I've been waiting on the sidelines, hoping for root before I got my tablet but my family all chipped in and I got mine for my birthday (May 20th).
I've asked a friend if he'd be interested in attempting to root the newest Honeycomb release. I'm waiting for a response from him but while I was showing it to him he made the comment, "are you rooted? It shouldn't be that difficult." He's a programmer with linux experience and since there doesn't seem to be any legit developer working on root, maybe his expertise is what we need.
If he shows interest in the project, we'll need to get him a vtab to work on. I can start a kickstarter for the ~$200 necessary.
This is all contingent on his interest in the project. I'll let you guys know.
Is there still a want/need for this? Will you be willing to donate to the cause?
The vtab doesn't have a sub-forum yet (If ever) and the post in the Q&A section isn't getting many hits, I hope I'm not breaking rules by posting this here.
I spoke with my dev. He's interested but just doesn't have the time. He's full-time employed. However, I have decided to return my vtab because of the major HDMI out issue. If you don't know, the vtab will not output to many tv's, I think because it outputs in 768 and not 720 so many televisions do not know how to handle this. I'm going to be getting the Acer Iconia a500 which has multiple dev's support already and many roms available. I wish everyone who's decided to stick it out, good luck and I hope you get root soon.
Do you think there will be a root exploit for 2.20 soon and if so when do you think it will be available?
I hope there's some devs willing to work on it. It's a relatively new software version. We all gotta have some patience. I'd really like to get CM10 up and running on the HOX. Works great on my Nexus 7.

I know, I actually emailed htc saying something like "we pay for these phone with our money we should be able to do what we want to do with them." and here is what they said: "I understand that you have some concerns regarding the bootloader unlock on the HTC One X and I would be more than happy to assist you with information!
HTC is committed to listening to users and delivering customer satisfaction. Since announcing our commitment to unlockable bootloaders, HTC has worked to enable our customers to unlock the bootloader on more than 45 devices over the past six months. In some cases, however, restrictions prevent certain devices from participating in our bootloader unlocking program. Rest assured, HTC is committed to assisting developers in unlocking bootloaders for HTC devices and we'll continue to unlock additional devices in the future."
I personally would love to be able to unlock the AT&T HOX through the htcdev website that would be awesome!

Unfortunately, the carriers have the upper hand when it comes to bootloaders and whether they allow them to be unlocked. It could be a while, if ever, until HTC adds the AT&T HOX to their supported unlockable devices. I'll take an unofficial method instead if that's what's available. But yeah, it would be great if it happened officially.
asking when root will be available is like asking a dev when his rom is going to be updated. rest assured it will happen eventually, but the devs that do this do it in there spare time when not at work or with family, and most of the time end up doing all for free and risking there own devices. so the answer is it will come but only when it ready.

I know the phone is barely released, but what is the likelihood of seeing a root tool and a base AOSP Android L rom when it releases? In general do Huawei phones even see developer support on XDA or any other forums?
I really want the Mate 7, but only if i'll be able to get vanilla Android L running on it in the near future. I searched the Huawei forums and it doesn't look very promising. I was wondering since this is a pretty big departure from what Huawei usually releases, if it changes anything.
I am very tempted to get this device too, but only if it can be tinkered with.
I would love to get this running stock android L

Usually when there is very little developer interest in a device we have end up getting a bounty going. I started a bounty for root for the Galaxy Mega last year and it ended up working.

Root and recovery is out.

To prep phone : http://cn.club.vmall.com/thread-1241100-1-1.html do this. Google translate the page.
viola root. Caveat is only from a PC... no mac support. Cannot personally verify, but reading comments translated in multiple threads seems successful. Will have to manually save and update phone to upgrade as updates come out via this method. Wish it were a simple as other chinese roms, like miui or flyme.

Yes, technically that means you can install various ROMs or recoveries on your device, but you'll have to wait until someone actually makes some for the device. Judging by the other Huawei devices on XDA, there doesn't seem like there will be very much development for this device either. That's why I suggested a bounty. I've had Android phones where there was not much development (T-Mobile Galaxy Note, Moto Cliq). It sucked watching other devices get all the attention. Now the AM7 may be just popular enough to get some attention from devs, but ultimately, I am preparing myself for the possibility that development for the AM7 will be very slow, just so I won't be dissapointed.
But I may be wrong.
How do bounty's work? Paypal? How do you know if the Dev is even qualified or going to complete the work once the bounty is paid? I'd be willing to throw in a few bucks.

The person who creates the bounty sets the goal (root, recovery, ROM, AOSP, etc.) that will satisfy the bounty. People pledge an amount of their choosing. Once the goal is completed and verified (by making it available to test), then the money is collected via Paypal and given to the first person to reach the goal.
Here's a good example of what a bounty thread looks like: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2728051
(Don't expect our bounty to get that expensive lol.)
Hopefully if root works and we can get the device tree sorted then its all good. Be interesting to see if kernel sources will be released
Most other people have very unrootable phones (I know us G900A-s do), and this Quadrooter exploit is present on multiple devices. What if we started a bounty to encourage development of this exploit, and whoever makes a working root first gets the payout? I'd be willing to contribute at least $20.
well, since it spans on so many devices and the driver seems to be the same, it would only require minor tweaks for each device. So any working code for one device can be applied to almost all of them. So in effect, all you have to do here is to compile a list of already existing bounties for all the pending devices and that will be the pool the dev for the exploit will get
this is a very good idea and needs to happen asap. my phone is terribly bloated and i cannot get root. ZTE Z988. Ive tried everything i can think of to get it rooted and this quadroot exploit looks like the best way in
Hello,
I got the ultra for about a month now, and frankly I am starting to get desperate since i couldn't yet unlock its potentials with the rooting. I have been trying different instructions on different websites, which turned out to be fake. rooting apps such as KingRoot fails, so I couldn't find a way!.
Just to be clear, I am very good at rooting any android device as long as I have clear instructions ,,, I mean with step by step guide I am the king of rooting :good:
Thanks for the supportm
While you are waiting for root, be sure to disable all automatic updates so that if root is found, the phone won't get patched accidentally to prevent you exploiting it.

True,
I seriously thought rooting an Android would be the same for all or most devices, i guess it's not!
Asus is going to release the bootloader utility for the ultra in a couple of months I persisted with their support services online and the last email I received informed me they are working on it.
I too contacted them, saying I was strongly considering the phone, but won't buy it without being able to unlock the bootloader. I am waiting for the reply.
If a bunch of people also contact them, perhaps they will realise that it really matters to some people and will promoted sales. OTOH, their customer service people might not understand and simply fob us off without passing the message on.

where do I contact them?
https://www.asus.com/support/
I received a reply from them. Sadly it was a pre-formatted reply which simply included a link to their online return/repair/RMA service. Pretty pointless since I had specifically said I was *thinking* of buying but would only do so because as an android developer I need an unlocked bootloader. facepalm.
I sent a reply asking them to read my request more carefully. I don't expect much help from them.
I have tried to contact other Asus departments in the past and either never got a reply or only got a useless one.
Me getting desperate as well. The main reason I switched from iPhone to Android was trying its full potential and app development. It sucks they haven't released it yet. So let it be a lesson for the next Android phone I want to buy to do a through research in this forum.
I really want one of these phones but I must have root. I contacted the service centre asking when they will release a unlocked bootloader. Here is their responce -
"Thank you for contacting ASUS Service Care.
My name is Gilliant and it's my pleasure to help you with your problem.
We're so thankful to hear about your consideration of our product.
In regards to your concern, please be noted our new Zenfone series (ex: Zenfone 3, Zenfone 3 ultra, Zenfone 3 deluxe, etc) is not yet available with unlock bootloader tool. However, we also could not inform you the estimated release time of this tool since we don't have any available information yet. "
Sounds like it my never be release from that, so I'm not prepared to take the risk and get one early.
I got similar reply, and added they do not support rooting, like I don't know!
isn't there a way without Asus support? like a community or something!!
someone will almost certainly find a way to unlock the bootloader without Asus's help one day, but it may be a long time, and may be with some considerable risk to your phone.
so at the moment if you absolutely must have permanent root and unlockable bootloader, don't buy.
someone found that the Dirty Cow exploit worked on the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro, which has the same CPU, so there's a chance it might provide temp root on the AZf3U:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69867475&postcount=2
maybe someone can get the binary and try it on the AZf3U?
I asked the guy, he responded with a link and I was able to build the binary using the NDK which I installed alongside Android Studio, and I did get root on my phone with it. I'm happy to share the binary if anyone wants to poke the AZf3U and see if it works.
This link says yes, the device CAN be unlocked/rooted and upgradable to android 7 as well. We're looking at the device, and hope to root, too. Anyone feeling lucky?

the date on the article means it's quite possibly bogus, given the AZf3U's general availability date.
Well, there are people who wrote 'thanks' for the info, so that would hint of its authenticity. In any event, our 3/ultra device is now on its way, being shipped to us even as i write this. If no one else is brave enough - I'll let you know how it goes once we get it up & running.
Is there someone with an AZf3U willing to trust me and try the dirtycow exploit?
I've uploaded the dirtycow exploit which I built using the Android Studio NDK to
http://www.zaurus.org.uk/download/CV...5195.built.tgz
there's two builds, one for for 32 and the other for 64 bit android
unpack and run on a linux box connected to the phone over ADB
the instructions on how to use it are here:

let me know if you need more help

I'm willing to give this a go but I don't do Linux (way too much hassle and there's always something that doesn't work right out of the box). Is there a way to run this on a Windows machine? Or at the very least through a Hyper-V VM? (The issue with a VM would be access to the USB port...)
It should be possible to map your phone as a USB device through to a linux VM and try the process that way; any decent hypervisor should allow that, with virtualbox or Hyper-V. Create a linux VM using a distro of your choice, ubuntu 16.04 is popular, and then install Android Studio. Do a git clone and build the project. Warning, AndroidStudio is pretty huge, it will take a long while to download, I suggested minimising the number of Android versions you want to support to a minimum. You'll need the toolkit which includes fastboot and adb.
I also think it should be possible to adapt the process to run on a windows machine with a windows binary of ADB. Or, if you are willing, install Android Studio on your windows machine and add the NDK and then build this yourself, if that process would be more familiar.
Has anyone tried the bootloader unlock tool for the regular Zenfone 3 on the ultra??
