Bloat - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I just got root on my brand new one x! Is there a list of which bloat apps i can freeze/disable/uninstall? I want to remove any possible battery drainers. I havent got the courage to try to unlock my bootloader lol but maybe later
Also is there any way to disable AT&T's update thing, i dont want to lose root by updating. Do i just disable "updater"?

yes, its located in the search box

found the bloat list but does anyone know if i can disable "updater" and if that will stop the AT&T OTA notification

Unlock bootloader and install recovery, flash a ROM. This will take care of both the bloat and the at&t update. The update will happen if you don't do something other than turn off the phone

not worth debloating stock AT&T rom. just flash a custom rom.

FALSE ! the stock rom is fine once debloated !

on the stock rom the deal breaker for me was that you can't remove HtcLinkify and no Quick Settings, Advanced Power Menu, 100% Battery Mod.
I attached a possibly hard to understand .txt documenting the changes and notes i took for my 2.20 debloating.

Flashed viper and never been more happy

HTCSwnsation, how to clear it of bloatware?

Hello,
How are you?
So, I have my new sensation. So far, I'm pretty happy with the phone.
The only thing is that it came with some apps I don't want but can't remove.
Said apps like vodafone music, 360 shop, Tetris trial, dice, etc...
I would really like to clear my phone of said apps.
I don't want to install custom ROM however.
I am more than happy with the stock and would like to be able to receive future official Ota updates.
I read that titanium backup can remove said apps.
My question is of it removes them completely?
Also. for it to work, I read it needs the phone to be rooted.
So, does rooting my sensation, prevent Ota updates?
If I just root the phone and keep everything else stock will I be able to use titanium backup and still receive Ota official updates?
Please help me out.
Thank you.
Cheers!
With Titanium Backup you can remove apps, or use a Startup Manager" to prevent apps from start.
If you gain root acces you will not be able to receive OTA upgrades/updates anymore.

Yeah, I would recommend rooting and flashing a custom rom that's basically stock but it's just been slightly improved. That way it's nice and clean, and updated.

That's TMX SS 4G. Frankly, it's one of the smoothest roms I've ever used and there aren't any visual changes or anything like that. The photos are really bright for some reason, but the rom is perfect.
you really dont have to flash a custom rom if you dont want too,
you can simply gain s-off, super CID, and root and still stay with your stock rom if you wanted, and still be able to remove all the bloatware you want
but as anyone once you gain root and s-off and start looking at the Dev threads you see lot a goodies you want to try and use

Now I'm confused...
If I gain root access, can I get it free of all the bloatware, and keep everything else stock...
I also saw a few guides here, but I am also co fused with the information overload.
Can i root the phone and install a sensation xe room with 1.5ghz CPU and everything else stock?
Cheers!
If you gain root..you can just keep the ROM as is..and use Titanium Backup to freeze or delete any of the bloatwares you don't want. Freezing is probably best so you won't mess anything up. If you don't like the ROM at all...then you can flash the custom one. I pretty much just froze the programs all along, until recently when trying to check out the ICS. Back up a Nandroid of your unchanged ROM, and you can always go back to it.
Freezing your apps does not remove them.
The easiest way to remove while wanting to stay STOCK, is to simply root your phone...install Root Explorer from the Market...delete the apk files from /system/app and /data/app that you do not want...then unroot.

Just follow this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
It will probably take you about an hour to complete, depending on how experienced you are, but you do not need to complete the SuperCID portion since you are not flashing anything.
Step 5 will tell you how to revert everything once you have deleted your APKs.
FOLLOW EVERYTHING CLOSELY!!!
BTW...is there a reason you do not want to stay rooted?

Also, you can try the Temp-Root method here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1149998
This bypasses alot of steps, but provides temporary root, it might allow you to delete the APKs with Root Explorer, haven't tried, but I see no reason why it shouldn't.
Another option for me would be to root the phone and install a custom rom.
The thing is there are so many roms, I don't know which to use.
I would like a sensation xe rom, as stock as possible and bloatware free.
With the CPU at 1.5.
What's the best rom for that?
Cheers!
I think as long as you keep stock recovery you can still get ota updates.

NOT TRUE. If you are rooted, you can still get OTA. I know, I did it to my N1. It's just that it might not update if you have a custom recovery. and IF you update with an OTA, it will most probably unroot the device.
Well if you really want to stay stock, that's not a problem. Just follow the guides out there to S-OFF and root, they're very straight forward. After that, use Titanium Backup to remove them from your phone - there's really no need to freeze bloatware, you'd really only want to freeze actual system applications just in case, but I don't think removing Amazon MP3 from your phone will cause an OS crash.
Things like Facebook, Twitter, Amazon Kindle, etc etc can be safely removed from the system permanently.

If you want all the AT&T stuff off root, get titanium backup, back up the apps, and then freeze or delete.

To root or not

I just got an S3 from an upgrade. Should I root it (this isnt my first android phone i know what I will be getting into) with the jelly bean update on the rise? If I do root when the update comes out will it matter if I am rooted/ bootloader unlocked, or will the update just erase all the root.
Back when I had my Droid Bionic it DID matter if we where rooted when an update rolled around.
If is the same old story. If you root, you can customize to your heart's content and have access to new things sooner. However, you void your warranty and can't take OTAs if you root. I wouldn't chance waiting to do it later of you are going to do it, chances are Verizon will close the exploit that is currently used and you may never get the access that you have the opportunity to have right now.

If you found your way to XDA, then ROOT, ROOT, ROOT!!!!
All i used root for on my Bionic was to block ads and acess to more of the phones files. The bootlader was still locked so that is all we could do. On my Droid Eris I changed cpu speeds a ton of files. So I am debating.
Is there a way to get back to stock similar to FXZ?
Root. It adds so much more fun to owning the phone, and the variety in ROM's are great for the S3.
You can root and leave it at that to block ads and use wireless hotspot. Two main reasons I root initially. Then I get bored and go the custom roms route.

Why not? this is an easy decision, root it and play with it, for some reason you don't like it, you can go back to factory stock easily. By the way root will not void warranty, unlock will, but you can alway relock or unroot. So there you have it. It's safe, easy and reverable. Go for it!
If you rooted, you still can take the OTA upgrade no problem, just download and install Voodoo OTA root keeper, save root, take the OTA then restore root (take 1min to do so). Now if you unlock, you won't able to take OTA, however the main reason why you unlocked is you want to run custom rom, so if you are using custom rom then you don't care about OTA. Once the new OTA comes out, you just wait a bit and developers here will create a custom rom for the new release OTA.
get
jellywiz and it's great! It is completely stock. AND ALL of the apps like media hub work. I tired cm 10 and didn't like it. I lost so much like the swipe hand across the screen for screen shot, video while texting, mediahub, nfl mobile here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1853337
Battery was about 90% of stock which I think is great.

If for wifi tether alone rooting is always worth it as far as I am concerned. That is one of the best features out there, then again I guess you may be able to do that for free anyway after that fcc thing

True, but I'm banking on a forthcoming method to obtain root after the OTA hits. Maybe somehow backlevel to a stock ICS build and root from there, etc. Or, maybe I'll never get root back after the OTA hits. Guess we'll see.

Rooting

Hi,
I've had my GSIII for a couple of months now. It's completely stock and unrooted. I was wondering if there was any benefit to rooting it, but not unlocking the bootloader and installing the custom recovery. I know that I won't be able to install custom roms or kernels. But is there anything else that I'd be losing out on?
Thanks

The only reason to unlock the bootloader would be to allow you to flash custom ROMs such as Cyanogenmod10, SlimRom, etc. You can do this by downloading EZ-Unlock from the play store. You will need root to run the program.
You will need root access to do anything a "superuser" needs to do, i.e. run programs such as Titanium backup, triangle away, ROM manager, Ez-Unlock, Root access using file explorer programs, and other programs that require root to function. You can flash Custom Recover without root, using ODIN and an ODIN CWM tar with a boot chain. You can then flash superuser/root using custom recovery.
If you don't need CWM Recovery, then you can just root using the PC USB method.

A couple of months ago, I had an Evo that was fully unlocked, with a custom ROM and kernel. For now, I just want to root it, so that I can run things that require root, like Titanium, and some of the other apps that I bought when on the Evo. I rooted and unlocked the Evo because I was tired of it being sluggish. I actually really like the current setup on my GIII. I'm sure that down the road some ways (when I get bored), I'll fully unlock it, to take advantage of other ROMs.
I am still on 4.04. If I just root, will I be able to update to JB with the OTA?
Similar question...
I am stock 4.0.4, but want to root now that JB is out (don't know why I waited guess I just like the idea of doing it before probably the last major OTA). So I plan to root and unlock. Just wondering do I do it now before loading the JB OTA or afterwards? Are there advantages of one over the other? Thanks!

You should be able to receive the OTA update for JB if you check for updates in settings; if not you will receive it soon. Rooting will not speed up that process at all, and since you'll likely be on JB soon there's really no point in rooting right now. OTA will remove root anyway, but there is a rooting method for JB already available.
If you do eventually decide to root, the main advantage is you can unlock bootloader and flash a custom recovery to install one of the many ROMs available for this phone. If you dislike TouchWiz, you can flash an AOSP rom like CM10 which is more of a stock Android experience. If you don't mind TouchWiz, you can install a ROM like CleanROM which gets rid of Verizon's bloat with a few extra perks.
If you're not into installing custom ROMs, you could still take advantage of rooting by freezing unwanted apps which hinder battery life and run other root-only apps like AdFree which block ads. Also, you can avoid waiting for Verizon to push out updates and install the leaks early.
The big reason I rooted was to uninstall all the bloatware and the ability to back everything up. That right there should be enough for anyone. As far as the ota, you should be able to, just expect to lose root as I've seen in other cases.

No point in doing that now because you will likely receive the OTA update within days, which removes root. You could technically install the leaked OTA manually right now (check the dev section), but since you're running stock you'll just receive it automatically. I wouldn't bother.

I already have the JB update available. I am just waiting a while, to see if it causes any unintended problems. Specifically I'm looking to see if it adversely affects battery life or signal strength.
I'm doing the research and seeing what the differences are between rooting and unlocking the GSIII and the Evo. Right now, I'm fine with the stock ROM. It's way better than anything that I had on my Evo (and I tried them all). Right now, I just want to be able to run apps requiring root.

In my experience, it's usually difficult to avoid OTA updates for long if you're not rooted. I would usually go to sleep and find later that my phone updated itself.
I haven't heard of any battery issues with JB, but I don't see why anyone would want to stick with ICS at this point. Google Now alone is worth it.

Up to you. Rootkeeper does work with this update. I suppose rooting in ICS is easier, but the JB method isn't all that difficult either.

Yep! Then install and use Rootkeeper.
I just rooted myself before I received OTA for the following reasons:
1) I didn't want to use ODIN
2) Didn't want to worry about using Triangle Away
This was my first time rooting, and it was effortless. I used droidstyle's guide. The only thing I did differently was use a modified Debugfs (w/SuperSU), since my phone didn't like the original Debugfs (w/superuser).

One more question, and I am off to give it a try. Is there any way to uproot the phone once it is rooted? You know, just in case I need to bring it in for service if something goes wrong with it.
rooting S III 4.1.1
so I have been thinking about rooting my S3, and did the research and found these two very well explained instructions.

My question is does either one still work for S3 with JB (since they were posted when S3 had ICS).
Thank you!

[Q] Venom Rom Verizon M8 Debloat

I wondering if it's possible to install the Venom Rom without installing the Verizon variant bloatware and Verizon sim checker. I'm currently using the M8 Overseas (GUAM) and GSM runs fine and I'm about to add on LTE Unlimited Data, so the Verizon apps are useless to me.
So If I Super CID will the rom still know my default is Verizon? What would be the best solution? Also since I cannot do OTA updates for Verizon how would I update my firmware? Manual Flash?

If you can install the Venom ROM that means you're rooted with S = OFF so you can remove anything you feel is bloatware with no problems, it doesn't matter what ROM you're on.

If you do update the firmware or accept an OTA I'm sure it will unroot your phone, lock the bootloader and turn S = ON and knowing VZW they may succeed in locking it down so it can't every be unlocked again, they managed this with Samsung phones so the question is, WHY would you EVER want to update your firmware?
Any new features that come with updates will be included in custom ROMs by the developers so you won't be missing anything.

Im 99.9999% sure applying an update wouldnt go through since you are S-Off and even if it did, it wouldnt remove S-Off. Only way to return to S-On is by flashing RUU, which isnt even out yet.
I'm not sure the OP is rooted with S = Off, I may have misread his post.

Thanks for the replies! I am S-Off, I must of misunderstood the Venom Rom 1.2.0 Update it said OTA Carrier Support. I guess that has something to do with the apps. I'm not to sure where to start in removing the Verizon Sim checker thing and Verizon apps... I was just hoping that I can do another Rom Flash that would get rid of the bloatware.

Go into the .zip of the ROM and remove the files you don't want.
Or,
install root explorer, and delete the said files from system/app + system/priv-app

That means that Team Venom provides updates for their ROM OTA, not Verizon updates.

Just uninstall anything you don't want, there are several threads about which apps can be removed. NOTE: AFAIK all the Verizon apps can be removed with no problems.

Thanks again! I'm starting to see things more clearly. I'll try to un-install the Verizon Apps. Found another issue with Venom ROM OTA System update under settings → system update The Check now is Grayed out and states "Software update only work in CDMA Mode" When I switch to CDMA and try to use my WIFI to update it says download unsuccessful. Guess I just have to download the updates and just manually install it.

This may be a dumb question but when they do issue updates how does one go about getting them?

ViperOne uses Aroma installer when you first install the "base" ROM... there are options along the way before the ROM flashes where you can selectively choose not to install certain Apps that are considered bloat (though I don't recall if the apps you don't want are listed). Worst case, you can use a file explorer (as others have posted), or even an App like Titanium Backup would allow you to Freeze/Uninstall anything you don't want. Sometimes, people have created simple scripts that send ADB commands to delete bloat... not sure if anyone has for the M8 though.
As far as "OTA," if you don't have stock recovery, you could try to install the VZW OTA updates, but it won't take as it only will flash using stock recovery (if my memory serves me well). Team Venom is one of the few ROM development teams that have their own OTA updates, but it has nothing to do with Verizon's OTA updates. With the M7 Verizon, I had to flash my OTA files via Recovery as I don't think Team Venom was able to get the Settings>About>Software Update to work. I was told that the OTA works on the M8 with Verizon phones, though I haven't tried it yet.
If Verizon releases an OTA that updates Radios or Firmware, it's best to wait for someone to release a flashable version for those that are S-off/rooted. I don't believe that any of the major carriers have released an OTA update with the phone being so new anyway.

Thanks for the reply! This phone is great, upgraded from my HOX international version with Team Venom Rom. So it's my first time dealing with a carrier based phone. I wish I knew how to remove the Verizon SIM check thing for the Viper One Rom. " The SIM Card is from an Unkown Source".
