NATIVE Ubuntu. Will It work? - Asus Transformer TF700

Ubuntu on Transformer TF201
Here you go. My question is. Will this instruction work on TF700? Please test it or tell me. I really want ubuntu on my Transformer.

No this will not work. The hardware on the TF201 is not the same as the hardware on the TF700T. I am working on getting Ubuntu working on TF700.

I am working on finding a way to get dual boot working, I am mostly in the research/brain stroming stage. The kernel and compile part wont be that tough. WE can use the same OS as for the TF201 for the most part with a different kernel and settings.

I'd love to see native Ubuntu or xubuntu. Something that will run well. I love Linux.

I wish I can help in this development, I have no knowledge in ROM development, or hardware development only in software development. If I can find resources I am willing to spend my spare times on this starting from scratch.

anyone who wants to help can easily find it here.

I love the work that comes out from the Android community of developers, I just got a TF700 and I'm looking for a Ubuntu boot option as well. I'm not good at coding but am more than willing to donate to the cause to get some sort of dual boot option for this device.

I am working on getting a second device so I can update to Jelly bean boot loader and test everything including ubuntu. Would love to be able to get a second device.

Hi Guys
Do we know if there has been any progress on this? I am extreamely interested in getting an Ubuntu dual boot on my TF700 and with the hardware it should be more than capable......
Do we have any idea of timelines etc? I may be willing to give some financial contribution to the person that can get this up and running and stable in a reasonably short timescale....
Thanks

I'm tired of JB. I have a Dell Duo running Fedora 17 and it rocks compared to my Infinity with JB. I need Linux on this thing.

Ubuntu Ported To The Nexus 7
1GB of RAM, a quad-core Tegra 3 SoC from Nvidia, Wi-Fi and a 7-inch screen
http://techie-buzz.com/mobile-news/ubuntu-ported-to-the-nexus-7.html
"The video above is pretty short (21 seconds) but shows the Nexus 7 running Ubuntu with Unity desktop interface without any issues.
Canonical will be unveiling more information about Ubuntu for the Nexus 7 at its upcoming Ubuntu Developer Summit in Copenhagen to be held later this year."
Imagine having the option to run UUD by years end on the tf700.
How many would switch to it? Certainly tempting.

Keeping my fingers crossed that someone gets this sorted for the Tf700.
As it is now I feel the power of the pad is poorly utilized with nothing but JB.
Right now I wish I had waited for a Windows pad...
Hope it will become more than an e-book and e-mail reader for me in the future..

Native?
Probably soon.
In the meantime, I installed chrooted debian.
Other than the fact that most programs don't work, it runs like a charm.

I saw a video of plugging a phone into a tv or monitor and having it then switch to ubuntu. This is what I would LOVE to have with my infinity. I would like the idea of it being a normal android tablet, but then when I slide it into the dock it becomes a linux netbook. I just bought the dock today so just dreaming at this moment lol. I haven't even rooted my infinity yet, unsure if I want to or wait until ubuntu option is there. Doesn't seem to be many good ROMs out there yet.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to try any of this on my own, but I'm willing to help out in any way I can.

[DEV] Tiamat Kernel

Anyone have an idea how hard it would be to port this tiamat kernel over to Transformer? built for XOOM and others, and the XOOM hardware is near identical right? Just a thought, this thread has the info and link to the github of the sources.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978013
I posted in the thread if he could develop for us and everyone yelled me. I thought it'd be easy too. But I agree. I hope someone could port this because this kernel seems amazing.

Yeah, I was going to PM him, but he has PMs disabled, and I wasn't going to post in the thread because people hate that, me included. There is nothing more annoying in a thread when someone else comes in asking to do this all to their device. While this is a situation where at least the device internals are pretty similar, still not a polite thing to do. The github of his work should be enough for any dev here to port the work over pretty easily I'd think. We'll see though.

The hardware is fairly similar but they are based on two completely different OEM boards. Transformer=Ventana, Xoom=Stingray.
The Tiamat kernel modificationc could possibly be ported to the transformer kernel, but it isn't as straight forward and simple as you might think.
definitely would be sweet.. dual 1.6GHZ sounds pretty good
Hopefully we get some support soon.. I wish I knew how to do this stuff.
I'm not sure what it is but the forum for the Eee pad seem a bit dead tbh, is it just because of limited stock?

I miss IRC.
And I hope we get some development on this soon. It'd be a shame to see people sticking to products like the xoom, just because the TF is so limited in its availability. We need availability to pick up for this product.

Its not limited in just availability, its limited in 'mod-ability'.. It could just be the product maker following the guidelines for that particular board and making use of 'security' features specific to that board, but its still a pain in the ass. Work was put in to make the end user work harder to be able to customize.
I have the gtab (harmony), Xoom (stingray) , and eeepad (ventana). The gtab is the fastest, the easiest to mod, the hardest to brick.. and the heaviest with the worst screen. The eeepad is the slowest, the worst to mod and the lightest.. guess what .. best screen.
I am typing this on the gtab tho.. and I just got the eeepad today. It'll probably collect dust. Tried to play south park (originally avi/xvid/mp3) converted/muxed to mp4/xvid/aac and the Asus would play it... but volume control was not working it was full blast or mute. My gtab plays xvid avi/mp3 without a hiccup. Any other format I can throw at it too (sans multichannel audio and high profile h264). Its really surprising how far this has come. Since its oc'd every which way, it makes everything else seem very very slow. Only thing I haven't been able to get oc'd yet is emc.
Getting the ability and the clocks setup for the Asus was a breeze. Configuring/adjusting /making sense of all the bits and pieces of dvfs was not. speedo_id is a new one to me, and that seems to be the value that is read from fuse data and locks down max clocks
You guys got Blades and Netarchy on the case. You don't need me lol. I would LOVE to have Netarchy working on stingray.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

It seems Jelly Bean is rollin' out soon :fingers-crossed: When would Infinity receive this version? Or should we wait and get the Infinity already installed with this version?

nice. guess i will hold on to my xoom for a while, but im still getting the infinity.
I personally refused to hold my breath and got the Infinity yesterday (me = lucky bastard). Here in Holland, only the 64 GB version will be released initially, by the way.
I don't know what the splendid chefs in here will come up with, but based on my experiences with my SGS2 and all the custom ROMs I've tried on it, I'd prefer most of their cuisine to ASUS' mainstream cooking any day. I like the stock ROM enough to let it be for a while, but I'm going to root it this afternoon, if possible. I need my TB...
I can wait too get one. I will have to root it as soon as possible. I can't live without TB. It is so much easier than waiting on Google or reinstalling manually

Hi dskw, sorry for not replying that quickly. I must've missed your reply.
I used the process referenced in this thread: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1706588
Make sure you have killed off Asus Sync (under WIndows, CTRL-ALT-DEL and End Process). It will interfere to the point of plain inhibition. ' Ot of the box, I couldn't get root acces, but I installed Superuser and Busybox from the Play Store and all was fine. Other than that, all went smoothly for me. Have been running root now for a few days, so at least it is effective and stable.
ADDITION: make sure to try out the sio scheduler swap-out as well. It is one of the main reasons to root the TF700 at the moment, since it does make a (slight) improvement on throughput overall. I will try and find the reference for that procedure as well and post it here, but I'm on a busy train now and people are starting to look at me with this funny look on their faces. :S

But the scheduler swap-out is indeed interesting!

I called Best Buy about two weeks ago to inquire about preorder and the lady started rattling off the specs as she saw them on the screen in front of her. Everything sounded on point so I feel like I can trust the accuracy of her information. What caught my attention was when she said "Jelly Bean". I stopped her and said "Wait, what?". She explained that her info read that the 700 was supposed to have ICS but had "Just changed, and now it's showing Android Jelly Bean for this tablet when it goes on sale". She was sure of this and even doublechecked her data to confirm.
We might see a very welcome update early next week, folks. I wouldn't be surprised.

TF700T a Bit Laggy....Apps to Blame?

Hey guys. Just got the Infinity. Physically the device is great. Love it. Noticed after loading a couple of apps (not many) that the tablet seems a bit laggy going from program to program and screen to screen. And even some app crashes. Ran pretty smooth on initial use as they always do. It shouldn't be laggy at all with the specs. Could I have an app that's not written for a tablet causing a problem? Memory issue? Or anyway to check that this thing is running like it should? I would think it would be smooth as glass. Not overly concerned but just a bit. I've only had it for two days so just generating some dialog. I hate to jump to a "return it" attitude as the next one I get may have another issue or do the same thing.
Also it seems most programs aren't written yet to see the "microSD" card and treat the internal "scdard" as an external. Went through this with my Galaxy S3. Here we go again!
no lag on mines. i downloaded a couple of torrents last night and still was able to do other things without hiccups.

You're probably new to this forum?
This is a known I/O issue on this device. Everyone has it, one way or another.
Currently there are speculations that it is due to SW and not HW, so it will be fixed eventually.
Try turning off wi-fi or wait for some time for the tablet to settle down after heavy downloading and installing.
It should get better.
But, as soon as you are downloading something or copying and such ... and when you try to do other things in parallel ... the tablet will get laggy again.

Yes i am new to this device and this section of the forum. Thanks for the info. Glad to know it's probably SW and not hardware as this is frustrating. Is fast then bogs down quick. Maybe a custom ROM to fix this soon.

Tried the tablet the whole day with new apps, loading archives, extracted 600mb while watching youtube in HD, no problems yet. But I only have a few apps installed yet.
Only thing I saw is when the tablet switches from landscape to portrait, the wallpaper jumps from the left side to the right and gets then finally centered. A bit annoying.

Glad to hear (sorta) that it's happening to others as it denotes a software issue and not hardware. Hard to tell sometimes. I would certainly want to return it if there was a memory or CPU issue but obviously don't want to go through that hassle if I don't have to. Went up to BB today and they didn't have the Infinity but did have a Prime. The Prime was fast and I asked the salesguy (who claimed to know all about the tablets) to see if mine seemed laggy to him. He said it looked great but it also was not connected to wifi. It did seem to run faster without wifi. Starting to lead me to believe that the radio firmware is not perfected and when connected or connected to a poor wifi source it slows.
When I got my Galaxy S3 it was a little laggy even with a custom ROM until I connected in anther state to LTE and the phone was smooth as butter. Wifi performance does seem to affect the entire use of the phone/tablets quite a bit.

Maybe JB will fix some of this. It's supposed to be smooth. That is whenever we get it.
Prime users have been reporting big improvement with JB. Since ASUS likes to use the same NAND across all its tablets, it should help us out as well.

The hardware seems to be rock solid, JB or just some updates will likely iron out a vast majority of it's problems. Keep in mind we're all early adopters, these sorts of things are to be expected. Fayetteville is...well it's Fayetteville.

I just got the device so I need to start reading up on rooting and doing some tweaks. I guess it's a good time to root it. If there are problems I am still within my time to return it.
The new firmware should solve a lot of these: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1800593&page=2

Where are they getting this update? I'm currently on US 9.4.5.21 and there is no OTA update and the latest on Asus' site is 9.4.5.22
Try updating to .22 manually and then check for OTA updates in the system settings.

[REQUEST] Ubuntu for Tablets, port it to Nook HD/HD+

Hi,
Sorry if this wasn't posted in the correct location but I was hoping someone here could port "Ubuntu Touch" to Nook HD and HD +. According to their official porting page, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting, Ubuntu Touch is a heavy modded fork of CM10.1, should be easier to get the kernel working in this case. Would be fantasic to see a more familar looking OS on my tablet.
Thank you in advance
I would be curious to see this as well. I've heard good things about it and would enjoy taking it for a spin.
Not sure if there's any interest in it by dev's though.

It might be possible to even dual-boot it off an sd card but at this time I am not sure. My best guess is there is a waiting period to see if the internals of the nook can be unlocked first, then you may see a surge in activity for these very types of requests.

This could be awesome - not sure about the support, but since CM10 is available, it shouldn't be that hard?

Seems he left all of us hanging, anyone want to pick this project up?

No, it's not dead. I have been on vacation for the last week, and was unsuccessful in getting a flipped build working before I left. I've been fairly busy with work and plans for this trip and the family lately. Anyone who wants to attempt building is (obviously) free to do so, there are many people more talented than me out there I will however continue to work on this as well as the build for the HD+ (and presumably the HD).

The above is from his thread, a quick reply to my message, seems he is still around.

Ubuntu

Just out of curiosity, as far as I know this device is capable to run ubuntu (I mean it runs jelly bean, so it can run ubuntu). Here is the question (as a person who has no clue about programming) is it possible to port it, and is anyone onto it?

I'm sure it's possible but as far as this device goes, I've not heard a thing.
I noticed on silverl's github he has some stuff on there related to it. Knowing him he will get it done. Also I have seen it on other devices and it is difficult to port. Cant just copy and paste with it. You have to have cm and then flash a ubuntu package on top of it. I heard there is no apps for it yet either.

Yeah its mostly just a developer preview. We have it on the Nexus 4 and have nightly builds or whatever but its useless as it sits now

I'm a SW dev who's been sponging of the android dev efforts of others for quite some time now (sorry I don't have time to contribute myself!) - the Ubuntu Touch project is quite interesting to me, and I hope to eventually free up some time to contribue. I'm surprised to see it coming, in whatever form, to the DS though :good:
