SMS/MMS Preference? - HTC One S

I don't really want to start a war of the texting world. But what are your preferences for texting apps and why?
Hand cent, GO, etc.
Thanks all. Just want friendly discussion.

hate em all. only one I like is the stock android one. i do use handcent, but only for the emoji. if the stock sms app got an addon for that I would switch back in a heartbeat.

AOKP has a stock ICS SMS app that has Emoji. I love it.

Although it has a large footprint like Handcent, GoSMS is terrific for a lot of reasons. First, it has two plugin downloads for emoticons/Emojis. It comes with standard happy/sad/confused faces, but one plugin adds elaborate faces, symbols and icons (probably close to 300) and are much more detailed. The second plugin adds something like large vector art.
And some may be asking "how can my recipient get these things in their messages if they are not supported--or if one of these items turns the message into an MMS?
Well that's the most nifty thing about it. It had a service that is linked to the app which routes it around their servers and straight to your recipient as a data-based MMS. In other words, even if you cannot typically send MMS because your APN is wrong or whatever, this app makes sure your texts get through...essentially it's an SMS-over-IP service. Plus, your recipient does not need to have it installed.
Lastly GoSMS can be infinitely skinned. I am not sure what Handcent can do, but I use images for the background of my conversations list and my actual conversion (which can be customized for each recipient). It also scans all other apps for any fonts it can use, and offers them to be used as part of the UI..

I prefer GoSMS. I don't like the stock sms client and originally used Handcent until it started force closing all the time. If this had not start happening, I would probably still use handcent. GoSMS is highly customizable which I like.

I'm using the inverted AOSP Stuff out of this forum from he_stheone64. Because it's look very smart and clean for me and it's much easier to handle than this htc sense stuff..
thats my opinion why I had chosen them.

SMS Popup / Handcent / Chomp / AndroSMS / Others

Hi,
I'm an avid user of SMS Popup, mainly because while the threaded SMS in Handcent is a good thing, I think it's ugly as hell... and being iPhone-esque doesn't mean it's pretty (as some might believe)
Has anyone had experience with other SMS'ing apps that really deliver the goods...?
I think the standard X10 threaded SMS in the actuall contact's details is great - it looks clean and professional, but switches to the boring Android standard when you want to reply, which is a real shame...
SMS Popup works for me because it adds that extra something without redoing something that the Xperia already does, but just doing it uglier like Handcent (sorry to diss the app so much, but I just can't understand what people see in it)
AndroSMS would have been my next favourite, as it does a nice and clean threaded SMS, but it's a little buggy... shows messages as being unsent in the main android messaging app, and does that ugly thing a lot of apps seem to do on the x10, where the borders on popups/buttons are all funky...
I prefer chompsms!!

I thought Handcent SMS is the most popular SMS apps?
What is the difference between Handcent and Chomp sms app?
Handcent looks better than the default one, but I am not a big fan of it either. I checked the screenshots of Chomp and they looked similar to Handcent.
Handcent is by far the best and the most complete SMS app for any phone or platform. Ive had Symbians, iPhones, WindowsMobile and Handcent is better than the others combined. Developer is obviously a genius and it is free !

Previewing Texts

Early apologies if this is in the wrong section but i couldnt find anything when i tried searching this topic.
Anyway, my old htc phones (windows mobile), the screen would turn on and i would get a preview of a text i just received.
on the inspire, the screen remains off even though the notification noises and vibrations play.
is there any way to make the screen turn on as well ?
it drives me nutts that i cant just glance at my phone!! i have to turn it on then do the unlocking, etc.
any help is much appreciated!
I don't know about the stock HTC SMS app but there's an option for this in GoSMS. I highly recommended it.
Or you can try sms popup.

+1 - Great app!
Handcent has screen wake option. And it by far is better than stock messaging app anyway, a billion options to use.

Can't get into handset, it just looks too ugly - even with the skins.
They need to update handcrnt for higher resolution/larger displays.

What he said!
Handcent, second to none for SMS!
thanks a lot guys!
i will definitely try out the apps you've mentioned.
umm?
im loving go sms pro. very clean interface.
however, i accidentally deleted some text messages.
and i dont see a deleted items folder.
is there any way to recover deleted texts??
another vote for handcent here..
Go SMS Pro seems pretty promising thus far. I hated Handcent because of the overall 'old' feel and sluggish performance. Go SMS was a little laggy but I bumped the performance down to the "middle" level and it seems to work quite well now.

If you didn't use the backup that Go SMS offers I don't think you can get them back. Maybe they're hidden somewhere but I wouldn't know how to go about finding them.
If you don't want to change messaging apps, you might want to look at SMSawake or SMS Screen WakeUp.
I'm using Chomp SMS. Let's you preview text and lot's of other options.

IPhone emoji

Is there a way with a rooted s off phone running cm7.0.3.1 to get support for iPhone emoji? I don't care about typing them, I just want to view them

iphone sucks.
IPhone does suck, I agree. But its annoying to see a bunch of boxes
Sent from my EVO shift 4G running CM 7.0.3.1 via the XDA app
you can install handcent for your messaging app and then install the handcent emoji plugin and can view/send them
Ahhh. Ok, I already have handcent. Ill get that. Thanks a bunch. Any way to extend that to other programs?

No Prob, I don't know of any way to extend it. Would be cool though
Go for GoSMS. It's the best sms app for Android. It has plugin for Emoji plus sms folders.
+1 for GoSMS
as for extending it you can try using the UOT Kitchen to make a theme, you pick which elements of the theme you want or don't want, and I know emoji is an option. not sure what they have though cause I like the stock Android ones. hope this helps.
If you're rooted, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=690781 for a way to get black-and-white emoji fonts.

[Q] What messaging app do you guys use?

Just curious, I'm a heavy texter and the stock messaging doesn't really work for me. I downloaded Handcent, and it seems to do the job fine. But what messaging apps do you guys use?
And is there a way to download the stock vanilla Android messaging apk found on Nexus Ones, G2's etc?
I'm using stock right now, works OK for me although I haven't really explorer too many other apps. When I first got my infuse I used chomps sms which is just like bites for iphone. Quick reply and compose are the 2 things I really like.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA Premium App
Only other alternative to stock I've tried is go SMS pro. Its pretty good but as a preference I run stock with the android keyboard.

Been using handcent since i started using android... U can customize jus abt everything, including each specific txt thread, to ur liking. The main feature i use it for, however, is the ability to lock the txt messages (both handcent & stock) it so has the quick reply which is cool...
message from Sams inFuse... GINGERBREAD *****ES!!!!
I'm also using chomp SMS. I came from iPhone and had bitesms installed. Chomp is made by the same company as bite, so a lot of the features are similar. Quick reply and compose are my favorites. The lock screen notification isn't as good as bite for iphone, but its tolerable.

Handcent is pretty good but I went back to using the default messaging app. Just a lot less laggy imo.

Same here. Havent tried any others. Got used to "bite" on the iphone and so gave chomp a try. Always big on the custom text tones for specific contacts. Sure its not the only one with it. But i was used to it so went with it.
I tried of them out last night and ended up deleting all of them. The resolution of the apps were all terrible and did not look good on this super amoled plus screen. Sorry but that bugged me lol.

I use GO SMS Pro
I have try Stock, Chomp, Go SMS Pro, and Handcent. Go SMS Pro by far the best looking and best working SMS application IMO. For those using Handcent check out Go SMS Pro almost the same editing wise but slicker looking.
I use Go SMS Pro and love it. Didn't care for Chomp SMS as much as I did BiteSMS on iPhone.
I'm also using Go SMS Pro. The only downside is if you receive multiple images in a single message, they just show on a single page and you can't save them for Gallery viewing (at least as far as I can tell, lol). In that specific scenario, I switch over to the default Messaging app.
Haven't tried any other apps. The one feature I really like about Go SMS is the Private message box, not sure if that is available in other apps. You can also schedule messages, kind of neat for "texting in sick" early in the AM before the boss-man is awake (and can reply)
Go SMS does not appear to be able to show texts on the lock screen, but I always disabled that feature in iOS so not a concern for me.

SMS app replacement

Anyone here can recommend a non-laggy sms replacement app for the note's default one? GoSMS Pro is good, but it's laggy, and i rather some more feedback from the forum here regarding other apps before i go and try them, namely handcent, chompsms, etc..
your input is appreciated. thanks!

I've used Handcent before, but my current favorite is Go SMS Pro.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.jb.gosms
If only we could use the stock CM7 SMS App (and dialer, for that matter)! Tried installing it, it starts but FCs when clicking Compose.
Pete
Basically I used ChompSMS and Go SMS Pro. ChompSMS is for the quick reply window which I prefer to hide the text until I press Show and Go SMS is for Private Contacts which I did not want it to show at all in any of the SMS applications.
Handcent is really good with different theme to choose from and have a widget also
Don't forget about jaxtrsms. It let's you send free sms's...
GO Sms is a good choice! Love using it
The OP already said he tried GO but was laggy... and it is very laggy. I'd like to know of something similar too but will actually run well?

I didn't notice that! Actually, another 'choice' that is super fast would be the Go Widget that comes with Go Launcher. It isn't a full-fledged SMS app, but rather a Messages widget that you can add to a homescreen. Since I started using it, I rarely use the actual messaging app on the system. You can view and reply to messages directly from the widget through a popup window. I think the only time it uses your messaging app is when sending a "new message". It is easily the fastest messaging solution out there.
I use metro messanging beta and it is smoth like hell ;-) although it looks like messanging app on windows phone 7. If u like the look try it. I love it

GoSMS is good but the the current update (v4) is a huge letdown... Lots of Bugs (themeing and color customization), no lite mode, a lil laggy... im still using the v3.72...
Thanks all. I Am trying Handcent now, and nt as friendly when coming to individual sms tones, and especially when there's no options for group sms tones
Might have to try the others listed here.. Completely uninstalled gosms even the new version is still laggy compared to Handcent
