ICS 4.04 on OpenSense 9.23 w/Tamcore kernel
Seems no matter what ROM I try, the editing space on the ICS default SMS app is very small.
Especially hard for big fingers to navigate.
Is there anyway to change this or perhaps there is a better app available?
Try another sms app like whatsapp or gosms

Ok so as we know the galaxy 4g has the cool puzzle piece unlock. But the default SMS app isn't very good compared to handcent. So is there anyway you could use the puzzle piece unlock with handcent

with handcent doesnt the message automatically pop up without you having to unlock your phone?
and shouldnt this thread be in general?
I have the pop up disabled. I was in a rush so I thts why I posted it in the wrong section

This is just my opinion but if you can get the .apk file and if the rom your on is deodexed than you can try to use root explorer or anything like it to overwrite the original mms.apk with handcent.
You got to rename handcent to Mms.apk or whatever your mms.apk is named.
I've done it when I was on white's deodexed kd1 but thats just me.
Don't try it if your unsure and I take no responsiblity if you mess up.
Hope this info gives you more of a idea on how it can be done.

My gf got rid of handcent because it kept messing up her messaging. Either missing text, not sending, or send very garbled up messages; was really weird.

I switched from Handcent to GOSMSPro, and haven't looked to any other apps since. They're very similar at first glance but I like GOSMS better. I don't use the puzzle unlock, but maybe you can give it a go, it might work with it.

Hrm, I've been looking at that app. What is exactly better about it compared to handcent?

I just tried go SMS pro and its ok but I think handcent is a lot better. I don't think go SMS had the puzzle piece unlock option

I like that it allows theming plus you can turn off features you don't use so it'll use up less memory. You can also customize the icons that come up in notifications, you can have contact blacklists, private threads (you can password protect texts from certain people), per contact notifications, backlight notifications... That's what I can think of off the top of my head. I think they're very similar apps.
Too bad that neither works with the puzzle unlock.
Ya go SMS definitely has really cool features but I like the look of handcent more. And memory isn't a problem for me since I can force apps to the sd card using titanium backup

Has anyone else noticed that there is now a character limit in the stock SMS app? It used to split my messages after 160 characters, but now it just stops me from typing all together.
The settings menu doesn't have any options to change this anymore either. I'm kind of mad... seems like such basic functionality.
It never split my messages....there was no change between 2.3.4 and 2.3.5

That's annoying. It should send longer messages as an MMS which can be much larger.

Hmm. I'm using the stock deodexed 2.3.4 ROM and it splits my messages. Is there a custom messaging app that someone might have stuck in the 2.3.4 ROM?
Stock 2.3.5 AOSP does not limit on a gsm device, it properly splits.

very frustrating.
either way, I flashed my backup of 2.3.4 and pulled the MMS.apk off of it and stuck it in on 2.3.5 so I can split my flipping texts. this seems like such a simple feature to leave out.
PM me if you want a copy of it
I don't really want to start a war of the texting world. But what are your preferences for texting apps and why?
Hand cent, GO, etc.
Thanks all. Just want friendly discussion.

hate em all. only one I like is the stock android one. i do use handcent, but only for the emoji. if the stock sms app got an addon for that I would switch back in a heartbeat.

AOKP has a stock ICS SMS app that has Emoji. I love it.

Although it has a large footprint like Handcent, GoSMS is terrific for a lot of reasons. First, it has two plugin downloads for emoticons/Emojis. It comes with standard happy/sad/confused faces, but one plugin adds elaborate faces, symbols and icons (probably close to 300) and are much more detailed. The second plugin adds something like large vector art.
And some may be asking "how can my recipient get these things in their messages if they are not supported--or if one of these items turns the message into an MMS?
Well that's the most nifty thing about it. It had a service that is linked to the app which routes it around their servers and straight to your recipient as a data-based MMS. In other words, even if you cannot typically send MMS because your APN is wrong or whatever, this app makes sure your texts get through...essentially it's an SMS-over-IP service. Plus, your recipient does not need to have it installed.
Lastly GoSMS can be infinitely skinned. I am not sure what Handcent can do, but I use images for the background of my conversations list and my actual conversion (which can be customized for each recipient). It also scans all other apps for any fonts it can use, and offers them to be used as part of the UI..

I prefer GoSMS. I don't like the stock sms client and originally used Handcent until it started force closing all the time. If this had not start happening, I would probably still use handcent. GoSMS is highly customizable which I like.
I'm using the inverted AOSP Stuff out of this forum from he_stheone64. Because it's look very smart and clean for me and it's much easier to handle than this htc sense stuff..
thats my opinion why I had chosen them.

Hello,
I really like the stock ICS Contacts application and although I love CM9, I feel that without the hardware decoding then GB roms will be better. So I'm wondering if anyone could port the stock ICS contacts app for Gingerbread etc?
Thanks.

Even if someone could just create an SMS app similar with the same appearance like the Gallery ICS and Camera ICS available in the Play Store.

There are already clone sms app. Its called ICS messages, but don't know about the quality. I stopped using it after first sms because it can't process special characters and accented letters into gsm mode.

Nope. Only ICS SMS only.
Hi every one
I'm currently looking for a SMS app that let me see my list of conversation on the left and the conversation I selected on the right (something like the landscape mode SMS app for Galaxy SII). All I can find when looking for a tablet SMS app are apps that read SMS from a phone and display them on the tablet, but that's not what I'm looking for, as I want this app on my Paranoid Android Galaxy S. I hope what I mean is understandable enough, thanks in advance for anyone who answers.
So you want the SMS app to look like the tablet version of gmail?
Sent from my Nexus S using Codename Android Jelly Bean
Yes, I'm looking for something like that.
The sidekick 4g also has a stock mms app in that style. Somebody would need to recompile it for aosp though. Better off with the other one though cuz the sidekick used custom everything...

split view
samsung comes with a nice split view on galaxy tabs, unfortunately lost the view with switch to cm.
in the market is tablet sms by player thong, which only helps you with sms sent from this app.
on the left is the contact list. checked it, deleted it.
No other good sms app for phablets?
