different "modems/radios" however, until I found what "modem" (as they call it for the sammys) worked best, I was just like you Tbolt peeps. Angry as all hell that the iPhone came out with LTE and causing these issues. Especially when half or more of the people that got it, don't even know what real 4G is and they're raining on our parade!
I get to listen to it every day now from my GF. Her Tbolt that I hooked up and gave her was effing amazing three weeks ago. Now... it just drops and hangs data way more than my GS3.
That's why I got on XDA tonight. To see if there were any new radios (as us HTC people call em) out and about. No luck thus far, but I wanted to share some knowledge with the community as to the cause of all this mess. Thanks a lot Apple!
Your over popular smartphone for dumb people is not only an over rated joke of a phone for sheeple, but its taking connectivity away from our awesome (slightly older 4G phones) that most likely won't be getting any more radio updates. This is probably why my GS3 isn't too bad right now (knock on wood) because of the newer modems still coming out.
Ever get double texts or have friends with really freaking slow 3G Droids??
We can thank the idont 4 and 4s for that as well. They over saturated the 3G market which Verizon is not putting another DIME into. So unfortunately Tbolt users and other "older pioneer 4G devices", looks like unless there are new radio leaks, we're kinda SOL.
So there you have it...
Now find that friend of yours that has an idont 5 and thank them for stepping on our toes and our precious 4G on the pioneer phones.
Sent from my galaxy tab 2 tethered to my GS3 with great 4G while watching my gf's Tbolt drop and regain signal :/
The reason at&t dropped unlimited so fast is because they saturated the market with the iPhone3 and 3gs which destroyed their bandwidth. When the 4 and 4s came out it became even worse. I have tired calling Verizon almost since launch day only trying to get a new sim and I can't even get through.

I've been considering reactivating my Nexus One or G2 with T-Mobile now that they offer unlimited data too. I think its a blessing that they don't have the iPhone. Less phones means less stress on their network. At least most iPhone 5 users don't have unlimited data.

I bet it won't be long before they get it too. Hell sprint almost bankrupted itself just to get it. They paid apple almost $2billion dollars to get it.

Considering the drops occurred long before VZW had an LTE-capable iPhone, I'd be skeptical of any technical information you receive from this "person".

I AM the "person" I wasnt trying to throw myself out there about such a hot/negative topic that involved my career. I'll just go with its "free speech" and I deal with this all day, everyday and explain this to my customers and clients faces all the time.
If you read the whole post, data drops did happen before the iPhone 5, but clearly since the launch, its gotten rediculous. The type of phone you have, your location and the amount of support the manufacturer puts out there with OTA radio updates etc.. greatly matters as well.
I'm not getting more in depth about this topic than I already have. The info is in the writing.
Just a little knowledge for the masses rather than me explaining this to about 7-12 people everyday I work.

This has been happening since June 2012 to both the Thunderbolts on my account. Sim cards have been replaced and one phone was replaced. Nothing has fixed it. There have been times in the past where i thought i fixed the issue, but those turned out to be only temporary. Verizon's network has become complete garbage IMO. I've had an open ticket for this issue for eight weeks now. Everytime I call I'm told I will just have to wait longer for it to be resolved. I'm seriously considering cancelling all six of my lines soon.

Hey everybody ive been thinkn bout switchn to the nexus s 4g, i currently have the thunderbolt for verizon. i know i have to switch to sprint and thats not a problem. the questions i have is should i take the plunge? hows sprints coverage? or should i just wait for the next nexus to come out? and can you all share your pros and cons of your device? thank you all in advance.
I dont have Sprint nor a Nexus s 4g, but I do have a Nexus s on T-Mobile. This is the best phone I've ever owned ... I haven't had any problems with it. Plus stock Android is amazing. I know HTC sense UI has it's pros and its cons but I take stock Android anyday.

Since I've never used a Thunderbolt, you'll have to take the following with a grain of salt. First, Verizon's coverage is much better than Sprint's coverage. Sprint's 'nationwide' coverage has next to no native coverage in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nevada. Other areas are more sparse than Verizon as well. However, Sprint has free roaming with 3G speeds (assuming Verizon has 3G in that area). You won't get Sprint services like Sprint Navigation, TV, etc. while roaming (at least I don't think you do).
I had the nexus s 4g for about a month, but ultimately returned it. The only reason I returned it was that I did not have a signal at my workplace. My previous phones have all had pretty poor signal at my work, but the nexus was a just a little worse (enough that it wouldn't receive the majority of calls/text, whereas my older phones would get most of them). The coverage is bad there since it's basically a concrete block and I had no problems anywhere else with the nexus s. The minor things were creaky battery cover (probably just on mine and could have been fixed with a new cover) and no led notification light.
The things I liked were good battery life (even with poor signal at my work), standard google with no sprint branding at all, native hotspot feature works like google intended it to work, the size was really nice, amoled screen looked very good, and the phone was very fast in everything I did. It was also very easy to root and get superuser on (other than needing to move some of the tools in android sdk from 'platform-tools' to 'tools').
They're making a radio update. Should've waited.

The only thing you might miss is Verizons network. Me and mikeyinid both switched from the Thunderbolt and I can personally say it was the best decision I have made.

Look up the sprint map about coverage in the other hand I'll go with the nexus man stock android blows out of the water in speed , I had an evo (thunderbolt brother , practicly with a few updates ) LTE is great tho (where it works )
Ok so I had and Evo with CM7 stable but still some how had bugs , on nexus s I don't have any bugs and I don't even miss 720 p video recording , and I'm happy that I'm getting upsates straight from google , the evo got gingerbread 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 is out and I bet that's probably the last update for evo so not gtalk video chat ... btw I'm in las vegas and I switch from verizon to sprint cheaper service and in my already better service most of the time

Like mbh87 said, we both came to the NS4G from the Bolt, and while I do miss the awesome service, the Nexus makes it worth it. I have no regrets switching. If your running CM on your bolt then the switch is a no brainer Not to mention your gonna save money with sprint. Don't let them talk you into a big plan. The 69 + 10 dollar for wimax is unlimited mobile to mobile on any network... Very good deal.

hey, i was just wondering, do you have a link to that info? i haven't heard of anything about it, but would be awesome if they did.
to the op, verizon's always gonna have better general coverage than sprint, but if your area has good sprint coverage then it shouldnt really be a problem. also sprint is always gonna be generally cheaper than verizon (not to mention they'll give you a $125 bill credit if you port your verizon number over to the nexus before the end of this month).
As far as the nexus s 4g goes, man its smooth like butter the combination of hardware/software has given me almost zero lag in the UI. but your best bet is to just go test it out at the store.
and the nexus 3, shoot thats a tough call. i was gonna wait for it and not get the ns4g on contract, but im such a big fan of the nexus that im just gonna buy the nexus 3 outright when it comes out and sell this one or possibly keep both (i love it that much).
Thanks for all the info guys! and im goin to be gettn my nexus s 4g SOON as i get rid of this bolt, yous swayed me with all the good reviews! then i took the advice of goin to play with it hands on and man its crazy smooth and fast and thats even without bn rooted and oc'd, man i can only imagine. thank you all for bn cool enuff to help a brotha out, i shall be hangn out with yous very soon.

The main advantages the nexus s has over the thunderbolt is the cpu and gpu, and screen of course.

Well considering sprint has the largest voice coverage in the US, switching to Sprint isn't a bad way to go if you are looking for good voice coverage.
Verizon has better 3G coverage though, and better 4G coverage.
Overall, my only issue with the nexus s 4g (vs. my old evo) is the wifi antenna is not as good. While the bars jump around much more than the evo, I get similar performance/coverage.
If fast data speeds are very important to you, verizon is probably a better bet. If you just need data connection to grab emails, use google navigation, etc, sprint works great.
My job decided to get me a company phone and start paying the bill, but only problem is, they use sprint. So, I had them get me the new evo 3d. I've always been a fan of t mobile and their network, but hey, I'm saving 100a month. Well, got my new phone setup, and must say, sprint is a lot slower than t mobile is, and the phone is kind of a let down. The 3d is cool, but I can't stand sense at all. On Sprint, I couldn't even stream Pandora at my gym! I can't wait for the Hercules. Its pretty much a Infuse with a dual core CPU. Nobody knows for sure which dual core it will be but I've seen speculation that it will be a Qualcomm. Then again, everyone speculated everyone's SGSII to look the same since we saw cases on a website but we all know that speculation was wrong since ATT'S is a slider. Hell, the Hercules might not eveb have a 4.5 inch screen at this point since everyone was totally wrong on saying ATT, Verizon and Sprints would be the same form factor as the European version.

Lol yea I know how it goes, its crazy down there and my buddy who lives in Georgia is on sprint as well, he's been having same issues as me for the past few months. During off hours I could get 2mbps down some places, while still not get any data downtown Denver.... 4g is always one bar Max, unless I am at my store, and it literally drops signal like no other, no point in even wasting my battery on keeping my wimax antenna on... even if I do get 2mbps its still way slow compared to T-Mobile, ping of 300 really does make it seem even slower as well.
I went to the gym tonight and got my buddy there to download speed test on his g2, was during peak hours. He got 6mbps down while I couldn't even open Facebook lol.

Since we have a locked bootloader our version probably isn't getting an official CM release, so development on that front has been slower than on the other variants. The available pre-alphas work well (albeit with a substantially longer boot time) but have major issues with data and thinking your phone number is unknown upon reboot. This results in being unable to send MMS.
I'm personally waiting for things to become a little more stable before I dive in, but others already have. Since the dreaded IMEI issue has a fix I can recommend at least checking it out. Google Now is pretty nice.

What made you change to Verizon? Just curious lol. I think at&t has the best selection when it comes to smartphones.
I use to be on at&t also. Too many dropped calls and at that time I was there, no good smartphones besides the iPhone.
Service and customer service wise Verizon is the best out of at&t, Sprint, and T-Mobile in my experience. But I hate Verizon for locking down these boot loaders!! I currently have a RAZR Maxx with a locked boot loader too. It sucks for us folks that like to try different roms and kernals.

Well I barely was able to make a phone call at my house and when I was able to get thru it would drop 4-5 times. Data was a joke. Every where I go I really dont have good speeds. And the data speeds fluctuated too much. And considering Verizon got lte in my area it was a no-brainer for me to switch. Cost me over $500 in etf, but I could care less I'm so freaking happy with Verizon. Especially since lte is 30 mbps at my house. It's a downgrade to use my WiFi lol.

Verizon is a beast! at&t gave me slow data and too many dropped calls so I don't see why they're getting all the tight phones! Or maybe Verizon is just picky with what they want in their selection.

What's up One X peeps? I am currently with Sprint on a Galaxy S2 in the Bristol, Tn area. Not so great of service and it is only 3g coverage for Sprint here so far(no plans in the future to add LTE here as far as I know...which is stupid because the race track is sponsored by Sprint and yet they have the worst service in the area duhuh..)...aaanyway, I am considering AT&T because I can pay a little extra and have 4g almost anywhere I go in the Tri Cities. So I am torn between the S3 and the One X. I have had Sense phones and touchwiz phones so I am really asking if anyone would care to share what they love about their One X and why they chose it over the S3. They are both remarkable but I am honestly leaning toward the One X because it is different in an appealing kind of way. I am just an average user other than rooting every phone I get my hands on. Browsing, texting, listening to music with headphones, email, etc. I had a Nexus S 4G before the S2 and a Hero before that. I have loved all of my phones but I kind of want something different right now. It also helps that the One X is on sale for $99 until September.
Funny you mentioned the race track, I'm right by Pocono and there is no lte either lol, oh wait there's no service at all by the SPRINT sponsored race track! Lolol. So glad I'm on att now

DO IT. I was with Sprint for 5 years, and ever since they got the iPhone my 3G speeds were simply atrocious. How good is having unlimited data when you're pulling 0.5mbps down(on a good day)? And I'm in a network vision completed area! The difference really is night and day, and so damn worth it.
Also, battery life on the One X with LTE is better than my EVO 4G, EVO 3D and Galaxy Nexus ever had on 3G... TIMES TWO. I've left my phone unplugged for eight hours when going to bed, to wake up and find out it only used 2% battery. ON LTE.
There really is no contest here. It's even worth paying an ETF. I sold my (mint condition) Galaxy Nexus on ebay for $350 and paid my ETF with that.
Good luck!
I was a Sprint customer for a decade and finally got fed up with their data speeds. What's the point of unlimited data if you can't even use it? After a brief trial with Verizon, I made the move to AT&T in January and couldn't be happier. The HOX is an absolute beast of a phone and coupled with AT&T's blazing LTE speeds (and even their fast-enough HSPA+ when LTE isn't available) it's pretty much unstoppable. I had heard horror stories about AT&T's customer service before coming over here but my experience with them has been nothing but positive, and I have tested the patience of more than a handful of AT&T reps since making the move. They are friendly, somewhat knowledgeable, they do try to help as best they can, and best of all- they are incredibly easy to manipulate. Do it man, you'll be glad you did.
The main reason I left sprint was due to the horrible 3G speeds. You know how bad it feels to see buffering every 5 seconds on sprint watching youtube? The slowest speed I've got on ATT was 6mbps, thats more than enough for anything I need to do. Sprint, I was barely able to do 0.5mpbs with full bars, pathetic.
Good bye Sprint, You won't ever see me again. I'm paying $10 more a month, but its we'll worth it.
Yeah, I am thinking it is going to be worth the transfer. It doesnt seem too crazy to get root and unlock the bootloader from what I have read so I am sure I can manage. The only work arpund I will have to find is the storage but dropbox is offering the 25gb space still if I am not mistaken.

The latest firmware version (2.20) is not currently rootable, although its being worked on. No root also means no bootloader unlock. It seems that based on reports here, a lot of newly purchased One X's have 2.20 pre-installed. Maybe you can find a store with some older stock (1.73 and 1.85 are okay). But if you need root and unlocked BL right now, be aware when buying.
Also, I think AT&T stopped supporting the Dropbox promotion a while ago.
I'd recommend the secondary market vs buying a new one at this point.
Att gave me a $175 trade on my Epic 4G touch when I came from sprint a month ago...best decision I made in a long time.

come on over! I honestly don't know how people put up with Sprint's data speeds. Also, I don't have any complaints with AT&T except I'm patiently waiting for LTE in Denver (HSPA+ is good enough, but why put up with "good enough" ). I've been with the company since their Cingular days and won't be going anywhere for a while (unless I jump over to Straight Talk to save some $$)
The S3 has better hardware specs but the HOX is better looking.
Basically it comes down to sd card/more ram/removable battery vs better screen and build quality.
IMO the S3 is ugly as sin, with a dated, pedestrian design (seriously, a physical home button?). But some people like it.
If you're a power user you may be better off with the S3 because of the better multitasking (more ram) and storage space. If looks and design matter to you, go with the HOX.
I came from iOS, so the sd card slot and battery were not really a big deal, while the design was.
AT&T's coverage is not as big as Verizon's but the data speeds are nice. Their customer service has always been pretty good on most issues (exceptions being the various things they like to lock down--but Verizon has always been far worse about that anyway).

U know how ppl who have sprint deal with the horrid speeds? by never experiencing good speeds..lol..I've never saw over a mb/s unless on my airave or WiFi....I don't even attempt doing stuff when I'm out and about that requires more than minimal bandwidth..but I'm in the early 2nd round of network vision so hopefully that will change ..if 6mb/s is slow for you then I'm jealous..can't imagine u need much more than that for anything..YouTube app still buffers for me on WiFi when playing hd content..and its 20 down..anyone else have that issue ?

The LTE service that I get is so fast, there is ZERO difference from WiFi, and can even be faster in some cases. When I start watching a video on youtube and switch to HD, it starts playing immediately. I can't even begin to explain how much faster it is compared to even Sprint's solid WiMAX service here in Boston.
Speaking of WiMAX, LTE on AT&T runs at 700mhz, so LTE signals penetrate buildings even better than 3G and voice if you can believe it. I remember with WiMAX my signal would drop if I stepped over a shadow.
And while I've seen bursts of up to 60mbps(I kid you not), It's the insanely low ping times(about 30ms) that make you feel like you're using WiFi.
I think I will go for it. It will cost probably $10-20 mpre a month because pf the discpunt I get with Sprint through my bank...but again, I am tired of waiting for service and having to constantly roam with roamcontrol just to make a phone call in my apartment. I will try to get time to give more thanks later. I believe I talked myself into it earlier today. Design and feel mean a lot to me. And if those Apple fanbois are happy with no removable battery or sd card then I can manage too lol. Thank you all for your input!

Hey guys. I'm not new to android. I've had an android phone for over 3 years. I was wwith Sprint for 13 years, but got tired of there horrible and inconsistent network. The unlimited data I was getting was at home when I was connected to my WiFi.
Sitting in my living room with Sprint talking on my E4GT was was unbearable. If I wanted to talk I had to use my land line. I'm amazed at the speed and sound quality since switching to Verizon. I'll be lurking in two weeks and looking to root my white S3.

Welcome. You will find both joy and pain in your experience here, but don't worry, the pain is only one payment each month.
I'm new here too. I've been with sprint for the past ten years and finally switched to Verizon as well. Looking forward to the developers over here

Welcome, Sprint refugee here too, amazed at the network quality, and you'll find a lot of ex-Sprint folks have switched over to the red side as well. Don't let "cost" warnings scare ya, not that bad really especially if you use wifi at home. Unless you use a boat load of data you'll find the cost comparable. I share 4gb with my wife and find the bill maybe ten bucks higher a month. Well worth it for me to have no dropped calls and a blazing fast network. It will be interesting to see if Sprint lives up to their LTE promises better than the wimax effort and keeps it unlimited. If so maybe I'll go back after this contact is over if for nothing else their phone selection. Anyway welcome.
Wow, it's amazing all the converts from Sprint. I think I stuck with them because the unlimited data, but only one time did I go over 1gb. I would turn in WiFi as soon as I got home. My question is how does Verizon calculate data? I've had this phone for only 24 hours and the my Verizon app says I've used 103mb of data. How can that be, I did all my updates at home on my WiFi?

I am an ex sprint user as well. I git all the same high price warnings. No issue for me it's actually 30 bucks a month cheaper. And if your coming from sprint the data speeds will make you cream lol. I got the 4 gig plan and have yet to clear 2 gigs. Over all I'm very very very happy.

I'm another Sprint user (until Friday) jumping over to Verizon. During my Internet speed tests, I never saw a number in front of the decimal point... Now I'm supposed to get TWO DIGIT numbers in front of the decimal point? Incredible.
I hate Sprint so much. I will miss my phone, but the GSIII will make up for that quickly I bet.

I just moved over today as well and so far I'm loving it. Although I get some weird issues indoors, like at target. It basically loses all service.

Same deal with me. Came from Sprint. Service is awesome so far, the prices are ridiculous though. Probably going to look to get on my parents family plan actually. The individual ones are terrible.
yup, i'm a switcher to big red. Sprint had terrible data speeds, and barely any service indoors.
Verizon is where its at in terms of network coverage and data service.
I don't understand the price complaints either. These new shared plans are terrific. I used to look at Verizon and it would cost like 30 more per month for them. Now it will cost me $2 more than Sprint a month! No that's not a typo either. My bill with Sprint (my wife and I) was 128 plus tax. With Verizon, sharing 4 GB, it'll be $130 a month plus tax (both prices include my employee discount). Awesome switch! Now to get out of that ETF... I'm working on that now, haha.

I switched from Sprint also <.< I couldn't deal with the dialup speeds I was getting on my S2
I swapped from sprint as well I couldn't deal with the .05 dl speeds but I am lucky I got 2 unlimited LTE plans from a friend so I'm still good to go on data.
I switched from Sprint to get my rezound previously. I do not miss sprint whatsoever.
80 a month for my big red plan with actual unlimited good speeds.

thought I was going to be the sore thumb!
